The Connection Between Eggs and Alzheimer's

Alzheimer's is a problem that is only becoming more worrisome as the years go by, not only for each of us individually, but for the entire world. While current technology allows us to live longer lives, it doesn't necessarily guarantee they will be good, and researchers are also trying to decipher the role of our diet in attempting to find a way to slow down the progression of brain degeneration. In a new study published in the American Journal of Nutrition , researchers set out to examine whether a fairly basic food item—eggs—can play a role in the fight against Alzheimer's and dementia, and given the many health benefits attributed to it, they were not surprised to discover that it is one of the best foods for those who wish to maintain cognition at an older age.

Research findings: Eggs can help prevent Alzheimer's

The study examined the relationship between egg consumption and the risk of developing dementia at an older age. During it, data from 1,024 participants who took part in the Rush Memory and Aging Project, in which the average age of the participants was 81.38 years, were analyzed. Over a period of 6.7 years, the researchers found that eating more than one egg per week was associated with a 47% reduced chance of developing Alzheimer's, compared to those who ate fewer eggs.

Another interesting finding from the Rush Memory and Aging Project was that the level of brain protection was quite similar between those who consumed one egg and those who consumed two eggs per week. Additionally, they found that choline—a substance abundant in the yolk—was responsible for 39% of the level of protection against Alzheimer's. Eggs also contain omega-3 fatty acids and lutein, two substances that have already been linked in past research to supporting brain health.

The researchers concluded their study as follows: "These findings suggest that frequent egg consumption is associated with a reduced risk of Alzheimer's-type dementia and Alzheimer's pathology, and this association is partially mediated by the choline in the yolk.".
Additional benefits of eggs
Beyond their role in protecting the brain from Alzheimer's, eggs have a host of other significant health benefits, including:

Rich in nutrients: Eggs are rich in high-quality protein and a variety of vitamins and minerals like selenium, riboflavin, phosphorus, pantothenic acid, vitamin A, and folic acid.

Maintaining eye health: Eggs contain lutein and zeaxanthin, two substances that according to studies may prevent diseases and issues that impair vision.

Weight management: The protein in eggs can greatly assist in creating a feeling of fullness, and only at 18 calories. The yolk contains 55-60 calories.

How should you consume eggs?
To get the most out of eggs and their ability to protect the brain from Alzheimer's disease, consider adopting the following tips:

Try to consume at least 1-2 eggs per week

Learn how to incorporate eggs into various meals: scrambled, hard-boiled, omelet, or fried in the morning or evening, and hard-boiled egg as part of a salad alongside lunch.

Discover new egg recipes you haven't tried yet—there are some very simple ones, such as poached egg, baked egg and shakshuka

If you are concerned about cholesterol, consult your doctor regarding the right amount of eggs for you, and remember that while this study has promising results, it is very important to maintain a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle to properly protect the brain from Alzheimer's. Eggs are just one more step that can help.

The Health Benefits of Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are available all over the world, and if you only eat these delicious root vegetables when they've been baked until they are virtually unrecognizable, then you are missing out on one of nature's greatest nutritional gifts. They are not only rich in a vast range of nutrients, but they are also one of the best natural ways to regulate your blood sugar levels, making them an exceptionally beneficial food for diabetics. It also helps that they are absolutely scrumptious, and their sweet flavor is completely unlike any other found in the vegetable world. Indeed, sweet potatoes are so versatile that they're sure to liven up a whole range of dishes, even desserts!
sweet potato health benefits
Selecting and Storing Sweet Potatoes There are different varieties of sweet potato, and many come in different colorings and hues. Here are some tips for selecting, storing and preparing the vegetable, so that you can benefit from as much goodness as possible.

1. Choose the darker variety of sweet potato at the grocery store if possible, because they have the higher carotene content, essential for the production of vitamin A. Purple sweet potatoes, more commonly found in Asia, are also a great source of nutrients. Paler varieties are healthy, but don't offer quite the same number of benefits as darker types, and many people often confuse them with yams.
2. Avoid wrinkly, soft sweet potatoes and take time to select ones with good, firm flesh. If there are signs of green discoloring, then leave them alone.
3. Store sweet potatoes in a cool, dark and well ventilated place. Do not leave them in plastic bags, or keep them in the fridge. Consume within 7-10 days of purchase.
4. Prepare sweet potatoes in the same way you would prepare normal white potatoes. However, bear in mind that the skin contains a large percentage of the nutrients, so try to leave it on if possible. You can make fantastic sweet potato fries by leaving the skin on, and chopping the vegetable into strips.
5. You can steam, bake, boil or roast sweet potatoes, and still benefit from plenty of nutrients. But as with any vegetable preparation, try not to over-cook them.

Specific Health Benefits of Sweet Potatoes
Although they are soft, creamy and sweet enough to be used in some desserts, sweet potatoes offer a surprisingly huge range of nutritional benefits, many of which have specific health benefits.

1. Great for Heart Health
The high levels of vitamin B6 and potassium found in sweet potatoes provide excellent benefits for your heart. B6 vitamins break down homocysteine, a substance which can harden blood vessels and block arteries. Potassium, meanwhile, helps balance fluid and blood pressure levels, while providing your body's cells with electrolytes that help regulate your heart beat.

2. Great Source of Vitamin A
Sweet potatoes contain a huge amount of beta-carotene, a carotenoid that gives certain vegetables their orange color. The body can turn carotenoids into vitamin A, which is linked to cancer prevention, the maintenance of good vision, and also provides a number of anti-ageing benefits. Indeed, one large sweet potato is capable of providing 100% of your recommended daily intake of vitamin A according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

3.Great for Blood Sugar Levels
Although they are sweet tasting, sweet potatoes are low on the glycemic index, which means they are a very good blood sugar regulator. Many starchy foods, including white potatoes, encourage blood sugar levels to spike and rise rapidly, but sweet potatoes release sugar into the bloodstream much more slowly. This makes them a great choice for diabetics, who can safely consume the carbohydrates without associated problems.

4. Great for Skin Care
Sweet potatoes can work to improve the appearance of your skin from both inside and outside your body. The high levels of vitamin C and E contained within sweet potatoes helps boost the body's defenses against the sun's harmful UV rays and encourages the production of collagen, which keeps the skin strong and supple.

But it isn't only the consumption of sweet potatoes that can benefit your skin. If you boil them, don't throw away the water afterwards. Take a cup and use your fingers to gently apply the water to your face. This can help clean your pores, remove impurities from the skin and even reduce dark circles around your eyes.

5. Great for Digestion
Sweet potatoes are a great source of dietary fiber, while still being low in calorie content. Fiber promotes a healthy digestive tract, helping your body pass toxins and waste products out quickly and efficiently, while guarding against constipation and bloatedness.

6. Great for Emphysema Prevention
Emphysema is a condition that gradually damages the air sacs in the lungs, leaving sufferers short of breath. It is often associated with smokers, or people exposed to smoking on a regular basis. Smoking reduces levels of vitamin A, which helps regenerate the cells in the lungs. The beta-carotene contained within sweet potatoes encourages the production of vitamin A and helps heal the respiratory system.

7. Great Source of Vitamins and Minerals
Sweet potatoes contain a significant amount of vitamins C, E, B5, B6, riboflavin and copper. These nutrients offer a range of benefits for your immune system, red blood cell production, sleep patterns, mood, wound repair, disease prevention, muscle weakness and pain.

8. Great for Stress Relief
Sweet potatoes contain high amounts of magnesium, often considered to be one of the best minerals for promoting relaxation, calmness and improved mood. As we already know, they are also rich in potassium, which helps regulate your heart beat when you are anxious or stressed.

When you’re savoring the taste of delicious and succulent mangoes, you probably don’t stop to think about the immense health benefits that are coming your way. But you should, as mangoes, due to their abundance of antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins, are one of the healthiest fruits out there. Below are 8 fantastic health benefits of this exotic fruit.

1. Maintains Overall Health
The impressive vitamin content of mango helps to assure overall health. These fruits are rich in potassium and magnesium and, as a result, they are a great remedy for high blood pressure. They also contain calcium, iron, phosphorus, and selenium. They are vitamin and mineral powerhouses as they are rich in vitamin A, B6, C, E, K, folate, thiamin, riboflavin, and pantothenic acid. These components help you to avoid a whole host of diseases that can arise due to deficiencies in these vitamins and minerals.

2. Prevents Cancer
Mangoes have high amounts of pectin, a soluble dietary fiber that lowers cholesterol levels in the blood. Pectin can also help to prevent the development of prostate cancer. Recently, studies at The Institute for Food Research discovered that a compound within pectin combines with galectin 3 (a protein that plays a significant role in all stages of cancer). The European Prospective Investigation of Cancer has also found a strong link between eating a mango and lowering the risk of gastrointestinal cancer.

3. Aids in Digestion
Mangoes play a prominent role in eliminating problems such as excess acidity and indigestion. The digestive enzymes present in them help to promote natural, efficient digestion. The bioactive ingredients in mangoes such as esters, aldehydes, and terpenes enhance appetite and improve the function of the digestive system.

4. Delays Aging
The high concentration of vitamin A and C helps to produce collagen proteins inside the body. Collagen helps to protect blood vessels and the body’s connective tissues, thereby slowing down the natural aging process. Therefore, mangoes are true anti-aging foods.

5. Cures Anemia
Mangoes are rich in iron, which makes them extremely beneficial for people suffering from anemia. Therefore, a regular intake of this fruit can help eliminate anemia by increasing the red blood cell count in the body.

6. Promotes Brain Health
Mangoes are rich in vitamin B6, which is vital for maintaining and improving the brain’s functioning. These vitamins help in the amalgamation of the major neurotransmitters that contribute to determining mood and the modification of sleeping patterns. With mangoes as part of your diet, you can be assured of a healthy brain and effective nerve functioning. To add to this, the glutamine present in mangoes helps to improve concentration and memory.

7. Manages Diabetes
Studies have revealed that mangoes are a great natural remedy for diabetes. It was once believed that diabetics should avoid mangoes because of their sweet taste, but now it has been shown that the fruit and leaves can help manage diabetes. Place 10-15 mango leaves in warm water and cover them with a lid before going to bed. In the morning, drink the water on an empty stomach after filtering out the leaves. Doing this regularly has been shown to help manage blood sugar levels in diabetics.

8. Useful During Pregnancy
Mangoes are beneficial for pregnant women as they fulfill the iron requirements during pregnancy. Doctors often prescribe iron tablets to pregnant women, but instead of taking these supplements, a pregnant woman can enjoy a healthy iron-rich mango.

Health Benefits of Swiss Chard

Swiss chard's many health benefits can be attributed to its vitamins, nutrients and organic compounds, which include vitamin K, vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin E, riboflavin and vitamin B6. Swiss chard is also packed with minerals- magnesium, manganese, potassium, iron, sodium and copper. It is also a good source of dietary fiber. Swiss chard has a significant amount of polyphenolic antioxidants, phytonutrients and enzymes that are unique and highly beneficial to your health.

1. It helps manage diabetes
Swiss chard has been found to regulate blood sugar levels in the body. One of the unique flavanoids found in Swiss chard is syringic acid, which inhibits the activity of a specific enzyme named alpha-glucosidase. This means that less carbs are broken down to simple sugars, which allows the blood sugar levels in the body to remain stable and prevent the plunges and peaks, known to be dangerous for diabetic patients, or those who are at a high risk of developing diabetes.

2. It improves bone health
Swiss chard contains a significant amount of calcium in its leaves, giving it a major boost for bone health. Alongside other minerals found in this vegetable, calcium helps stimulate bone growth and development, including magnesium and vitamin K.

3. It boosts your brain power
Swiss chard is a great source of both potassium and vitamin K, both of which are found in significant amounts in the brain and are integral parts of boosting cognitive development and abilities.

4. It boosts blood circulation
Both iron and copper are essential elements of red blood cells. Without these two minerals, people can develop anemia, which includes symptoms like weakness, fatigue, stomach disorders and lack of concentration. Ensuring a proper amount of red blood cells by eating such foods can increase your blood flow and oxygenation of essential organs within the body.
5. It improves blood pressure and heart health
Swiss chard contains anti-inflammatory and phytonutrient antioxidants, which, along with potassium, all contribute to reducing blood pressure and stress on the cardiovascular system. Some hypertension is due to pro-inflammatory enzymes within the body, which the organic compounds in Swiss chard are able to neutralize. Furthermore, Swiss chard protects those who eat it from a variety of conditions like atherosclerosis, heart attacks and strokes.
6. It promotes eye care
Swiss chard contains a substantial amount of beta-carotene, which has been linked to optimal eye health and a reduction in macular degeneration, glaucoma, night blindness and other vision-related conditions.

7. It promotes healthy hair
The organic compound biotin has directly been linked to healthy hair, the stimulation of follicles as well as luster and texture. Swiss chard also has significant amounts of biotin, among its many other beneficial compounds.

8. It can prevent cancer
As with many leafy, green vegetables, Swiss chard also contains anti-cancer properties due to the large amounts of antioxidants found in it. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, which are a dangerous byproduct of cellular metabolism, causing healthy cells to become cancerous. It also contains significant amounts of vitamin E, C, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin, kaempferol, beta-carotene and quercetin - many of which have been connected to preventing a wide array of cancers, specifically, colon cancer.
