5 Serious Mistakes That Can Lead to Dehydration in Seniors

Did you know that a third to half of all seniors are dehydrated? Scientific evidence points out that this is a serious and widespread problem, especially since dehydration in older adults can have dire consequences. In this article, we delve deeper into this issue and discuss 5 common misconceptions that cause dehydration in seniors.

How Common Is Dehydration Among Seniors?

According to the latest scientific estimates, up to 50% of all seniors are chronically dehydrated. With age, one’s ability to retain and hydrate all the cells in the body decreases, which means that older adults will be more susceptible to dehydration than younger adults.

Certain medications, such as diuretics and laxatives, as well as certain conditions, e.g. reduced kidney function, likewise make you lose water faster. All these factors increase the risk of dehydration in seniors and require them to pay closer attention to how much liquid they consume each day, especially since the health stakes of dehydration in older adults are much higher than those in younger people.

What Are the Dangers of Dehydration in Older Adults?
Not drinking enough can have serious repercussions on the health of seniors. Definitely, the most alarming issue is that of increased mortality and risk of serious impairment after stroke, with dehydrated patients being twice as likely not to survive and more than twice as likely to suffer impairment post-stroke than those who have adequate liquid intake.

Apart from that, dehydration can make you feel more tired, weak and dizzy, which increases one’s risk of falls, and affect your cognitive functioning, namely memory, attention, and ability to concentrate. Other common harmful effects of dehydration include:

    low blood pressure
    decreased kidney health
    constipation.

Needless to say, the consequences of dehydration in older adults are quite adverse. Luckily, it is possible to avoid these harmful effects by keeping up balanced fluid intake. Let's learn how you can avoid dehydration by looking at 5 common mistakes seniors make that can result in dehydration.

Mistake 1. Not Knowing How Much to Drink
Sometimes, it's very difficult to keep up with the latest recommendations, as some studies suggest that the 8 glasses of water a day rule is arbitrary, and others suggest you should drink a whole gallon of water daily. This is further complicated by different recommended liquid intakes per weight and age, turning daily needs into a matter of heated scientific debate.

To make things simple, let's enunciate and stick to the most up-to-date medical recommendations: doctors currently advise senior women to drink 8 glasses of liquids per day, and elderly men should drink 10 glasses. You can also ask your health provider or family doctor if you have any health conditions or other factors that require a higher or lower daily liquid intake.

Mistake 2. Assuming Liquids and Food Other Than Water Don't Count
If water is your preferred drink, there's nothing wrong with exclusively consuming water, but do keep in mind that, contrary to popular misconceptions, all liquids and even most foods will contribute to your daily liquid intake. Juices, milk, yogurts, tea, and coffee all consist primarily of water, so these will be just as hydrating for you as water.
In one study, scientists compared hydration levels in participants who drank equal quantities of water and coffee and found that the group that drank only coffee was just as hydrated as those who only drank water.
When trying to reach your daily liquid intake, don't forget about fruit and vegetables either, as some of these, such as watermelons, cucumbers, and strawberries, just to name a few, consist more than 90% of water.

Mistake 3. Believing One Can't Drink Enough Because of Certain Restrictions
Reaching a mature age can be accompanied by certain restrictions, some of which can limit your daily liquid intake, but they shouldn't. A recent study that interviewed people past the age of 75 about the issues they face in maintaining proper hydration levels found, for example, that seniors often worry about losing bladder control, even if they don't suffer from incontinence, and this fear makes them avoid liquids.

Patients suffering from chronic joint pain and swallowing difficulties likewise tend to drink less to avoid pain. While these issues may prompt patients to restrict their fluid intake, it's important to remember that avoiding dehydration is crucial for your health. You can work together with your doctor and family to make accommodations that would free you of the stigma surrounding incontinence and reduce the pain you experience. Making the bathroom easily accessible, for example, can minimize the pain you experience when moving around.

Mistake 4. Only Drinking When Thirsty or Active
If you think you can only get dehydrated when it's hot outside, or when you spend time outdoors, think again. The truth is that you can even become dehydrated when you sleep or sit on the couch all day, as our body requires water to carry out all sorts of important chemical reactions and metabolic processes literally all the time.

What further complicates the issue is that, as we age, our sense of thirst becomes less reliable than it was when we were young. This is especially true in people who suffer from dementia, diabetes, or those who had a stroke since these conditions damage the nervous system and can dramatically worsen one's ability to experience thirst. That's why seniors or their caretakers should make a conscious decision to maintain an adequate liquid intake, even if it sometimes involves forcing yourself to drink.

Mistake 5. Drinking Water on an Empty Stomach
If hydration is your goal, drinking plain water on an empty stomach is not so useful. This is because our body mainly absorbs the water together with electrolytes and other micro-nutrients, and pure drinking water has very little of those.

According to a 2015 study, drinking milk or orange juice for breakfast was more hydrating than drinking plain water, for example. So, to maintain better fluid balance, it's best to jump start your day by eating a light breakfast with a glass of water on the side, or by enjoying a different drink, such as milk or juice, instead of just water.

16 Signs There’s A Toxic, Congested Lymph In The Body And How To Help Drain It

Since we are constantly surrounded by numerous toxins from various sources, and lead fast-paced lifestyles, toxins start to accumulate and clog the lymphatic system, residing the body in stress and weakening the immunity.

According to Medical News Today:
“The lymphatic system is part of the immune system. It also maintains fluid balance and plays a role in absorbing fats and fat-soluble nutrients.

The lymphatic or lymph system involves an extensive network of vessels that passes through almost all our tissues to allow for the movement of a fluid called lymph. Lymph circulates through the body in a similar way to blood. There are about 600 lymph nodes in the body. These nodes swell in response to infection, due to a build-up of lymph fluid, bacteria, or other organisms and immune system cells.

The lymphatic system plays a key role in the immune system, fluid balance, and absorption of fats and fat-soluble nutrients. ”

The lymphatic system supports every body system, so it is very important to flush it out from time to time and prevent numerous conditions, from cellulite to cancer.

The first symptom of lymph congestion is dehydration. To check this issue, sip hot water every 10-15 minutes throughout the day, and at the end of the day, if your mouth is dry and thirsty, you are dehydrated and your lymph is congested. To rehydrate the body, repeat this therapy for 2 weeks.

Additionally, drink 1/2 your ideal body weight in ounces of water daily during these two weeks.
Here are the most common symptoms of lymphatic congestion:
  • Dry skin
  • Mild rash or acne
  • Swollen fingers
  • Brain fog
  • Weak immune system
  • Mild headaches
  • High histamine levels and irritations due to common environmental allergens
  • Occasional constipation, diarrhea and/or mucus in the stool
  • Swollen glands
  • Itchy skin
  • Tiredness
  • Soreness and/or stiffness in the morning
  • Bloating/water retention
  • Weight gain and extra belly fat
  • Breast swelling or soreness with each cycle
  • Hypersensitivity
All red-staining foods are powerful natural lymph-moving agents that detoxify the body, including beets, berries,  Echinacea, Red Root, cherries, pomegranate, and cranberries.

Beets are among the most successful ones, as they thin the bile and scrub the villi of the gut, which is where the digestive lymph originates.

Therefore, combine the warm water rehydration therapy with the consumption of red foods, and you will optimize the function of the lymphatic system and improve overall health.

Low potassium level can cause high blood pressure:

Studies suggest that low levels of potassium in the diet may be a risk factor for high blood pressure. Potassium is one of the seven important macrominerals that plays a vital role in your health. Potassium is important for maintaining cardiovascular health, blood pressure, fluid balance, bone and muscle strength. It is also involved in carbohydrate metabolism and can have a direct impact on your body weight. Potassium, which helps build muscles, may be particularly important to those trying to boost weight loss.

Perhaps, potassium is essential for every cell in your body. Not getting enough of this mineral can cause various health problems such as fatigue, constipation. Potassium deficiency, or hypokalemia, can also escalate to respiratory failure, paralysis, and painful gut obstructions.

What are the signs and symptoms of potassium deficiency?

Here are some signs you’re not getting enough potassium-
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Muscle cramps and spasms
  • Stomach upset, including constipation, cramping and bloating
  • Heart palpitations
  • Tingling and numbness
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Mood changes

How to increase your potassium intake

The good news is that you can increase your potassium levels naturally by consuming potassium-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, beans, and nuts. Foods that are high in potassium include bananas, mushrooms, spinach, potatoes, raisins, lentils, apricots, seeds, tomatoes, almonds, avocados, and cocoa.

The recommended daily intake for potassium, as per the World Health Organisation (WHO), is 3,510 mg per day. However, most of the global population is not meeting this recommendation. In the US, health authorities have set the recommended daily intake (RDI) for potassium at 4,700 mg.
The bottom line: While potassium is a key mineral that is vital to bodily function, adopting healthy eating patterns and dietary balance are keys to good health and keeping diseases at bay.

Here's Why It's Important to Fast Before a Blood Test

Before certain types of blood tests, doctors tell patients to fast — to avoid eating or drinking anything for 8 to 12 hours before the test. You also shouldn’t do anything that requires too much exertion, smoke, or even chew gum. It’s okay to take prescription medication, but not over-the-counter stuff. But if you’re starving and desperate for a caffeine fix, isn’t it okay to just have a little nosh and a couple sips of coffee?

Nope. When the doctor says to fast, they mean it. Here’s why.

The types of blood tests you need to fast for are typically ones that test for glucose in your blood, cholesterol level, kidney function, electrolyte and fluid balance, vitamin B12, iron, and an enzyme called GGT. Fasting creates a baseline that can be compared against previous or future tests, and eating sends nutrients into your bloodstream that can temporarily change the amount of the specific things the doctor is testing for. So, for example, if you eat something sweet right before a blood test, the amount of glucose in your blood will be higher than if you hadn’t eaten.

So unless you want your blood test results to be skewed, take the doctor’s advice and don’t eat or drink beforehand.

Cardiovascular disease and salt intake: Here’s why low-sodium diets may not help people with heart failure

Sodium is a mineral found naturally in a variety of foods. They are also added to foods for flavour and as part of preservatives and additives. While your body needs sodium to maintain normal fluid balance, consuming too much salt has been linked to many health conditions. Perhaps, people with heart disease are often recommended to follow a low-salt/low-sodium diet to improve their health.

However, a recent opinion says that there’s little proof that eating low-sodium diets may help people with heart ailments. A professor of Pediatrics, suggested that there isn’t enough evidence to back the medical organisations’ recommendations to steer clear of salt on people with various health issues. The Prof.  also highlights a recent report published to support his claims that diets low in sodium may not help prevent cardiovascular disease. For this study, researchers reviewed nine previous studies that involved 479 patients who were prescribed reduced sodium intake to treat heart failure.

The report states that there were no data from these studies that showed that salt restriction reduced mortality or cardiac disease, nor did it affect whether the patients were admitted to the hospital or influence how long they had to stay. Of the four outpatient studies, two showed reduced sodium diet improve heart function, and two did not, the report added.

Of the various trials and analyses he includes in his report, she cites the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)’s review that examined the effects of both sodium and potassium intake on health. AHRQ reported that decreasing dietary sodium intake ‘most likely reduces’ blood pressure. It also reported that increasing potassium intake most likely has the same effect. He also includes other systematic reviews that found increased intake of fibre was associated with a lower risk of heart disease.

Although both the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet and the Mediterranean diet have been linked to a reduced risk of heart failure, he argues that such diets may actually do more harm than good, while also adding that they would benefit from more controlled trials to prove their worth.

While people who take large amounts of salt might need to cut back their intake to reduce possible health risks and disease associated with high-sodium diet, more evidence is required before major health organisations update their current recommendations, according to the researcher. Furthermore, he suggests that doctors could advise people to make healthy holistic lifestyle changes in general, such as eating more healthfully and exercising regularly to improve heart health.
