Coronavirus vaccination: Why is getting your second dose of COVID vaccine important?

Why is getting your second dose of COVID vaccine important?

The second wave of coronavirus taught us a lot of things. Not only did it highlight the unpredictability of the disease itself, but also gave us an insight into the various ways we can prevent a potential third wave. However, amidst all the chaos, there are people who are still very reluctant to take the vaccine or believe that skipping their second shot is a possible option. But what you must know is that vaccines are our only mode of protection against the virus and that the second COVID shot is the most important of the two vaccines. Until and unless you receive the two doses, you are only partially protected from the virus.

Coronavirus vaccines are administered in two doses

Primary COVID vaccines in India i.e. Bharat Biotech's Covaxin and Serum Institute of India's Covishield, have to be administered in two doses. Even if you have received the first dose of the vaccine, you must take the second shot at all costs.

In terms of Covishield, the second dose can be taken after the gap of 12 weeks, whereas after the first dose of Covaxin, you can get your second dose after 4-6 weeks.

Why should you get both your COVID vaccine doses?

Getting only one dose of COVID vaccines only provides partial immunity, which means you are still at risk of developing severe COVID infections. Given the new emerging variants, it becomes all the more crucial that you take your vaccination process seriously and follow all the guidelines laid down by health officials.

Taking the second COVID shot gives you better protection against the virus

Besides lowering your chances of contracting the virus, getting your second shot and being fully vaccinated also ensures mild to no symptoms, even if you catch COVID-19. Apart from that, Recent reports have also suggested that people who are fully vaccinated are less susceptible to the Delta and Delta plus variant as compared to the ones who are partially vaccinated i.e. with one dose.

Given you and other members of the family are fully vaccinated, according to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), you can host gatherings indoors together and also be mask-free. However, it is advised to steer clear of those who are yet to receive their COVID shots.

The transmission of COVID-19 can be contained

The second vaccine shot is the most important as it provides full immunity against the virus. Besides, getting both the doses of the COVID vaccines can help us achieve herd immunity which can in turn contain the spread of the virus in communities.

Importance of getting your COVID vaccines

Considering the young and the elderly are both equally susceptible to the deadly coronavirus, it is important that each and every person, falling under the eligibility criteria, get themselves vaccinated. While you may not feel the need to get vaccinated considering you are young or have no pre-existing comorbidity, it is crucial that we protect the most vulnerable in our community and that can only be achieved through mass-vaccination.

Why tongue cleaning should be an important part of your brushing routine

Tongue cleaning is an equally essential step as brushing. While cleaning your teeth, you must never skip the tongue scrapping part. You can either use your toothbrush to clean your tongue lightly or use a tongue scrapper for the purpose. Here are some reasons which will support the fact, that tongue cleaning should be an important part of your brushing routine:

Keeps tooth decay at bay

While you pay a lot of attention to cleaning your teeth, your tongue is probably, the most neglected part of your mouth. Though brushing cleans the teeth of food particles, there is still some bacteria in the mouth which thrives on your tongue. These bacteria further leads to tooth decay and cavities. In order to keep tooth problems at bay, you must always brush your tongue lightly after brushing your teeth in order to deep clean your mouth.

Improves the appearance of tongue

Dirty tongues usually have a coating of them, which might make them look white or greyish in color. This coating is comprised of food particles and bacteria. Proper cleaning of tongue helps in removing these bacteria along with the dead skin on the tongue. Make sure you don’t scrub it too hard as it might injure the tongue. Regular scrubbing of tongue will help in keeping it pink and healthy.

Improves sense of taste

Usually your tongue gets coated because of different kinds of meals throughout the day. This hinders the ability of your tongue to taste. Proper cleaning of your tongue helps in removing this coating and helps your tongue distinguish between bitter, sweet, sour and salty in a better way.

Reduces bad breath

Brushing your teeth twice and thrice a day and still not able to get rid of bad breath? Well, the reason behind bad breath could also be a dirty tongue. Tongue becomes a storehouse of bacteria and even if your teeth are clean, these bacteria emit bad breath throughout the day. In order to keep bad breath at bay, make sure your clean your tongue every time your brush, with a toothbrush or a tongue cleaner.

Improves digestion

Tongue cleaning gets rid of bacteria which could hinder your digestive process. The process of tongue cleaning also produces a lot of saliva, which aids the breakdown of food.

Hope for brain related genetic disorders

Researchers have reversed a mutation in mice that leads to the genetic disorder WAGR syndrome — which causes intellectual disability and obesity in people — an advance that may lead to drugs for shaping the brain’s nerve connections.

The study noted that the gene editing technology they used was unique as it changed the epigenome — how the genes are regulated — without changing the actual genetic code of the mice.

The researchers found that a gene, C11orf46, was an important regulator during brain development.

They said, the gene turned on and off the direction-sensing proteins which helped guide the long fibres growing out of newly formed nerve cells, or neurons.

According to the researchers, these neurons are responsible for sending electrical messages, helping them form into a bundle which connects the two hemispheres of the brain, known as the corpus
callosum.

The scientists said, failure to properly form this bundled structure can lead to conditions such as intellectual disability, autism, or other brain developmental disorders.

“Although this work is early, these findings suggest that we may be able to develop future epigenome editing therapies that could help reshape the neural connections in the brain, and perhaps prevent developmental disorders of the brain from occurring,” said the study's co-author.

According to the study, WAGR syndrome — also known as chromosome 11p13 deletion syndrome — can result when some genes present along with C11orf46 are deleted by chance.

As part of the study, the researchers used a genetic tool, called a short hairpin RNA, to cause less of the C11orf46 protein to be made in the brains of mice.

They found that the neuron fibres in the mouse brains with less of the C11orf46 protein failed to properly form the corpus callosum — similar to what is seen in WAGR syndrome.

The researchers also found that a gene that makes another direction-sensing protein — Semaphorin 6a — was more actively produced in mice with lower C11orf46.

Following this, the researchers used a modified form of the gene editing technology, CRISPR, and tweaked a portion of the gene which regulated Semaphorin production in cells.

According to the study, this allowed C11orf46 to function normally in the brains of these mice, and restored the neuron fibre bundling, similar to how it is in normal brains. The researchers wrote in the study that there is therapeutic potential for shaping the brain’s nerve connections by targeting genes and proteins that activated and repressed the process.

Here is how sun damages our skin

Researchers have discovered the mechanism through which ultraviolet radiation, emitted by the sun, damages our skin.

What kind of ultraviolet radiation is the worst for our skin? And how exactly does the sun damage it? Those 2 questions are at the heart of a new study.

Ultraviolet radiation which the human eye can't perceive is broken down into 4 categories depending on wavelength and photon energy. Previous studies have documented how each type of UV radiation penerates to different depths into the skin and that prolonged exposure can lead to skin cancer, but exactly how it damages human skin in other ways has received less attention.

Researchers from cosmetics industry have debated for years whether UVA is worse than UVB for causing photo damage, which leads to the early onset of wrinkles and increases tissue fragility.

The study used samples of female breast skin, chosen because it is typically exposed only to low levels of sunlight that were subjected to various wavelengths of UV radiation. What the researchers found is that no UV range is more harmful than another, rather the damage scales with the amount of UV energy that the skin absorbs.

A more significant discovery, however, is the mechanism for how exactly UV damages skin. The study shows that UV weakens the bonds between cells in the stratum corneum, the top layer of skin by affecting proteins in corneodesmosomes that help the cells to adhere together. That's why sunburn leads to skin peeling.

Building on the findings of this study, the researchers are doing further research about how UV radiation affects deeper layers of the skin.

As those experiments continue, the researcher said the most important takeaway, for now, is that skin protection is important no matter what season of the year it is.

We're trying to push the message to use sunscreen not just for preventing skin cancer, but also to keep the integrity of your skin so you don't get infections or other problems, he said.

Keep rectal cancer at bay by adding nutrient-rich foods to your diet

Rectal cancer, also known as bowel, colon or colorectal cancer, affects the colon and the rectum. This is the third most common type of cancer in both men and women. Smart food choices may lower your risk of getting it. If you eat right, exercise, maintain a healthy weight and avoid alcohol you are likely to cut your odds of the disease by more than a third. The rectum is located in a tight space and there is hardly any space between it and other organs and structures in the pelvic cavity. Hence, surgical removal of this cancer is very difficult and chances of the cancer spreading to other parts is also high. Earlier, survival rate of this cancer is very low. But with advances made in the field of medicine, the prognosis is much better now.As with all other cancer, proper nutrition and diet are important to prevent rectal cancer. Doctors recommended nutritious foods and they usually ask patients to avoid saturated fat.

Here, we list some foods that you may include in your diet to prevent rectal cancer.

Dairy products: Dairy products can reduce your risk of rectal cancer. You may also include calcium supplements in your diet. Ask your about taking vitamin D and calcium supplements.

Whole Grains- These are rich in nutrients and very good sources of magnesium and fibre. They help in better bowel movement and may be effective in preventing this disease. Include oatmeal, whole wheat bread and brown rice in your diet.

Legumes- Beans, soybeans, peas and lentils are packed with fibre, protein and vitamins B and E. They also contain flavonoids and antioxidants. This helps prevent the growth of tumours.

Colourful fruits and veggies-These have phytochemicals that block the growth of cancer cells and fight the inflammation that fuel cancer. Have a lot of broccoli, cabbage and vitamin-C rich fruits like oranges and kiwi.
