5 Secrets For Caring For Your Hands

Your hands generally give away your age a lot quicker than your face. But with proper care, and this handy advice, your hands will keep your age hidden for longer.

Wash your hands correctly

Too much soap can make your hands dry and flaky, so keep these essential tips in mind:

• Don't use antibacterial soap unless absolutely necessary. Opt for a moisturizing soap instead, such as one with jojoba oil, olive oil or aloe vera.

• Wash your hands with warm, but not hot water - this will help preserve the natural protective layer.

• As opposed to electric dryers, opt for paper towels instead.

Wear gloves

Hands are constantly affected by external factors such as cold, chemicals and dry air. To minimize the damage to your skin, wear gloves as follows:

• Use leather, fur gloves or mittens for cold weather.

• Wear rubber or latex gloves for household chores - washing the dishes, mopping floors, cleaning the bathtub etc.

• Use cloth gloves for gardening.

Moisten your hands regularly
Your hands need scrubbing and masks at least once a week:

• Make a hand mask from the products you have in your fridge. Mix half an avocado, an egg yolk and a tablespoon of lemon juice, applying it to your hands and letting it rest for 20 minutes.

• Use a mix of olive oil and sugar as a scrub.

• If using a body scrub, apply that to your hands.

Use sunscreen
Hyperpigmentation can make your hands look older than your age. But this does not occur due to aging or liver dysfunction, but rather, the effect of the sun. To avoid pigment spots do the following:

• Regularly apply sunscreen to your hands.

• Citrus fruits are a good natural 'whitener,' so make a mask out of 1 tbsp lemon juice,1 tbsp milk, and 1 tsp honey.

8 Common Misconceptions about Moles

There are many false facts regarding suntan and melanoma that people believe. Some people sound the alarm as soon as a mole starts to grow and change its appearance, while others don’t remove a dodgy mole until it’s absolutely necessary. Below are 8 popular myths about moles that should have been debunked a long time ago.
1. Melanoma Most Commonly Appears on the Face and Hands
Moles
It’s easy to spot weird moles and spots on your face, but according to statistics, the most commonly affected areas are the back in men and on the legs in women. Doctors advise paying close attention to areas where moles come in contact with clothes or shoes due to a higher risk of injury.

With every sunburn, especially the ones that you got in early childhood, the potential for the development of melanoma increases. Furthermore, if a member of your immediate family has had melanoma, you have a higher risk of getting it.

2. A Particular Danger is Posed by Big, Dark, and Raised Moles
During the early stages, a malignant tumor looks like a normal mole. If you have more than 50 moles on your whole body, then it’s a good idea to get them all examined by an oncologist and a dermatologist. Blue-eyed, light-skinned, red-haired, and freckle-faced people are in the high-risk group.

Dark spots that look like little moles on an eyeball are a cause for concern and require an ophthalmologist examination. In the majority of cases, they’re harmless, but some can be a sign of malignant eye damage.

3. Only Cancerous Moles should be Removed
Moles
Doctors can remove any mole if it’s physically uncomfortable or aesthetically displeasing. For example, if you think that you might injure it accidentally or that it doesn’t look good on your face, go and have it removed.

4. Getting a Mole Removed with a Scalpel is an Outdated Practice
A scalpel is the most effective way to remove a mole. This is because a scalpel is able to remove a mole completely, eradicating the threat of any cancerous cells spreading. The removed mole is then sent for a histological examination to see if it contains cancerous cells. If it does, treatment will begin immediately.

However, when it comes to the ears, face, fingers, or genitals, doctors recommend radio-frequency surgery.

5. Some People Have a Lot of Freckles from Birth. You Don’t Have to worry about It
Moles
There is a dysplastic nevus syndrome which is characterized by multiple moles and freckles on the body. Every single mole has the potential to turn into malicious melanoma. Therefore, people with such a skin condition should check their skin using a dermascope – which takes photos of the skin and traces the appearance of new moles.

People with freckles are vulnerable to UV rays. Freckles don’t contain much melanin, which is why they are paler than moles. Therefore, people with freckles should use sunscreen with a protective factor of 35 or more when out in the sun.

6. Dark-Skinned People don’t Need Sunscreen
People with darker skin do have more protection from UV rays, but they’re still a long way away from African elephants, whose thick skin and special genes make them impervious to harmful rays. This is why dark-skinned people still need to use sunscreen, put on headwear, and avoid going out in the midday sun.

7. If You Injure a Mole It Should Be Removed
Moles
Firstly, if you injure a mole, you need to get it cleaned up to avoid contamination. Then, after it’s been cleaned, apply an ointment that helps with tissue regeneration. After that, schedule an appointment with an oncologist and dermatologist as quickly as possible.

Injuring a mole doesn’t necessarily mean that it has to be removed. However, very often, inner pathological processes make it very vulnerable to further injuries. A doctor’s examination can help to eliminate the risk of melanoma developing.

8. If You Rip a Mole Off, You’ll Get Cancer
There’s no clear evidence that this can lead to melanoma. Very often, an injured mole that turns out to be a melanoma was already cancerous.

If a mole is bleeding, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have caught it somehow. Pathological processes inside a mole can also cause bleeding. This is a very dangerous symptom that shouldn’t be ignored.

11 Things We Should Stop Doing to Prevent Aging

Aging gracefully comes easily to some, and less easily to others. Sometimes it's just to do with having good genes, but often it is the decisions we make during our lifetime that determine how fast we'll age. You may not realize it, but most people make mistakes every single day that make them age faster than they should, harming their skin and quickening the appearance of old age. \

Here are 11 mistakes we all make that age us:

1. You try to do too many things at once (Multitasking).
If your to-do list is longer than your arm and you are dealing with the stress of juggling many projects or tasks at once, you're doing yourself a disservice, says Raymond Casciari, Chief Medical Officer at St. Joseph Hospital. Several studies have shown that day-to-day stress triggers the release of free radicals in the body, which damage cells and quicken the aging process. The doctor suggests focusing on one task at a time.

2. You rarely pass on dessert.
aging
Other than being an obviously unhealthy habit, having a sweet tooth may be adding years to your face, as sugar molecules attach themselves to protein fibers in our cells, a process known as glycation. This can lead to an ashen look, dark circles around the eyes, a loss of facial contours, wrinkles, puffiness and bigger pores. So if you want to hold on to that youthful glow, don't overdo the sugar.

3. You get less than 5-6 hours of sleep a night.
Not getting enough sleep doesn't only give you black bags under your eyes, but has been linked, through several studies, to a shorter life span. According to Dr. Casciari, the founder of a sleep lab at St. Joseph Hospital, getting about seven hours of sleep is optimal. So if you're nodding off, low on energy or finding it hard to focus, you're probably not sleeping enough, and it may age you faster than you'd like.

4. You spend most of your day sitting.
Sitting and leading a sedentary lifestyle are some of the worst contributors to aging people in the modern world. Most people do very little physical activity, and the result is an increased risk of kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer and of course obesity.

Studies show that people who exercised 150 minutes a week or more lived 10-13 years longer on average.

5. You don't use any eye creams.
The skin around your eyes is thinner than the rest of your face, and that is why it usually starts showing signs of aging sooner. Keeping the eye area moisturized can take years off your face. The best creams contain Retin-A, which is a form of vitamin A. But you can also add antioxidants, hyaluronic acid and vitamin C.

6. You only use sunscreen when on vacation.
If you only use sunscreen at the beach, note that you may actually be doing more harm to your skin while running errands and driving. Skin damage accumulates, and the sun's rays are the primary reason for aging skin. Dr Taylor, associate professor of dermatology, recommends that you use an SPF between 30-50 for daily protection.

7. You wear too much makeup. This is not a judgment, just a fact. Many make-up products are oil-based, and can clog your pores and cause outbreaks. Overusing skin products with fragrances, alcohol agents and chemicals that irritate may cause premature lines and wrinkles.

8. You sleep with your face against the pillow
aging
Sleeping on your stomach or side with your face mashed into the pillow may create wrinkles and make you age faster. Our facial skin gets less flexible with time, and so as we lie on the pillow night after night, our skin may not spring back and smooth the lines you had, and so the pillow can leave permanent marks on our face. So sleep on your back or invest in a satin pillowcase that'll keep your skin smooth.

9. You keep your house very warm.
When you turn up the thermostat or light a fireplace because it's cold, it's tempting to make it hot and toasty inside. But the problem is that the thermostat, and also the fireplace, suck moisture out of the air in the house, which leads to dry skin. If this goes on, as indeed in cold climates it may, it will lead to damaged skin with aging effects.

Invest in a humidifier, and set it to 40-60% humidity. This will free your skin from the itching, scratching and even flaking that comes with dry air. Another way to go is placing a wet towel over a radiator or a bowl of cold water in the room.

10. You purse your lips
aging
Drinking your beverages through a straw can help you avoid staining your teeth, but just like squinting can give you wrinkles around the eyes, so can pursing your lips give you wrinkles around the mouth.

By the way, this also often happens when you smoke a cigarette.

11. You've stopped eating fat altogether
Some amounts of fat are required to maintain a youthful appearance and feeling, according to Franci Cohen, nutritionist and exercise physiologist from Brooklyn, NY. Heart healthy Omega 3 fatty acids, which you can find in oily fish such as mackerel and salmon, as well as nuts like walnuts and flax seeds, will keep your skin plump and supple. This will prevent wrinkles while also boosting the health of both your brain and heart.
