Keep rectal cancer at bay by adding nutrient-rich foods to your diet

Rectal cancer, also known as bowel, colon or colorectal cancer, affects the colon and the rectum. This is the third most common type of cancer in both men and women. Smart food choices may lower your risk of getting it. If you eat right, exercise, maintain a healthy weight and avoid alcohol you are likely to cut your odds of the disease by more than a third. The rectum is located in a tight space and there is hardly any space between it and other organs and structures in the pelvic cavity. Hence, surgical removal of this cancer is very difficult and chances of the cancer spreading to other parts is also high. Earlier, survival rate of this cancer is very low. But with advances made in the field of medicine, the prognosis is much better now.As with all other cancer, proper nutrition and diet are important to prevent rectal cancer. Doctors recommended nutritious foods and they usually ask patients to avoid saturated fat.

Here, we list some foods that you may include in your diet to prevent rectal cancer.

Dairy products: Dairy products can reduce your risk of rectal cancer. You may also include calcium supplements in your diet. Ask your about taking vitamin D and calcium supplements.

Whole Grains- These are rich in nutrients and very good sources of magnesium and fibre. They help in better bowel movement and may be effective in preventing this disease. Include oatmeal, whole wheat bread and brown rice in your diet.

Legumes- Beans, soybeans, peas and lentils are packed with fibre, protein and vitamins B and E. They also contain flavonoids and antioxidants. This helps prevent the growth of tumours.

Colourful fruits and veggies-These have phytochemicals that block the growth of cancer cells and fight the inflammation that fuel cancer. Have a lot of broccoli, cabbage and vitamin-C rich fruits like oranges and kiwi.

Fear of new foods may up heart disease, diabetes risk

Food neophobia -- or fear of new foods -- may lower the quality of a person's dietary intake, and increase the risk of lifestyle disorders such as cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes.

Food neophobia is an eating behaviour trait in which a person refuses to taste and eat food items or foods they are not familiar with.

Researchers  examined the independent impact of eating behaviour, and especially food neophobia, on dietary quality as well as lifestyle diseases and their risk factors.

"The findings reinforce the idea that a versatile and healthy diet plays a key role, and even has an independent role in health," said one of the researchers.

The study monitored individuals aged between 25 and 74 years during a seven-year follow-up.

Food neophobia has been observed to be a strongly hereditary trait: twin studies have found that up to 78 per cent of it may be hereditary.

The trait can be easily measured using the FNS questionnaire (Food Neophobia Scale), which contains ten questions charting the respondent's eating behaviour.

The FNS questionnaire was also used to measure and quantify the fear of new foods in this study.

Food neophobia is common in children and older persons, in particular. Few studies have so far been carried out on food neophobia in the adult population.

Traits similar to food neophobia, including picky and fussy eating, also occur in different age groups in the population. These eating behaviours may also have a significant impact on dietary quality and subsequently health.

As different traits associated with eating behaviours have overlapping characteristics making a clear-cut distinction between them is challenging.

The study found that food neophobia is linked to poorer dietary quality: for example, the intake of fibre, protein and monounsaturated fatty acids may be lower and the intake of saturated fat and salt greater in food neophobic individuals.

Additionally, a significant association was found between food neophobia and adverse fatty acid profile and increased level of inflammatory markers in blood.

Subsequently, food neophobia also increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases or type 2 diabetes.

It is often thought that the impacts of eating behaviour and diet on health are mainly mediated through weight changes alone.

In this study, however, the impacts of food neophobia emerged independently regardless of weight, age, socioeconomic status, gender or living area.

"If we can intervene in deviant eating behaviours, such as food neophobia, already in childhood or youth. This will help to prevent potential future health problems early on," he said.

"Hereditary factors and our genotype only determine our predisposition to food neophobia. Early childhood education and care and lifestyle guidance in adulthood can provide support in the development of a diverse diet," he said.
