Future generations will face greater health problems due to climate change

Children are growing up in a warmer world that will hit them with more and different health problems than their parents experienced, an international report by doctors said.

With increasing diarrhea diseases, more dangerous heat waves, air pollution and increases in mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever and malaria, man-made global warming is already harming public health around the world, the annual climate change and health report from the medical journal said.

But the report and its authors said they worry that the future health of the world’s youngest people will get even grimmer if emissions of heat-trapping gases aren’t curbed.

“A child born today as they go through their lives they are going to be increasingly exposed to more and more harms that I did not experience,” said study co-author Dr Renee Salas, a Boston emergency room physician and professor at Harvard.

“I cannot think of a greater health emergency,” Salas said.

Already, the number of days when conditions are ripe for the spread of the water-borne bacteria Vibiro, a major cause of debilitating diarrhoea, have doubled since 1980 with last year ranking second-highest on record, the report said. Because of the warming climate, 29 percent more of the U.S. coastline is vulnerable to Vibrio. The report also said the cholera version of Vibrio has increased by nearly 10 percent.

Nine of the top 10 years where conditions were most ripe for dengue fever transmission have occurred since 2000, the report said.

Those diseases hit children harder, the report said. And children, the elderly, the poor and the sick are most hurt during extreme heat with dangerous overheating, respiratory disease and kidney problems.

“Children are the most vulnerable. They will bear the vast majority of the burden of climate change,’’ said Dr Nick Watts, an Australian emergency room physician and the lead author of the global report. “Their health will be hit by climate change in a profoundly different way.”

While medicine and public health have improved over the decades, allowing people to live longer, climate change “threatens to undermine all of the gains we’ve had,” Salas said.

Dr Cindy Parker, an environmental health professor at Johns Hopkins University, praised the peer-reviewed report, which she wasn’t part of, but she worried that focusing on the health effects that have already happened lessens the urgency of the future.

“Climate change is a risk amplifier,” Parker said in an email. So as bad as the health problems are, add in water and food shortages caused by climate change and there will be more social unrest and conflict around the world that will still hit the United States in indirect ways, she said.

As an emergency room doctor, Salas said diseases that spread farther because of a changing climate, such as Lyme Disease, are something she has to consider when she treats patients.

During an emergency room shift in July, Salas saw an elderly man during a heatwave with a body temperature of 106 degrees. The ambulance crew said he lived on the top floor of a public housing complex with no air conditioning and when they opened the door “there was this wave of heat that hit them.”

Salas was able to save him. But as a doctor, she struggles with cases where there is no way to treat the patient, such as with devastating bleeding inside the brain. With climate change health problems, she said, the remedy is stopping emissions of heat-trapping gases from the burning of coal, oil and gas.

“We can’t ‘doctor’ our way out of this,” said Dr Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association, who wasn’t part of the study but praised it. “We must address the root causes of climate change.”

Daily habits that tell how good or bad your future will be

Daily habits reveal about our personality

Not many would realise it, but we are a product of what we repeatedly do. Our behavioural pattern by frequent repetition over the time gets etched on our brain that later turn into automatic actions. And, that’s what is called, a habit.

What does habit signify?

These habits are a mirror to our personality, which also sometimes serves as a non-verbal form of communication. For example, having tea every morning with breakfast or picking your nose (no matter how good or disgusting it sounds) these tiny behavioural patterns become our habit.

Habits and future predictions

Back in ancient times, people used this information of one’s habit to understand each other. But, did you know that these habits also tell us about how our future will be?

Our habits- good or bad, actually reveals a lot about us, like thoughts, basic nature, etc. The following slides would explain how simple daily habits have a huge impact on our future and decide how good or bad our future would be

1. Leaving an uncleaned bathroom

People who do not bother to clean the bathroom after using it, or dump dirty clothes around the bathroom floor is linked with weakening the position of Moon in birth chart, and has a negative effect career wise.

2. Dragging feet while walking

This is considered a bad habit by many scriptures too. It is said dragging your feet indicates bringing along the dirt en-route your destiny. This habit signifies a negative impact of Rahu in life.

3. Leaving dirty utensils on the table
Often people have the habit of leaving their used utensils after the meals. They wait for someone else to pick it up and clean. This habit signifies that the person has the least regard for efforts and struggle to find stable success. Cleaning the area after you finish the meal, including putting away the dirty utensils discards Shani and Chandra dosh.

4. Never washing hands and face

After spending the entire day outside, when you get back home, the first thing should be washing your hands, feet, and face. Not only it’s hygienic, but washing your face, hands and feet also washes away the negativity you might have brought back home. And, it ends up bringing relief to your stressed and chaotic mind.

5. Cleaning the puja room daily

Your puja room or the corner where you worship in your home must be always clean as this is the place from where the positive energies flow in. Leaving the idols or the area dirty would initiate the imbalance in the planets of your birth chart, leading to unfortunate results in academics, finance, and family life.

6. Being awake until late

The ancient culture suggests that it’s wise to sleep in night, when the Moon is strong and bright. The moonlight soothes our mind and body, and allows it to heal while our senses are calmed down during sleep. Whereas, being awake would mean making our senses forcibly work and avoiding the Moon to work in its natural way. Doing so, leads to growing stress and health problems; sometimes long term damage to health.

7. Offering cold water to guests

When someone enters your home, they bring along their energies which interferes with your own energy field. Ancient sages suggest that offering cold water to your guests calms down their inner body heat. This habit also discards off Rahu dosh and kaalsarp dosha in your birth chart.

8. Scattering footwear

If anyone has the habit of leaving their footwear scattered around the house, then it signifies an increase in the number of enemies for them. Shastras explain that disrespecting your footwear affects your social status.

9. Dishevelled kitchen

If someone keeps their kitchen unclean and in disheveled condition then it leads to the negative planetary motion of Mars in your horoscope. People, who have a Mangal dosh in their birth chart, are advised to especially keep the area dedicated to Goddess Annapurna clean.

10. Watering plants daily

People who regularly and religiously water plants never have problems in their love and family life. Also, according to shastras, this habit throw-outs any kinds of doshas from life because of imbalance in Sun, Moon, Venus, and Mercury.

11. Making your bed
People, who rarely change their bed sheets and almost never make their bed after waking up, often face issues related to focus. They have lousy lifestyle and despite best of efforts never get what they desire. Changing this habit would definitely turnaround the time.

12. Talking loudly

People speaking on a pitch higher than their usual tone are often faced with problems related to Shani. All your life, you will struggle to keep relationships in good shape and maintain sanity in family life.

13. Dirty feet

Some people have least regard of personal hygiene, especially their feet. Your feet take the load of your entire body and not take care of its hygiene would be jeopardising the pillar of your health. This habit signifies that the person never bothers to strengthen or maintain their family values, which doesn’t ensure a peaceful future.

14. Disrespecting elders

If someone has the habit of neglecting the elders of the family, disrespecting their existence or turning deaf to their needs, then their home never fully prospers. It leads to jeopardising career, social position and family life in the long run.

15. Spitting
People who scatter their spit around their living habitat, workplace or in nature, actually throw away their success, social respect, and wealth. This habit leads to the wrath of Goddess Laxmi.

16. Addiction to drugs and liquor

Making a habit or getting addicting to such things attracts the negative effect of Rahu, which leads to stress, and migraine. These people may work hard, but seldom get the chance to enjoy the fruits of their effort.

Here's Why It's Important to Fast Before a Blood Test

Before certain types of blood tests, doctors tell patients to fast — to avoid eating or drinking anything for 8 to 12 hours before the test. You also shouldn’t do anything that requires too much exertion, smoke, or even chew gum. It’s okay to take prescription medication, but not over-the-counter stuff. But if you’re starving and desperate for a caffeine fix, isn’t it okay to just have a little nosh and a couple sips of coffee?

Nope. When the doctor says to fast, they mean it. Here’s why.

The types of blood tests you need to fast for are typically ones that test for glucose in your blood, cholesterol level, kidney function, electrolyte and fluid balance, vitamin B12, iron, and an enzyme called GGT. Fasting creates a baseline that can be compared against previous or future tests, and eating sends nutrients into your bloodstream that can temporarily change the amount of the specific things the doctor is testing for. So, for example, if you eat something sweet right before a blood test, the amount of glucose in your blood will be higher than if you hadn’t eaten.

So unless you want your blood test results to be skewed, take the doctor’s advice and don’t eat or drink beforehand.

8 Reasons to See Fighting in Your Relationship Positively

We all experience moments of quarrels and disagreements with our spouses from time to time, and no one enjoys this because we all grew up with the idea that a fight is something negative. Well, this fact is only partially true, because a disagreement, differing opinions, and fights that are conducted within a loving and supportive framework can be much more positive than you think. In fact, there are many psychology and relationship experts who even point to a host of advantages that are related to fights in relationships, and after you get to know them, you’ll understand that fights really don’t have to hurt your relationship...

1. Conflicts are a sign of a mature relationship

As long as you aren’t fighting about leaving the toilet seat up, who’s eaten the last slice of cake or what you’re going to watch tonight on TV, marital disputes are a sign of a certain maturity to be assessed. Many of us try to avoid conflicts with our environment as much as possible, but such an approach in relationships can be devastating, which is why it’s good to fight from time to time to act for what is important to us. As we mentioned earlier, these fights should be over important issues and must be held in a mature way without personally attacking the other side or shouting. Remember that your goal shouldn’t be to convince the other person and change their opinion, rather, "We need to reach an agreement, and maybe there’ll be a compromise that requires effort from both sides."

2. Conflicts are a sign that you care

The easiest way to deal with most of the things that bother us about our partners is simply to ignore them, but we don’t. Why? Because we care and we are prepared to deal with the discomfort and sometimes with the emotional pain caused by a fight, in order to invest in improving our marital future. Just like many parents and children who fight, an argument between spouses indicates commitment, hope for a better future and a deep bond, not a desire to “throw in the towel.”

3. Fighting can improve communication

It’s difficult to create a relationship with mutual trust if you do not raise points of disagreement and take care of them when necessary, even though sometimes doing so will lead to an unpleasant argument. In fact, couples who know how to fight in a healthy and correct way only benefit from talking to their partners about things that bother them. A good fight helps people honestly share the things that bother them without feeling ashamed or insecure, and helps couples promote changes in behavior through verbal communication.

4. Conflicts are an inseparable part of a healthy relationship

According to marital and psychologist experts, relationships have a number of key principles such as mutual respect, shared interests, sexual compatibility, and even fights. So, if a couple never argues it may be a sign that something is wrong in their relationship, and that neither side wants to improve the existing situation. The truth is that there is no such thing as perfect relationships and relationships between people are something that constantly changes, moves and develops, so you should always have a desire to engage in the parts of it that can be improved, and sometimes this creates inevitable friction. Keep in mind that although this situation isn’t desirable, it is part of reality and should be understood that at its core it is not necessarily a bad thing.

5. Conflicts strengthen your relationship

During a fight, it is important to remember that the goal is not to "win" or to cause the other side to "lose," but to teach and learn to create a process of positive change. The things you say and hear represent thoughts, preferences, personality and core values on both sides, and sometimes you’ll even be surprised by what you might discover about yourself! Exposing this information is an act that requires a lot of openness and willingness to be hurt, which is why the relationship grows stronger when and if the other side responds correctly and changes the conflict from something negative to an experience that strengthens the relationship in the long term.

6. Feelings of resentment can be mollified through arguments

Being part of a relationship is a wonderful thing, but it isn’t always easy and there will always be a need for mutual compromise around certain issues. Sometimes it’s natural to feel that you’re more flexible than your partner and give up more of them, and as a result, a feeling of resentment can begin to develop. The most direct way to deal with this situation is simply to raise the issues that bother you, to talk about them openly even if there is disagreement, and reach a situation where you feel that your relationship is more balanced than it was. But remember, it’s difficult and almost near impossible to achieve perfect balance in any area of your relationship and co-existence at home. You can’t start holding grudges about every little thing, as this behavior is destructive to a relationship.

7. Reasonable arguments that don’t lead to hurt feelings are a sign of long-term relationships

According to one of the authors of the bestselling book on human communication, avoiding unpleasant conversation about a topic that bothers us is a big mistake that affects all relationships, especially in romantic relationships. This avoidance is the first step on the road to creating a communication crisis because our feelings aren’t going anywhere, and if they are kept in and start piling up, it will inevitably lead to a chaotic and emotional argument. Conversely, fights about issues that are bothering you in a timely manner can help you stabilize your relationship in the long term.

8. Without differences in opinion, marriage can be boring

The reason that ends this list may seem childish to you, but many experts say it is more important than you think. True, everyone's healthy logic suggests that the last thing couples need is to fight, and that, despite all the positive points described so far, you would still prefer to be in a relationship where there is total agreement on all subjects. Now stop for a moment and think about all the times you reconciled after a quarrel, about the times when you reached a compromise that both sides were pleased with, about the progress you made following differences of opinion, and about loving your spouse even though they are so different from you.
Of course, a relationship shouldn’t be based on differences of opinion to stimulate conversations and feeling, but these are natural products of difference between people which sometimes lead to tiffs. The way we treat the quarrel is as important as its essence, which is why it’s important to remember all the points brought up in this article. Disagreements aren’t the end of the world, they’ll be exactly what you make of them, for better or worse, and they’ll probably always be an inseparable part of life. So, don’t feel bad because you go through them and remember that love is a powerful force that can always help you cope with such challenges and grow stronger.

Learn to Be Optimistic Around Negative People

Being optimistic helps in many ways, one of it is having better health, as people worry less. When you've less tension, then better blood circulation leading to better health. Being optimistic is quite easy, just like saying the glass is half full than saying half empty !

1. Choose to Be Optimistic
Life is all about choices. You can opt to spend the entire day reading or cleaning. You can make dinner yourself or choose to go out to eat. You can make that call you've been thinking about for a while or you can put it off for another day.
What's more, you can also choose to be positive or you can choose to simply carry on living as you are. Being optimistic in a negative world starts with the decision to be positive and to carry on that way for the rest of your life.

2. Avoid Energy-Draining Vampires
Some people call them 'toxic' while others call them 'whiners', but we can all recognize a pessimist when we see one, and can recognize their horrible ability to suck all of the positive energy out of a room. This is why it's important to establish healthy boundaries with such people, otherwise, they might end up sucking all of the life out of you.
3. Imagine a Positive Future
It might sound a little pathetic right now, but actually writing down your ideas of an optimistic future will make a huge difference when it comes to your overall outlook on life. You may also want to consider a serious challenge you have in life right now, and simply sit back and think about all of the possible positive outcomes.
4. Bestow Positivity on Others
Making others feel good about themselves can have lasting positive effects on your own life. Never forget to praise your family, friends, and colleagues for the good things which they are doing in their lives, even if they don't directly affect you. Of course, you should never forget to praise yourself either, even for what might seem like the most trivial of things.
5. Recognize Your Negative Thought Patterns
It’s fine to acknowledge that bad things in life might happen at any time. After all, ignoring reality isn’t the most helpful tactic either. Being excessively negative though can seriously sabotage your chances of finding happiness in this life.
When you begin to think in a negative manner, take a moment to work out just how realistic your thoughts really are. Reframing your awkwardly negative thoughts into more realistic patterns may be the key to helping you maintain an optimistic outlook.

6. Practice Gratitude
Spending some time thinking about all of the things you have to be thankful for will often provide you with an instant optimism boost. You could even choose to keep a gratitude journal, where you can jot down anything which makes you smile. If nothing else, take a moment every once in a while to stop, smile and be thankful for the positive things in life.
