Behaviors That Harm Our Immune System

As you probably already know, the health of your immune system is actually YOUR health. The better it is off, the more resistant you are to invading viruses and infection. Many seem to think that the biggest influence on your immune system is vaccinations and diseases. This is only a small part of the story.

Your habits, those things you do daily, have a huge impact on your immune system and ultimately - on how protected you are from illness, especially as you get older. Here are 8 behaviors that damage your immune system and that you should avoid for your own good.

1. You don't chit-chat enough
It is becoming more and more clear that social interaction isn't just healthy for the mind but also for the body. The mere social behavior may contribute a lot to our well being. Research has shown that a low level of social interaction at home, work, and the community makes us more likely to become sick.

When we lack social engagement, our brains get flooded with anxiety-generating chemicals, and we end up actually living shorter lives than our more sociable friends. One research that our of 270+ people between the ages of 18-55, those that had 6 or more regular social interactions were 4 times better at holding off cold viruses.

How to solve: We all have hectic lives at times but don't forget to cultivate and maintain your friendships, they may be just as important as your gym membership.

2. You don't get enough sleep
There's always something to do, and this day and age - always something to watch. But staying up late and waking up early is associated by many health experts with a weak immune system that has a reduced amount of killer white blood cells to fight germs and viruses with. A study conducted by the University of Chicago found that men who sleep only 4 hours a night, for 1 week only, only produced half (!) the amount of antibodies designed to fight off flu, compared to those sleeping 7.5-8.5 hours per night.

How to solve: Most adults require 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night, but if you're still tired half an hour after waking up - your quality of sleep is probably not so good. Try to get enough sleep and if you are tired - consult a sleep specialist, because sleep is crucial to your immune system and overall well-being.

3. You're a downer
Serious research has unequivocally shown that people who tend to look at the glass as half empty and with a leak, have more stress in their lives and worse health. Those that are more optimistic have a higher T-cell count, a better immune response, and more powerful white cells. Now, of course, it could be that optimistic people take better care of themselves and their health, but it seems quite logical that a blacked look at life will cause your body to also get depressed and with it your immune system.

How to solve: It's not that easy to just clap your hands and poof! you're an optimist. It takes a real commitment to change your

speech and thought patterns, simply by asking yourselves: "what other way can I look at this? Is there a less terrible way to judge this?" Try it, a little at a time. Try to really understand why something, or someone, might be better than you thought. Change will come with time, and with it - a boost to your immune system.

4. You fight with your spouse in the wrong way
A very interesting research by UCLA found that couples that discuss their problems openly receive the same boost to their immune system and killer cell count as they would get from mild exercise. On the flip side, couples that fight by sarcasm, insults and passive-aggressive behavior have fewer T cells, higher levels of stress hormones (logically) and may take up to 40% loner to recover from injuries than their more open and positive counterparts.

How to solve: Habits and relationship dynamics are also hard things to change, and many couples rely on friendly banter. That's fine, it is when that banter becomes a bit TOO sharp that you start suffering, and it's never good for the relationship either. If you have a real problem, discussing it bravely and openly with your spouse is not just healthy for your relationship, but apparently also for your own body.

5. No break from the rat race of stress
Everyone deals with stress on occasion, but what happens when we are under stress day after day, with hardly any letup? What happens is that your immune system starts experiencing a decline in its ability to fight infection, virus, and germ. Periods of stress that do not let up quickly will cause your killer cell count to drop and turn your immune system more sluggish. It is a known fact that widows and widowers are a lot more likely to get sick in the year following the death of their spouse than those who have not gone through this major loss and stress-inducing event.

How to solve: To each their own. We all have things that relieve our stress, whether it's a scented bath, going to the gym, getting off work for a few days or anything in between. Remember those things that relax you and go do them on a regular basis. That's right, make room in your busy calendar for 'relaxation' - that is if you want to live a healthier life.

6. You borrow stuff from other people
Take our advice: If you need to use a pen, bring your own. If you need a calculator, bring your own. If you need a laptop... well, you get the point. Cold and flu germs are passed, more often than not, by hand to hand contact. You never know where an object has been and who has touched it. We're not saying run away when someone offers you a pen, but we would suggest not making a habit of borrowing other people's stuff - you never know when you might pick something up and pass it along to your family.

How to solve:  Make a list of the most common items you will need to use during the day. Carry a bag or have some deep pockets for some basic stuff like a pen. Don't borrow stuff that you can bring from home.

7. Leave those antibiotics alone
Antibiotics were invented to fight serious infections and germs. Taking antibiotics every time you have a slight illness or a few symptoms will cause your body to develop a more serious resistance to antibiotics, and so you will become vulnerable to the more serious cases of infection. Research has found that patients tended to take a lot of antibiotics have a more suppressed immune system, which means you will get more sick in the future, so you are just postponing this light sickness for a more serious illness down the line.

How to solve:  Only take antibiotics when you have a bacterial infection, take as much as ordered, but do not use them to prevent illness unless instructed to specifically by your doctor. Don't save antibiotics you didn't use for the future, use as much as told and throw away the rest.

8. Why so serious?
This may be no laughing matter, but your immune system loves a good chuckle. Research has shown that emotions accompanying real laughter cause a decrease in the level of stress hormones in the body as well as certain immune cells. In a recent research conducted at the Loma Lina University of Medicine, adults watching a funny video for as little as an hour showed significant increases in their immune system activity.

How to solve:  Well, we think this one explains itself! Laugh more, people! Enjoy your favorite comedies, meet with your funniest friends, read silly comics and memes and just open yourself to funny experiences!

1. Excessive use of technology

Smartphones, tablets, televisions, and computers - all of them pass our time pleasantly and allow us to consume information whenever and wherever we wish. However, a study, which examined media consumption habits of 318 participants, showed that various media outlets also act as a double-edged sword and may encourage symptoms of depression. The emergence of these symptoms was explained by the fact that multitasking, such as watching TV and reading news on a smartphone simultaneously, overloads the brain with too much information to work properly, leading to exhaustion and ultimately depression.

2. Poor nutrition

It’s no secret that our dietary habits have a direct impact on our overall health. But while many choose to focus on negative effects such as being overweight, our food also has the power to change our mood completely. In a study published, participants that ate more processed foods had more symptoms of depression than their counterparts who avoided doing so. Another study found that participants whose diets were low in fish suffered more depression than their counterparts, probably due to lack of omega-3 fatty acids. These acids are commonly associated with regulating levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain that affects our mood.

3. Going to sleep late

Sometimes all we want to do at the end of a hard and busy day is to zone out and watch TV, spend time at a restaurant or engage in a favorite hobby. A study found that the next morning may be grayer than expected when you chose to go to bed later than usual, although you spent that time at rest and relaxation.
The reason for this is that a severe lack of sleep disrupts the functioning of the brain and significantly harms attention, concentration, and memory. Thus, apart from the sense of exhaustion that will accompany you throughout the day, the great effort to maintain normal functioning will only trigger stronger feelings of frustration and anxiety.

4. Keeping pessimistic company

It is very possible that the negative criticism and comments from the circle of people closest to you come from their genuine desire to provide you with good advice. However, as in many other cases, even negative and pessimistic feelings should be taken at the right dosage. According to a clinical psychologist, spending many hours together with a negative person may change our worldview for the worse, make us identify with the negative thoughts of the other person and compare them to many events in our lives.
This doesn’t mean you have to write off people who are close to you, just try to talk to them about the fact that negative conversations don’t benefit you, and perhaps you will make them see the world in a much more positive way.

5. Spending too much time in a busy and overcrowded environment

Life in the center of the city has many advantages such as proximity to many restaurants, public transportation availability, various public facilities, vibrant nightlife, many employment opportunities and more. In a study conducted in 2011, it was found that the rapid and noisy pace of life that characterizes large cities may also create a great deal of mental stress, manifested in symptoms of anxiety and depression. So, despite your great love for these areas, try to spend a little more time in public parks and gardens close to your home where you can connect to nature and enjoy some peace and quiet.

6. Isolating yourself for a long time

After a busy day of chores, it is only natural that we feel the need to isolate ourselves and get the peace and quiet we craved throughout the day. In addition, there are quite a few studies that testify to the many benefits of having a little quality time with ourselves because it allows us to solve problems more efficiently and process the vast amount of information we were exposed to throughout the day.
Nevertheless, it is recommended that this habit not be overdone, and clinical psychologist also warns against the gradual emergence of symptoms of depression and anxiety if one isn’t careful. She says that as part of our coping with the challenges of everyday life, it is important that we strengthen our existing friendships and create new relationships that will enable us to share and express our feelings.

7. Inaction

Although we all like to be idle in front of the TV screen from time to time, we also want to know how to set some boundaries and challenge ourselves in a variety of tasks and hobbies. According to a Dr., doing different tasks, even those that aren’t part of our interests, gives us a sense of meaning, distracts us from negative thoughts and improves our mood significantly. Even having a strict and consistent exercise regimen is an excellent anti-depressant, due to the various chemicals, such as endorphins, released in our brains which promote a sense of calm and tranquility.

8. Not enough daylight exposure

Our busy lives can often have us sitting in front of a screen for hours on end, sometimes without even having a short outdoor break. If you notice that you don’t usually go out during the day, this may explain the gloomy mood that overcomes you out of nowhere. Apart from our natural need to get some fresh air and clear our head, sun exposure accelerates the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain that plays a central role in emotional regulation. In addition, daylight stimulates the production of vitamin D essential to brain health that allows us to stay sharp and logical.

9. Taking various medications

Most of us think that drugs only have physical side effects such as rash, diarrhea, and vomiting. However, you should know that some of the side effects of drugs such as oral contraceptives, anti-epileptic drugs, and corticosteroids may have associated symptoms of depression and anxiety. In a study in 2016, researchers corroborated this hypothesis regarding oral contraceptives and found that any drug with hormonal effects led to extreme mood swings among participants. Therefore, even if you can’t avoid the use of certain medications, you should know the various side effects and when they appear, talk to your doctor about it and see where you go from there.

10. Poor posture

It is no secret that our posture conveys what we feel to the environment, and shows whether we are self-confident, scared, sad and so on. In a study, it was found that our posture has a direct effect on us emotionally; Participants who walked with their backs bent, shoulders slumped forward and a slightly bowed head, made their brains feel depressed and, as a result, began to experience symptoms of depression.

Learn to Be Optimistic Around Negative People

Being optimistic helps in many ways, one of it is having better health, as people worry less. When you've less tension, then better blood circulation leading to better health. Being optimistic is quite easy, just like saying the glass is half full than saying half empty !

1. Choose to Be Optimistic
Life is all about choices. You can opt to spend the entire day reading or cleaning. You can make dinner yourself or choose to go out to eat. You can make that call you've been thinking about for a while or you can put it off for another day.
What's more, you can also choose to be positive or you can choose to simply carry on living as you are. Being optimistic in a negative world starts with the decision to be positive and to carry on that way for the rest of your life.

2. Avoid Energy-Draining Vampires
Some people call them 'toxic' while others call them 'whiners', but we can all recognize a pessimist when we see one, and can recognize their horrible ability to suck all of the positive energy out of a room. This is why it's important to establish healthy boundaries with such people, otherwise, they might end up sucking all of the life out of you.
3. Imagine a Positive Future
It might sound a little pathetic right now, but actually writing down your ideas of an optimistic future will make a huge difference when it comes to your overall outlook on life. You may also want to consider a serious challenge you have in life right now, and simply sit back and think about all of the possible positive outcomes.
4. Bestow Positivity on Others
Making others feel good about themselves can have lasting positive effects on your own life. Never forget to praise your family, friends, and colleagues for the good things which they are doing in their lives, even if they don't directly affect you. Of course, you should never forget to praise yourself either, even for what might seem like the most trivial of things.
5. Recognize Your Negative Thought Patterns
It’s fine to acknowledge that bad things in life might happen at any time. After all, ignoring reality isn’t the most helpful tactic either. Being excessively negative though can seriously sabotage your chances of finding happiness in this life.
When you begin to think in a negative manner, take a moment to work out just how realistic your thoughts really are. Reframing your awkwardly negative thoughts into more realistic patterns may be the key to helping you maintain an optimistic outlook.

6. Practice Gratitude
Spending some time thinking about all of the things you have to be thankful for will often provide you with an instant optimism boost. You could even choose to keep a gratitude journal, where you can jot down anything which makes you smile. If nothing else, take a moment every once in a while to stop, smile and be thankful for the positive things in life.
