5 Bad Drinking Habits to Ditch In Your 50s and Onward

It’s no secret that our nutrition needs change over time. With age, the human body requires more nutrient-dense foods to maintain health, energy levels, and ward off diseases - a topic we cover at length in the article 8 Health-Promoting Foods to Eat After 50. A closely related topic that somehow still flies under the radar is our drinking habits (and we don’t just mean one’s alcohol intake).

Our drinking patterns ought to be reconsidered over time as well. More specifically, it’s crucial to let go of the unhealthy drinking habits we’ve developed over decades - here are 5 of the worst offenders.

1. Stay away from sugary drinks
We can afford to indulge in a can of soda or several cups of fruit juice once in a while when we’re younger, as our bodies have the compensatory mechanisms that protect them from the harmful effects of sugary drinks. This changes with age, which is why people in their 50s and older should stay away from sugary drinks altogether.

Apart from an increased risk of cardiovascular issues and certain cancers, sweetened beverages can affect our cognitive health. A 2018 study found that consuming drinks with refined sugar can contribute to the decline in cognitive function. Therefore, sodas and even fruit juices are not a good fit for older people.

This is not to say, of course, that you should stay away from all flavored drinks - mineral water, herbal teas, and water with slices of fruit and vegetables are all great alternatives to soda. Another drink to consider is milk. Dairy milk, especially reduced-fat varieties, can strengthen your bones because it’s rich in calcium - a mineral many seniors are deficient in. Just 1 glass of milk contains 300 mg of calcium (almost a quarter of your daily requirement), vitamin D, protein, and other nutrients.

2. Avoid drinking too much coffee
There’s plenty of research suggesting that drinking unsweetened coffee is beneficial at any age. Studies point out that moderate intake of coffee can reduce one’s risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, and dementia

However, the keyword here is certainly ‘moderation.’ This is because drinking caffeine in excess - or having MORE than 2-3 cups of coffee a day - can actually hike up your risk of hypertension, heart disease, and sleep problems. It takes around 6-8 hours for caffeine to leave the body, so we recommend sticking to coffee in the first half of the day and then switching to non-caffeinated beverages in the evening in order to make sure that you’ll be getting plenty of sleep.

3. Avoid drinking before bedtime
Try not to drink too much right before you hit the hay. Of course, you’re surely aware that drinking caffeinated or alcoholic beverages before sleep can disrupt your sleep, but in reality, even drinking a simple glass of water before bed may not be a great idea for older people.

The thing is, drinking too many liquids before bed increase the likelihood of you having to run to the bathroom in the middle of the night and disrupt your sleep. This risk is even higher in men, whose prostates grow bigger in size with age, which puts extra pressure on the bladder. Having a few sips of water to take your medications is fine, but try not to drink more than is necessary before bed and get the bulk of your hydration during the day.

4. Remember that you have higher hydration needs
Did you know that one in three seniors is dehydrated? And that’s the most conservative estimate.
But you should know that not drinking enough can lead to brain fog, fatigue, dizziness and increases your risk of stroke.

Getting enough hydration, on the other hand, is associated with improved immune health and more energy - so it is clearly the better choice.

One of the biggest reasons why so many older adults are dehydrated is because they’re simply unaware that they should drink more. The latest guidelines suggest that women over age 50 should drink at least 8 glasses of liquids and men should get at least 10 glasses every day. Remember to drink up, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Symptoms of dehydration to look out for are dry lips and skin, dark or infrequent urination, cramps in the limbs, and fatigue.

5. Avoid drinking alcohol daily
The truth is, no one should drink alcohol daily, but older people are more susceptible to the harmful effects of alcohol than the rest of the population. When your metabolism slows down with age, alcohol stays in the body for a longer time - which makes you more susceptible to its harmful effects.

Note that alcoholic beverages can interfere with the effectiveness of medications, harm your liver, diabetes, and cause cancer. They also make conditions like high blood pressure and ulcers worse and can make you gain weight too because many alcoholic drinks are loaded with sugar. Therefore, drinking alcohol is one of the worst things by far you can consume, especially when you’re older and may already have underlying health issues.

How to manage weight with type 2 diabetes

The first thing that comes to your mind when you’re living with diabetes would probably be ‘food’. But, it’s important to know the fact that the beverages you drink can have an effect on your blood glucose, and of course, your weight and health.

Choosing the right drinks can help manage your symptoms, maintain a healthy weight, and avoid various unpleasant side effects. Major international health organisations, recommend zero-calorie or low-calorie drinks for diabetics. Water is simply the best bet especially for people with diabetes to stay hydrated, mainly because it won’t cause a spike in blood sugar levels.

Tired of drinking water?

Drinking enough water can help you stay hydrated, eliminate excess glucose through urine. But if you’re bored of drinking plain water, there are many things you can do to improve the flavour. For instance,  try adding sliced fresh fruits such as lemon, lime, or orange to plain water. You can also add sprigs of flavourful herbs (mint, or basil) to your water to make herbal tea.

Hot or cold - black, green, and herbal teas have been shown to have immense health benefits. Often considered as a miracle beverage, green tea can have various beneficial effects on your general health. Research suggests that it can help lower bad (LDL) cholesterol levels, reduce blood pressure, increase fat burning aiding in weight loss. Studies have shown that green tea can lower the risk of type 2 diabetes as it can improve insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar levels.

Apart from this, unsweetened coffee, sugar-free fruit juice, fat-free or low-fat milk are good for people with diabetes.

What to avoid

You should avoid sugary drinks as much as possible - such as regular soda, energy drinks, diet soda, sweetened fruit juices, alcoholic beverages, etc. These can raise blood glucose as well as provide several hundred calories in just one serving.

If you have diabetes, you should check with their doctor to determine if alcoholic drinks are safe for you to consume. This is important because drinking alcohol can cause blood sugar levels to fluctuate, and may even worsen the complications of diabetes.

The bottom line is it is always best to keep it simple when it comes to choosing a drink - try opting for water whenever possible!

Modifications in Lifestyle To Help Diabetics

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that results in high blood sugar levels in the body. It basically means that the body is either insensitive to insulin or the insulin production levels in the body has gone down. The various symptoms of diabetes are blurred vision, weight loss, hunger, etc.
Some other symptoms of diabetes are
1. Excessive urine output
2. Wounds that take time to heal
3. Yeast infections
4. You may experience fatigue on a regular basis
5. Frequent mood swings
Diabetes is also known as a lifestyle disease. From the food you eat to the amount of activity, they are all connected to diabetes prevention. The various modifications that you may carry out to prevent diabetes are:
1. Exercise
You should exercise on a regular basis as it increases your overall well-being. It helps you to lose weight and allows you to maintain optimal blood sugar levels. It can also improve your body's sensitivity to insulin to prevent blood sugar problems. Exercise helps in increasing endorphin levels in the body which are responsible for keeping you happy & satiated, thereby avoiding depression and over eating.

2. Eat more whole grains
Unlike simple carbohydrates, whole grains are complex carbohydrates that raise your blood sugar steadily instead of spiking it suddenly. Avoid refined grains as most of the important nutrients are stripped from refined grains. A well-balanced diet with adequate amounts of PUFA/MUFA help in increasing the insulin sensitivity, reducing cholesterol and heart problems, etc.

3. Eat a lot of fiber
If you have type 2 diabetes, you should be including high-fiber foods in your diet is a healthy way to control high blood sugar. Fiber does not raise blood glucose levels. Because it is not broken down by the body, the fiber in an apple or a slice of whole grain bread has no effect on blood glucose levels because it isn't digested. The grams of fiber can actually be subtracted from the total grams of carbohydrates you are eating if you are using carbohydrate counting for meal planning. Fiber helps you in feeling satiated, thus prevents you from overeating. It also improves your blood sugar levels and decreases your chances of getting affected by heart disease.

4. Lose weight
You should aim to maintain a healthy weight level as it also decreases the risk of diabetes. It also helps in improving your cardiovascular health. Follow a regimen, which is based on a balanced diet and moderate amount of exercise. Losing weight is the best way to keep diabetes away. Weight is something that we can keep under control. The waist size of men and women should not be more than 150 cm and 90 cm respectively. Always maintain your ideal body weight as per your BMI (Body Mass Index). Globally, obesity is one of the leading causes of diabetes.

5. Avoid sugary drinks
With ten teaspoons of sugar in every 12-ounce can or bottle, sweet drinks can send your blood sugar soaring and boost your risk for weight gain, high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease. One sugary drink a day adds 150 empty calories and 40 to 50 grams of blood-sugar-raising carbohydrates to your diet, and can lead to a weight gain of 15 pounds per year. Switching to healthier drinks can save hundreds of calories and a lot of carbohydrates.

6. Avoid Stress
When you are stressed, your blood sugar levels rise. Stress hormones like epinephrine and cortisol kick in since one of their major functions is to raise blood sugar to help boost energy when it's needed most. You can't fight danger when your blood sugar is low, so it rises to help meet the challenge. Both physical and emotional stress can prompt an increase in these hormones, resulting in an increase in blood sugars and diabetes. Ensuring a stress-free life is very important if you want to stay away from diabetes. Avoid stress by going out for walks in open areas- where there is plenty of greenery, indulging in social causes/activities, yoga, meditation, engaged in some hobby etc.

One can even try alternative healing- holistic therapies, which calms both the body and the mind. Meditation, deep breathing exercises are other ways to relax our minds. Listening to music, or even singing or playing any instrument helps one to relax.

Diabetics should eat high fibre diet and smaller meals of 5-6 spread through the day, as this will not only prevent your hunger, but also makes sure that there is no spike in your sugar level.

Weight loss linked to healthy eating not genetics

The amount and quality of food and not a persons genetics will lead to weight loss, a study has found.

It has been suggested that variations in genetic makeup make it easier for some people to lose weight than others on certain diets.

To test this theory researchers at Stanford University conducted a randomised control trial involving 609 overweight adults, who all underwent genetic and insulin testing before being randomly assigned to either a low-fat or low-carb diet for 12 months.

Gene analyses identified variations linked with how the body processes fats or carbohydrates. But weight loss averaged around 5kg to 6kg at follow-up regardless of genes, insulin levels or diet type.

What seemed to make a difference was healthy eating, researchers said.

Participants who ate the most vegetables and consumed the fewest processed foods, sugary drinks and unhealthy fats lost the most weight.

Participants had 22 health education classes during the study and were encouraged to be physically active but the focus was on what they ate.

They were advised to choose high-quality foods but were not given suggested calorie limits nor were they provided with specific foods. Results are based on what they reported eating.

Fat intake in the low-fat group averaged 57 grams during the study versus 87 grams beforehand, while carb intake in the low-carb group averaged 132 grams versus 247 grams previously.

Both groups reduced their daily calorie intake by an average of about 500 calories.
