Genetic alteration increases risk of autism, impairs brain communication: Know all about this condition

A new study at the Lancaster University in Britain says that a genetic alteration that increases the risk of developing Autism impairs brain communication. Researchers say that people with a genetic deletion known as chromosome 2p16.3 deletion often experience developmental delay and have learning difficulties. They are also around 15 times more likely to develop Autism and 20 times more likely to develop Tourette’s Syndrome. But researchers say that they don’t understand the mechanisms involved completely. According to them, this genetic deletion disrupts a brain area known as the Thalamus, compromising its ability to communicate with other brain areas. Researchers also saw changes in brain regions that are responsible for processing sensory information and in learning and memory. The journal Cerebral Cortex published this study.

It can be difficult to detect autism in children as its symptoms can be similar to other mental or behavioural disorders. Spotting the early signs is essential for parents, so that therapy can start immediately. As you know your child better than your pediatrician, do not disregard your own experience and observation as your doctor might not be able to gauge everything in a 15-minute visit. Let us take a look at some early signs that point to this condition.

Social Limitations

Infants usually respond to voice, grasp a finger, gaze at faces and smile by four to six months of age. Children with autism find it difficult to have day-to-day human interactions. For autistic toddlers, it’s tough to play social games. They are loners and do not respond to their parent’s reactions of anger or affection.

Communication Difficulties
Most toddlers start babbling, point to objects they want, respond to voices and make faces when they are displeased, by their first birthday. Autistic children struggle in learning and combining words. They may utter a single word or phrase repeatedly or repeat what they hear (echolalia). They fail to express themselves through facial gestures and body movements. Some would speak with a deep voice or sing a high-pitched song suddenly.

Repetitiveness

Autistic children love to follow a routine which may include arranging and rearranging objects, rocking back and forth, hand-flapping and repeating words, phrases or sounds. Self-stimulating repetitive behavior such as wiggling fingers in front of their eyes is another symptom. A slight disturbance in their daily routine leads to sudden outbursts and inappropriate behavior.

Dealing With Autism

When you notice these signs in your child, consult a doctor. While it might be earth-shattering for you, don’t panic and lose hope. Don’t forget that your child looks up to you for help and it is your unconditional love that will help him the most. Here’s what you can do when you learn that your child has autism.

Learn About Autism
The more you know about the condition, the better equipped you are at making informed decisions. Learn about treatment options, ask questions and inquire about new therapies.

Understand Your Child Better

Understand what makes your child stressful and uncomfortable and what calms him down.

Accept Your Child

Do not focus on how your kid is different from other children. Celebrate small successes and enjoy his quirks.

Don’t Give Up

You cannot predict the course that autism might take. Don’t give up and worry about what life has in store for your child. Some of the greatest minds in history have had autism.

Treating The Condition

Early intervention can help children from birth to three years of age learn important skills. Treatment can be broken down into four categories.

Diet Management: Many biomedical interventions require a diet change and removal (or inclusion) of certain foods from a child’s diet. Mineral or vitamin supplements are important. Consult a doctor to ensure that your child is getting important vitamins and minerals.

Medication: Certain medicines help children deal with autism and assist in managing high energy levels, improve focus and provide relief from depression.

Communication & Behavioural Approaches: Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a therapy where lessons are broken down into simple parts for children and positive reinforcement is used to reward correct answers and behaviours. Treatment & Education Of Autistic & Related Communication-Handicapped Children (TEACCH) is a system that uses visual cues to teach skills. Picture cards are used to show a child how to get dressed by breaking down information to small steps.

Occupational Therapy helps kids live independently by focusing on their eating, bathing, dressing and other habits.    Speech Therapy enhances their verbal communication skills and in Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), children are taught to use picture symbols to ask, answer questions and communicate in this therapy. Sensory Integration Therapy is beneficial in children who are disturbed by certain sounds, smell or do not like being touched.

Complementary & Alternative Treatments
Some parents and healthcare professionals suggest the use of chelation therapy (removal of heavy metals like lead from the body), special diets, biologicals (such as the usage of the hormone secretin) or body-based systems (such as deep pressure) and other alternative treatments. Consult your doctor before starting any such treatment.

Eating this healthy snack can treat depression, says study

This is really effective!

Depression is certainly a critical mental condition that requires medication and constant counselling. But there is enough evidence available to prove that certain food items also have a positive impact on the mind and can help uplift your mood.

Researchers have recently unlocked the perfect breakfast treat that can help beat depression and that is YOGURT!

We all know that yogurt is a healthy food that prevents you from getting indulged in unhealthy and junk foods. It is packed with different kinds of nutrients and now we have got another reason to eat this probiotic for breakfast. A study published in the journal Scientific Reports suggests that this probiotic may also help combat depression.

The study was carried out by a team of researchers from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Study author Assistant Professor Alban Gaultier said that the treatments available for relieving the symptoms of depression are not very good as they come with numerous side effects. So, it is important to have another effective alternative treatment.

For the study, the researchers exposed mice to higher levels of stress until they began to show symptoms of depression. Then they did a before and after comparison of the levels of gut bacteria. They found a clear connection between the level of gut bacteria and mental health.

It was revealed that the level of Lactobacillus (friendly gut bacteria) in the gut influences the level of a blood metabolite called kynurenine, which is linked with the development of depression. When Lactobacillus supplement was added in their diet, they recovered instantly.

Lactobacillus help to balance the levels of kynurenine in the blood. When the level of Lactobacillus decreases in the gut, you begin to see the symptoms of depression.

The bottom line

The research is still at an early stage and more detailed study is required in this direction. Also, it has only been tested on mice and we can only observe the symptoms of depression as they cannot reveal how they are feeling. Till that time you can have yogurt to improve your mood. Yogurt is also effective in losing weight and treating other seasonal allergies.

Modifications in Lifestyle To Help Diabetics

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that results in high blood sugar levels in the body. It basically means that the body is either insensitive to insulin or the insulin production levels in the body has gone down. The various symptoms of diabetes are blurred vision, weight loss, hunger, etc.
Some other symptoms of diabetes are
1. Excessive urine output
2. Wounds that take time to heal
3. Yeast infections
4. You may experience fatigue on a regular basis
5. Frequent mood swings
Diabetes is also known as a lifestyle disease. From the food you eat to the amount of activity, they are all connected to diabetes prevention. The various modifications that you may carry out to prevent diabetes are:
1. Exercise
You should exercise on a regular basis as it increases your overall well-being. It helps you to lose weight and allows you to maintain optimal blood sugar levels. It can also improve your body's sensitivity to insulin to prevent blood sugar problems. Exercise helps in increasing endorphin levels in the body which are responsible for keeping you happy & satiated, thereby avoiding depression and over eating.

2. Eat more whole grains
Unlike simple carbohydrates, whole grains are complex carbohydrates that raise your blood sugar steadily instead of spiking it suddenly. Avoid refined grains as most of the important nutrients are stripped from refined grains. A well-balanced diet with adequate amounts of PUFA/MUFA help in increasing the insulin sensitivity, reducing cholesterol and heart problems, etc.

3. Eat a lot of fiber
If you have type 2 diabetes, you should be including high-fiber foods in your diet is a healthy way to control high blood sugar. Fiber does not raise blood glucose levels. Because it is not broken down by the body, the fiber in an apple or a slice of whole grain bread has no effect on blood glucose levels because it isn't digested. The grams of fiber can actually be subtracted from the total grams of carbohydrates you are eating if you are using carbohydrate counting for meal planning. Fiber helps you in feeling satiated, thus prevents you from overeating. It also improves your blood sugar levels and decreases your chances of getting affected by heart disease.

4. Lose weight
You should aim to maintain a healthy weight level as it also decreases the risk of diabetes. It also helps in improving your cardiovascular health. Follow a regimen, which is based on a balanced diet and moderate amount of exercise. Losing weight is the best way to keep diabetes away. Weight is something that we can keep under control. The waist size of men and women should not be more than 150 cm and 90 cm respectively. Always maintain your ideal body weight as per your BMI (Body Mass Index). Globally, obesity is one of the leading causes of diabetes.

5. Avoid sugary drinks
With ten teaspoons of sugar in every 12-ounce can or bottle, sweet drinks can send your blood sugar soaring and boost your risk for weight gain, high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease. One sugary drink a day adds 150 empty calories and 40 to 50 grams of blood-sugar-raising carbohydrates to your diet, and can lead to a weight gain of 15 pounds per year. Switching to healthier drinks can save hundreds of calories and a lot of carbohydrates.

6. Avoid Stress
When you are stressed, your blood sugar levels rise. Stress hormones like epinephrine and cortisol kick in since one of their major functions is to raise blood sugar to help boost energy when it's needed most. You can't fight danger when your blood sugar is low, so it rises to help meet the challenge. Both physical and emotional stress can prompt an increase in these hormones, resulting in an increase in blood sugars and diabetes. Ensuring a stress-free life is very important if you want to stay away from diabetes. Avoid stress by going out for walks in open areas- where there is plenty of greenery, indulging in social causes/activities, yoga, meditation, engaged in some hobby etc.

One can even try alternative healing- holistic therapies, which calms both the body and the mind. Meditation, deep breathing exercises are other ways to relax our minds. Listening to music, or even singing or playing any instrument helps one to relax.

Diabetics should eat high fibre diet and smaller meals of 5-6 spread through the day, as this will not only prevent your hunger, but also makes sure that there is no spike in your sugar level.

Non-Invasive Energy Medicine Is An Alternative Method Of Treating Cancer

Here is an alternative method od even treating deadly diseases like cancer and several sclerosis — non-invasive energy medicine which does not interfere with conventional treatments at all, according to one of its leading international exponents.

In collaboration with conventional methods, non-invasive energy medicine could be a future medicine. While another expert added that it was just a matter of time before it holds the firm as a household name in many countries.

A lady who for around four decades has been teaching people about the body’s energy systems in order to reclaim their natural vitality and health, told in an interview, “Energy medicine is an approach to healing that treats the electromagnetic and subtle energy patterns of the body to activate healing for both physical and emotional distress. It is gentle, non-invasive, and does not interfere with conventional treatments in any way.”

She is going to attend the three-day Quantum Energy Conclave2 (QEC2) as one of the lead speakers.
She explained, “This extends from treating cancer or multiple sclerosis to losing weight to increasing your vitality to improving your performance at something that really matters to you. And in the process, you become more consciously, intimately, and joyfully involved in the deepest workings of your physical body, a journey that extends down to your soul.”

She said that every conceivable health condition, dysfunctional habit or psychological challenge can be improved and if not, shifting the invisible energies in the body could help to overcome and maintain that condition.

She has defined energy medicine as, “Energy is your body’s magic! It is your life force. You keep it healthy and it keeps you healthy. If you are sick or sad, shifting your energies feels good. When you care for these invisible energies, it makes your heart sing and your cells happy!”

She pointed out that energy medicine is also called complimentary healing, she noted that our natural capacity to overcome and heal ourselves is commendable. This is a well-known theory and these invisible energies can be measured and detected by scientific instruments.

She went on to say, “But it is not just wounds. This activation of energy occurs at every level of the body — healing wounds, yes, but also healing all forms of illness and keeping us healthy. Energies surround and support every organ — the heart, the liver, the pancreas; and all the other systems — cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, reproductive.”

She said, “These energies help the organ or system to heal when illness or disease sets in. In energy medicine, energy is the medicine, and energy is also the patient. Energy heals the body by activating the body’s own natural healing resources. And the body’s energies are healed by restoring energies that have become weak, disturbed, or out of balance.”

The curator of QEC2 explained it as “India’s only conference where the greatest global minds in energy medicine will share the latest, unbelievable developments in the cutting-edge world of quantum energy medicine.” she added, “I truly believe that the speakers we have invited to the conclave are the real heroes of the energy future of the world. They are the ‘soldiers’ who are striving and innovating to make science and magic meet.”

When asked about whether she believes people in India are adopting energy medicine. She asserted, “Absolutely. Energy medicine has taken Europe by storm and it is just a matter of time before it becomes a household name in India. And, why not! Who would not want tools that  one can dramatically reverse adverse situations in their life — be it health-related or otherwise? The future of energy medicine is here.”

Acupressure points are a great alternative treatment for various ailments and symptoms, with cold and flu symptoms being no exception. We usually catch the flu when our immune system is compromised and cannot protect us from it efficiently. In addition there are environmental causes, in particular cold and dry weather.
While acupressure cannot heal the flu itself, it will help you deal with most of the unpleasant aspects of it, such as nasal irritation and sneezing, sore throat, congestion, headaches, general weakness, and coughing. It’s important to remember that acupressure cannot replace medical care, but serves to complement it, in order to speed up the healing process. Some of these  can be performed on a daily basis to strengthen the immune system and prevent catching that cold in the first place.

Drilling Bamboo
Acupressure

The “Drilling Bamboo” pressure point is one of the most effective when it comes to dealing with a cold or the flu. It is located in the eye socket, at the spot where the eyebrows meet the bridge of the nose. Apply pressure to both sides for a few minutes to relieve cold symptoms, fever, sinus congestion, and headaches that manifest in the front of the head. In addition, this point can help with eye-strain related pains and tiredness.

2. Facial Beauty
Acupressure

If your nose is congested, the “Facial Beauty” acupressure point is the most effective method to decongest it. The points are located at the bottom of the cheekbones, in parallel to the pupils. Apply medium pressure to both cheeks to relieve congestion and related headaches. This point will also help in relieving a burning sensation in the eyes, and “heavy” eyelids.

3. Lower Intestine 4
Acupressure

When it comes to flu symptoms, the “Lower Intestine 4” point is your best friend. Located on the back of the hand, between the thumb and the forefinger, it requires mild pressure to be applied by using your other thumb and forefinger. This treatment will also help in cases of constipation. However, pregnant women should avoid this pressure point.

4. Lower Intestine 11
Acupressure

“Lower Intestine 11” is also effective in treating both flu and cold symptoms. This pressure point is located near the elbow, on the outer side of joint. When you’re feeling ill, apply pressure to this spot using your thumb. Repeat daily for maximum results. This point also provides a boost for the immune system, and it is recommended that you activate it even if you’re not sick, as a preventative measure.

5. Lower Intestine 20
Acupressure

A common pressure point in alternative medicine, “Lower Intestine 20” is located directly by the outer edges of the nostrils. To activate it, apply pressure on both sides of the nose simultaneously, and then massage the area for a couple of minutes. This pressure points is great for treating various nasal obstructions, facial inflammations, and sinus congestion.

6. Bearing Support
Acupressure

Another effective pressure point for dealing with cold and flu symptoms is the “Bearing Support”. It is located in the upper back, between the shoulder blades and the spine, so you may need the help of another person to activate this spot. Alternatively, you can try lying down on two tennis balls, and use them to massage the area. Apply pressure to the bearing support every day, even if you’re not sick, to boost your immune system and strengthen your body’s ability to resist cold symptoms.

7. Elegant Mansion
Acupressure
When it comes to respiratory issues, your best bet is the “Elegant Mansion” pressure point. Located in the hollow between the collarbones and the breastbone, and is activated by applying light pressure to  both sides simultaneously. The elegant Mansion will relieve respiratory issues, coughing, sore throat, and the sensation of pressure in the chest.

8. Third Eye
Acupressure

The “Third Eye” is a very common treatment spot for various ailments in Chinese acupuncture. The pressure point is located on the forehead, right between the eyebrows. Use your thumb to apply medium pressure to lower a fever, clear up a congested nose, and relieve congestion-related headaches.

Other than all these, what I've found quite effective to prevent cold and flu symptoms is peeling an onion, cutting into 1/2 a small onion in a small open dish in the bed room, where we normally spend most of our time, especially when feeling low, as I found it prevents from a cold/ flu attack. Keep the onion for 3-4 days, then you'll see that it has turned black, don't touch it, throw it away, as it contains the germs.
