High Protein Content in Fibre-Rich Diet May Cause Bloating

High-fibre diets are said to cause a little bloating by stimulating some fibre-digesting gut bacteria species, which produce gas as a by-product. Fibre is an important nutrient that should be consumed regularly, but its excessive consumption may not be good for you if you are watching your waistline. And, if your high-fibre diet is coupled with protein-rich diet, it may further lead to even more bloating. However, if high-fibre diet is paired with carb-rich diet, it may not escalate the problem that much. The study was conducted by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

The findings of the study that were published in the journal Clinical and Translational Gastroenterology, also suggest a role for "macronutrients" such as carbs and proteins in modifying the gut bacteria population - the microbiome.

For the study, the researchers examined a dietary clinical trial that was conducted in the years between 2003 and 2005 in Boston. It involved 164 participants who had high blood pressure. They were fed three different diets over a time period of consecutive six weeks with a two-week break in between when the participants had their regular diet.

The participants, who ate versions of a heart-healthy, high-fibre diet that was relatively rich in plant protein, were about 40 percent more likely to develop bloating symptoms as compared to a carbohydrate-rich version of the same high fibre diet.

Study co-senior author Noel Mueller, PhD, an assistant professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the Bloomberg School said, "It's possible that in this study, the protein-rich version of the diet caused more bloating because it caused more of a healthy shift in the composition of the microbiome. Notably, the protein in these diets was mostly from vegetable sources such as beans, legumes, and nuts."

The study further suggests that if high quality carb calories like whole grain are substituted with protein calories, the chances of bloating may be reduced for those on high fibre diets, making such diets more tolerable.

High-fibre diet cuts preeclampsia risk during pregnancy

Ladies, please take note. Consuming a high fibre-diet may reduce the risk of preeclampsia during pregnancy, researchers have found.

Simple recommendation to eat food, mostly plants and not too much, might be the most effective primary prevention strategy for some of the most serious conditions of our time.

The mother's gut bacteria and diet appear to be crucial to promoting healthy pregnancy, said the lead author of the study.

The study showed that pregnancy outcomes and infant immunity are linked to gut bacteria.

Plant-based fibre is broken down in the gut by bacteria into factors that influence the immune system. The research team investigated the role of these metabolic products of gut bacteria during pregnancy.

The researchers found that in humans, reduced levels of acetate, which is mainly produced by fibre fermentation in the gut, is associated with the common and serious pregnancy-related condition, preeclampsia.

Preecelampsia occurs in up to 10% of pregnancies and is characterised by high blood pressure, protein in the urine and severe swelling in the mother's body.

It also interferes with the child's immune development whilst in the womb, with some evidence suggesting a link to higher rates of allergies and autoimmune diseases later in life.

The study found that preeclampsia affected the development of an important fetal immune organ-the thymus- which sits just behind the breastbone.

Foetuses in preeclampsia pregnancies were found to have a much smaller thymus than children from healthy pregnancies.

The cells the thymus normally generates-called T cells, and specifically those associated with the prevention of allergies and autoimmune conditions such as diabetes- also remained lower in infants after preeclampsia, even 4 years after delivery.

The mechanism of acetate on the developing foetal immune system were further examined in separate experiments involving mice that showed acetate was central in driving foetal thymus and T cell development.

The results showed that promoting specific metabolic products of gut bacteria during pregnancy might be an effective way to maintain a healthy pregnancy and to prevent allergies and autoimmune conditions later in life.

High intake of salt makes you prone to gastrointestinal bloating

If you consume diet high in salt, it may make you vulnerable to gastrointestinal bloating, a study has revealed.

The findings came to fore after researchers in the US re-analysed data from a large clinical trial conducted two decades ago.

They found that high consumption of sodium increased bloating among trial participants.

“Bloating is one of the leading gastrointestinal complaints in the US and can be exacerbated in some people by a high-fiber diet. Our results suggest that they might be able to reduce that bloating, without compromising on healthy fiber, by lowering their sodium intake,” said the senior author of the study.

Bloating features a buildup of excess gas in the gut. The production of gas can be attributed to gas-producing gut bacteria breaking down fiber. There is also some evidence that sodium can stimulate bloating.

The study is the first to examine sodium as a cause of bloating in the context of low- and high-fiber diets.

The study analysed data from the DASH-Sodium trial, conducted at four clinical centres during 1998-99. It tested the DASH diet, a high-fiber diet which is relatively low in fat and high in fruits, nuts, and vegetables, against a low-fiber control diet.

Each of the two diets was tested at three levels of sodium, and the 412 participants all had high blood pressure at the trial start.

5 science-backed tips to improve your gut health

Numerous gut bacteria live inside your body that plays a pivotal role in ensuring your overall well-being. A couple of years after birth, gut bacteria starts to develop inside your body. Some of these bacteria are healthy for your body while others can cause damage. The common function of these bacteria is helping you digest food, battle diabetes and obesity. This is because your gut bacteria affect your body’s metabolism and excess gut bacteria inside your body can lead to the build-up of fat around your liver. When your liver gets surrounded with fat it paves the way for cardiovascular ailments, type 2 diabetes and obesity. To ensure a healthy gut, eating probiotic foods can be a good option. According to a study, people living with anxiety symptoms can get relief by opting for probiotic foods. Here, we tell you some of the science-backed tips that can help you manage your gut health.

1) Avoid artificial sweeteners: Artificial sweeteners are widely used alternate for sugar. In a study, it was found that artificial sweeteners lead to changes in the microbiota and surged the blood sugar levels of the participants.

2) Opt for fermented foods:The process of preparing a fermented food include the involvement of bacteria or yeast that converts the sugar in foods to organic acids or alcohol. These foods are known to be rich in lactobacilli, a type of bacteria that can work wonders for our gut health. The common fermented food that you can include in your dietary is yogurt.

3) Eat high-fibre foods: High-fibre foods are difficult to digest, but certain bacteria in your gut can easily break down these foods that stimulates their growth. The prominent source of high-fibre food is whole grain.

4) Drink green tea: Green tea is rich in polyphenol content which is a plant compound that curbs your blood pressure, inflammation and cholesterol levels.

5) Following plant-based diet:Plant-based diet are good for your overall well-being, you can also improve your gut health by regularly eating plant-based foods. In a study, it was found that a vegetarian diet helped in reducing disease-causing bacteria in those who were overweight.

5 super healthy high-fibre foods that burn belly fat and slim down your waistline fast

A study commissioned by the World Health Organisation (WHO) suggests that eating a diet high in fibre and whole grains could help reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. High-fibre foods are filling, increasing your feeling of fullness after a meal without raising your blood sugar or adding calories. Perhaps, they are among the most powerful foods when it comes to weight loss.

As per the study, total deaths and incidences of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and colorectal cancer fell by 5 to 27 per cent for every 8 gram increase in dietary fibre eaten a day. Protection against stroke and breast cancer also increased. The study found that consuming 25g to 29g of dietary fibre each day was adequate to reap the benefits but higher intakes of the nutrient could provide even greater health protection. However, the research also found that most people worldwide do not eat enough dietary fibre, consuming less than 20g of fibre a day.

“Our findings provide convincing evidence for nutrition guidelines to focus on increasing dietary fibre and on replacing refined grains with whole grains. This reduces incidence risk and mortality from a broad range of important diseases,” said a professor.

High-fibre foods you should eat to lose weight or improve health

Here are five high-fibre foods that can help you trim belly fat and reduce your risk of certain health problems.
Spinach
Low in calories and high in nutrients and antioxidants, spinach is an excellent source of dietary fibre. Spinach is an extremely nutrient-rich vegetable that provides a plethora of health benefits, ranging from weight loss to protecting you from diabetes and other chronic conditions.

Bananas
Bananas contain powerful antioxidants and ample amounts of nutrients, including fibre. Studies have shown that eating fibre-rich bananas can help you lose weight and benefit your health in various forms. The fruit is packed full of energy-giving carbohydrate and heart-healthy potassium.

 Beans
Not only they are packed with fibre, beans are also high in protein and other essential nutrients. They are also rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, reducing the risk of cancer. Being high in fibre and healthy starches, beans can help prevent food cravings and avoid overeating, aiding in weight loss.

Carrots
Not only the root vegetable is delicious, but carrot also contains large amounts of vitamin K, vitamin B6, magnesium and beta-carotene, an antioxidant that is responsible for healthy skin, good eye health and vision. Carrots are low in calories but full of nutrients that can help you lose weight.

Artichoke
It is claimed that the fibre content in artichoke can improve digestion and aid weight loss. Artichokes are low in fat but high in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc, potassium, manganese, and phosphorus.

High-fibre diet lowers risk of death, non-communicable diseases

Eating up to 30 grams of naturally-occurring dietary fibre -- such as whole grains, pulses, vegetables and fruits -- daily may prevent the risks of developing non-communicable diseases, finds a review of studies published.

The results suggest a 15-30 per cent decrease in all-cause and cardiovascular related mortality; and reduced incidence of coronary heart disease, stroke, Type-2 diabetes and colorectal cancer by 16-24 per cent.

Increasing fibre intake is associated with lower body-weight and cholesterol, compared with lower intake or synthetic and extracted fibre.

"Our findings provide convincing evidence for nutrition guidelines to focus on increasing dietary fibre and on replacing refined grains with whole grains. This reduces incidence risk and mortality from a broad range of important diseases," said a Prof.

"Fibre-rich whole foods that require chewing and retain much of their structure in the gut increase satiety and help weight control and can favourably influence lipid and glucose levels.

"The breakdown of fibre in the large bowel by the resident bacteria has additional wide-ranging effects including protection from colorectal cancer," the Prof. said.

Protection against stroke, and breast cancer also increased. Consuming 25-29 grams each day was adequate but the data suggest that higher intakes of dietary fibre could provide even greater protection.

The researchers included 185 observational studies and 58 clinical trials involving 4,635 adult participants.

The study also found that diets with a low glycaemic index and low glycaemic load provided limited support for protection against Type 2 diabetes and stroke only. Foods with a low glycaemic index or low glycaemic load may also contain added sugars, saturated fats, and sodium.

However, high intakes might have ill-effects for people with low iron or mineral levels for whom high levels of whole grains can further reduce iron levels, the researchers noted.

Modifications in Lifestyle To Help Diabetics

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that results in high blood sugar levels in the body. It basically means that the body is either insensitive to insulin or the insulin production levels in the body has gone down. The various symptoms of diabetes are blurred vision, weight loss, hunger, etc.
Some other symptoms of diabetes are
1. Excessive urine output
2. Wounds that take time to heal
3. Yeast infections
4. You may experience fatigue on a regular basis
5. Frequent mood swings
Diabetes is also known as a lifestyle disease. From the food you eat to the amount of activity, they are all connected to diabetes prevention. The various modifications that you may carry out to prevent diabetes are:
1. Exercise
You should exercise on a regular basis as it increases your overall well-being. It helps you to lose weight and allows you to maintain optimal blood sugar levels. It can also improve your body's sensitivity to insulin to prevent blood sugar problems. Exercise helps in increasing endorphin levels in the body which are responsible for keeping you happy & satiated, thereby avoiding depression and over eating.

2. Eat more whole grains
Unlike simple carbohydrates, whole grains are complex carbohydrates that raise your blood sugar steadily instead of spiking it suddenly. Avoid refined grains as most of the important nutrients are stripped from refined grains. A well-balanced diet with adequate amounts of PUFA/MUFA help in increasing the insulin sensitivity, reducing cholesterol and heart problems, etc.

3. Eat a lot of fiber
If you have type 2 diabetes, you should be including high-fiber foods in your diet is a healthy way to control high blood sugar. Fiber does not raise blood glucose levels. Because it is not broken down by the body, the fiber in an apple or a slice of whole grain bread has no effect on blood glucose levels because it isn't digested. The grams of fiber can actually be subtracted from the total grams of carbohydrates you are eating if you are using carbohydrate counting for meal planning. Fiber helps you in feeling satiated, thus prevents you from overeating. It also improves your blood sugar levels and decreases your chances of getting affected by heart disease.

4. Lose weight
You should aim to maintain a healthy weight level as it also decreases the risk of diabetes. It also helps in improving your cardiovascular health. Follow a regimen, which is based on a balanced diet and moderate amount of exercise. Losing weight is the best way to keep diabetes away. Weight is something that we can keep under control. The waist size of men and women should not be more than 150 cm and 90 cm respectively. Always maintain your ideal body weight as per your BMI (Body Mass Index). Globally, obesity is one of the leading causes of diabetes.

5. Avoid sugary drinks
With ten teaspoons of sugar in every 12-ounce can or bottle, sweet drinks can send your blood sugar soaring and boost your risk for weight gain, high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease. One sugary drink a day adds 150 empty calories and 40 to 50 grams of blood-sugar-raising carbohydrates to your diet, and can lead to a weight gain of 15 pounds per year. Switching to healthier drinks can save hundreds of calories and a lot of carbohydrates.

6. Avoid Stress
When you are stressed, your blood sugar levels rise. Stress hormones like epinephrine and cortisol kick in since one of their major functions is to raise blood sugar to help boost energy when it's needed most. You can't fight danger when your blood sugar is low, so it rises to help meet the challenge. Both physical and emotional stress can prompt an increase in these hormones, resulting in an increase in blood sugars and diabetes. Ensuring a stress-free life is very important if you want to stay away from diabetes. Avoid stress by going out for walks in open areas- where there is plenty of greenery, indulging in social causes/activities, yoga, meditation, engaged in some hobby etc.

One can even try alternative healing- holistic therapies, which calms both the body and the mind. Meditation, deep breathing exercises are other ways to relax our minds. Listening to music, or even singing or playing any instrument helps one to relax.

Diabetics should eat high fibre diet and smaller meals of 5-6 spread through the day, as this will not only prevent your hunger, but also makes sure that there is no spike in your sugar level.
