5 reasons your eyes look tired even after getting a good night's sleep

These might be the reasons
There are times when even after getting a sound sleep for 8 to 9 hours, your eyes look puffy and tired the next day. The most frustrating part is when others point it out.

Dark circles and droopy eyelids are common when you are stressed or did not get a restful night’s sleep. But all the confusion begins when it happens on any random day. Unfortunately, sleeplessness is not the reason why your eyes look tired and puffy in the morning. Here are 5 other reasons your eyes might look tired.

Allergies
Eye allergy is another reason why your eyes look tired and puffy. When small particles like pollen or cat hair come in contact with the eyes our body produces chemicals called histamine, that dilates the blood vessels beneath the eyes, increases blood flow and causes inflammation.

Dehydration
Lack of water in the body can make you look tired and leads to swelling of eyes. This happens because the skin around your eyes is very sensitive and dehydration can make them look exhausted. So, even after getting seven to eight hours of sleep, drink plenty of fluid.

Intake of salty food
Excess salt intake can lead to water retention in the body, especially around your eyes. The fluid retention can stretch the super-thin skin around your eyes and make them look tired. Reduce your salt intake and drink more water to reduce the inflammation.

Excess caffeine intake
The morning cup of coffee is very important, but if you have a habit of drinking 4-5 cups of coffee in a day then your eyes might look swollen in the morning. Excess of caffeine intake dehydrates you and makes you look dull and tired. Reduce your coffee intake and drink green tea, which is packed with antioxidants and helps to keep your skin healthy.

Eyestrain
Squinting, straining to see far-away objects, or struggling to read can strain your eyes, which dilates the blood vessels and leads to dark circles and puffiness. Take a break from your computer screen after 20 minutes. Also, meet your eye doctor to know if you need glasses.

High intake of salt makes you prone to gastrointestinal bloating

If you consume diet high in salt, it may make you vulnerable to gastrointestinal bloating, a study has revealed.

The findings came to fore after researchers in the US re-analysed data from a large clinical trial conducted two decades ago.

They found that high consumption of sodium increased bloating among trial participants.

“Bloating is one of the leading gastrointestinal complaints in the US and can be exacerbated in some people by a high-fiber diet. Our results suggest that they might be able to reduce that bloating, without compromising on healthy fiber, by lowering their sodium intake,” said the senior author of the study.

Bloating features a buildup of excess gas in the gut. The production of gas can be attributed to gas-producing gut bacteria breaking down fiber. There is also some evidence that sodium can stimulate bloating.

The study is the first to examine sodium as a cause of bloating in the context of low- and high-fiber diets.

The study analysed data from the DASH-Sodium trial, conducted at four clinical centres during 1998-99. It tested the DASH diet, a high-fiber diet which is relatively low in fat and high in fruits, nuts, and vegetables, against a low-fiber control diet.

Each of the two diets was tested at three levels of sodium, and the 412 participants all had high blood pressure at the trial start.

WHAT HAPPENS IN YOUR BODAY WHEN YOU EAT TOO MUCH SALT

Your body needs salt for fluid balance, muscle and nerve function. But salt can wreak havoc on your body when you take too much of it.

Who would have thought that salt could also affect your brain function? Studies have indicated that low levels of sodium could impair memory. However, a  study found that adults who lead sedentary lifestyles and consume high-sodium diets had a higher chance of cognitive decline than those with less salt in their diets.

High blood pressure

Most of the sodium in the diet comes from salt, although many foods contain small amount of sodium. Sodium is both an electrolyte and mineral. It helps keep the water and electrolyte balance of the body. But too much sodium in your system causes your body to hold onto water, putting an extra burden on your heart and blood vessels. Too much salt or too much water in your system will affect the balance and may lead to or raise blood pressure in some people. Having less sodium in diet may help you lower or avoid high blood pressure.

Heart disease and stroke

High blood pressure caused by eating too much salt can damage the arteries leading to the heart. Researchers found that high intake of salt may double your risk of heart failure. High salt consumption is one of the major causes of high blood pressure and an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Kidney problems

Your kidneys remove wastes and extra water from the blood through urine. A high salt diet will raise the amount of sodium in your bloodstream and wreck the delicate balance, affecting the ability of your kidneys to remove water and resulting in higher blood pressure. A high salt intake has also been linked to high amount of protein in the urine, which is a major risk factor for the decline of kidney function.

Diabetes

A new research being presented at this year's annual meeting of the Study suggests that sodium intake may be linked to an increased risk of developing both type 2 diabetes (T2D) and Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA).
LADA is a form of type 1 diabetes in which the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas are destroyed by the body's own immune system. But unlike typical type 1 diabetes, LADA develops very slowly, sometimes over a period of years.

How much sodium should you eat a day?

Many people consume a lot of sodium without realising the consequences of it. The American Heart Association recommends no more than 2,300 milligrams (mgs) - amounts to one teaspoon - per day and an ideal limit of no more than 1,500 mg per day for most adults.
According to the World health organisation (WHO), children should not eat more than 4grams of salt a day - babies under a year need less than 1g of salt per day as their kidneys can’t cope with sodium.
Avoiding or cutting back on prepackaged and processed foods can help reduce your risk of serious diseases.

Why Excess Salt is Bad for You!

In a recent study it was found out that high intake of salt may increase one’s risk of a heart failure.  In fact the risk can double up if your intake of salt is too high. If you love eating fries, nuts, wafers and any processed foods that have salt in it, it increases the risk of heart failure by 2 times.  The researched mentioned that people who consumed salt less than 6.8 grams are at a lesser risk in comparison to consumption of 13.6 grams of salt every single day. The study was conducted by taking the urine sample of more than 4630 people that includes both men and women. Their salt intake was analyzed based on this. That’s how they came to the conclusion that more than 13.6 grams of salt per day can be very dangerous fro your heath. Now this study only spoke about high risk of heart failure. We will give you 5 more reasons that show why excess salt is bad for you.

Bloating

If you have ever faced chronic bloating that may be because you are eating foods with high salt content. Salt sucks out most of the water from your body that causes bloating and water retention.

Coronary heart disease

Coronary heart diseases occur when the blood flow to the heat is reduced or blocked. And this happens when there is too much salt in your body.  And if you cut your salt intake, you will have a healthy heart.

Asthma

There have been several studies conducted in the past that suggested that asthma can also occur because of a high salt intake. If you already have asthma it is better that you choose healthier options for food.

Obesity

Now salt is not directly linked to obesity or weight gain. When you have anything that has a high salt content in it, it makes you thirsty and you end u drinking sugary or fizzy drinks. This can lead to weight gain.  Apart from this if you have French fries and wafers too often, then that can cause obesity.

Kidney stone

High salt diet causes a high production of calcium by the kidney which then goes to the urine. The calcium content is stored and with time it leads to kidney stones.  Kidneys usually control the fluids in your body to be balanced. And excess salt will only make it worse.
