Eating too much protein can raise your risk of getting cancer

Protein is an essential part of a healthy diet. It helps build and repair muscles, promotes weight loss, increases satiety and reduces fat. However, the high protein diets that exceed the recommended daily amount have been associated with several health risks including cancer.

Studies have shown that diets that are high in protein, particularly in red meat-based protein are linked with increased risk of cancer. Eating protein from other sources has been associated with a decreased risk of cancer. Researchers believe that this can be due to the carcinogenic compounds and fat in the meat.

According to the studies, extra protein in your diet can up your risk of dying from cancer by 4 per cent. Not just this, meat lovers are more likely to die of diabetes.

Even if you consume a moderate amount of protein, you may still be three times more likely to die of cancer than those who get less than ten per cent of their calories from protein.

The study included 6,138 participants over the age of fifty and was published in Cell Metabolism and authored by Valter Longo.

How much protein is too much?

On an average, one should eat about 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, says several studies and health agencies. For example, if your weight is 50 kilos, you should eat no more than 40 grams of protein daily.

The protein diet

High protein diet: When you get 20 per cent of your calories or more from protein, including both plant-based and animal-based.

Moderate protein diet: When you get 10 to 15 per cent of your calories from protein.

Low protein diet: When you get 10 per cent or less of your calories from protein.

According to the study, the amount of carbs and fat a person ate, did not seem to play a role in the rates of cancer.

What you can do?

The answer is simple and obvious, cut back your protein intake, especially that come from meat, dairy and cheese. But do not go extreme as that can make you malnourished very quickly.

The good news is having a low level of protein reduces the likelihood of early death by 21 per cent.

But once you turn 65, you can make your protein intake moderate as protein protects against frailty and muscle loss, which is common as you age.

Why Hot Dogs and Processed Meat Might Be the Most Dangerous Foods of All Time

Who isn’t afraid of the word “cancer”? We all know a family member or a friend who had it. And indeed, according to the American Cancer Society, more than one million people in the United States suffer from cancer each year. According to scientific studies, certain foods such as hot dogs, bacon, potato chips and even sugar could possibly increase the risk of cancer. In addition, processed meat like hot dogs may also contain harmful ingredients such as nitrites, MSG, and mechanically separated meat (MSM).

The World Health Organization ranked processed meat such as bacon and hot dogs alongside cigarettes as a major cause of cancer.

It’s important to note that there could be many causes of cancer and food is just one of them. The American Cancer Society lists many possible causes for cancer disease, including genetic factors, lifestyle factors such as smoking, diet, lack of physical activity, certain types of inflammation and environmental exposures to different types of chemicals and radiation.

Back in 2015, the World Health Organization classified processed meat as a carcinogenic to humans. This means that there is a strong scientific evidence about it being a cause of cancer. Specifically processed meat has been shown to increase the risk of colon cancer and potentially other forms of cancer.

The World Health Organization ranked cured and processed meats alongside cigarettes as a major cause of cancer. This doesn’t necessarily say they are equally as dangerous but it describes the strength of the scientific evidence about them being a cause of cancer.

The medical journal Circulation published a systematic review of studies linking processed meats to a higher risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Let’s have a look at foods and additives that increase cancer risk. This will help you understated what foods you SHOULD eat and what foods you should avoid (or at least reduce their consumption).

1. High Intakes of Red Meat, Processed Meat (Such as Hot Dogs, Bacon) or Charred Food

It has been found that bowel and stomach cancers are more common in people who eat lots of red and processed meat.

Red meat includes all fresh, minced and frozen beef, pork, lamb or veal. Also processed meats posses a risk for cancer. These have been preserved in some way other than freezing and include bacon, ham, salami, sausages, corned beef, black pudding, pâté and tinned meat.

When you eat processed meats, you’re almost assuredly consuming sodium nitrite or sodium nitrate, which are added to processed and cured meats to preserve color and extend shelf life. Unfortunately, these compounds can be converted to nitrosamines, which are also known to cause cancer in laboratory rats (though again, the link to people is unclear).

Also hot dogs, bacon and the like may also be preserved by methods involving smoke or salt, which also increases the exposure to potentially carcinogenic chemicals.

Also charred food creates chemicals that can damage our cells, making them more likely to become cancerous. Therefore the way you cook your meat can potentially make a big difference in the cancer risk it poses to you. Well-done and char-grilled meats that are slightly burnt on the outside are among the worst foods that increase the risk for cancer. You can read more about it in my article about the best cooking methods for cancer prevention.

Why Hot Dogs Might Be the Most Dangerous Food of All Time

Hot dogs are America’s number one treat with more than seven billion of them consumed every summer. They hit the streets in the 19th century when they were introduced by the German immigrants. Soon, they were given an iconic status and became a part of many nations’ eating culture.

But when you look at what goes into hot dogs and how they are made, you might be surprised to find out that this much loved food is lurking with health dangers.
Hot Dogs are a Health Hazard

Frankfurters are nutritionally empty processed foods. There is nothing natural about them and the factories produce them in a highly robotized manner at an astonishing rate of 300,000 hot dogs per hour.

Traditionally, hot dogs are made from a mixture of pork, beef and chicken. Leftovers from cutting steaks or pork chops and ‘edible’ slaughter by-products are used. These include fatty tissue, skins, animal feet and heads.

These trimmings are grounded and mixed together into a thick paste. To make the sausages taste good, a plethora of additives is added, including excessive amounts of salt, corn syrup, monosodium glutamate (MSG), nitrates, and other chemicals (in this regard, read my previous article about the top 10 worst ingredients in food).

Flavorings vary depending on where the hot dogs are sold, as people in different regions have different tastes. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) doesn’t require manufacturers to list flavorings on the label, so just about anything goes. Flavorings include the infamous monosodium glutamate (MSG) and carmine – a dye from the shells of small beetles, boiled in ammonia or sodium carbonate.

Hot Dogs can Cause Cancer

Nitrates and nitrites are the next on the list of problematic additives used in hot dogs. In the presence of high heat they combine with amines in processed meat to form nitrosamines.

It’s the nitrosamines that have been linked to cancer – especially colon, bladder, stomach, and pancreas cancer.

According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, one hot dog a day increases your risk for colorectal cancer by 21%. Even organic hot dogs contain nitrite, sometimes even in higher amounts than the conventional hot dogs.

Processed meats in general have been shown to increase the risk of pancreatic cancer by 67% in a study by the University of Hawaii.
Hot Dogs Contain Questionable Ingredients (Such as MSM)
Hot dogs may also contain mechanically separated meat (also named MSM). According to the USDA, this is a type of meat that has been mechanically separated from the bone by pushing it under high pressure through a sieve or similar device to separate the bone from the edible meat tissue.

The United States banned the use of mechanically separated beef in 2004 due to its association with mad cow disease (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy).

However, the USDA says that mechanically separated pork is permitted and must be labeled as “mechanically separated pork” in the ingredients statement. Hot dogs can contain no more than 20% mechanically separated pork.

2. Questionable Additives In Processed Foods

Many different substances are added to commercially prepared foods, such as artificial colors, chemical flavors, salt, sugar or artificial sweeteners (read my article about the top 10 worst ingredients in food).

These additives are constantly investigated by researchers to check if any of them is thought to be of a real risk. Sometimes a particular additive or additives are thought to be of a cancer risk. Heavily salted, smoked and pickled foods, for example, may increase the risk of stomach cancer.

This may explain why there is such a high rate of stomach cancer in Japan, where salty, pickled foods are popular. Also an epidemiological study published in June 2010 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that a diet high in salt can increase the risk of stomach cancer in 10%. Also artificial food coloring presents many health risks.

The research on artificial food coloring and cancer is limited to animal studies, including mice and rats, but some claim that these dyes are toxic – possibly toxic enough to cause cancer also in humans.

Using Bleach Sparingly May Still Endanger Your Health

Using gloves while handling bleach is a must, we all know that, but it turns out that gloves may not be enough to protect you from the harmful effects of bleach, as the toxic gases products containing bleach emit may get into the lungs and even the bloodstream. This is especially true about mixed cleaning products that contain both bleach and limonene, a cleaning agent and fragrance with a lemon scent commonly used in cleaning products. To learn how bleach-based cleaners can affect one’s health and how to protect yourself from the negative effects of bleach, continue reading.
When used separately, limonene and bleach are not overtly dangerous, although even then, it would be a stretch to say that these compounds are completely safe to use. Both chemicals can cause skin irritation and allergic skin reactions, but apart from that, using bleach to clean dishes and do laundry in hot water can emit toxic carcinogenic compounds, such as chloroform and carbon tetrachloride.
Limonene, on the other hand, is one of the most common volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that linger indoors, which are a group of organic chemicals emitted from everyday home items that can cause eye, throat and lung irritation and may have long-term negative health effects as well.
When combined, the two compounds can become even more harmful to one’s health, which is extremely alarming, as hundreds of cleaning brands use both ingredients in their products. The mixture of limonene and bleach exposed to light creates secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) that are released in the air.
This has been proven experimentally, with one recent study mixing the two chemicals in a controlled indoor environment and finding SOAs in far greater than normal concentrations in the air shortly after. SOAs are toxic gases that are also part of smog, and they have been long known to contribute to lung and heart disease in the long run.
Regular exposure to SOAs is extremely dangerous, as the particles of these gases are so small they can travel directly into your bloodstream through your lungs and cause difficulty breathing, coughing and even heart attacks. This is especially dangerous in an indoor environment that doesn’t typically get enough air circulation. The study mentioned above is the first of its kind to explore the interactions between fragrance compounds and other cleaning agents, and the authors point out that other fragrances, too, can potentially produce SOAs when mixed with bleach.
To avoid the negative impact of cleaning products containing bleach, consider the following tips:
  • Use natural cleaners, such as baking soda or vinegar solutions instead of bleach.
  • If you insist on using bleach to clean your home, opt for pure bleach and avoid scented products that contain bleach, as these are far more likely to create SOAs.
  • Air out your home regularly, especially right after cleaning.
  • Use a sanitary mask and gloves when using bleach.
  • Avoid using bleach in hot water.
  • Opt for fragrance-free cleaners altogether, as the VOCs can linger in the air or stick to furniture and textiles.

How To Prevent Prostate Cancer

n the last year alone, 221,000 men, including  some famous actors  were diagnosed with prostate cancer, of which 29,000 ended up losing their lives. Such statistics might sound terribly grim, but there is actually a reason to be optimistic since there are quite a number of methods that you can adopt to prevent and even cure prostate cancer. Keep reading to learn all about them:

 Prevention
1. Try a Mediterranean Diet
A study showed that men who eat over 10g of garlic a day end up halving their chances of getting prostate cancer halved, compared to those men who consumed less than 2g a day. The Mediterranean diet also typically includes red wine, which contains resveratrol, an antioxidant that may stop the growth of prostate cancer.

2. Love Yourself Regularly
According to a recent study, men who masturbate five or more times a week were 34% less likely to get prostate cancer by the time they reached 70. The lead study author, says that "seminal fluid contains substances that are carcinogenic,” and that "regular ejaculation may help flush them out."
Treatiment
1. Consume More Herbs
Scientists  have discovered that a mixture of herbs including rosemary, ginger, green tea, and oregano decreased prostate cancer cell growth by 78%. Scientists believe that this works by inhibiting the activity of COX-2, which is a protein linked to the cancer's progression.

2. Use CAD (Computer-Assisted Doctor)
If you decide to use a prostatectomy to solve the problem, you may want to consider getting the new robot-assisted version done, which is far less intrusive and has a lower recovery time. Data shows that 50% fewer men became impotent and 90% fewer men became incontinent after having a CAD prostatectomy performed on them in comparison with traditional methods.
3. Restore Your Erections
The cavernous nerves, which are responsible for causing erections, often suffer after a prostate removal. This can obviously wreak havoc on your sex life, however taking a nerve graft from your ankle as a replacement has been found to be a highly effective solution. If you decide to go down this route, then the only side effect you should experience is a slight numbness in your foot.

Carcinogenic Materials Found In Most of Our Homes

We all want to do as much as possible to make sure our family has a happy and healthy life. To do this, we try to refrain from using items and materials that might harm them, whether it's a dangerous toy or a table with sharp corners, but while we choose healthy foods and safe activities, we unwittingly fill our home with products that may increase the risk of cancer and other health problems. This is why it is important that you familiarize yourself with the following 11 carcinogenic items that are present in most homes.

1. Air fresheners

According to a report released by the scientists, many of the air fresheners used in our homes on a regular basis contain compounds that can cause us harm and even cancer. The vast majority of air fresheners, even those labeled "natural", contain a group of chemicals called phthalates, the most common being DEHP, DIDP and DINP. As part of the National Toxicology Program , it was reported that DEHP is a substance that may be carcinogenic to humans and that these chemicals may adversely affect brain development and sexual development.

It's important to note that the most at risk are infants, pregnant women, and chronic patients. Since household air fresheners are very simple to prepare, there is no reason why you should continue to use products that contain hazardous substances that may harm your health.

2. Shower curtains and similar plastic products

You’ve probably already heard about polyvinyl chloride polymer, also known as PVC because it's the third most common type of plastic. Although this type of plastic may be fine for some uses, such as in sewage pipes, it can be dangerous if we are exposed to it around the house. Shower curtains contain PVC and other toxic compounds that may be released while you shower.
These toxins can affect the reproductive and respiratory system and can cause cancer. This is why it’s important to check what your bathroom curtain is made of, and if it contains this dangerous plastic, you should choose healthy alternatives such as natural cotton or curtains that contain EVA. Also, don’t hesitate to check your children's plastic toys and plastic containers in your home to make sure they don’t contain PVC.

Microwaving plastic

First of all, it's important that you familiarize yourself with the symbols that adorn various plastic containers, toys and other products made of plastic. Once you know the different types of plastics, it should be noted that none of them are recommended for microwave heating. In fact, plastic containers labeled "microwave safe" just mean that they won’t melt while being heated. Keep in mind that heating plastic increases the potential for the penetration of chemicals into the food you eat!

3. Materials for cleaning fabrics and carpet shampoo

If you use detergents to clean clothes stains or your carpets it's important to make sure that they don't contain Trichloroethane or Naphthalene. If you do find them on the ingredients list, you should stop using the product as both contribute to an increased risk of lung or throat cancer. If you encounter a stubborn stain on your favorite carpet, you can easily remove it with baking soda. All you have to do is sprinkle a little baking soda on the carpet, allow the stain to be absorbed and finally clean with a vacuum cleaner.

4. Items returned from dry cleaning

According to the cancer specialists, a dangerous substance that’s hidden in your closet is trichloroethylene, a chemical that may stick to clothes and items that have been dry cleaned. Inhalation of this transparent liquid vapor can damage the central nervous system, with symptoms similar to those of alcohol poisoning including headaches, dizziness, and confusion to the point of loss of consciousness and death.
In addition to this, the substance is suspected to be carcinogenic. Therefore, the next time you give your clothes to the dry cleaners, don’t forget to make sure that they don’t use detergents containing trichloroethylene or other chemicals that could unknowingly endanger your health.

5. Pest Repellent and pesticides

Many pests enjoy setting up camp on our four-legged friends, which is why most of us buy different products to kill those unwanted visitors. But we need to pay attention and be very alert when choosing tick a flea repellents because, as in the case of our detergents, there are various carcinogenic chemicals that may be present in them, as well as in products that treat children's head lice.
Products containing chemical substances such as permethrin or organophosphates are probably carcinogenic and dangerous for humans. Therefore, you have to be very stringent when choosing these products. Additionally, you can take care of head lice naturally, repel bugs, and take care of your dog and cats flea problem without chemicals.

6. Talcum powder

There are quite a few people who use talcum powder in their sneakers or socks to prevent unpleasant sweating or odors, and quite a few mothers put it in baby diapers to prevent rashes. This is why it is important that you know what substances you should be wary of on its label. You should avoid buying talc that contains asbestos fibers, found to be unsafe by the researchers, as it increases the risk of ovarian cancer and lung diseases.

7. House paint

From time to time we want to liven up the walls of our house and give them a fresh and clean look, and a good way to do this is by painting them. But the most common problem with paint is the volatile compounds it contains. As paint begins to dry, the chemicals "escape" into the air and this may continue for several years after painting.
People who work or live in an area that has just been painted can breathe in these chemicals, which can cause a variety of health problems such as headaches, dizziness and other severe symptoms. Because of these problems, paints that contain less volatile compounds have become more desirable, and you should look for these paint options.

8. Teflon cookware

Several years ago, the researchers found a carcinogenic substance called PFOA inside Teflon cookware. Researchers added that Teflon secretes toxic substances and gases at high temperatures, which can lead to various diseases and even cancer. However, it's important to note that if you keep your Teflon cookware in good condition and undamaged, you can continue to use it, but at the same time, avoid long or high-temperature cooking.

9. Anti-bacterial products

We generally tend to put our trust in antibacterial products that are supposedly designed to make our environment as safe as possible. However, in many cosmetics and hygiene products, including soaps and toothpastes, a substance called Triclosan, registered with the Government Agency as an insecticide, has been found, and it may be carcinogenic. Although initial experiments on the subject have only been done on mice so far, they have raised enough concerns to ban the use of products containing this substance in EU countries.

10. Antiperspirant deodorants

Most of us are careful to apply deodorant every day to reduce armpit sweat and keep our bodies smelling nice, and there are countless different types which offer different smells and textures. Despite the rich selection and tempting offers that make us choose a certain type of deodorant, it's important to know that antiperspirant products, which contain aluminum salts, may promote the growth of cancer cells in the body and may cause breast cancer.
It should be noted that this information is not conclusive and that other studies contradict this claim, but in any case, if you decide to reduce the use of antiperspirant deodorant, you can replace it with coconut oil. ( I stopped using deodorants, since a year, instead use a mixture of baking soda, coconut oil and rose water, which you can see in various uses of baking soda in this blog). This is very effective, costs less, above all no chemicals.

11. Candles

Another dangerous and poisonous product that may be in your home comes disguised as scented candles. Although the government banned the sale of lead wicks, you should carefully examine the candles in your home to rule out the possibility that they contain this dangerous substance.
A simple way to check if your candle contains lead requires only a piece of paper. Hold the candle in such a way that you can rub the wick on the piece of paper, and if it doesn’t leave a mark on the page, it probably doesn’t contain lead. If you find that the candles in your home are not safe, you can easily make an orange candle, and enjoy its wonderful taste, its pleasant smell, and its bright light.
The list of products above is only a fraction of the products that you think are safe, but might actually be causing harm to you and your family. The article is not intended to instill fear or apprehension, but to raise awareness and help you make the smartest choices while purchasing or preparing items to be used in your home.
