Weight loss: Replace your tea or coffee with green or jasmine tea (Day 7)

India is a tea drinking nation and even coffee comes a close second in nationwide consumption, if not equal. However, if you wake up with the help of tea, you should know that it may be harming your overall health. Many people have a shot of black coffee as a pre workout meal and it is okay if it's helping your weight loss goal. But let's resolve to cut down on our dependence on coffee and tea and replace at least one cup of coffee or chai with green tea or jasmine tea or any natural herbal tea of your choice.

If you are confused about your choice of green tea, first step is to pick green tea leaves over green tea sachets. There are multiple variations of the green tea and the leaves taste better than the teabag.

It is also noteworthy that the teas contain ingredients that help in boosting your immune systems, fighting infection, and lowering the risk of diseases. They are also rich sources of antioxidants.
An important antioxidant that is available in green tea is catechin, which has proven to be useful in lowering risk of cardiovascular disease, degenerative diseases, and also aids in kidney and liver function.

Both jasmine tea and green tea have anti inflammatory properties and can also help is regulating your bowel system. Jasmine tea is also said to lower the risk of diabetes.

The right time to have green tea is at noon or evening. So instead of reaching out for a cup of coffee during mid meals, prepare a cup of green tea or jasmine tea for yourself. There are many interesting cups available which can help you brew your tea even when you are away from the comforts of your home.

If you have stayed away from the goodness of green tea or jasmine tea because you can’t stand its taste, get leaves that suit your taste and give yourself at least 3 to 4 days to allow it to completely win you over.

15 Surprising Benefits of Guava Leaves

Guava leaves are among the most versatile and nutrient-dense plant parts in the world, boasting a diverse range of compounds and potential health benefits.

What Are Guava Leaves?

Guava leaves are the leaves of the guava plant, and they are one of the many medicinally useful portions of this plant. Guava leaves contain many different polyphenolic compounds and other antioxidants, such as flavonoids, tannins, and saponins, as well as eugenol and various active compounds. The fruit and the bark of the guava tree often get the most attention, but the leaves can be used in many ways for natural healing remedies. This plant is native to Mexico and other Central American countries, where it is a critical part of cultural, culinary, and medicinal traditions.
Guava leaves can also be used in many different ways; some people choose to crush the leaves and use the extracted juices in their hair masks to stimulate hair growth. Steeping the dried leaves in hot water can also produce a beneficial tea that is packed with antioxidants. Chewing and eating the leaves directly can be used as a gastrointestinal aid while crushing the leaves can also produce a topical anti-inflammatory salve when mixed with other carrier oils or cosmetic products.

Benefits of Guava Leaves

The major benefits of guava leaves include the following:
  • Preventing hair loss
  • Lowering cholesterol levels
  • Reducing allergic reactions
  • Improving skin appearance
  • weight loss
  • Reducing the risk of diabetes
  • Preventing diarrhea
  • Aid in digestion
  • Treating tooth-aches
  • Aid in dengue fever
  • Preventing prostate cancer
Let us discuss them in detail below.

Hair Loss

By crushing guava leaves, you release many of the active ingredients and antioxidants in the juice, which can stimulate hair growth and prevent inflammatory conditions on the scalp that can lead to premature hair loss.

Weight Loss

The active ingredients in guava leaves have the peculiar ability to stop the absorption of carbs by the body, which can decrease the amount of sugar and calories the body absorbs, thus helping with weight loss.

Diabetes

Not only can the catechins in guava leaves help to burn fat more effectively, but also help the body naturally regulate blood sugar levels, which is good news for diabetics and those at high risk for the disease.

Cholesterol

Gallic acid and the other catechins found in guava leaves are able to help suppress the total cholesterol levels in the body, which can help to prevent atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular conditions.

Diarrhea and Dysentery

In traditional use, guava leaves were often chewed and eaten to prevent diarrhea and dysentery, thanks to the antimicrobial properties of the leaves. You can also boil the leaves and remove the extract, then drink the mixture for 2-3 days until the symptoms disappear.

Digestion

In addition to countering microbes and other bacteria in the gut, guava leaves can also stimulate the release of certain gastric enzymes that can speed digestion and improve nutrient uptake in the body.

Bronchitis

Drinking guava leaf tea is an excellent way to reduce inflammation in the respiratory tracts, and speed the recovery from conditions like bronchitis by suppressing the desire to cough.

Toothaches

The leaves of the guava plant can help to prevent microbes from gaining a foothold in your mouth, which can protect against toothaches, cavities, and other oral diseases that can produce tooth pain.

Sore Throat

The proven anti-inflammatory abilities of these leaves, particularly when brewed into a tea, can soothe any inflammation or irritation in the throat.

Dengue Fever

One of the side effects of eating guava leaves is an increase in platelet levels, which can help to fight back against the symptoms of Dengue fever, making it a vital herbal remedy in some parts of the world.

Prostate Cancer

Although additional research is needed, a research report published  shows that the antioxidant effects of guava leaves can counter the oxidative stress and inflammation that can lead to prostate cancer.

Sperm Production

A number of studies have shown that supplementation with guava leaves is able to improve sperm count and boost fertility.

Wounds and Infections

When guava leaves are crushed and made into a salve, it can be applied directly to wounds, which will not only speed healing but also prevent infections from taking hold in those areas.

Acne and Black Spots

A popular addition to cosmetic products, guava leaf juice is known to reduce inflammation on acne breakouts and suppress the rise of blackheads on the face.

Anti-Aging

The many flavonoids, tannins, and other antioxidants in guava leaves make it an ideal remedy for premature aging, as it can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and age spots, and increase skin elasticity.

Astaxanthin: The World's Best Antioxidant?

If you have a healthy interest in your own well-being, you've probably heard the word 'Antioxidant'. Antioxidants are molecules that protect our cells from free radicals that damage our cell membrane, cause damage to our entire body and, since cell damage is the same as getting older, makes us grow old before our time. This is why eating foods that are rich in antioxidants, such as eggplant, grapes, berries, mangoes, carrots, seafood and others is extremely important for our continued youth and well-being.

Antioxidants not only make our skin look younger, it also makes our body literally younger, reducing the damage it has to deal with, giving our muscles more strength and keeping our nervous system and brain younger and more resilient to the damages of time.

But sticking to a diet can be tiring. We're all human and it's hard to keep up with all the antioxidant rich foods we should be eating on a daily basis.
So when it comes to powerful antioxidants, you should know about Astaxanthin: A molecule that seems perhaps to be the most powerful antioxidant known. This is a compound harvested from a certain type of red kelp that produces Astaxanthin as a way of protecting itself against ultra-violet light. This component is what gives these kelp (as well as birds that eat them such as the flamingo) their red coloring.

Astaxanthin compares astoundingly well to other nutrients and powerful lipid-soluble antioxidants when it comes to free radical scavenging and neutralizing singlet oxygen.
Astaxanthin is known as the most powerful of antioxidants because it is:
6000 times stronger than Vitamin C.
500 times more effective than Vitamin E.
550 times more powerful than green tea catechins.
11 times stronger than beta-carotene.
As much as 2.75 stronger than lutein with regard to singlet oxygen quenching.

astaxanthin

Researchers believe some of the advantages astaxanthin has are due to its ability to cross th eblood-brain barrier and protect our brain cells and nervous system from oxidative stress.
Benefits of using a powerful antioxidant that works for you:
Preventing the likely development of fast replicating cancerous cells.
- Gives your skin a youthful appearance and prevents wrinkles.
- Supports your visual health, protecting your vision.
- Maintains your cardiovascular health.
- Supports the health, structure and function of joint tissue.
- Reduces the risk of cataracts.
- Lowers high blood pressure.
- Helps prevent cognitive diseases such as Parkinsons and Alzheimer's.
- Boosts the immune system and prevents the outbreak of inflammation and infection.

To get your fill of astaxanthin, you can either get a specialized supplement or dine on wild pacific salmon. Make sure it's not just any salmon, because wild pacific salmon have 400% more astaxanthin than they do.

Green tea beneficial for more than just obesity

Green Tea has once again been found as the Hail Mary for not just obesity but various other inflammatory biomarkers linked with poor health, finds a recent study.

The study was done on mice to find out what other benefits can green tea actually provide.

The researchers found that the mice were fed a diet of 2 % green tea extract fared better than those that are a diet without it, a finding that has prompted an upcoming study of green tea's potential benefits in people at high risk of diabetes and heart diseases.

The benefits were seen in the new study appear to stem from improved gut health, including more beneficial microbes in the intestines of the mice and less permeability in the intestinal wall which is commonly called as the leaky gut.

The results of studies looking at obesity management so far had been a real mixed bag.

Some seem to support green tea for weight loss, but a lot of other research had shown no effect, likely due to the complexity of the diet relative to a number of lifestyle factors. Our goal was to figure out how it revents weight gain, said the study's lead author.

The researchers devised an experiment that examined green tea's effects in male mice fed a normal diet and a high-fat diet designed to cause obesity. ( Female mice are resistant to diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes, so they weren't included).

For 8 weeks, half of the mice ate a high-fat diet designed to lead to obesity and half were fed a regular diet. In each of those groups, half ate green tea extract mixed in with their food.

After that, they measured body and fat tissue weight, insulin resistance, leaky gut syndrome and the inflammation of the fat tissue and intestines.

The mice fed a high-aft diet supplemented with green tea gained about 20% less weight and had lower insulin resistance than mice fed an otherwise identical diet without tea.

Those mice also had less inflammation within fat tissue and the intestine. Furthermore, the green tea appeared to protect against the movement of endotoxin, the toxic bacterial componenet, out of their guts and into the bloodstream.

Plus, the researchers found evidence of stronger-less " leaky" guts in these mice. Leaky gut is a problem in humans that contribute to widespread low-grade inflammation and has been implicated in a number of health problems.

The researchers also found that the green tea appeared to contribute to a healthier microbial community in the guts of the mice fed a high-fat diet. Mice fed the normal, or low-fat diet supplemented with green tea also had benefits including reduced weight gain and lower endotoxin levels and markers of leaky gut, but these were relatively  modest compared with the effects were seen in mice fed the high-fat diet.

10 cups a day is the amount of tea equivalent to what the mice were fed by the researchers.

The researchers are planning to experiment on human next and explore the effects of green tea on leaky gut in people with metabolic syndrome, a condition that pre-disposes people to type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Green tea had a rich history in Asian countries and has been increasingly embraced in the West, in part for its potential health benefits. Catechins, anti-inflammatory polyphenols found in green tea, have been linked to anti-cancer activity and lower risk of heart and live disease.

5 diet tips to stay healthy and fit this winter

Winter began back in November but the temperatures have started stooping low and our bodies have started responding to the cold. The winters are pleasant and beautiful but also bring with them laziness and a change in our diet which may lead to unwanted health outcomes, including weight gain.

Diet is a very important component for staying fit and healthy, and especially when the vegetable markets are flooded with green leaves and so much nutrition, a little effort in the winter season made for your body can go a long way. Here are a few foods that you can include in your diet this winter.

Guava

According to the nutritionist, one guava has 45 calories, 1 gram of protein, 10 grams of carbohydrate, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorous, vitamin C - which is essential for growth and repair of tissues and vitamin A - which helps boost immunity. Guava is a powerhouse of nutrition and it is suggested to include it in your diet in the winter.  Guava is also an extremely versatile fruit that can be used in salads, made juices with, and also used for making salsa.

Honey

Even though honey has fundamentally more calories than sugar, it is sweeter, and hence, required less to provide the same level of sweetness. It also has less fructose content than sugar which means it doesn't raise blood sugar levels in the amount that sugar does. Honey is an all natural substitute for sugar. Honey also helps in the winter season by helping kill bacteria and cure sore throats and regular colds.

Mustard Leaves

Mustard leaves are high on fibre and nutrients, low in calories, and also very filling for your stomach. According to a nutrient data, they provide bone-building calcium and immunity building vitamin A and can be used as a substitute for dairy products, if you want to avoid them in your diet.

Tea

A single cup of regular coffee and similar hot beverages can add up to 300 calories to your diet. Tea is naturally calorie-free, which means it provides the warmth without adding the weight to our body, and also contains flavonoids which are healthy for the heart. Tea contains vitamin K, C, and D. A nutritionist says that tea is rich in antioxidants called catechins, which have been observed to reduce the chances of cancer. On the plus side, there are also a variety of options to choose from – e.g, ginger tea - which helps with a sore throat and cold. The antioxidants present in green tea also help build immunity. You can choose your favourite type or alternate between two or three types and flavours of tea.

Mac n Cheese

As unbelievable as it sounds, it is actually true. In a recent study published, it was claimed that women who satisfied their craving to eat mac n cheese everyday, ate less of it and consumed fewer calories. Others who resisted the temptation all week and ate only one day consumed more calories in the process, leading to weight gain.

The idea is to include foods that are “off-limits” in your diet in small proportions so that they lose their charm and you are not tempted to eat them in huge amounts.

7 Effective Natural Remedies For Chin Hair Removal

1. Spearmint Tea

The androgen-lowering effects of spearmint tea came to scientists’ notice when clinicians in a town in Turkey found that the tea reduced libido in men. Following this observation, a test was performed on 21 women with idiopathic hirsutism (where the cause is not known) and PCOS-related hirsutism. The women were given spearmint tea twice daily for 5 days in the follicular phase – the phase between their period and ovulation.
There was a decrease in the circulating testosterone. The researchers concluded that spearmint can be an alternative remedy for mild hirsutism.4
How to use
  • Use 5–6 fresh spearmint leaves or 1 tsp dried spearmint.
  • Add this to 1 cup of boiling water and cover this for 5 minutes.
  • Strain and drink 1 cup twice every day.5

Fennel / Saunf

Fennel has an antihirsutism effect on idiopathic hirsutism. Researchers used creams containing 1% and 2% fennel extract on patients of idiopathic hirsutism and found that the cream containing 2% fennel extract could reduce the diameter of hair by 18.3%. This has to do with fennel’s estrogen-like property.10
How to use: You can use fennel seed extract or fennel oil topically.

Licorice/ adhimadram( tamil name)

You may know that licorice has medicinal value in fertility-related problems in women. The glycyrrhizic acid in it breaks down into compounds that have an estrogen-like activity and inhibit the synthesis of androgens.
A study found that when a 15% licorice gel was used along with alexandrite laser, it was more effective in removing terminal hair than when only the laser treatment was used.11
Adding licorice to your diet will also have similar results. In one study on healthy women, researchers found that having 3.5 g licorice every day for 2 months reduced their serum testosterone levels from 27.8 ng/dL to 17.5 ng/dL at the end of the second month.12
How to use
  • Take 1 tsp dried and sliced licorice roots.
  • Simmer in 1 cup water for 10 minutes.
  • Drink twice a day.13

Papaya And Turmeric Paste

Papaya contains the protein-breaking enzyme papain that has a proven depilatory or hair-removing function.16 This enzyme is most active in raw papaya.
Turmeric, however, hasn’t shown any such effect, contrary to what is believed in India.17 It is possible that because turmeric tints both the skin and the hair yellow, the hair is less visible against the yellow skin. This is mistaken as reduced hair growth. However, turmeric is an anti-inflammatory agent that can ensure good skin health.
How to use
  • Mix 2 tbsp of papaya and 1/2 tsp of turmeric into a thick paste.
  • Massage onto the chin for 15 minutes.
  • Wash off.
  • Do this once or twice weekly.
Note: Don’t use the turmeric you use for cooking. It can have additional colors. Buy whole turmeric, grind it dry, and store for cosmetic use.

Other Possible Remedies

  • Green tea: Drinking or applying green tea on your hairy areas may also have a beneficial effect. Green tea contains catechins (epigallocatechin-3-gallate and epicatechin-3-gallate), which selectively inhibit the action of 5-alpha reductase.21
Remember that chin hair does not merely mar your appearance and self-confidence, it may indicate a health condition that needs to be fixed immediately. There are no quick fixes. If the root cause is PCOS, as it is most of the cases, you need to follow the right diet and exercise regularly. Before using any of these natural remedies, have a word with your doctor, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
