Should you stop having dairy if you want to lose weight? We tell you

“Is it necessary to ditch dairy to lose weight?” is a a common query among weight watchers. Most people on a mission to lose weight shun dairy products as it is widely believed that milk and milk products can lead to weight gain. Dairy products have gained a bad reputation as they contain fats which are considered bad while on a weight loss plan.

Well, completely eliminating dairy from the diet have proven to be beneficial when trying to shed kilos. However, it is not absolutely necessary to do so. If you love dairy products, there is no harm in consuming it. You just have to make some healthy swaps as per your fitness goal.

Debunking the myth
Milk does contain saturated fat, but it is also a great source of calcium and protein. Calcium keeps our bones and teeth strong and protein helps to repair damaged tissue and muscles.

The dairy itself doesn’t lead to weight gain. The actual problem arises when you overindulge or consume unhealthy dairy products. Not all dairy products are good for health and you have to choose the one that suits your requirement and at the same time practice mindful eating.

Eliminating an entire food group from your diet may have some adverse effect on your health. As per a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, dairy products do not lead to inflammation in the body, which is said to be the reason for weight gain. This only happens when you are lactose intolerant.

Here are the 3 best dairy products you can have

Yoghurt

By yoghurt, we are not talking about the flavoured ones. Have a bowl of plain yoghurt with some berries or nuts. Regular yoghurt is low in fat and keeps your gut healthy. You can have it during snack time to avoid munching on unhealthy food items.

Cottage cheese

100 grams of cottage cheese contains 11 grams of protein. This dairy product helps to fuel muscle growth and also keep you full for a longer period of time. Cottage cheese is low in calories, but you should be careful about the amount of sodium added in it.

Skimmed milk

Skimmed milk is free from dietary fat and calorie. You can have a glass of skimmed milk post-workout to energise yourself and repair the damaged tissues. Just do not add sugar to your milk.

Add little sugar and drink as hot as possible before going to bed. You'll get great relief from cough and phlegm.

Oranges can help you lose weight

Fruits have always been an essential part of a weight loss diet plan. They are naturally sweet, contain fiber and are loaded with vitamins and minerals. Though all fruits are nutritious and healthy and you include them in your diet, some fruits are great fat burners.

Winter is here and with it, oranges are back in season. This sweet and tangy fruit is everyone's favourite and now you have another reason to try this fruit this season. Oranges are considered excellent when trying to lose weight and tone your body. Here is why you should include this fruit in your diet.

Nutritional values of orange
Oranges are low in calories and are loaded with vitamin C and other nutrients. One medium-sized orange contains:
50 calories
0.9 grams of protein
16.2 grams of carbs
3.4 grams of fiber
238 milligrams of potassium
61 milligrams of calcium
17 milligrams of phosphorus
63.5 milligrams of vitamin C

Oranges and weight loss
First of all, the water content of the fruit is very high. Almost 87 percent of this fruit is water. So, it will keep you hydrated in the winter season, when we generally drink less amount of water.

Oranges are loaded with fiber, which helps in easy bowel movement and keeps you full between the meals. Regular bowel movement is necessary when trying to shed kilos.

Vitamin C is the most abundant nutrients in oranges, which enhances skin health. The fruit helps the body to repairs damaged tissue and heal itself.

As per a 2014 study, the water-soluble vitamin found in oranges may help in obesity prevention and management. Moreover, the nutrient may reduce soreness and promote glycemic control while increasing the fat burning process in the body.

Last but not least, fruits are naturally sweet. So when you crave for something sweet, eat oranges.

Immune cells rewire, repair brain while we sleep

Researchers have found that immune cells called microglia, which play an important role in reorganising the connections between nerve cells, fighting infections, and repairing damage, are also primarily active while we sleep.

Microglia serve as the brain’s first responders, patrolling the brain and spinal cord and springing into action to stamp out infections or gobble up debris from dead cell tissue.

“This research shows that the signals in our brain that modulate the sleep and awake state also act as a switch that turns the immune system off and on,” said study lead author Ania Majewska, Professor at University of Rochester in the US.

In previous studies, Majewska’s lab has shown how microglia interact with synapses, the juncture where the axons of one neuron connects and communicates with its neighbours.

The microglia help maintain the health and function of the synapses and prune connections between nerve cells when they are no longer necessary for brain function.

For the findings, researchers conducted the study on mice.

The current study points to the role of norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter that signals arousal and stress in the central nervous system.

This chemical is present in low levels in the brain while we sleep, but when production ramps up it arouses our nerve cells, causing us to wake up and become alert.

The study showed that norepinephrine also acts on a specific receptor, the beta2 adrenergic receptor, which is expressed at high levels in microglia.

When this chemical is present in the brain, the microglia slip into a sort of hibernation.

The study, which employed an advanced imaging technology that allows researchers to observe activity in the living brain, showed that when mice were exposed to high levels of norepinephrine, the microglia became inactive and were unable to respond to local injuries and pulled back from their role in rewiring brain networks.

“This work suggests that the enhanced remodeling of neural circuits and repair of lesions during sleep may be mediated in part by the ability of microglia to dynamically interact with the brain,” said the study's first author.

“Altogether, this research also shows that microglia are exquisitely sensitive to signals that modulate brain function and that microglial dynamics and functions are modulated by the behavioural state of the animal,” the first author said.

Adhesive gel to repair eye injury without surgery

American scientists have designed an adhesive gel that can seal wound or ulcers on the surface of the eye, thus sparing the need for eye surgery.

The study  showed that the gel packed with light-activated chemicals can not only close the defect but also regenerate it, the news agency reported.

“We wanted this material to allow the cells of the cornea to mesh with the adhesive and to regenerate over time to mimic something as close to the native cornea as possible,” said the paper’s co-corresponding author, a professor of ophthalmology.

The gel is clear and viscous in a dropper or syringe, but when exposed to blue light in a short time, it hardens to take on features of a native cornea, and the the cornea cells gradually grow into and become one with the gel, according to the study.

The gel is the first to use visible blue light as opposed to ultraviolet light, which carries a level of toxicity.

In a pre-clinical study, the researchers administered the gel at 20 per cent concentration to corneal defects of 3 mm, and applied visible light for four minutes, leading to a firm adhesion to the defect.

One day later, they observed a transparent, smooth eye surface without inflammation. Over time, the tissue regenerated and the new tissue showed few differences with the native one, according to the study.

The researchers expected to start clinical trials to test the technology in human patients in approximately one year.

Corneal injuries are a common cause of visual impairment worldwide, with more than 1.5 million new cases of corneal blindness reported every year. Some of them require corneal transplants that carry risks of post-transplant complications like infection or rejection.

A low-calorie plant diet relieves inflammation, repairs gut

Repeated cycles of a low-calorie, plant-based diet have shown promise as a treatment for inflammatory bowel disease.

Scientists recently tested what they describe as the "fasting-mimicking" diet on a mouse model of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

In a paper the researchers describe how, compared with water-only fasting, periodic 4-day cycles of the fasting-mimicking diet "partially reversed" hallmarks of IBD in the mice.

They saw that the diet reduced inflammation and increased populations of stem cells in the mice's intestines. Stem cells are essential for tissue repair and regeneration.

In addition, the team observed that these effects appeared, in part, to be due to an increase in beneficial gut bacteria.

Results from humans also showed that the diet reduced markers of inflammation and associated immune cells.

Taking these results together, the researchers conclude that a low-calorie, plant-based, fasting-mimicking diet has potential as an effective treatment for IBD.

Corresponding study author, a professor of biological sciences, says that their investigation is the first IBD study to bring together "two worlds of research."

"The first [world]," he explains, "is about what you should eat every day, and many studies point to a diet rich in vegetables, nuts, and olive oil. The second is fasting and its effects on inflammation, regeneration, and aging."

He and his colleagues suggest that the reason that water-based fasting does not seem to be as effective as the fasting-mimicking diet could be because while fasting produces many of the desired effects, the body still needs essential nutrients to do the rest.
