Overspill of fat shown to cause Type 2 diabetes

Researchers have been able to observe people developing type 2 diabetes- and confirmed that fat over-spills from the liver into the pancreas, triggering the chronic condition.

We saw that when a person accumulates too much fat, which should be stored under the skin, then it has to go elsewhere in the body. The amount that can be stored under the skin varies from person to person, indicating a ' personal fat threshold' above which fat can cause mischief, said the lead author of the study.

The study involved a group of people, who previously had type 2 diabetes but had lost weight and successfully reversed the condition as part of the DiRECT trial.

Although the majority remained non-diabetic for the rest of the 2 year study, however, a small group went on to regain weight and re-developed type 2 diabetes.

When fat cannot be safely stored under the skin, it is then stored inside the liver, and over-spills to the rest of the body including the pancreas. This ' clogs up' the pancreas, switching off the genes which direct how insulin should effectively be produced and this causes type 2 diabetes, he said.

According to the researchers, this study confirms that type 2 diabetes is caused by excess fat actually within both the liver and pancreas, and especially that this process is reversible.

This new study builds on previous research showing exactly why type 2 diabetes can be reversed back to normal glucose control.

Those studies led to the large DiRECT trial which showed that primary care staff can achieve remission of type 2 diabetes by using a low calorie diet with support to maintain the weight loss.

A low-calorie plant diet relieves inflammation, repairs gut

Repeated cycles of a low-calorie, plant-based diet have shown promise as a treatment for inflammatory bowel disease.

Scientists recently tested what they describe as the "fasting-mimicking" diet on a mouse model of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

In a paper the researchers describe how, compared with water-only fasting, periodic 4-day cycles of the fasting-mimicking diet "partially reversed" hallmarks of IBD in the mice.

They saw that the diet reduced inflammation and increased populations of stem cells in the mice's intestines. Stem cells are essential for tissue repair and regeneration.

In addition, the team observed that these effects appeared, in part, to be due to an increase in beneficial gut bacteria.

Results from humans also showed that the diet reduced markers of inflammation and associated immune cells.

Taking these results together, the researchers conclude that a low-calorie, plant-based, fasting-mimicking diet has potential as an effective treatment for IBD.

Corresponding study author, a professor of biological sciences, says that their investigation is the first IBD study to bring together "two worlds of research."

"The first [world]," he explains, "is about what you should eat every day, and many studies point to a diet rich in vegetables, nuts, and olive oil. The second is fasting and its effects on inflammation, regeneration, and aging."

He and his colleagues suggest that the reason that water-based fasting does not seem to be as effective as the fasting-mimicking diet could be because while fasting produces many of the desired effects, the body still needs essential nutrients to do the rest.

The 12:12 intermittent fasting diet

As more and more people are trying to lose weight, intermittent fasting (IF) continues to be one of the most popular fitness trends across the world. Studies have shown that IF can be a powerful weight loss tool that can effectively help you fight belly fat while also improving health in many ways. It is claimed that it can benefit your brain health, reduce your risk of certain conditions - such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, - and may even help you live a longer life.

For the uninitiated, intermittent fasting is an eating pattern or a diet regimen that cycles between brief periods of fasting (with either no food or significant calorie reduction) and non-fasting over a defined period. There are different types of intermittent fasting such as the 16/8 method, the 5:2 diet, eat-stop-eat -- all of which involve vary in the number of fast days and calorie portions. But if you’re a newbie faster and trying to lose weight or do away with that unhealthy visceral fat using the intermittent fasting, most of them can seem too extreme for you. But fret not, here’s one that’s considered best for beginners - the 12:12 method. Let’s try to figure out what exactly is the 12:12 fasting and how does it help with weight loss.

What is 12:12 fasting? Is this the best diet plan to lose weight for beginners?

Basically, the 12:12 plan is a type of intermittent fasting where you eat for 12 hours of the day and fast for the other 12 hours. This method requires you to limit your daily calorie intake within a 12-hour window (meaning 12 hours eating, 12 hours fasting), rather than eating whenever you want throughout the day. For instance, if you eat your evening meal or dinner at 8 p.m., you should have your breakfast around 8 a.m. the following morning while on this plan. The 12:12 is claimed to be the simplest type of intermittent fasting, especially for beginners who are trying to lose weight or simply want to improve health.

According to a research, fasting for 12+ hours most days may promote weight loss, prevent disease and promote longevity. The researchers, who divided the mice into four diet groups and categorised them into different feeding schedules, found that mice fasted for at least 12 hours and kept their eating within a set 12-hour time frame experienced significant weight loss compared to mice eating the same diet but with liberty to eat all day long.

The researchers also discovered that mice in the time-restricted feeding groups also saw improvements in blood sugar, insulin, insulin sensitivity, and hunger hormones apart from weight loss when compared to the groups of mice who ate whenever they wanted all day.

The bottom line

Additionally, various studies ( in both animals and humans) have shown that intermittent fasting could be an effective way for losing weight, especially belly fat, as it may slightly boost your metabolism while helping you consume fewer calories. The diet plan may also boost digestion and reduce bloating, as well as improve mental clarity. One of the best things about IF is that it may help those who tend to overeat with late-night snacking as fasting can reduce hunger, helping you stick to your diet plan.

However, it may be noted that intermittent fasting is certainly not for everyone. You should talk to your doctor or a health professional before trying IF, especially if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, underweight or living with certain medical conditions, including diabetes, low blood pressure, etc.

Ladies, you may want to reduce your intake of calories for just two days a week as a recent study has suggested that doing so can lower you risk of breast cancer.
The Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention study found that following a low-calorie diet for two days per week or a 5:2 diet can lead to cancer-preventing changes in the breast tissue.

The study saw overweight pre-menopausal women at high risk of breast cancer follow the 2-Day Diet, developed by research dietitian Dr Michelle Harvie and researcher Tony Howell, for one month. The diet features two days on a low-carb, low-calorie diet, with the remaining five days being spent on a healthy, Mediterranean-style diet.

Researchers took breast biopsies on 20 women before and after the four-week trial and found that on average, women lost around half a stone in weight, with 55 per cent of those taking part experiencing changes in their breast cells.

The changes involved the production of proteins that are known to make the cells more stable and less likely to become damaged. Therefore, experts said, the risk of developing breast cancer is reduced.

Dr Harvie noted that further research would need to be done to confirm how the diet could prevent breast cancer, adding "There are a number of reasons why some of the women didn't experience changes in the breast; for example, they may have needed to spend a longer period of time on the diet or perhaps follow a different version of The 2-Day Diet."

The study was published in Breast Cancer Research.
