5 Neuroscience Based Ways to Clear Your Mind

As an ultra-endurance athlete, I’ve competed in the Badwater Ultramarathon a few times. Some call Badwater the “world’s toughest footrace” because it's a 135-mile non-stop run from the bottom of Death Valley to Mt. Whitney—in the middle of July, when temperatures can reach 130 degrees.

The physical discomfort of running five marathons back-to-back through Death Valley in the middle of July requires more psychological finesse than it does aerobic endurance. Succeeding in sports is always going to rely on mastering your mindset and explanatory styles. As Yogi Berra said, “Baseball is 90 percent mental; the other half is physical.”

One of the most important skills I've learned as an ultra-endurance athlete is how to clear my mind of unwanted thoughts. When your feet are covered in blisters, the pavement is hot enough to fry an egg, and you still have three marathons to run, you learn quickly how to pull any tricks from your psychological toolbox that will help you reach the finish line.

When every alarm in your body and brain is sounding a red alert telling you to stop, how does someone push through and keep on going? When it comes to clearing your mind of unwanted thoughts, taking a multi-pronged approach that gives the situation what it needs has always worked for me in sports, and I think it will work for you, too, in sport and in life.

For this post, I’ve compiled a top-five list of mental tricks I learned as an athlete to clear my mind of pain, negative thinking, anxiety, rumination, and self-sabotage. I’ve paired the lessons I learned through life experience with the latest neuroscientific evidence. I also included some images that capture the essence of each point, as a picture really is worth a thousand words.


1. Distraction

American editor and publisher Elbert Hubbard,once said, “Life without absorbing occupation is hell—joy consists in forgetting life.” Neuroscientists at Brown University recently confirmed that the key to “optimal inattention” lies in occupying your mind with something else through distraction.

The mind can only really think of one thing at a time. When you concentrate your attention on one thing, you inevitably engage the parallel act of purposefully ignoring other things. In a 2015 study, “Attention Drives Synchronization of Alpha and Beta Rhythms between Right Inferior Frontal and Primary Sensory Neocortex,” published in the Journal of Neuroscience, the researchers at Brown were able to identify how the brain achieves "optimal inattention" by changing the synchronization of brainwaves between different brain regions. The researchers hope that by harnessing the “power to ignore," people with chronic pain will have new cognitive tools for reducing their pain.


For this study, participants were told that they would feel a brief tap on the left middle finger or the left big toe. In some cases, they were then told to report only stimuli felt on the foot and to disregard what they might feel on their hand. In other cases, they were told to attend to or report sensations only in the hand and to ignore those in the foot.

The researchers found significant patterns of synchrony between various regions which showed that the mind could direct attention to either the hand or the foot, but not both at the same time.

If you ever find yourself obsessing or ruminating about a thought, remember that distraction is a highly effective way to shift the synchronization of your brainwaves and gives you the "power to ignore" on demand. 


2. MindfulnessThe Brown study's co-senior author, Catherine Kerr, is an assistant professor of family medicine in the Alpert Medical School. Her team has also found that people can learn how to manipulate their alpha rhythms in the somatosensory cortex as they switch their attentional focus though mindfulness training.

The results of their latest research expand our understanding of how mindfulness might possibly operate using the mechanism of redirecting attention via control of alpha rhythms in the brain, which can help people ignore depressive thoughts. In a press release, she said:

This is part of a really cool effort ... to see if you can take pretty high-level cognitive questions, find the relevant areas in the brain, and then figure out how to put that in a context with the underlying neurophysiology, at the level of computational models and animal models. We're linking different ways of looking at the brain that don't usually come into dialogue with one another.


In another recent study from Lund University in Sweden, researchers led by Jan Sundquist found that mindfulness treatment can be as effective as individual cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in patients with depression and anxiety.


3. Suppression
Nietzsche said, “The existence of forgetting has never been proved: We only know that some things do not come to our mind when we want them to.” It turns out that modern brain imaging technology has allowed neuroscientists at the University of Cambridge to identify two opposite ways in which the brain forgets unwanted memories.

In a 2012 study, “Opposing Mechanisms Support the Voluntary Forgetting of Unwanted Memories,” published in the journal Neuron, the researchers’ findings help explain how individuals can cope with negative or traumatic experiences, and could lead to the development of treatments to improve disorders of memory control.

In a press release, lead author Roland Benoit, then a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University, said, "This study is the first demonstration of two distinct mechanisms that cause such forgetting: one by shutting down the remembering system, and the other by facilitating the remembering system to occupy awareness with a substitute memory."  


During memory suppression, a brain structure called dorsolateral prefrontal cortex inhibited activity in the hippocampus, a region critical for recalling past events.

"A better understanding of these mechanisms and how they break down may ultimately help understanding disorders that are characterized by a deficient regulation of memories, such as post-traumatic stress disorder," Benoit said. "Knowing that distinct processes contribute to forgetting may be helpful, because people may naturally be better at one approach or the other."


4. Substitution

Although the strategies of using suppression and substitution were found to be equally effective at voluntarily forgetting unwanted memories, the researchers at Cambridge found that they activated very distinct neural circuits.

If suppression doesn't work, you might want to put on your "rose-tinted glasses" and try substitution, by using your imagination to pretend you're in a different place or experiencing something else.

The Cambridge researchers found that memory substitution was supported by caudal prefrontal cortex and midventrolateral prefrontal cortex. These are two regions typically involved in bringing specific memories into awareness in the presence of distracting memories.

The next time you need to clear your mind, remember that you can forget unwanted memories by either suppressing them or substituting them with more desirable ones, and that each of these tactics engages distinct neural pathways.


5. Meditation

Rebecca Erwin Wells, M.D.,and Fadel Zeidan, Ph.D. at Wake Forest Baptist Health are investigating the power of meditation as a therapy to reduce pain and everyday anxiety in healthy individuals with no previous meditation experience.

When Wells was a varsity rower at the University of North Carolina, her coach had all the members of the team take a yoga and meditation class. The experience had a huge impact. In a press release Wells recalled the experience:

My teammates and I noticed that yoga and meditation improved our flexibility and focus, but also made us feel better, not just when we were rowing but in our everyday lives. I wondered if yoga and meditation really have scientific benefits, especially if they have specific effects on the brain, and if so, how that works.

"We're coming to recognize that meditation changes people's brains," said Wells, now an assistant professor of neurology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. "And we're just beginning to gain understanding of what those changes mean and how they might benefit the meditator."

In the first study, her team found that just eight weeks of meditation significantly improved functional connectivity in the brain's network that is active during introspective thought such as retrieving memories. They also observed trends of less atrophy in the hippocampus.

Zeiden is exploring the specific brain mechanisms that influence meditation's ability to reduce perceptions of pain and the experience of anxiety. In Zeidan's pain study, participants were asked to grade the pain caused by a device that heated a small area of their skin to 120 degrees. Participants who rated the pain they felt while they meditated reported the pain as 40 percent less intense and 57 percent less unpleasant than when they simply rested with their eyes closed.

The brain imaging performed during this experiment showed decreased neural activity in the area of the brain involved in feeling the location and intensity of pain and increased activity in brain regions associated with attention and the ability to regulate emotions.

In Zeiden's anxiety-related research, the subjects reported decreases in everyday anxiety by as much as 39 percent after practicing meditation. The scans of their brains while meditating showed increased activity in areas of the cortex associated with regulating thinking, emotions, and worrying. In a press release Zeiden said:

In these studies we've been able to get a better sense of the brain regions associated with reducing pain and anxiety during meditation. Basically, by having people meditate while their brains are being scanned we've been able to objectively verify what people like Buddhist monks have been reporting about meditation for thousands of years.

"Our research shows that meditation produces robust effects in behavior and in the brain and may provide an effective way for people to substantially reduce their pain," Zeidan concluded. "What we have to do now is continue to find out exactly how it works and what it involves."

A Maryland fitness fanatic runs into an alarming ailment that was caught in the nick of time

B.G. went to great lengths to stay out of the doctor's office.

His belief in the power of exercise - particularly running - to keep him fit and healthy had long been an article of faith. If he wasn't feeling well Goldsmith would lace up his shoes and "run it off." The Maryland patent lawyer routinely racked up about 30 miles per week - more when he was training for a marathon or triathlon - interspersed with swimming, cycling and weight training.

For more than 30 years, his strategy worked.

"B. is incredibly fit and he's always been this major athlete to avoid seeing doctors," said his wife, a former teacher. His aversion persisted even after his sister became a family physician.

But several years ago, G., now 56, experienced a series of alarming episodes he couldn't outrun.
They followed a pattern: first a rush of what felt like acid would shoot up G's legs. Then came 10 minutes or so of pounding heart palpitations that ended with a wave of nausea.

At first, the episodes were sporadic. But eventually they increased in frequency and duration, leaving G crumpled on a neighbor's lawn at the start of a run.

The couple were shocked to discover that G's problem was potentially fatal and had been germinating for years, partly camouflaged by his stellar level of fitness.

"Being in good physical health was a blessing and a curse," G. said recently. "The longer I waited, the more I put myself at risk."

Off the charts

G.  first noticed the problem in 2014 at the end of a cross-country flight. Landing in California, he stood up and felt the rush of acid, palpitations and nausea, which subsided fairly quickly.

Maybe, G. remembers thinking, he had been sitting too long. When the episodes recurred every month or so, he found them "concerning," but for months did not mention them to his wife or his internist whom he saw every year or so. In 2015, he developed occasional morning headaches.
G. consulted the cardiologist he had seen as a precaution for a low heart rate, which can result from vigorous exercise, but did not mention the episodes. The doctor said that G. appeared to be healthy.
"He told me, 'I'm fine now, I cleared it,' " his wife recalled, "and kept pushing."

By 2016, the morning headaches were occurring more often. At times G. felt tired, but assumed he was getting older or hadn't slept well.

"We both just kind of ignored it," his wife said. "Nothing intensified and most days he was fine."
But during a 5K race in July 2017, G. felt so weak he had to stop midway and walk to the finish line. The palpitations and nausea were more frequent.

G. called his sister, who suggested he see an endocrinologist. Some of their relatives had thyroid problems; perhaps he did, too.

The endocrinologist he saw in September ordered blood tests, which revealed a slightly sluggish thyroid. During the visit, G. mentioned in passing the running problem, which hadn't recurred, and his morning headaches. The endocrinologist suggested he might want to try thyroid medication and recommended that he return in three months.

By late fall, G. was having more trouble completing a run; his headaches had become a near-daily event.

An ophthalmologist friend suggested that he might be experiencing blood pressure spikes, even though his readings in doctors' offices were normal. That made sense: both his parents had developed mild hypertension in their 60s.

At his friend's suggestion, G. bought a blood pressure cuff. He immediately suspected the device was malfunctioning: the readings at times were off the charts - so high they couldn't possibly be accurate, he thought. One registered 204/118, a reading consistent with a hypertensive crisis, which can require emergency treatment. At other times they were normal, about 125/85.

G. tried using a friend's cuff; the same thing happened.

Despite his wife's increasing insistence that he call his doctor, G. waited a month. He said he wanted to see if the readings stabilized.

"I kept pushing, but he fought all of it," she recalled. "He downplayed everything. That was his style," a characterization with which G. agrees.

In December, G. acceded to his wife's wishes and saw one of his internist's partners. His blood pressure reading in the office was a worrisome 170/87. G. told the doctor, who prescribed medicine to reduce his blood pressure, that he was switching jobs and under a lot of stress. Goldsmith took the medicine faithfully, but the spikes continued.

Things fall apart

In January 2018, G.  returned to the endocrinologist, accompanied by his wife. He mentioned the blood pressure spikes and headaches. The specialist ordered blood tests to check G's hormone levels and convinced him to start taking a low dose of medicine for his underactive thyroid.

As they were leaving the office his wife suggested they stop at the lab downstairs for the tests the endocrinologist had ordered. G. demurred: he hated needles. His internist had recently increased the dose of his blood pressure drug and he said he wanted to see if the new regimen worked before getting the blood tests.

But the increased dose of blood pressure medicine, later augmented by a second drug, made him feel worse. And G. had developed a new symptom: profuse sweating.

Keeping close track of his blood pressure, he had noticed a pattern. Shortly after waking up, when he had a headache, his blood pressure was usually sky-high. An hour later, it returned to normal. At that point, he took his blood pressure medicine, went for a run and took another reading. It was an alarmingly low 83/48, and G. typically felt weak and spent, fearful that he might pass out. But in a few hours, the reading returned to normal.

Doctors told him that calibrating the proper dose of blood pressure medication can be tricky and suggested he change the timing.

In May, things fell apart.

During a run with friends, G. stopped after less than a mile. He then vomited and sank onto a neighbor's lawn, too weak to stand.

His wife arrived minutes later. By then he seemed to have recovered somewhat.

She remembers feeling furious and terrified. "I said, 'This is not working! You're damaging your heart. You need to find a blood pressure specialist,' " she remembered.
G. went online to see what he could learn about the causes of blood pressure spikes. References to a rare, typically benign tumor of the adrenal gland called a pheochromocytoma kept popping up. The symptoms sounded familiar: sudden hypertension or blood pressure spikes, profuse sweating, rapid heart rate, weakness and headaches. These result when the tumor releases uncontrolled bursts of hormones including adrenaline, particularly in response to physical exertion or stress. Adrenal hormones help control many functions including heart rate, metabolism, blood pressure and response to stress.

G.  emailed his internist and asked if it was possible that he had such a tumor, known in medical jargon as a "pheo."

The internist replied that it was and told him to call the endocrinologist.

A week later, he was back in her office. The doctor told him that one of the blood tests she had ordered six months earlier - which he had not gotten - could have helped answer this question. It measured the level of catecholamines - hormones secreted by the adrenal glands, the paired organs atop the kidneys. Elevated levels of these hormones can signal an endocrine tumor.

G's levels turned out to be far above normal.

The endocrinologist sent him for an abdominal CT scan, which revealed an enormous tumor, roughly the dimensions of a small acorn squash, engulfing his right adrenal gland. It was probably a pheo, about 10 percent of which are malignant.

The tumors, which are diagnosed in about 2 of every million adults annually in the United States, are rarely the cause of high blood pressure, accounting for 0.2 percent of hypertension cases.

Pheos often develop for unknown reasons, but in at least 25 percent of cases, genetic factors play a role. Doctors consider the tumors a "time bomb"; they can cause a stroke, kidney failure, heart attack or sudden, unexplained death. Treatment typically involves surgery to remove the tumor, along with the affected adrenal gland.

G's endocrinologist immediately called Washington endocrine surgeon.

An anxious wait

Surgeon  met with the couple two days later.

The size of G's slow-growing tumor - 10 centimeters - made laparoscopic removal a challenge that would require two surgeons, she told the Gs.

"It's clear he's had it for many years," the Dr. said.

Although frightened by the prospect of surgery and the risk of sudden death posed by such a tumor, G. said he was reassured by Dr.'s experience, her straightforward manner and by the fact that she, too, was a runner.

The Dr., who has performed more than 250 such surgeries, ticked off possible complications, which include postoperative heart problems and blood loss requiring a transfusion.

He first needed to take drugs to stabilize his blood pressure, which could shoot up significantly during the operation.

For his wife, the two week pre-op period crawled by, dominated by the specter of her husband's sudden death. Every morning, she said, she awoke wondering whether he was still alive.

"I didn't want to leave his side," she recalled.

Dr. said that the June 29 procedure "went perfectly." He was scheduled to spend two days in the intensive care unit and a total of five days in the hospital, but G. was well enough to be discharged the day after his surgery.

Six weeks later, with Dr.'s approval, G resumed running, although initially at a slower pace and a reduced distance. His blood pressure remains slightly elevated, which is common after surgery. He will require lifelong monitoring to make sure the tumor doesn't recur, which is rarely the case.

In the months before his diagnosis, G said, fear was an obstacle: he was increasingly afraid of what doctors might find.

In retrospect, he wishes he'd acted with greater dispatch. "I could have saved a few years," he said.

Recommended Fitness Regimens for All Ages from Experts

More and more people in the Western world suffer from diseases that could have been avoided had they just exercised regularly, but the idea of exercising every day is daunting and causes many to give up very quickly. However, many experts argue that you don’t have to go to the gym every day to be healthy, and in fact, there are some new guidelines to know about the amount and type of exercise recommended for each age group. In fact, the most important thing is to make exercise enjoyable for you, all you need to do is find an activity that interests you, it doesn’t have to be weight lifting or jogging, and engage in it with pleasure. Here are the recommendations for the amount and type of exercise recommended for each age group.

Ages 6-17

While children aged 3-5 need to be active all day long, older children need only one or more hours of moderate to high-intensity activity three times a week. Such an activity can be:
  • Aerobic exercise like a dance
  • Muscle-strengthening exercises like swimming
  • Bone-strengthening exercises like running
There are many different classes to enroll children in which can activate their bodies. Let them go to a few different classes and see which form of exercise they enjoy the most.

Ages 18-64

Adults need to do more physical activity than children because they are also more vulnerable to disease due to lack of movement. Each type of exercise has different guidelines to achieve maximum health benefits, and you should dabble in them all:
  • Aerobic exercise - at least 150-300 minutes per week at moderate intensity, or 75-150 minutes per week at high intensity. You can combine the two of course, and its recommended to spread these hours across a whole week. You can take up dancing, squash, swimming or cycling.
  • Muscle-strengthening exercises - at least twice a week at medium to high intensity, with weight lifting or resistance exercises that strengthen all muscles, including legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms. Swimming is a very recommended activity, but of course, you can also do weight training.
  • General exercise - any exercise you add to the previous recommendations will benefit your body. Moderate intensity training can be quick walking or even raking leaves, and high-intensity training can be running and carrying heavy bags from the supermarket home. Know that every time you do such activities you only benefit your health. 

People aged 65 and over

Older adults should follow the recommendations for ages 18-64, but if they can’t because of chronic health problems, exercise should be done twice a week for one of the following types: aerobics, muscle-strengthening, or balance training. It is recommended that you combine these types and perform a different kind of workout each time. Simple examples of such exercises can be ballroom dancing or even walking backwards.
To understand what medium or high-intensity training is for you, rate the level of effort you need to use in a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 being sitting on a chair and 10 being the best effort you can make. Moderate intensity activity should be between 5-6 in effort, where you can talk while exercising but not sing.

Pregnant and postpartum women 

Every woman should consult with her healthcare professional about exercising during and after pregnancy to understand how much exercise is safe for her. If the doctor approves physical activity, the guidelines instruct you to perform moderate-intensity activity up to 150 minutes per week, and of course not once or twice, but spread over several days. If you were very active before getting pregnant, you may be able to continue your regular regimen with a few tweaks, but you should consult your doctor.

The 12:12 intermittent fasting diet

As more and more people are trying to lose weight, intermittent fasting (IF) continues to be one of the most popular fitness trends across the world. Studies have shown that IF can be a powerful weight loss tool that can effectively help you fight belly fat while also improving health in many ways. It is claimed that it can benefit your brain health, reduce your risk of certain conditions - such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, - and may even help you live a longer life.

For the uninitiated, intermittent fasting is an eating pattern or a diet regimen that cycles between brief periods of fasting (with either no food or significant calorie reduction) and non-fasting over a defined period. There are different types of intermittent fasting such as the 16/8 method, the 5:2 diet, eat-stop-eat -- all of which involve vary in the number of fast days and calorie portions. But if you’re a newbie faster and trying to lose weight or do away with that unhealthy visceral fat using the intermittent fasting, most of them can seem too extreme for you. But fret not, here’s one that’s considered best for beginners - the 12:12 method. Let’s try to figure out what exactly is the 12:12 fasting and how does it help with weight loss.

What is 12:12 fasting? Is this the best diet plan to lose weight for beginners?

Basically, the 12:12 plan is a type of intermittent fasting where you eat for 12 hours of the day and fast for the other 12 hours. This method requires you to limit your daily calorie intake within a 12-hour window (meaning 12 hours eating, 12 hours fasting), rather than eating whenever you want throughout the day. For instance, if you eat your evening meal or dinner at 8 p.m., you should have your breakfast around 8 a.m. the following morning while on this plan. The 12:12 is claimed to be the simplest type of intermittent fasting, especially for beginners who are trying to lose weight or simply want to improve health. 



According to a research, fasting for 12+ hours most days may promote weight loss, prevent disease and promote longevity. The researchers, who divided the mice into four diet groups and categorised them into different feeding schedules, found that mice fasted for at least 12 hours and kept their eating within a set 12-hour time frame experienced significant weight loss compared to mice eating the same diet but with liberty to eat all day long. 

The researchers also discovered that mice in the time-restricted feeding groups also saw improvements in blood sugar, insulin, insulin sensitivity, and hunger hormones apart from weight loss when compared to the groups of mice who ate whenever they wanted all day. 

The bottom line

Additionally, various studies ( in both animals and humans) have shown that intermittent fasting could be an effective way for losing weight, especially belly fat, as it may slightly boost your metabolism while helping you consume fewer calories. The diet plan may also boost digestion and reduce bloating, as well as improve mental clarity. One of the best things about IF is that it may help those who tend to overeat with late-night snacking as fasting can reduce hunger, helping you stick to your diet plan.

However, it may be noted that intermittent fasting is certainly not for everyone. You should talk to your doctor or a health professional before trying IF, especially if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, underweight or living with certain medical conditions, including diabetes, low blood pressure, etc.

Like working out in a social setting? Sign up for a class. You'll have a regular exercise time and place, plus a group of people who expect to see you. Remember, a fitness class doesn't have to mean aerobics. Always wanted to learn karate or salsa dancing? Look for a class that will keep you coming back. Or join a walking group or masters swim team. And now a doctor has revealed that people don’t need to sign up to a gym as a balanced diet of plenty of vegetables, fish, dairy and healthy fats can do wonders for their waistline, according to a report. A Dr. also revealed that people can maintain fitness with lots of brisk walking, says the top doctor. Cutting sugar and refined carbohydrates, like cakes, pasta and pizzas, is also key to good health.

 The Dr.  noted, ‘It is clear that diet and lifestyle are far more powerful than drugs or taking to the gym. Lifestyle changes such as consuming less sugar are more powerful than any medication doctors can prescribe. You cannot outrun a bad diet – this should be what doctors are advising their patients. Eating junk food and then trying to beat the bulge with heavy workouts is a waste of time.’ Enjoying dark chocolate and a glass of wine in moderation, however, would be beneficial to health, said the Dr.  He also explained that following a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle can transform a person’s health in just 21 days, reducing the risk of heart disease and diabetes and increasing longevity.
