New AI detects heart failure with 100% accuracy

With the help pf Artificial Intelligence (AI), researchers have developed a neural network developed that can accurately identify congestive heart failure with 100% accuracy through analysis of just one raw electrocardiogram (ECG) heartbeat.

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a chronic progressive condition that affects the pumping power of the heart muscles. Associated with high prevalence, significant mortality rates and sustained healthcare costs, clinical practitioners and health systems urgently require efficient detection processes.

The researchers have worked to tackle these important concerns by using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN)- hierarchial neural networks highly effective in recognising patterns and structures in data.

We trained and tested the CNN model on large publicly available ECG datasets featuring subjects with CHF as well as healthy, non-arrhythmic hearts. Our model delivered 100% accuracy by checking just one heartbeat we are able to detect whether or not a person has heart failure, said the researcher.

The Prof. said, our model is also one of the 1st known to be able to identify the ECG's morphological features specifically associated to the severity of the condition.

The research drastically improves existing CHF detection methods typically focused on heart rate variability that, whilst effective, are time-consuming and prone to errors. Conversely, their new model uses a combination of advanced signal processing and machine learning tools on raw ECG signals, delivering 100% accuracy.

With approximately 26 million people worldwide affected by a form of heart failure, our research presents a major advancement on the current methodology, said the researcher.

This tiny implantable device may help fight obesity

Scientists have developed a battery-free, easily implantable device that fools the brain into thinking that the stomach is full after just a few nibbles of food — an advance that could help combat the obesity epidemic. In laboratory testing, the devices developed by researchers  helped rats shed almost 40 per cent of their body weight.

More than 700 million adults and children worldwide are obese, say researchers who dubbed the growing weight-related health problems a “rising pandemic.” The battery-free, easily implantable weight-loss devices could offer a promising new weapon for battling the bulge, according to the study.

Measuring less than one centimetre across, the tiny devices — which are safe for use in the body and implantable via a minimally invasive procedure — generate gentle electric pulses from the stomach’s natural churning motions and deliver them to the vagus nerve, which links the brain and the stomach. That gentle stimulation dupes the brain into thinking that the stomach is full after only a few nibbles of food. “The pulses correlate with the stomach’s motions, enhancing a natural response to help control food intake,” said a researcher.

Unlike gastric bypass, which permanently alters the capacity of the stomach, the effects of the new devices also are reversible. When researchers removed the devices after 12 weeks, the study’s rats resumed their normal eating patterns and weight bounced right back on. The device has several advantages over an existing unit that stimulates the vagus nerve for weight loss. That existing unit, “Maestro,” approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2015, administers high-frequency zaps to the vagus nerve to shut down all communication between the brain and stomach.

It requires a complicated control unit and bulky batteries which frequently must be recharged. That ongoing maintenance can be a big barrier to use, said  a surgery professor  “One potential advantage of the new device over existing vagus nerve stimulators is that it does not require external battery charging, which is a significant advantage when you consider the inconvenience that patients experience when having to charge a battery multiple times a week for an hour or so,” said the researcher.

The device contains no batteries, no electronics, and no complicated wiring. It relies instead on the undulations of the stomach walls to power its internal generators. That means the device only stimulates the vagus nerve when the stomach moves. “It’s automatically responsive to our body function, producing stimulation when needed,” said the researcher.

Amazing uses of Potatoes

I'm sure that everyone loves potatoes, in whatever form it is cooked, as a dry vegetable, hash browns, cutlets, kurma, pudding, kheer and the varieties are endless and mouthwatering too. But, wait, potatoes can be used for many other useful purposes too.

1) Make a Hot or Cold Compress
This is one you might have read about in books, and it's been used for centuries. Potatoes retain their temperature for a surprisingly long time so if you are out and about on a cold night, keep a couple of hot potato slices in your gloves or pockets. Similarly, if you need to keep cool, use a frozen or chilled potato. If you want to ease aches and pains, then make a hot or cold compress using potato slices inside a sock.
2. Clean Your Windows
Potatoes make for a terrific non-toxic glass cleaner. Take a raw, uncooked potato and rub it over your windows, car windscreen, or even eyeglasses, before wiping away the juice with a clean cloth. You will be left with gleaming glass, without damaging your hands or leaving the smell of chemicals up your nostrils. This works well on clear plastic like swimming or ski goggles as well.
3. Use Potato Juice for Your Ailments
Okay, so potato juice might not sound like the yummiest mixture in the world, but it has been used for centuries to fight various ailments. It is considered effective against ulcers, sprains, gout, sciatica, heartburn and bruising. The juice is rich in vitamins and it's dead easy to make. Just put a couple of potatoes in a blender, zap them for thirty seconds and you're done. Add carrot or cinnamon juice to improve the taste and you have your own homemade medicine.
4.Remove Warts
Warts are a rather unsightly annoyance, and if you get one, you will want to get rid of it. There's no need to go and have it lazered off though, just treat it with a raw potato. Carefully rub the cut end of the potato across the wart, and leave the juice on. Repeat the process every day until the wart is banished for good!
5. Remove a Broken Light Bulb from a Socket
This use of potatoes is trumpeted by numerous sources! At some point in your life, you've probably faced the annoyance of a light bulb breaking as you attempt to unscrew it. You might be wondering why companies can't design bulbs that don't do this, but in the meantime, you have a trusty potato to help you deal with the problem. Cut the potato in half, and gently press the flat side on to the remainder of the bulb. When the bulb is firmly inserted, you can simply screw it out.
6. Feed Your Geraniums
The nutrients in potatoes will help your pot plants grown. You can either carve a small hole in the potato and plant the stem of the flower inside it, before putting the whole thing into the soil; or you can sprinkle some potato shavings into the soil around your already growing flowers to give them a fantastic, natural boost.
7. Sort Out Your Skin
Potatoes are great for your skin, so making yourself a potato face mask once a week can reap rewards. You only need to use mashed potato mixed with water and leave the resulting paste on your face for 30 minutes. A couple of slices of potato can also be used to reduce the appearance of puffy eyes and black circles, and are a great alternative to the more widely used cucumber. The ability of potatoes to clear up minor rashes and acne have been known for centuries!
8. Soothe a Headache
Potatoes have been used to help ease headaches for centuries, and you will only need a few slices. You can rub them into your temples, or for more sustained relief, fix them against your forehead using a headband or bandage.
9. Make Some Great Personalized Art
We all remember making potato stamps and dipping them in paint in art class at school. But don't for a second think that this practice is just the preserve of children. Just draw the shape you want on to the cut potato, carve out the shape and dip it in fabric paint before dabbing it over your canvas. Personalize bags, cushions, walls - whatever you like! It's a really fun and easy way to personalize your home and it's great for kids too.

10. Relieve a Burn
If you burnt your fingers on a hot pan or clipped your arm against the stove while it was still on, reach for a potato. Just 1 slice of raw potato should do the trick - apply it to the burn and fix in place using whatever you have handy.
11. Banish Rust from Metal
Are your old tools or kitchen utensils starting to look like antiques? Restore them to their former glories by chopping a potato in half, adding a liberal amount of soap or salt to the cut end and rubbing it over the affected surface. Rinse and dry the object thoroughly afterward. This works great along the edge of large carving knives!
12. Power a Light Bulb
Okay, so we expect this one is more for fun than anything else, but it's still fascinating and great for entertaining the kids/grandkids. Did you know that potatoes contain lots of energy, and the chemical reactions that take place between the potato juices and a couple of dissimilar metals create enough voltage to power a small electrical device?
To try this for yourself, you will need: 1 large potato, two small coins, two zinc-plated standard nails, three small pieces of copper wire and a small, low wattage light bulb:
1. Cut the potato in half, cut a slit in each half. Wrap the coins in the copper wire a few times, using different wire for each coin. Then slide the coins into the slits.
2. Take the remaining piece of copper wire and wrap it around one of the zinc plated nails. Stick the nail into one of the potato halves.
3. Take the wire that's connected to the coin in the half of the potato that also contains the nail, and wrap it around the second nail. Stick the second nail into the other potato half.
4. Connect the two loose ends of the copper wire to the light bulb and it will light up.
Be careful when allowing children to handle the copper wires as they contain a small electrical charge, and don't perform the experiment near to an open flame.

Wireless system to charge pacemakers developed

Scientists have developed a way to wirelessly transfer power to medical devices deep inside the body – a breakthrough that could lead to novel forms of pacemakers, nerve stimulators and other life-altering gadgets.

The wireless system developed by Stanford University Assistant Professor Ada Poon uses the same power as a cell phone to safely transmit energy to chips the size of a grain of rice.

The technology paves the way for new "electroceutical" devices to treat illness or alleviate pain.
The discoveries culminate years of efforts by Poon, assistant professor of electrical engineering, to eliminate the bulky batteries and clumsy recharging systems that prevent medical devices from being more widely used.

The technology could provide a path towards a new type of medicine that allows physicians to treat diseases with electronics rather than drugs, researchers said.

"We need to make these devices as small as possible to more easily implant them deep in the body and create new ways to treat illness and alleviate pain," said Poon.

Poon's team built an electronic device smaller than a grain of rice that acts as a pacemaker. It can be powered or recharged wirelessly by holding a power source about the size of a credit card above the device, outside the body.

The central discovery is an engineering breakthrough that creates a new type of wireless power transfer – using roughly the same power as a cell phone – that can safely penetrate deep inside the body, said researchers.

An independent laboratory that tests cell phones found that her system fell well below the danger exposure levels for human safety.

Her lab has tested this wireless charging system in a pig and used it to power a tiny pacemaker in a rabbit. She is currently preparing the system for testing in humans.

Poon believes this discovery will spawn a new generation of programmable micro-implants – sensors to monitor vital functions deep inside the body; electro-stimulators to change neural signals in the brain; and drug delivery systems to apply medicines directly to affected areas.

The finding was published in the journal PNAS.

'Afternoon naps' aid children's learning

Getting young children to take an hour-long nap after lunch could help them with their learning by boosting brain power, a small study suggests.
A nap appeared to help three-to-five-year-old better remember pre-school lessons, researchers said.
The benefit persisted in the afternoon after a nap and into the next day.
The study authors say their results suggest naps are critical for memory consolidation and early learning.
When the children were allowed a siesta after lunch they performed significantly better on a visual-spatial tasks in the afternoon and the next day than when they were denied a midday snooze.
Following a nap, children recalled 10% more of the information they were being tested on than they did when they had been kept awake.
Close monitoring of 14 additional youngsters who came to the researchers' sleep lab revealed the processes at work in the brain during asleep.
As the children napped, they experienced increased activity in brain regions linked with learning and integrating new information.
Memory aid
Lead investigator said: "Essentially we are the first to report evidence that naps are important for preschool children.
"Our study shows that naps help the kids better remember what they are learning in preschool."
She said while older children would naturally drop their daytime sleep, younger children should be encouraged to nap.
Dr  said: "It's been known for years that having a short sleep can improve the mental performance of adults, for example doctors working night shifts. Up until now, no-one has looked at the same thing in toddlers. This is important, because pre-school nurseries are divided on whether they should allow their children a nap.
"Toddlers soak up a huge amount of information everyday as they become increasingly inquisitive about the world around them and begin to gain independence.
"To be at their most alert toddlers need about 11-13 hours of sleep a day, giving their active minds a chance to wind down and re-charge, ready for the day ahead. We now know that a daytime sleep could be as important as a night-time one. Without it, they would be tired, grumpy, forgetful and would struggle to concentrate."

POWER NAPS ARE GOOD FOR HEALTH

Naps help recharge, especially if she takes them right after lunch. To combat fatigue and
stay on top of things at work and at home, power naps helps greatly.

Naps and Sleep Deprivation

Daytime naps can be one way to treat sleep deprivation, according to a sleep expert. "You
can get incredible benefits from 15 to 20 minutes of napping," she says. "You reset the
system and get a burst of alertness and increased motor performance. That's what most
people really need to stave off sleepiness and get an energy boost."
The length of your nap and the type of sleep you get help determine the brain-boosting
benefits. The 20-minute power nap -- sometimes called the stage 2 nap -- is good for
alertness and motor learning skills like typing and playing the piano.
What happens if you nap for more than 20 minutes? Research shows longer naps help boost
memory and enhance creativity. Slow-wave sleep -- napping for approximately 30 to 60
minutes -- is good for decision-making skills, such as memorizing vocabulary or recalling
directions. Getting rapid eye movement or REM sleep, usually 60 to 90 minutes of napping,
plays a key role in making new connections in the brain and solving creative problems.

Naps Versus Coffee

Is taking a catnap better than reaching for a cup of coffee? Yes, because caffeine can
decrease memory performance. So you may feel more wired, but you are also prone to
making more mistakes.

Napping Tips

Research has found that napping regularly may reduce stress and even decrease your risk
of heart disease. To get the most out of a power snooze, follow these quick tips :

Be consistent. Keep a regular nap schedule. Prime napping time falls in the middle of the
day, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Make it quick. Set your cell phone alarm for 30 minutes or less if you don't want to wake up
groggy.

Go dark. Nap in a dark room or wear an eye mask. Blocking out light helps you fall asleep
faster.

Stay warm. Stash a blanket nearby to put over you because your body temperature drops
while you snooze.
