Nagging back pain? Anti-Inflammatory Drugs Help a Little, Here's What You Can Do Instead


Back pain can really get disabling. The nagging pain can not only put you on stress but also meddles with your daily routine. According to a recent study published in 'Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases', non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may help a little in getting rid of back pain. On the other hand, excessive usage of such drugs may cause bleeding and ulcers in stomach among other gastro-intestinal problems.

Experts from The George Institute for Global Health, Australia conducted experiments to test the effectiveness of existing medicines that used commonly used for treating back pain. The team examined more than 6000 people from 35 trials. It was found that only one in every 6 patients received any considerable benefit from consuming such medications. The team also brought to light the fact that, in most cases, the effects of NSAIDs are short-lived and often harm people's health. Taking these facts into account, the experts urged to focus more of preventive measures over treatment.
 


Back pain can be caused by a host of different reasons. From an old injury resurfacing, to excessive sitting, sedentary lifestyle and incorrect posture - the culprit can be any or a cocktail of all. Dietary guidelines for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by the abnormal accumulation of fat within the liver. When fat accumulates in the liver, it prevents the liver from performing its many functions, potentially leading to scarring and further damage. Complications associated with NAFLD include liver cancer, fluid accumulation, gastrointestinal bleeding, and mental changes.
 
Following a healthy NAFLD diet plan can help reduce the liver damage and slow down the progression of NAFLD. This is because anything we take into the body is filtered through the liver. Eating unhealthy foods further sickens the liver and contributes to further progression of the disease.

One of the main risk factors associated with NAFLD is being overweight, which is in large part tied to unhealthy diet. Switching to a healthy eating regimen will help protect the liver and promote weight loss, which is also beneficial for liver health.

Dietary guidelines for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

To benefit from a NAFLD diet plan, you need to eat balanced and healthy meals. For starters, you need to be careful about the types of fat you eat. It’s important that you avoid saturated and trans fats, as these can worsen liver health. NAFLD patients are often prescribed a low-fat diet. You should consume unsaturated fats, which are fats that are liquid at room temperature.

Healthy fats include olive oil, safflower oil, corn oil, and canola oil. Nuts and seeds are good sources of healthy fats, too, along with fish and avocados.

Another component of a NAFLD diet plan is reducing your salt intake as it further contributes to fluid retention. Patients should adhere to less than 1,500 mg of salt a day – half a teaspoon. You will need to pay close attention to food labels so that you know how much salt a product has.

Patients must also be mindful of their protein intake and the sources of protein. Typically, one gram of protein is required for one kilogram of weight. For example, if a person weight 60 kg (140 pounds), they require 60 grams of protein.

Healthy sources of protein can be found in lean fish, poultry, or meat, as well as some dairy products, nuts, and plants.

Carbohydrates are necessary as they provide energy. They can be derived from grains and starchy vegetables. Avoid packaged goods like cookies and cakes as well as fried foods.

Foods to eat and avoid with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Ideal meals should include vegetables, seafood, poultry, eggs, legumes, and you can even consume protein powders. Danger foods include candies, processed food, pizza, “diet” foods that claim to make you thinner, foods that contain flour, fried food, foods high in sugar and salt, alcohol, saturated and trans fats, and bagels or muffins.

Here is a sample menu for your NAFLD diet plan.
Breakfast: one serving of fresh fruit, cooked cereal, one slice of whole grain toast, one teaspoon of almond butter, ½ cup of milk, coffee or tea.
Lunch: Mixed greens salad with balsamic vinegar and olive oil, two to three ounces of cooked meat, one serving of starches, one serving of cooked vegetables, one whole wheat roll, one serving of fresh fruit, one serving of milk.
Dinner: Serving of greens and bean salad, three ounces of cooked chicken, one to two servings of starch, one serving of cooked or fresh vegetables, one whole wheat bun, one serving of fresh fruit, one serving of milk.
Snacks: Yogurt or fresh fruit, half a peanut butter and apple sandwich on whole wheat bread with ½ cup of milk.

Your doctor will further guide you on a NAFLD diet plan or you can work closely with a nutritionist or dietician to work out an appropriate diet to promote liver health.

New Device Launched To Detect Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer, which is gradually turning to be a major health-concern among the Indian population, can be prevented with early detection using enhanced technology, health experts said at an event here on Tuesday.

G-EYE, an endoscopy technology which is claimed to detect gastrointestinal diseases more accurately was introduced in India during the event, organised by Smart Medical Systems- manufacturer of gastrointestinal endoscopy devices along with enhanced technology products supplier Ventura Business Solutions.

Colorectal cancer which is mainly caused by genetic disorders or environmental factors, is gradually becoming a major health concern. Currently, around four per cent of Indians are diagnosed by colorectal cancer while it is the third most common cancer among men and second most common in women worldwide.

"There is a serious gap in detection of gastronomical diseases in many countries and colorectal cancer is becoming a growing reason for deaths in western countries. There is a high rate of colorectal cancer patients among Indians who have migrated to US," said Zamir Halpern, Professor, Tel Aviv University, Israel at the event.

The latest device is expected to make it easier to detect and improve the diagnosis and therapy of gastro-intestinal disorders and diseases.

The device uses innovative balloon technology to uncover pre-cancerous polyps that are hidden behind the colon's natural folds and provides the ability to perform double balloon enteroscopy.

"Our presence in India provides a great opportunity to serve the medical community by enhancing physicians' capabilities during endoscopy procedures and providing better treatments," said Misha Krakowsky, Executive Director, Asia Pacific, Smart Medical Systems at the event.

What is laparoscopy, uses and advantages

Laparoscopy is a boon for surgeons and patients alike, as very small cuts are made on the belly, to insert a thin, lighted tube to look at the internal organs.

Gastrointestinal surgery
Removal of the gall bladder and appendix by laparoscopy is now a common occurrence. Another important application of laparoscopy is in the field of gynecology and infertility. It is now possible to treat disorders like endometriosis, which is a common cause of infertility and also to document any other causes of infertility. Removal of the uterus and ovaries is also done by this technique along with surgery for ectopic pregnancy (condition in which pregnancy takes place in a place other than the uterine cavity).

Use of laparoscopy for the diagnosis of acute pain during pregnancy is safe and effective. In fact, one in 500 pregnant women will require surgery for conditions like gallstones, acute appendicitis or other surgical conditions and many studies have proved that laparoscopy improves maternal and fetal outcome.

Laparoscopy involves creating small holes in the abdomen after filling it up with CO2 and inserting the camera through one of these holes, instruments through other holes and operating while visualising on the monitor. The two major advantages as opposed to open surgery are illumination and magnification.

-Negligible postoperative pain, patients are can walk 2 hours after the surgery
-Speedy recovery, much faster than open surgery

The wonders of technology when applied to surgery continue to surprise the patients and doctors alike, but here they are all pleasant ones. The biggest reward for a surgeon is when a patient remains pain free and returns back to routine life as fast as a patient without any surgery.

Cancer cure may lie in the gut

A new study suggests that cure for cancer may be in our intestines.

An associate professor  said that if the gastrointestinal tract remains healthy and functioning, the chances of survival increase exponentially.

Recently, it was discovered a biological mechanism that preserves the gastrointestinal tracts in mice who were delivered lethal doses of chemotherapy.

The findings could revolutionize cancer therapy.

He emphasized that this had not yet been tested in humans, and right now there's no way to know if people will respond similarly.

"All tumours from different tissues and organs can be killed by high doses of chemotherapy and radiation, but the current challenge for treating the later-staged metastasised cancer is that you actually kill the host before you kill the tumour," he said.

"It's our belief that this could eventually cure later-staged metastasised cancer. People will not die from cancer, if our prediction is true.

"We cannot know this yet, but in mice it has shown promise. Years down the road, we may have a way to make humans tolerate lethal doses of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In this way, the later-staged, metastasised cancer can be eradicated by increased doses of chemotherapy and radiation," he added.

The lab found that when certain proteins bind with a specific molecule on intestinal stem cells, it revs intestinal stem cells into overdrive for intestinal regeneration and repair in mice.

Stem cells naturally heal damaged organs and tissues, but so-called "normal" amounts of stem cells in the intestine simply cannot keep up with the wreckage left behind by the lethal doses of chemotherapy and radiation required to successfully treat late-stage tumours.

However, the phalanx of extra stem cells protect the intestine and gastrointestinal tract, which allows the ingestion of nutrients so the body can perform other critical functions and the bacterial toxins in the intestine are prevented from entering the blood circulation, he said.

In the future, if the findings are tested in humans and show promise, these factors could give human cancer patients just enough of an extra edge to survive the stronger doses of chemotherapy and radiation, until the tumour or tumours are eradicated.

He stressed that even if the findings do show promise in humans, it could take a decade or longer before an application becomes available to use on people.

In the study, 50-to-75 percent of the mice treated with the molecule survived otherwise lethal doses of chemotherapy. All of the mice that did not receive the molecule died, he said.

Bile Resin Treats Type 2 Diabetes

Future treatment for type 2 diabetics comes from a most unlikely source: a resin in the gastro-intestinal tract. Published in the journal Diabetes, the study identifies colestimide, a resin produced by the body to help eliminate bile acids, as possible treatment for high blood sugar.

Researchers at Japan's Kinki University tested the effects of colestimide in laboratory mice with elevated blood glucose, finding that the resin helped significantly lower hyperglycemia. Colestimide is sold in supplement form under the brand name Cholebine. The study's authors called for further research involving human populations.
