Mobile app can help manage uncontrolled asthma

A mobile app can help manage uncontrolled asthma by measuring lung function and giving feedback in the form of automated and doctor-prescribed treatment recommendation, say researchers.
People suffering from uncontrolled asthma frequently experience breathing difficulties or asthma attacks and inadequate management and or correct use of medicine are common causes of this situation.

A study by researchers found that a treatment adjustment algorithm based on lung function and symptoms in a mobile phone can be an efficient tool in managing uncontrolled asthma.

For fuss-free measuring of lung function, the phone connects to a wireless spirometer and the app can register respiratory symptoms and provide visual feedback on treatment, said researchers, in a paper recently published.

The system called ' AsthmaTuner" analyses lung function and symptoms in accordance with asthma-care guidelines, said the research leader.

The users also receive a picture of the inhaler that is to be used and instructions on whether the medication is to be maintained, increased or decreased, he added.

AsthmaTuner enables the measuring of lung function via a wireless spirometer connected to a mobile-phone app.

The study comprised 77 uncontrolled asthma sufferers aged 6 onwards. Around half of these were children and adolescents.

We could see that asthma symptoms improved more with the digital tool than they did with traditional care. Adult patients who used the tool at least once a week also more often remembered to take their medicines, he said.

Roche launches Hemophilia A treatment drug in India

Drug firm Roche Wednesday said it has launched Emicizumab under the brand name Hemlibra in India for preventive treatment of Hemophilia A, an inherited disorder in which a person's blood does not clot properly.

Hemlibra is the first weekly subcutaneous prophylaxis injection shown to prevent or reduce the frequency of bleeding episodes and improve the quality of life, Roche said in a statement.

All current prophylactic treatment options for people with Hemophilia A with factor VIII inhibitors require intravenous infusions several times a week, it added.

"The introduction of Emicizumab (Hemlibra) is a significant milestone in the treatment of Hemophilia A in India and reaffirms our commitment to bring Roche's ground breaking medicines to patients in India as early as possible," said a spokesperson of the company.

This breakthrough medicine represents a completely new way to manage Hemophilia A and redefines the standard of care, she added.

The company, however, did not disclose the price at which it would be selling the drug in the country.
Hemlibra is approved by multiple regulatory authorities across the world and is now also approved and available in India, the statement said.

Hemophilia A is an inherited, serious disorder in which a person's blood does not clot properly, leading to an uncontrolled and often spontaneous bleeding.

Cancer: new DNA sequencing technique analyses tumours cell by cell to fight disease

A new DNA sequencing technique lets scientists track genetic errors in individual cancer cells. For the first time, they can reconstruct a tumour’s life history and understand how an error in a cell’s DNA led to the uncontrollable growth of a tumour. This new technology will help doctors understand how a particular cancer has evolved and personalise treatments for each patient, to make them more effective and successful.

We are made of billions of cells that work together to build every part of our body. Occasionally, one of these cells acquires an error in its genetic code and this error, or mutation, can sometimes make this abnormal single cell divide and grow faster than the healthy ones, causing a tumour to develop. During this process, cells can continue to evolve and accumulate many more mutations that make it more dangerous than the original one.

Previously, when researchers studied cancer, they used to take a piece of the tumour and analyse it as a whole. Without understanding the life history of each tumour, science could only give us an incomplete picture of the cancer, where the different cells are mixed and averaged, to get an idea of how dangerous the cancer was. But it didn’t tell us anything about how the tumour had evolved and what type of cells it was made of, making it hard for doctors to select the right treatment for each patient.

This is the reason many cancer treatments don’t work, and when they do, cancer sometimes regrows within a few months or years, coming back a lot more aggressive than the previous one and much more difficult to treat.

Seeing the whole picture

As the entire tumour couldn’t be beaten as a whole, five years ago, researchers started using a different strategy: divide and conquer. They began dividing the tumours into single cells and analysing each cancer cell separately to try and understand which types of cells made up each tumour.
But even with this advance, they still only had two main tools to analyse single cancer cells. One tool allowed them to read the genetic code of a single cell at a time, identifying which cells have genetic mutations. The other tool helped them understand which genes were active in each cancerous cell, and what their role in the cells was. However, neither of these tools revealed the whole picture. Using them, you could either get the genetic errors from each cell, or the genes that are active and functional – but not both. This made it impossible to understand which genes are activated as a result of genetic errors in each cell.

A team of researchers, developed a new single-cell sequencing technique that allowed them to see the whole picture. It lets scientists analyse the genetic errors that each cell in a tumour has accumulated while also understanding its gene activity and cell function. This will allow researchers to see in fine detail every aspect of the tumour.

In their latest study, they used this new technique, called TARGET-seq, to analyse many thousands of cells from 11 patients whose blood-making cells had become cancerous. Their analysis provided a detailed picture of the cell types that made up blood cancers. Thanks to its high resolution, they could reconstruct the complete life history of each tumour and identify the molecules that were active during the first steps of tumour development. They also found that cells that appeared healthy, as they didn’t have cancerous mutations, were behaving like malignant cells and activating abnormal genes because they were in a tumour environment.

Scientists are now using TARGET-seq to analyse different types of aggressive leukemias for which there are no effective treatments. They are hoping to understand how to eliminate the cells that started and sustained the tumour, to be able to completely eradicate them. In the future, we hope that this technique will be used by oncologists to determine the exact mixture of cancer cells that makes up each tumour and customise the right treatment for each patient.

Healing Properties Of Honey

Most of us think that honey is just another sweetening agent like sugar, molasses and so on. But, thankfully, it is much more than that. It is the only food that doesn't get spoiled even if it is not kept in the fridge !

Many do drink honey with lime and water and vouch that it has helped them to shed kilos ! Isn't it amazing that such simple ingredients are more powerful than drugs !

One cup of warm water, add 1 tablespoon ( tbsp) of honey, mix well. When you mix the density should be like blood plasma. If your cup is bigger, then add more honey to get the correct mixture.

1) Eliminates the mucus found in the lungs, especially beneficial for those suffering from cold and fever.

2) It prevents and removes parasites from the digestive system.

3)It works really well in cases of bronchitis , eases cold and improves the immune system.

4) Many people will experience a slight increase in their waistline after few days of using this natural remedy, but don't get worried. This has nothing to do with the body fat.
The increase in the waistline is the result of the swelling of the fecal sediments , and at the same time, they become softer. This is a process that lasts for a limited time and after it is finished your body will get back to its normal appearance.
5) It has strong antibacterial, anti-fungal and antiviral properties.
6) It removes all the toxin deposits from the body and the intestines.
7) People suffering from uncontrolled urination during the night will find this mixture helpful. Honey has the ability to absorb the water from the kidneys, which means that kidneys will have less work.
8) It makes your skin look younger, shinier and silkier.

When to consume the honey mixture

It should be consumed in the morning on an empty stomach in order to avoid any problems and to get the best results. Remember to drink this mixture very fast. This mixture can be had before retiring to bed also.

Spouses have strong influence on potential alcohol abuse risk in partners

Spouses with uncontrolled drinking problems have a “large and rapid” influence on the likelihood their partner will also be diagnosed with an alcohol use disorder, according to a long-term study of married couples in Sweden.

After a husband was first diagnosed with alcohol use disorder (AUD), his wife’s risk of a similar diagnosis immediately rose 14-fold compared to women whose husbands did not have that diagnosis, researchers found. But then her risk fell during the next couple of years to about four-fold. Similarly, husbands’ risk shot up nine-fold after a wife’s diagnosis, then declined to about three-fold.

It’s long been known that spouses tend to resemble each other in alcohol consumption and abuse, the study team said, but it hasn’t been clear whether that’s because people with similar habits seek each other out, or because partners exert a strong influence on one another.

When the researchers looked at whether people had alcohol use disorders before their first marriage, and what happened in second and third marriages, they found that one spouse experiencing the disorder strongly influences the other’s current risk.

“Marriage partners can have a very substantial and causal effect on each other’s risk for AUD. In treating one married individual, you need to take their spouse into account,” lead author said.

About 15 million adults in the United States age 18 or older have alcohol use disorder, according to the national statistics. An estimated 88,000 people with AUD die from alcohol-related causes annually, including liver damage, certain cancers and car crashes.

For the new analysis, which is the largest and first to look at risk over time and across multiple marriages, the team examined data collected from Swedish medical, criminal and pharmacy registries of residents born between 1960 and 1990. They identified 8,562 couples in first marriages with no history of alcohol use disorder in either partner prior to marriage and one spouse developing the disorder during the marriage.

The research team also studied 4,891 individuals with multiple marriages whose first spouse had no alcohol use disorder and second spouse did, or the reverse. When individuals transitioned from a first marriage to a spouse with an alcohol use disorder to a second marriage to a partner without the disorder, their risk for developing the disorder themselves was halved.

However, after a first marriage to a spouse without an alcohol use disorder, individuals who married a partner with the disorder raised their own risk seven- to nine-fold. A similar, but weaker risk increase was seen in third marriages with these combinations.

“The finding that marriage to a non-AUD spouse can be somewhat protective for individuals who subsequently marry spouses with AUD in one spouse and the risk of developing AUD in the other spouse is novel,” a project officer said.

A scientist, who was not involved in the research, also said part of what makes this study unique is the focus on the temporal relationship between the development of AUD in one spouse and the risk of developing AUD in the other spouse.

Among the study’s limitations is that it is based on registry data and likely reflects a higher proportion of individuals more severely affected by medical and legal problems than other prior studies, the authors note.

Past research among twins and children of alcoholics has shown that genetic factors do influence alcoholism, they add. The current study indicates, though, that alcohol use disorders shared by married couples are not just a result of people seeking out mates who are similar to them in this regard, the authors write.

“Additional research can help to illuminate the interplay of social and genetic factors on risk and protective mechanisms of marital status on development of AUD across the lifespan, and the impact of these factors on couples’ children as well,” the Prof. said.

Link between psoriasis and hypertension found

Patients with severe psoriasis are more likely to have uncontrolled hypertension, according to a new research.

Researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania through a cross-sectional study using information collected from a medical records database, provided evidence of a strong link between psoriasis and hypertension.

"Over the last several years, studies have shown that psoriasis, specifically severe psoriasis, is an independent risk factor for a variety of comorbidities, putting patients suffering with this common skin disease at an increased risk for other conditions such as heart attack and stroke," said Junko Takeshita, co-first author on the study.

"Knowing that psoriasis is tied to other health conditions, it's vital that we have a better understanding of the systemic effects it has on other areas of the body so that we can more closely monitor these patients and provide better and preventative care," said Takeshita, clinical instructor in the department of Dermatology at Penn Medicine.

Defining uncontrolled hypertension as blood pressure measured as at least 140/90, the researchers found a clear relationship between psoriasis and uncontrolled hypertension in patients with a confirmed diagnosis of psoriasis.

Additional finding indicated there is a significant dose-response relationship, meaning that the likelihood of uncontrolled hypertension increases with greater psoriasis severity.

Results of the study found that the patients with the highest risk of having uncontrolled blood pressure, are those with moderate to severe psoriasis, which is defined as having at least three per cent of one's body surface affected by the disease.

Takeshita and colleagues examined data from a random sample of psoriasis patients included in The Health Improvement Network (THIN), an electronic medical database based in the UK that collects demographic, diagnostic, treatment, and laboratory information from a broad representative sample of the UK population.

The researchers concentrated on a specific group within the THIN database called the Incident Health Outcomes and Psoriasis Events (iHOPE) cohort, a random sample of about 9,000 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of psoriasis and disease severity classified by their general practitioners using objective measures, specifically body surface area involvement.

The study is published in the journal JAMA Dermatology.

Now, 'paper-clip' implant to treat high blood pressure

A novel 'paper-clip' implant that can tackle resistant high blood pressure has been developed.

The implant, called the ROX coupler, can help in treatment-resistant hypertension, or resistant high blood pressure, a condition in which blood pressure remains high despite treatment with anti-hypertensive medications.

The ROX coupler is a small metal stent made of nitinol which when deployed, acts like a 'paper-clip' joining an artery and a vein together in the groin area.

This allows blood to flow between the high pressure artery and the low pressure vein. The Coupler is inserted and put in place via key-hole procedure at the groin under local anaesthesia.

Doctors used the device successfully on a 56-year-old male patient during an operation on September 16.

"We carried out this procedure on our first patient, a 56 year old male,  which went extremely well," said Professor  Cardiac Electrophysiology.

"After the initial preparation, it took me and my team just over an hour to put the implant in place. Almost immediately the patient's blood pressure went down to more acceptable levels which we anticipate to further improve with time," the Dr. said.

The Dr. termed results from the pilot study on the ROX coupler as "promising".

"Results from the pilot study already done on this new technology look promising. There is a very early response with a reduction in blood pressure in resistant hypertensive patients which appears to be maintained in medium term at least," he said.

"The procedure is remarkable. I know it is still early days but I have already seen a significant reduction in my blood pressure points. I am amazed!" said the male patient.

"Uncontrolled hypertension can lead to many other medical conditions with dire consequences. Patients with resistant hypertension have blood pressure way above normally accepted levels despite multiple medications in combination," Dr. said.

"New forms of effective treatment are always welcome and that is the reason why we are conducting properly designed trials to assess the efficacy," he said.
