8 Pressure Points For Kidneys

The kidneys are a vital part of the human body. Most people know that their main function is to remove waste products and excess fluid through urine, but they also produce and secrete a number of hormones. Therefore, when something is wrong with the kidneys, the problem will exhibit itself in more ways than just through the urine. Of course - if you feel there is a problem in even just one of the kidneys, it is extremely important to seek medical help. Until you do so, it’s handy to know that there are several ways to ease kidney-related pain by applying pressure on certain points in the body.

This list contains 8 anatomical points of pressure, which you can massage depending on the ailment you suffer from. It is recommended to repeat the exercise twice a day.
Please note, this is NOT to be done instead of a doctor’s appointment but only to ease symptoms in the meantime. Pregnant women should AVOID massaging pressure points altogether.

How to Reduce Kidney Related Symptoms Quickly and Easily

To Treat Difficulty Passing Urine

Urinary retention can occur for a number of causes, such as nerve problems, certain medications, or a blockage resulting from benign prostatic hyperplasia in men. To ease the symptoms while waiting to receive medical treatment, you may massage these 2 pressure points:

1. LV8

LV8

This pressure point is located on the inner part of your knee joint. Massaging it may also ease pain in the lower abdomen, excessive sweating, insomnia, depression, and skin conditions, such as psoriasis.

2. UB39

UB39
This pressure point is found on the outer frontal part of the knee. Massaging it not only reduces difficulty in passing urine but also reduces stiffness in the lower back and frequent muscle spasms in the legs and palms.

To Treat Frequency in Passing Urine

If you have to excuse yourself between 4-10 times a day in order to visit the bathroom - that is completely normal. If it happens more frequently than that, however, it might be best to consult your GP. Frequent urination could point to a UTI, kidney stones, or ovarian cysts. Another likely culprit could be prescription drugs you take on a daily basis. While waiting to receive medical treatment, you may massage these 2 pressure points:

3. CV4

CV4 To Treat Frequency in Passing Urine
This point is located in the center of your pelvis, about 7 cm (3 inches) underneath your belly button. Massaging it may reduce the frequency of your body feeling the need to urinate, as well as help with irregular periods and diarrhea.

4. K3

K3 To Treat Frequency in Passing Urine
This point can be found in the dent that’s right above the inner ankle bone. Massaging it can balance the bladder’s need to empty itself as well as ease toothaches, asthma attacks, prevent vomiting and even prevent frostbite.

To Treat Kidney Infections

Pyelonephritis is an inflammation of the kidneys caused by a bacterial infection (typically Escherichia coli). Symptoms include high fever, pain in passing urine, and high resting heart rate. If you suffer from these combined symptoms, it is strongly recommended to seek medical treatment. In the meantime, you may massage these 2 pressure points:

5. LU7

To Treat Kidney Infections: LU7
This point is underneath your wrist. You can measure the exact distance using your thumb. Massaging it may ease kidney inflammation symptoms, migraines, a sore throat and wrist pains.

6. SP10

To Treat Kidney Infections: SP10
To find this point, bend your knees and place your palm on the inner part of your knee. You should feel a bump - the pressure point is located three horizontal fingers above the end of the bump, towards the inner thigh. Massaging it helps ease kidney inflammation symptoms, period pain, acne breakouts and it may prevent problems with the thyroid gland.

To Ease Kidney Failure

Kidney failure is a condition in which the kidneys function at less than 15% of normal, and the blood going through them is not filtered properly. The symptoms may include fatigue, loss of appetite and vomiting. Those suffering from complications of severe cases may also experience high blood pressure and high heart rates. Not all symptoms always appear at once, but if you notice any of them, seek medical help immediately. In the meantime, you can massage these 2 pressure points:

7. SP9

To Treat Kidney Failure SP9
This point is located on the inner part of your leg, right below the knee - you can bend the knee to help you find, it but massage it with your leg straight. Massaging SP9 may improve the kidney’s ability to filter and remove waste, and get rid of excess fluid. Another function of this pressure point is to improve libido.

8. LV5

To Treat Kidney Failure LV5
To find this pressure point, place 7 horizontal fingers over the inner ankle bone (tibia). Other than improving the kidney's ability to filter blood, massaging it may also help with chronic fatigue, strengthen the immune system, and ease the side effects of chemotherapy for cancer patients.

Don’t ignore UTI, it can lead to kidney infection

Infection in one’s urinary tract can result in serious infection and could be life-threatening. In our body, the urinary system is responsible for making urine. The urinary tract comprises of two kidneys, ureters, the bladder with urethra.

Urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs when bacteria enters into urinary system and multiply. If the infection is not tackled at the right time,  it allows the bacteria to travel up to the kidney and result in a serious type of infection called pyelonephritis.

Symptoms of UTI
  • Urgency to urinate
  • Urinary frequency
  • A sense of burning during urination
  • Aching feeling, pressure or lower abdominal pain
  • Blood-tinged or cloudy urine
  • Strong odour in the urine
UTIs necessarily do not lead to kidney damage. However, if the problem is left untreated, then the infection might spread. A kidney infection does require medical or surgical attention and if unattended, then can damage the kidneys permanently. The bacteria can sometimes spread to the bloodstream and cause a life-threatening sepsis.
Risk Factors
  • Females are more likely to catch this infection as their urethra is shorter than it is in men. This makes it easier for the bacteria to travel to the bladder. Pregnant women are at an even higher risk.
  •  A blockage in the urinary tract which can slow the flow of urine or reduces the bladder’s ability to empty can lead to the infection. The blockage can be due to a kidney stone, some abnormality in the structure of the urinary tract or an enlarged prostate gland (in men).
  • A weakened immune system also increases the chance due to health history or medications.
  • Any damage to the nerves around the bladder.
  • Using a urinary catheter, a tube used to drain urine from the bladder usually when a person is confined to bed due to sickness or surgeries.
  • If a person suffers from a condition which causes the urine to flow in the wrong direction back into ureters and kidneys.
  • Complications involved in a kidney infection:
  • Kidney scarring which can further result in chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure, and kidney failure.
  • Septicemia or blood poisoning due to bacteria spread into the bloodstream from kidney infection.
  • Pregnancy complications can occur if the kidney is infected, especially the risk of delivering low birth weight babies.
Kidney infection that results from UTI is indeed a serious concern and needs proper medical attention at the earliest. However, since prevention is always better than cure, here are some lifestyle changes:
Consume enough fluids, as it helps in removing bacteria from the body while urinating.
  • Try not to delay urination when you have the urge to.
  • Clean the vaginal introitus before and after sexual intercourse.
  • Empty the bladder right after the intercourse as that also helps in clearing bacteria from the urethra.
  • Be careful while wiping. Wiping from front to back after urinating and post bowel movement also prevents the spread of bacteria to urethra.
  • Do not use products such as deodorant sprays in your genital area.

Exercise may prevent and control cancer

Exercising daily not only prevents different forms of heart disease but is also highly beneficial for the people living with and beyond cancer, suggests a study. To spread the message, an initiative called -- Moving Through Cancer -- led by Kathryn Schmitz, professor of Public Health Sciences at Penn State College of Medicine, and an international team of health practitioners and researchers -- has been started.

In a paper published in 'CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians', Schmitz and her fellow researchers outline new exercise recommendations for people living with and beyond cancer. "With more than 43 million cancer survivors worldwide, we have a growing need to address the unique health issues facing people living with and beyond cancer and better understand how exercise may help prevent and control cancer," said Schmitz, who is also a member of the Penn State Cancer Institute.

"This esteemed, multidisciplinary group of leaders at the forefront of exercise oncology aimed to translate the latest scientific evidence into practical recommendations for clinicians and the public and to create global impact through a unified voice," added Schmitz.

According to the researchers, exercise is important for cancer prevention and can lower the risk of developing colon, breast, endometrial, kidney, bladder, esophagus and stomach cancers. Exercise during and after cancer treatment can help improve fatigue, anxiety, depression, physical function, and quality of life, and can also help improve survival after a breast, colon or prostate cancer diagnosis.

Depending on the patient's activity levels and abilities, the researchers generally recommend 30 minutes of moderately intense aerobic exercise three times a week and 20 to 30 minutes of resistance exercise twice a week. But, Schmitz said health care professionals can also customise exercise prescriptions to individual patients.

"Through our research, we've reached a point where we can give specific FITT exercise prescriptions -- which means frequency, intensity, time and type -- for specific outcomes like quality of life, fatigue, pain, and others," Schmitz said. "For example, if we're seeing a head and neck cancer patient with a specific set of symptoms, we could give them an exercise prescription personalised to them."

The recommendations are one result of a roundtable of experts formed by Schmitz and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) to review the latest scientific evidence and offer recommendations about the benefits of exercise for prevention, treatment, recovery and improved survival for people living with and beyond cancer.

Schmitz said the second piece of the initiative is resources and programs to help get people with and beyond cancer moving. The Moving Through Cancer website has an exercise program registry that can help patients, families, health care providers and others find programs near them.

The final piece is policy, Schmitz said, which could be used to increase the likelihood that health care professionals will talk to their patients about exercise and that patients will be adequately referred to as they move through cancer.

Study Establishes Link Between Air Pollution and Children's Mental Health

Researchers have found that short-term exposure to ambient air pollution was associated with exacerbations of psychiatric disorders in children one to two days later.

The study, also found that children living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods may be more susceptible to the effects of air pollution compared to other children, especially for disorders related to anxiety and suicidal.

The fact that children living in high poverty neighbourhoods experienced greater health effects of air pollution could mean that pollutant and neighbourhood stressors can have synergistic effects on psychiatric symptom severity and frequency," said study lead author.

Three new studies from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, in collaboration with researchers at the University of Cincinnati, highlight the relationship between air pollution and mental health in children.

Two other Cincinnati Children's studies also link air pollution to children's mental health and found an association between recent high traffic related air pollution (TRAP) exposure and higher generalised anxiety.

The study is believed to be the first to use neuroimaging to link TRAP exposure, metabolic disturbances in the brain, and generalized anxiety symptoms among otherwise healthy children.

The researchers found higher myoinositol concentrations in the brain - a marker of the brain's neuroinflammatory response to TRAP.

The other study found that exposure to TRAP during early life and across childhood was significantly associated with self-reported depression and anxiety symptoms in 12 year olds.

Collectively, these studies contribute to the growing body of evidence that exposure to air pollution during early life and childhood may contribute to depression, anxiety and other mental health problems in adolescence, said the researchers.

Roche launches Hemophilia A treatment drug in India

Drug firm Roche Wednesday said it has launched Emicizumab under the brand name Hemlibra in India for preventive treatment of Hemophilia A, an inherited disorder in which a person's blood does not clot properly.

Hemlibra is the first weekly subcutaneous prophylaxis injection shown to prevent or reduce the frequency of bleeding episodes and improve the quality of life, Roche said in a statement.

All current prophylactic treatment options for people with Hemophilia A with factor VIII inhibitors require intravenous infusions several times a week, it added.

"The introduction of Emicizumab (Hemlibra) is a significant milestone in the treatment of Hemophilia A in India and reaffirms our commitment to bring Roche's ground breaking medicines to patients in India as early as possible," said a spokesperson of the company.

This breakthrough medicine represents a completely new way to manage Hemophilia A and redefines the standard of care, she added.

The company, however, did not disclose the price at which it would be selling the drug in the country.
Hemlibra is approved by multiple regulatory authorities across the world and is now also approved and available in India, the statement said.

Hemophilia A is an inherited, serious disorder in which a person's blood does not clot properly, leading to an uncontrolled and often spontaneous bleeding.

Two or more headaches in a week warrant a doctor's visit

It has come to light that people take the effects of headache very lightly.

According to a study by a primary-care physician , people's first instinct is to simply pop a paracetamol, drink water, and carry on with the day.

However, the Dr. has urged people to be more wary of headaches as multiple headaches could be a sign of something far more serious than simply an exhausting or disturbing day.

The Dr. found that a shocking number of people tend to ignore their headaches, bear the pain and simply grin, despite knowing how debilitating it could be.

He urged people to pay closer attention as frequent headaches could indicate that an individual is suffering from conditions such as brain tumours or aneurysms.

The Dr. was quoted as saying, "You don't want people to overreact, but you also don't want them to under-react".

According to doctors, there are three common types of headaches- tension headaches, sinus headaches, and migraines.

Noting, how frequently a person tends to be struck down by a headache is another key. Frequency could also indicate the severity to seek medical advice.

The Dr. pointed that if a person has more than two headaches a week for longer than a fortnight, then it is of utmost importance to get checked by a doctor.

By analyzing and noting down the frequency of headaches, people might be able to pinpoint their triggers.

It could include things like specific food or drink, being on your period, an insufficient amount of sleep, insufficient water intake and such.

Also, pinpointing the exact point of origin of your headache could come in handy for the assessment.

The Dr. explained that tension headaches start at the back of your head and radiate up and over the crown.

Sinus headaches, according to him, usually affect the face around eyes. Addition of nausea and blind spots to a splitting headache attribute to migraines.

Other symptoms, such as nausea, numbness, and memory problems, which we often tend to ignore could point towards some serious underlying condition.
