Do you hold your pee? 4 reasons why you need to STOP doing it

Tell us if this sounds familiar. You are stuck in an important board meeting, in a means of public transport or there is simply no restroom in sight. You keep postponing your trip to the loo till the time your bladder is ready to explode and you cannot help but do the pee dance. While it is normal for most people to resist the urge to urinate from time to tome, it spells a big trouble if you begin to hold your pee in regularly.

A healthy human bladder can hold between 400 to 500 millilitres of urine or about 2 cups before it reaches capacity. While holding your pee isn’t generally dangerous as the bladder is an expandable organ, it is not advisable to make it a habit.

What happens when you hold your urine regularly
Yes, holding your urine for too long can wreak some serious damage to your bladder. This is because holding your pee for too long can lead to weakened bladder muscles. Some of the dangers of resisting the urge to pee for a really long time regularly are:

Urinary incontinence
It is important to understand that if you are not urinating regularly, your bladder can start to atrophy or weaken. As a result, you may develop urinary incontinence. It leads to involuntary leakage of urine.

UTIs (Urinary Tract Infection)

If you have made it a habit to hold the pee in regularly, it can lead to urinary tract infections as the bacteria can begin to multiply. You are especially vulnerable if you have a history of UTIs and getting affected by the same very frequently. Your risk of getting UTI is also high if you do not drink enough water.

If you have a tendency of holding your pee, check for the following signs and symptoms of UTI:

A sharp burning sensation when you pee

Off-coloured urine or bloody urine

Pain in the lower abdomen

foul smelling urine

Stretching of the bladder

Yes, you read that right. When you are in habit of holding your pee in for a longer duration of time, it may cause your bladder to stretch. When you develop an enlarged bladder, you may experience difficulty in peeing and a constant urge to urinate. You may also develop urinary incontinence.

Urinary retention

If you not urinating regularly and are retaining urine, it can also lead to urinary retention. It is a condition in which your bladder is not able to empty completely due to blockage of the free flow of urine through the bladder and urethra.

How often should you pee?

The frequency of visiting the loo actually varies from person to person. While a healthy person actually pees around four to ten times a day, the average is six to eight times in one day.

8 Health Benefits of Blueberries

If you love the delicious and tangy taste of blueberries, then you're going to love them a whole lot more after reading about all of their incredibly potent health benefits. Here are 8 reasons why blueberries truly deserve to be known as superfoods:
 image.png
1. They Contain Anti-Aging Properties
The blue pigment that blueberries contain, known as anthocyanin, is packed with a whole host of antioxidants that have been proven to help delay the aging process. Among the many health issues that blueberries can delay are age spots, wrinkles, hair loss, cataracts, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and osteoporosis.

2. They Can Improve Brain Functioning
Since blueberries are packed full of nutrients and antioxidants, they can help to prevent many neurotic disorders by preventing the death or degeneration of neurons. They also help to restore the health of the central nervous system, while healing damaged brain tissue, and boosting your memory.

3. They Promote Digestion
The fiber that blueberries contain will help keep you regular and prevent constipation. Additionally, the copper, fructose, sodium, and vitamins that they contain will stimulate the release of the correct type of digestive and gastric juices to allow food to pass through your gastrointestinal system with ease.

4. They Treat Urinary Tract Infections
Blueberries contain a large, polymer-like compound which has been found to inhibit the growth of certain types of bacteria, such as the ones which cause urinary tract infections. These heavy molecules prevent and treat such infections by scrubbing the bacteria off of the tract's walls as they pass through your system.

5. They Prevent Cancer
Blueberries contain plenty of components that can help prevent the onset of cancer, such as ellagic acid and pterostilbene, which has been found to effectively prevent liver and colon cancer. The vitamin C and copper that blueberries contain also do wonders for both the prevention and cure of many types of cancer.

6. They Do Wonders For Your Eyes
Due to the many antioxidant properties found within blueberries, they can prevent or delay practically all age-related ocular problems, such as cataracts, macular degeneration, myopia and hypermetropia, infections, and dryness.

7. They Boost Your Immunity
By getting rid of free radicals and fortifying your body with essential nutrients, blueberries end up preventing infections by supplying a boost to your immune system. This will leave you far less likely to catch many of the terrible diseases which are spread by viruses and bacteria.

8. They Cure Heart Disease
By means of their antioxidants, high fiber content, and their ability to nullify 'bad cholesterol,' blueberries are able to strengthen the heart's muscles. This is why they make a perfect dietary supplement for anyone who's suffering from heart disease.

Don’t ignore UTI, it can lead to kidney infection

Infection in one’s urinary tract can result in serious infection and could be life-threatening. In our body, the urinary system is responsible for making urine. The urinary tract comprises of two kidneys, ureters, the bladder with urethra.

Urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs when bacteria enters into urinary system and multiply. If the infection is not tackled at the right time,  it allows the bacteria to travel up to the kidney and result in a serious type of infection called pyelonephritis.

Symptoms of UTI
  • Urgency to urinate
  • Urinary frequency
  • A sense of burning during urination
  • Aching feeling, pressure or lower abdominal pain
  • Blood-tinged or cloudy urine
  • Strong odour in the urine
UTIs necessarily do not lead to kidney damage. However, if the problem is left untreated, then the infection might spread. A kidney infection does require medical or surgical attention and if unattended, then can damage the kidneys permanently. The bacteria can sometimes spread to the bloodstream and cause a life-threatening sepsis.
Risk Factors
  • Females are more likely to catch this infection as their urethra is shorter than it is in men. This makes it easier for the bacteria to travel to the bladder. Pregnant women are at an even higher risk.
  •  A blockage in the urinary tract which can slow the flow of urine or reduces the bladder’s ability to empty can lead to the infection. The blockage can be due to a kidney stone, some abnormality in the structure of the urinary tract or an enlarged prostate gland (in men).
  • A weakened immune system also increases the chance due to health history or medications.
  • Any damage to the nerves around the bladder.
  • Using a urinary catheter, a tube used to drain urine from the bladder usually when a person is confined to bed due to sickness or surgeries.
  • If a person suffers from a condition which causes the urine to flow in the wrong direction back into ureters and kidneys.
  • Complications involved in a kidney infection:
  • Kidney scarring which can further result in chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure, and kidney failure.
  • Septicemia or blood poisoning due to bacteria spread into the bloodstream from kidney infection.
  • Pregnancy complications can occur if the kidney is infected, especially the risk of delivering low birth weight babies.
Kidney infection that results from UTI is indeed a serious concern and needs proper medical attention at the earliest. However, since prevention is always better than cure, here are some lifestyle changes:
Consume enough fluids, as it helps in removing bacteria from the body while urinating.
  • Try not to delay urination when you have the urge to.
  • Clean the vaginal introitus before and after sexual intercourse.
  • Empty the bladder right after the intercourse as that also helps in clearing bacteria from the urethra.
  • Be careful while wiping. Wiping from front to back after urinating and post bowel movement also prevents the spread of bacteria to urethra.
  • Do not use products such as deodorant sprays in your genital area.

Cranberries may help combat superbugs

Cranberry extracts can make disease-causing bacteria more sensitive to lower doses of antibiotics that may help counter the global threat of superbugs, according to a study.

The spread of antibiotic resistance worldwide is undermining decades of progress in fighting bacterial infections.

Due to the overuse of antibiotics in medicine and agriculture, we're on the cusp of returning to a pre-antibiotic era in which minor infections can once again become deadly.

Countering the fall in antibiotic efficacy by improving the effectiveness of currently available antibiotics is a crucial goal, according to researchers.

Cranberries are highly sought after for their tangy taste and the antioxidants they contain.

The study provides evidence that they could also help in the fight against bacteria.

When treated with molecules derived from cranberries, pathogenic bacteria becomes more sensitive to lower doses of antibiotics and prevent resistance to the antibiotics.

Given the popular belief that drinking cranberry juice is helpful against urinary tract infections, the researchers sought to find out more about the berry's molecular properties by treating various bacteria with a cranberry extract.

The bacteria selected for the study were those responsible for UTI, pneumonia and gastroenteritis ( Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli).

Normally when we treat bacteria with an antibiotic in the lab, the bacteria eventually acquire resistance over time, said the lead author.

But, when we simultaneously treated the bacteria with an antibiotic and the cranberry extract, no resistance developed. We were very surprised by this, and we see it as an important opportunity, said the author.

Analyses showed that the cranberry extract increases bacterial sensitivity to antibiotics by acting in 2 ways.

First, it makes the bacterial cell wall more permeable to the antibiotic and 2nd, it interferes with the mechanism used by the bacteria to pump out the antibiotic.

Consequently, the antibiotic penetrates more easily, and the bacteria have a harder time getting rid of it, which explains why the drug is effective at lower doses.

The activity is generated by molecules called proanthocyanidins. There are several different kinds of proanthocyanidins, and they may work together to deliver this outcome. We'll need to do more research to determine which ones are most active in synergy with the antibiotic, said a Prof.

After confirming the activity of the cranberry molecules on bacterial culture, the researchers tested to determine whether the pattern persisted in a preliminary animal model-infected insects.

Since the synergistic effect of the extract and the antibiotic was also observed in the insects, further experiments will be conducted to clearly identify the active molecules.

If the results are confirmed in animals, certain classes of antibiotics to high levels of resistance could be made useful again by using cranberry extract to boost their potential.

2 Unusual uses of Cranberry

When people used to ask me what you do with cranberry, all I knew was make pickle ! After some years, I came to know that cranberry is very good to fight Urinary Tract Infections (UTI). In some countries, you do get cranberry capsules or as tablets, or else drink cranberry juice which is easily available in most stores. Of course, nothing better than eating them in their natural form, as simple pickle. Sadly, it is seasonal. When I lived in the north of India, it was easily available during autumn months. Having moved to the southern part of the country, sadly, I've not seen it in the shops here. Or may be, as we live in the outskirts, miss it when we go shopping !

Cranberry juice has been found to lower blood pressure. A study, found that people who drank low-calorie cranberry juice for two months saw an average drop of three points in blood pressure. It was also found that a group who drank a placebo beverage had no change in their BP numbers. Furthermore, the antioxidants in cranberries have been linked to lower blood pressure in other research too.

Common causes of back pain

Back pain is something that affects all of us at some stage in our lives, and there are a number of things that could be the cause. However, it is notoriously tricky to determine what this cause is. Therefore, let us take a look at 5 common causes of back pain.

Sudden back pain can be caused by a number of things, but determining what is causing it, can be tricky.
Let us see what can be the potential causes of back pain-
1) You're stressed out- Mental and emotional stress can manifest itself on a psychological level. If you've been feeling run down over a long period of time,  muscle tension could lead to aches and spasms.
Stress triggered back pain crops up in the neck and shoulder region, as well as in the lower back.
Remedy- relaxation techniques, like deep breathing, inhale slowly to the count of 4, hold your breath for another count of 4 and exhale for a count of 4.

2) You don\t pay much attention to what you eat.- According to a study, 31 % of women and 25 % of men, who suffered from back pain also had gastrointestinal issues, including abdominal pain and food intolerance. But what is the connection between the back pain and nutrition? The main culprit here is inflammation. Foods that are high in fat and sugar cause inflammation throughout the body, including the lower back.
Remedy- try cutting back on sugar and caffeine. Eat clean ,whole foods instead of processed foods and always include a protein rich food in your meals, such as meat or beans, whole grains such as brown rice  or vegetables.

3) You sit down all day- One of the most detrimental things you can do to your health is to sit down all day, as your muscles get used to that position, causing them to tighten up.
Remedy- reducing the effect of sitting induced muscle stiffness and tightness by stretching your calves, hamstrings and glutes when you wake up. When these muscles begin to tighten, the lower back suffers. Also aim for a quick stretch midday and before bed.

4) You're dehydrated- Your spine is made up of 33 vertebrae, between each disk is a jelly like substance made up of 90 % water. In order to keep that cushioning intact, your body needs a steady stream of fluid.
When your body is dehydrated, these disks become flatter and less cushiony, which can lead to pain..
Remedy- A good way to know if you;re drinking enough water, is to look at the colour of your urine. It should be clear or light yellow. If it is dark yellow, grab a glass of water.

5) You've an urinary tract infection- A urinary tract infection is often accompanied by pain in the lower and upper back, or sharp pains along the side. Back pain often indicates that a urinary tract infection has spread to the kidneys.
Remedy- Classic UTI symptoms include a persistent urge to urinate or pain during urination. So, visit a doctor immediately, if you've these symptoms.
