A 27-Year Study Says 1 Thing Is Key to Happiness and Longevity in Work and Life

In today’s world, work and life are intertwined beyond separability. We’d love to work longer, more productively, with more passion, and live that way too. Which is why a study published in May 2019 caught my eye.

The study was published by a team of University of Michigan researchers. The team analyzed data from the 27-year-old Health and Retirement Study (a U.S.-based, nationally representative well-being study) and found that one thing led to people living longer.

That one thing is inescapably interwoven with happiness, fulfillment, and maximum productivity at work.

Working and living with a sense of purpose and meaning.

The researchers found that those who had meaning and a sense of purpose (as measured by answers to questions from well-being self-assessments) lived longer lives than those who'd self-reported little to no sense of purpose and meaning.

Other University of Michigan research (2010) clearly shows that working with a sense of purpose and meaning leads to far greater engagement, motivation, productivity, and retention.

Purpose is the profound “Why?” Having it creates a sense of mission to do something worthy. It’s your significant “yet-to-do” in life. Purpose integrates who you are with what you do. It inspires us to renew our commitments and stretch further to manifest it, which is why having a sense of purpose in your work is so powerful.

So the case for working and living with a sense of purpose is crystal clear. But how to enable that?

One word: introspection.

In my book Make It Matter, I shared a set of introspective questions, the answers to which can help you identify your work and life purpose. I’ll share a selection of those questions here. To unlock your purpose, consider each of the following:

1. What are your superpowers?

Don’t be modest. You know what you’re really good at. How can you leverage that strength, like a superhero, to do good for the world? When you choose to use that strength towards a purpose, something bigger than yourself, it elevates to superpower status.

2. What are your values and beliefs?

What do you most strongly believe in--to the extent it helps guide your everyday actions? Staying true to those non-negotiable values is one of the simplest, most direct ways I encourage people to work and live with a sense of purpose.

And when people at work see you unswervingly living your values, even in times of adversity, it’s downright inspiring.

3. What would you do for free?

Pay attention to what you’re doing when you lose track of time. What do you daydream about? Those things you get absorbed in can be signals of something you were meant to do and that if you pursued further would bring profound meaning.

4. What have been your happiest moments?

What were you specifically doing in those moments and what about them brought you such joy? Look for themes. The common threads can provide clues as to what your purpose might be.

5. What have you learned from career misfires and triumphs?

Wrong turns in your career, while also being valuable learning experiences, help you bring the contrasting triumphs into focus. Reflect on what was happening during both misfires that brought pain and victories that brought joy. Who were you in those times? What did you excel or flounder at? Clues to your purpose lie within.

6. What deed needs doing?

What is your cause? What problem needs solving? What does the world need that you're well suited to provide? Note the higher-order, bigger-than-you, nature of each of these questions. Our purpose often feeds something greater than ourselves.

7. What would co-workers miss if you weren't there?

This speaks to those inspiring, magnetic characteristics you have that others are drawn to and well-served by. What would be missed could be telltale signs of what you can perpetuate and accentuate in service of your purpose.

8. What would people say you were meant to do?

What characteristic would others feel compelled to speak about in your absence? What have others said about your talents? Have you ever heard the phrase, “Wow, you could be a ______”? Still more clues on the path to purpose.

So be purposeful about discovering, articulating, and living and working with purpose. Lots of things will be longer (and deeper)--your work, life, happiness, and fulfillment.

Do you hold your pee? 4 reasons why you need to STOP doing it

Tell us if this sounds familiar. You are stuck in an important board meeting, in a means of public transport or there is simply no restroom in sight. You keep postponing your trip to the loo till the time your bladder is ready to explode and you cannot help but do the pee dance. While it is normal for most people to resist the urge to urinate from time to tome, it spells a big trouble if you begin to hold your pee in regularly.

A healthy human bladder can hold between 400 to 500 millilitres of urine or about 2 cups before it reaches capacity. While holding your pee isn’t generally dangerous as the bladder is an expandable organ, it is not advisable to make it a habit.

What happens when you hold your urine regularly
Yes, holding your urine for too long can wreak some serious damage to your bladder. This is because holding your pee for too long can lead to weakened bladder muscles. Some of the dangers of resisting the urge to pee for a really long time regularly are:

Urinary incontinence
It is important to understand that if you are not urinating regularly, your bladder can start to atrophy or weaken. As a result, you may develop urinary incontinence. It leads to involuntary leakage of urine.

UTIs (Urinary Tract Infection)

If you have made it a habit to hold the pee in regularly, it can lead to urinary tract infections as the bacteria can begin to multiply. You are especially vulnerable if you have a history of UTIs and getting affected by the same very frequently. Your risk of getting UTI is also high if you do not drink enough water.

If you have a tendency of holding your pee, check for the following signs and symptoms of UTI:

A sharp burning sensation when you pee

Off-coloured urine or bloody urine

Pain in the lower abdomen

foul smelling urine

Stretching of the bladder

Yes, you read that right. When you are in habit of holding your pee in for a longer duration of time, it may cause your bladder to stretch. When you develop an enlarged bladder, you may experience difficulty in peeing and a constant urge to urinate. You may also develop urinary incontinence.

Urinary retention

If you not urinating regularly and are retaining urine, it can also lead to urinary retention. It is a condition in which your bladder is not able to empty completely due to blockage of the free flow of urine through the bladder and urethra.

How often should you pee?

The frequency of visiting the loo actually varies from person to person. While a healthy person actually pees around four to ten times a day, the average is six to eight times in one day.

8 Pressure Points That Ease Urinary and Kidney Problems

Kidneys are thought to be the most active organ in the urinary system, and every day they filter out about 180 liters of blood to remove infections and toxins that are present in our bodies. However, this isn’t their only function, because they also secrete different hormones. Therefore, when there is a problem with the kidneys, it isn’t only expressed in the urine but in a variety of other ways depending on the problem, and although we have two of them - both are very important and should be checked by a doctor if you ever suspect a problem related to them. Until you receive the correct treatment, a kidney problem can be very uncomfortable for those who suffer from it, but common kidney and urinary problems can be alleviated by applying pressure to various points throughout the body. Here are 8 points, two for each common problem, and if you suffer from one of the following problems, you should massage the two points that are related to it every day in order to alleviate the problem till you can see a doctor.
Please Note: Massaging these pressure points isn’t recommended for pregnant women. Furthermore, we want to emphasize that massaging these points will not solve or cure the problem, rather they only serve to alleviate its symptoms.

Pressure points for urinary retention

Urinary retention can be caused by a variety of factors, including neural disturbance, the use of certain medications, and benign enlargement of the prostate. In any situation where you feel difficulty urinating, you should contact your doctor immediately, but in order to alleviate the problem until you receive the appropriate medical treatment, you can massage the following 2 pressure points.
1. LV8
pressure points
It also helps reduce pain in the lower abdomen, sweating, insomnia, and depression, prevent skin diseases such as psoriasis and even improve sexual function and fertility.

2. UB39

pressure points

This point is also found in the knee, on the inner fold. Massaging this point helps not only in urinary retention, but also reduces the feeling of stiffness in the lower back and the frequency of contractions in the muscles of the legs and feet.

Pressure points for the treatment of frequent urination

If you visit the toilet 4-10 times a day to urinate, this is normal, but if you find yourself frequenting the bathroom more than this, you should seek medical advice, as you may have urinary tract infection, kidney stones or ovarian cysts, and it could very well be that the medications you’re taking are the cause. Until you receive the appropriate treatment, try massaging the following 2 pressure points to ease the problem.

3. CV4

pressure points

This point is in the center of the pelvis, about 7 cm below the navel, and massaging it allows you to reduce the frequency in which your body feels the need to urinate, and also to treat irregular menstruation and diarrhea.

4. K3

pressure points
You’ll find this point in the depression above your ankle. If you massage it, you can regulate your body's need to urinate and also treat balance problems, diminish toothaches and asthma attacks, prevent vomiting and even the possibility of cold sores.

Pressure points to treat a kidney infection

This type of infection is called pyelonephritis and is caused by a bacteria that causes inflammation in the kidney. The problem has symptoms such as high fever, rash, and high resting heart rate, and if you suffer from all of them it is strongly recommended to consult your doctor. To help ease the symptoms until you are properly treated, massage the following 2 points.

5. LU7

pressure points

This point is a thumb distance below the wrist, on the inside of the forearm. Massaging it you can alleviate symptoms of a kidney infection and also treat headaches that result from migraines, sore throat and pain or weakness in the wrist.

6. SP10

pressure points
To find this point, bend your knees, place your palm on the inside of the knee and feel its bulge - the point will be at a distance of 3 fingers from the end of the bulge, towards the hip. Massaging it helps not only relieve kidney infection but also reduce menstrual cramps, the appearance of acne, and it can even prevent thyroid problems.

Pressure points to treat kidney failure

In a state of renal failure, the kidneys can’t properly filter the blood that passes through them. The problem is often accompanied by symptoms such as exhaustion (physical or mental), lack of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, breathing difficulties, frequent urination, and high blood pressure. All of these may not appear immediately, but as soon as you notice them it is very important to see your doctor. Until you take care of the problem you can ease the burden on your kidneys and body by massage the following 2 points.

7. SP9

pressure points
This point is on the inside of the leg, just below the hamstring - bend your knee to find it, but massage it with your leg straight. When you massage the spot, you’ll help the kidneys filter toxins more easily and also reduce body fluid retention. In addition to this, massaging the point helps improve libido.

8. LV5

pressure points
You’ll find the point 7 inches above your ankle. When massaging it, not only will your kidneys filter blood better, but you’ll also help reduce chronic fatigue and strengthen your immune system, and in patients with cancer it helps to alleviate the side effects of chemotherapy.
