12 Foods that Help Our Kidneys

The kidneys play a crucial role in our urinary system by filtering waste materials and urine from our blood. It is essential to keep our kidneys healthy as they are susceptible to various diseases when not functioning correctly. Eating a balanced diet is known to promote overall health. Some foods are particularly beneficial to specific organs, including the kidneys. Whether you want to maintain a healthy urinary system or have kidney disease, incorporating these 12 foods into your diet can help promote healthy kidneys and a healthy body.

kidneys

1. Beans
To start, beans are a great source of protein and fiber, making them an excellent addition to any healthy diet. A type of bean known as the Kidney Bean is named after the organ due to its similar shape. The consumption of these beans can help reduce the risk of kidney disease, especially for individuals with high blood pressure and diabetes. The beans are also rich in fat-free proteins, which can balance blood pressure and provide necessary amino acids. However, those with low kidney function values should exercise caution before consuming large quantities of beans.

2. Peppers
 peppers
If you are worried about the condition of your kidneys, one of the best foods for you is the simple pepper: red, green or yellow. Peppers have a low amount of potassium as well as concentrations of vitamins A, C and B6 that make them a recommended addition of color, texture and health to your menu. Although potassium is an essential substance for the body, for those suffering from abnormal kidney functions, an excess of potassium is not a desirable situation, so such foods are an important part of a nutritional regime that protects them

3. Cabbage
Cabbage is rich in chemical compounds and antioxidants from the plant, which together with a high amount of vitamin K, and C and dietary fiber help it maintain normal kidney activity. Cabbage has a low amount of potassium, and various studies indicate its ability to protect our heart and blood vessels from diseases, and not just the kidneys. Also, cabbage is a very common vegetable that can be cooked in many ways, including steaming, baking, and even microwave preparation.

4. Garlic
One of the most well-known superfoods in the world, garlic, does wonders for our entire body and the kidneys are no exception. A high amount of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances found in it protect our body, and its ability to lower the cholesterol level in the blood and protect vital systems from cancer, are especially important benefits that protect the kidneys. It is important to note that if you are trying to follow a healthy diet for your kidneys, it is recommended to replace the salt you sprinkle over the food with natural garlic powder, thus avoiding excessive sodium consumption.

5. Apples
A simple apple is a snack or dessert with many health benefits, many of which have a positive effect on our digestive system and blood. Anti-inflammatory properties and the amount of antioxidants found in it help protect the liver as well. While many doctors do not support liver "cleansing" diets that consist only of such foods, eating one apple a day is still a highly recommended action as part of a balanced diet.

6. Onion
The onion is a versatile and popular food that can be easily incorporated into a variety of dishes. It is also a great source of flavonoids, which are organic compounds that act as natural antioxidants and have potent anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. These properties make the onion beneficial in fighting a range of illnesses and diseases, from common colds to cancer. Additionally, the onion contains chromium, a trace mineral that helps to regulate the body's metabolism and balance insulin and fat levels in the blood.

7. Cranberries
Cranberries are a type of superfood that can aid in preventing infections and inflammations in the urinary tract and kidneys. These berries make the urine more acidic, which allows them to provide these benefits. Drinking half a glass of natural cranberry juice per day is a great way to introduce more fluids, vitamins, and important nutrients into your body while enjoying a delightful taste. While dried cranberries also contain these essential substances, it is recommended to consume them in liquid form by nutritionists.

8. Olive oil
Olive oil is considered one of the healthiest types of oil in Israel. In addition to its contributions to decreasing the risk of heart disease, many experts believe that its ability to prevent infections and the oleic acid found in it is crucial for maintaining healthy kidneys and preventing oxidation processes that could harm them.

9. Strawberries
Strawberries are a nutritious food that contains various antioxidants and vitamin C. Recent studies conducted in California have shown that they can also have a positive effect on the kidney condition of diabetics by treating kidney damage. However, it's important to note that consuming large amounts of strawberries, like with any food, may cause harm if you have advanced kidney disease. It's best to consult with your doctor before making any significant changes to your diet.

10. Fish
Fish are an excellent source of protein, especially those that have omega-3 fatty acids. To maintain a healthy and smart diet, the American Heart, Diabetes and Kidney Associations all recommend consuming fish two or three times per week. Omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial for the heart and kidneys, as they decrease bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase good cholesterol (HDL). Egg whites are also an important source of protein that contain essential amino acids. Unlike other sources of protein, egg whites are low in phosphorus, which can cause kidney damage if consumed excessively.

11. Egg whites
Egg whites are a noteworthy source of high-quality protein, providing all nine essential amino acids that the human body cannot produce. These amino acids are crucial for tissue repair, hormone production, and immune function. However, unlike other protein sources such as red meat or dairy, egg whites are low in phosphorus. While this mineral is necessary for various bodily functions, excessive consumption can lead to kidney damage, particularly in individuals with chronic kidney disease. Thus, egg whites present a balanced protein option, offering the necessary amino acids without the risk of phosphorus overload. This makes them a particularly valuable dietary inclusion for those needing to manage phosphorus intake.

12. Cauliflower
Another representative of the cruciferous vegetable groups on this list, in addition to cabbage, is cauliflower, which is rich in folic acid and vitamin C. In addition to its nutritional value, cauliflower helps the liver to neutralize toxic substances for the body, and thus it is much easier for the kidneys to deal with them as part of the blood circulation. Despite this, it is important to note that eating too much cauliflower can contribute to the formation of kidney stones, so if you suffer from such a diagnosed disease, you should consult your doctor about the recommended dose for you.

 An important addition
Just as there are factors that positively affect the function and condition of our kidneys, there are also factors that cause damage. In your medicine cabinet, there are many pills that can be bought without a doctor's prescription, which can cause serious damage to the kidneys.

What are berries? Health benefits of Cranberry

What IS a berry? Why it's a small, pulpy fruit, which is typically edible as well. Most of them are colorful, with bright hues, rounded and juicy. Some are sweet and some are sour, and they do not have a big pit or stone in the center (at times, many small seeds or pips).

They are also, more often than not, really healthy, being able to prevent and help with a variety of health concerns. The guide below you leads to the health benefits of 8 different berries. Pick the one you'd like to know more about and click on the title!

Here's Why You Should Eat Cranberries
Cranberries can be found growing on evergreen dwarf shrubs along tropical rainforest areas in Northern America. They are highly acidic and contain powerful antioxidant properties that are known to fight off infections, diseases, and even help prevent cancer. It's no wonder that the magical little berries have been dubbed as superfruits!

Cranberries can be prepared in a wide variety of ways. They can be spread as a tasty jam, eaten in candied form, processed into juice, and have long been a staple of Thanksgiving dinners. You can grab a handful of dried cranberries for the perfect healthy snack on the go. They can be added to breakfast cereals, yogurts, trail mixes, and can even give a vegetable salad a zesty, flavorful taste.

Now that you're a bit more familiar with the tiny red berries, it's time to delve a bit further into the many health benefits they possess!

1) Prevents Urinary Tract Infections
Did you know that a simple glass of cranberry juice can prevent urinary tract infections from occurring? The Proanthocyanidins found inside the cranberry juice stops bacteria from attaching to cells of the bladder walls. Cranberry juice also helps flush toxins out of the body through urination. The bacteria never get a chance to multiply on the bladder walls due to the high acidity levels of the juice. Make sure you buy the unsweetened brands at your local supermarket.

2) Boosts The Immune System

The powerful antioxidants and phytochemicals found within the berries protect cells from free radicals and help strengthen your immune system. Cranberry juice also increases HDL (good cholesterol) in the body, while reducing the LDL (bad cholesterol).

3) Fights Cancer

The proanthocyanidin found in cranberries helps stop cancer cells from spreading throughout the body. Cranberry juice contains phenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanins, which are used to combat micro tumors that can invade blood cells, The anti-carcinogenic properties of the juice also help to prevent breast cancer.

4) Contains Anti-Tumor Properties
Polyphenolic compounds in cranberries have been found to contain anti-tumor properties. The salicylic acid of the dark red juice reduces swelling and blood clots, which can eventually form into tumors. The strong polyphenol properties encourage T-cell production along the intestine and reproductive tracts.

5) Improves Cardiovascular Health
A cup of cranberry juice can limit the chances of cardiovascular disease developing. The supercharged antioxidants also prevent atherosclerosis, which is the hardening of the arteries due to the accumulation of fatty plaques and cholesterol. The flavonoids found in cranberry juice help promote healthy blood flow throughout the body.

6) Helps Reduce Inflammation
Cranberry juice is loaded with many anti-inflammatory properties, including vitamin C, which helps limit inflammation and thrombosis. These anti-inflammatory properties ensure that viruses never stick around your blood cells for long.

7) Soothes Heartburn and Peptic Ulcers

The acidity of cranberry juice can help kill the helicobacter pylori bacteria that causes peptic ulcers and heartburn problems, which we wrote about in-depth here. People suffering from gastric disorders have turned to cranberry juice as a soothing relief for treating acid reflux issues.

8) Fights Off Yeast Infection

Yeast infections occur when there is an overgrowth of a type of yeast called Candida in the human body. The infections are common among pregnant women, or people suffering from diabetes. Cranberry juice kills the bacteria that plagues the urinary tract and flushes out the yeast.

9) Prevents Tooth Decay
Brushing and flossing are two vital components for preventing tooth decay, but a few cranberries can also benefit your teeth. Cranberries inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, which causes plaque formation and leads to cavities. Cranberries can even freshen your breath! Avoid the sugary brands, and go for the organic variety instead.

10) Prevents Kidney Stones from Forming
Cranberry juice reduces the amount of magnesium, citrate, oxalate, and calcium found in urine. The polyphenolic properties help fight off kidney infections, urinary tract infections and prevent bacteria from attaching to the membranes of the kidneys. Consult with your physician beforehand if you suffer from any renal diseases.

11) A Natural Acne Treatment

Cranberry juice contains an acne-fighting compound called resveratrol, and antiseptic properties that help ensure nice clean skin. As an added bonus, you can even make a mask out of cranberry juice, and here's how to do it:

• Mix a little cranberry juice with orange peel powder and a teaspoon of honey.
• Mix well until a paste develops.
• Apply the cranberry juice mask all over your face, and allow it to sit for 20 minutes before washing it off.

12) Prevents Scurvy

Sailors used to carry cranberries aboard their vessels to prevent scurvy at sea. Vitamin C deficiency is the leading cause of scurvy, but you won't have to worry about that problem with cranberries. The tiny red berries are extremely high in vitamin C, which is used to produce collagen to ensure healthy regulation of tissues in your immune system.

13) Helps You Lose Weight
Start your morning off with a delicious glass of natural cranberry juice. Cranberry juice plays a significant role in promoting good cholesterol levels in the body. Cranberries are full of essential nutrients and vitamins, both critical factors in maintaining a healthy diet. The high acidity prevents those annoying hunger pangs as well.

14) Softens Up the Skin
Cranberry juice helps promote healthy collagen production thanks to the high levels of vitamin C. Collagen joins together with keratin to strengthen the skin. The function of collagen is to help blood vessels beneath the skin carry oxygen. In turn, the collagen then softens up the skin, giving it that bright radiant glow, and a youthful appearance.

15) Promotes Healthy Hair Growth
Vitamins A and C help promote the growth of strong healthy hair. The essential nutrients found in vitamin C help repair damaged hair follicles. Just make sure you rinse thoroughly after.

16) Contains Anti-Aging Properties
Cranberry juice can help slow down the aging process by destroying free radicals. Free radicals are responsible for causing the formation of wrinkles on the skin. The super-powerful antioxidants found in cranberry juice promote healthy skin cells and get rid of any unwanted blemishes and redness.

17) Fights Common Infections
Are you suffering from a terrible cold? A glass of nature's wonder berries can help with that! Cranberry juice helps soothe a sore throat and combats infections. Cranberry juice inhibits the bacterial structures of the Haemophilus influenza, which causes painful ear and respiratory infections in children as well.

18) Can Be Used as a Natural Skin Toner
Cranberries are very acidic, so they are a useful treatment for oily skin. The cranberry juice mask mentioned earlier can help give your skin a lighter tone if used on a regular basis. It's important to use natural cranberry juice when preparing the mask.

19) Prevents Psoriasis and Alopecia
Nutritional deficiencies can lead to such scalp diseases as hair loss or psoriasis. The vitamin C found in the cranberry juice is used to treat a variety of hair disorders, including alopecia or male pattern baldness. A cup of cranberry juice may be poured over the scalp to prevent dandruff and psoriasis from occurring.

20) A Natural Hair Color
A natural cranberry tonic can be made to highlight your hair. Actress Nicole Kidman says that she keeps her thick red hair radiant by pouring a cup of cranberry juice over her head after shampooing. The directions for the natural hair color are as follows:
• Mix a cup of natural cranberry juice with 1/4 cup of water.
• Use the cranberry shampoo after washing your hair.
• Let the cranberry shampoo sit between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the type of hair you have. 30 minutes for lighter strawberry hair and up to an hour for darker colors.
• Rinse your hair out thoroughly.

2 Unusual uses of Cranberry

When people used to ask me what you do with cranberry, all I knew was make pickle ! After some years, I came to know that cranberry is very good to fight Urinary Tract Infections (UTI). In some countries, you do get cranberry capsules or as tablets, or else drink cranberry juice which is easily available in most stores. Of course, nothing better than eating them in their natural form, as simple pickle. Sadly, it is seasonal. When I lived in the north of India, it was easily available during autumn months. Having moved to the southern part of the country, sadly, I've not seen it in the shops here. Or may be, as we live in the outskirts, miss it when we go shopping !

Cranberry juice has been found to lower blood pressure. A study, found that people who drank low-calorie cranberry juice for two months saw an average drop of three points in blood pressure. It was also found that a group who drank a placebo beverage had no change in their BP numbers. Furthermore, the antioxidants in cranberries have been linked to lower blood pressure in other research too.
