Cucumber Remedies for the Skin and Hair

Cucumbers are not only a healthy addition to your diet, but they also have a string of surprising uses around the home and garden, and you can learn more about those here. This great vegetable has one other skill that needs sharing though because it is also extremely beneficial for your skin and hair - especially when used alongside some other basic ingredients you can find in your kitchen.

This list runs through 10 great skin and hair care remedies you can easily make at home using a humble cucumber. And yes, they are entirely appropriate for both sexes, so there is no excuse for the men out there not to look after their skin too!

1. Cucumber Eye Brightener
Skin and Hair Cucumber Remedies
We might as well start off with the most obvious use of cucumbers for skin care. We have all seen people put slices of cucumber over their eyes, but it's no pointless practice. The phytochemicals in cucumbers help collagen tighten and reduces puffiness, while cucumbers also encourage a subtle, skin lightening effect to reduce dark circles.

For best results, apply the cucumber when its cold (so straight from the refrigerator) and cut thick slices, and place them over your closed eyes for 10 - 15 minutes. As it's a completely natural process and chemical free, you can repeat the process as often as you like!

 2. A Cucumber Skin Toner
Many people ignore toners as part of their skincare regime, but toning can have major benefits for your skin. Toners help soothe and tighten the skin and close open pores so that dirt and grime cannot enter. This cucumber-based toner is great at calming and tightening your skin, especially as you get older.

Simply use:
• ½ a chopped cucumber, with the skin
• 3 tablespoons of witch hazel
• 2 tablespoons of distilled water
Blend all the ingredients in a food processor until the mixture is smooth. Pour the mixture through a sieve to remove any remaining solids and then transfer the toner to a clean container with an air-tight lid. The mixture will last for several weeks, and you can apply it to your skin daily using cotton balls or pads.

3. Oily skin remedy
 Skin and Hair Cucumber Remedies

If you suffer from oily skin, you may well find yourself prone to blemishes and spots. This mixture uses a few natural ingredients to create an oil-eliminating mask.

You will need:
Equal parts turmeric and cucumber juice
• A couple of squeezes of lemon

Mix the ingredients together and then apply directly to the face. Leave for 15 minutes before rinsing off. Repeat as regularly as necessary.

 4. A Cucumber Rejuvenator
Cucumber is fantastic at rejuvenating tired skin and improving a damaged complexion. In many ways, this is the very best use of cucumber as a skin care product. This mixture could not be simpler.

You will need:
• The juice of one whole cucumber (blended or processed)
• A few drops of lemon juice
Apply the mixture directly to your face and try to leave it there for a good amount of time before washing off. You should find that you have a smoother complexion and added glow. Repeat regularly for best results.

5. Refreshing Cucumber Skin Tonic
Skin and Hair Cucumber Remedies
Cucumbers contain numerous properties that can help give your skin a lift when it is feeling lifeless, or increasingly damaged by the rigors of the modern day world. This remedy provides an instant tonic for your skin:
 • Chop one cucumber and puree it in a blender with 4 tablespoons of mint
• Strain and sieve out the juice, and place it in a clean, sealed container
• Apply to the skin as soon as the mixture is cool
• The remedy will stay fresh for up to 24 hours

 6. Cucumber Cellulite Fighting Scrub
Cucumber mixed with a natural, mild abrasive and a gentler, soothing product can help strengthen areas of skin prone to cellulite build-up. That's why this recipe works so well:

• Juice a whole cucumber and strain away most of the remaining solids
• Mix with coffee granules and honey to create the scrub
• Scrub cellulite prone areas thoroughly, rinse off after use and moisturize

7. Cooling Summer Bath Oil
During warmer months, you might not fancy a piping hot, steamy bath. But your skin will definitely need to be revitalized after spending so much time in the heat of the sun. This mixture is just what the doctor ordered:
• Fill a bath with warm water (not too hot)
• Add 2 cucumber (sliced), 5 sprigs of peppermint and 2 cups of Epsom Salt
• Get in, soak and relax
• As an added bonus, aromas released by the mint and cucumber will also help you de-stress after a hard day

8. Cucumber Hair Conditioner
If you enjoy swimming, you will be aware of the damaging effects that chlorine can have on your hair over time. You should also know that cucumber has widely accepted powers that work wonders to re-condition damaged hair.
You will need
• ¼ cucumber (peeled)
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 1 egg
Don't juice the cucumber this time, pop it in the blender with the egg and olive oil and give it a blast until it turns into a thin paste.
Spread the resulting mixture evenly and smoothly throughout the damaged hair and leave it on for 15 minutes.
Rinse thoroughly before drying. If you are a regular swimmer, repeat this treatment at least once a month.

9. Cucumber-Avocado Moisturizing Face Mask
There are good reasons why both cucumbers and avocados are used in a variety of skin care products. This face mask allows you to harness the power of both ingredients for fantastic results!

You will need:
½ cup chopped cucumber
• ½ cup chopped avocado
• 1 egg white
• 2 teaspoons of powdered milk

Whizz all the ingredients through a blender until they take on the consistency of a smooth paste.

You can apply the mask immediately but may achieve better results if you put it in the fridge for half an hour before using.

Massage the mixture on to your face using smooth circular motions.

Leave it on for at least 30 minutes, until it dries, and then rinse off.

10. Cucumber Treatment for Combination Skin
Cucumber combined with plain yogurt provides a great solution for people who have separate patches of dry and oily skin on different parts of their face. It's really easy too, just take:

• ½ cucumber
• 1 tablespoon of plain natural yogurt

Puree the cucumber in a blender and then mix in the yogurt.
Massage onto the face and neck, and leave the mixture on for 20 minutes while relaxing.
Rinse off with warm water, before splashing yourself with cold water.
Your skin will feel smooth and replenished.

20 Great Reasons to Add Cranberries to Your Diet

Cranberries can be found growing on evergreen dwarf shrubs along tropical rainforest areas in Northern America. They are highly acidic and contain powerful antioxidant properties that are known to fight off infections, diseases, and even help prevent cancer. It's no wonder that the magical little berries have been dubbed as superfruits!

Cranberries can be prepared in a wide variety of ways. They can be spread as a tasty jam, eaten in candied form, processed into juice, and have long been a staple of Thanksgiving dinners. You can grab a handful of dried cranberries for the perfect healthy snack on the go. They can be added to breakfast cereals, yogurts, trail mixes, and can even give a vegetable salad a zesty, flavorful taste.

Now that you're a bit more familiar with the tiny red berries, it's time to delve a bit further into the many health benefits they possess!

Cranberries
1) Prevents Urinary Tract Infections
Did you know that a simple glass of cranberry juice can prevent urinary tract infections from occurring? The Proanthocyanidins found inside the cranberry juice stops bacteria from attaching to cells of the bladder walls. Cranberry juice also helps flush toxins out of the body through urination. The bacteria never get a chance to multiply on the bladder walls due to the high acidity levels of the juice. Make sure you buy the unsweetened brands at your local supermarket.

2) Boosts The Immune System
The powerful antioxidants and phytochemicals found within the berries protect cells from free radicals and help strengthen your immune system. Cranberry juice also increases HDL (good cholesterol) in the body, while reducing the LDL (bad cholesterol).

3) Fights Cancer
The proanthocyanidin found in cranberries helps stop cancer cells from spreading throughout the body. Cranberry juice contains phenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanins, which are used to combat micro tumors that can invade blood cells, The anti-carcinogenic properties of the juice also help to prevent breast cancer.

4) Contains Anti-Tumor Properties
Polyphenolic compounds in cranberries have been found to contain anti-tumor properties. The salicylic acid of the dark red juice reduces swelling and blood clots, which can eventually form into tumors. The strong polyphenol properties encourage T-cell production along the intestine and reproductive tracts.

5) Improves Cardiovascular Health
A cup of cranberry juice can limit the chances of cardiovascular disease developing. The supercharged antioxidants also prevent atherosclerosis, which is the hardening of the arteries due to the accumulation of fatty plaques and cholesterol. The flavonoids found in cranberry juice help promote healthy blood flow throughout the body.

6) Helps Reduce Inflammation
Cranberry juice is loaded with many anti-inflammatory properties, including vitamin C, which helps limit inflammation and thrombosis. These anti-inflammatory properties ensure that viruses never stick around your blood cells for long.

7) Soothes Heartburn and Peptic Ulcers
The acidity of cranberry juice can help kill the helicobacter pylori bacteria that causes peptic ulcers and heartburn problems, which we wrote about in-depth here. People suffering from gastric disorders have turned to cranberry juice as a soothing relief for treating acid reflux issues.

8) Fights Off Yeast Infection
Yeast infections occur when there is an overgrowth of a type of yeast called Candida in the human body. The infections are common among pregnant women, or people suffering from diabetes. Cranberry juice kills the bacteria that plagues the urinary tract and flushes out the yeast.

 9) Prevents Tooth Decay
Brushing and flossing are two vital components for preventing tooth decay, but a few cranberries can also benefit your teeth. Cranberries inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, which causes plaque formation and leads to cavities. Cranberries can even freshen your breath! Avoid the sugary brands, and go for the organic variety instead.

10) Prevents Kidney Stones from Forming
Cranberry juice reduces the amount of magnesium, citrate, oxalate, and calcium found in urine. The polyphenolic properties help fight off kidney infections, urinary tract infections and prevent bacteria from attaching to the membranes of the kidneys. Consult with your physician beforehand if you suffer from any renal diseases.

11) A Natural Acne Treatment
Cranberry juice contains an acne-fighting compound called resveratrol, and antiseptic properties that help ensure nice clean skin. As an added bonus, you can even make a mask out of cranberry juice, and here's how to do it:

• Mix a little cranberry juice with orange peel powder and a teaspoon of honey.

• Mix well until a paste develops.

• Apply the cranberry juice mask all over your face, and allow it to sit for 20 minutes before washing it off.

12) Prevents Scurvy
Sailors used to carry cranberries aboard their vessels to prevent scurvy at sea. Vitamin C deficiency is the leading cause of scurvy, but you won't have to worry about that problem with cranberries. The tiny red berries are extremely high in vitamin C, which is used to produce collagen to ensure healthy regulation of tissues in your immune system.

13) Helps You Lose Weight
Start your morning off with a delicious glass of natural cranberry juice. Cranberry juice plays a significant role in promoting good cholesterol levels in the body. Cranberries are full of essential nutrients and vitamins, both critical factors in maintaining a healthy diet. The high acidity prevents those annoying hunger pangs as well.

14) Softens Up the Skin
Cranberry juice helps promote healthy collagen production thanks to the high levels of vitamin C. Collagen joins together with keratin to strengthen the skin. The function of collagen is to help blood vessels beneath the skin carry oxygen. In turn, the collagen then softens up the skin, giving it that bright radiant glow, and a youthful appearance.

15) Promotes Healthy Hair Growth
Vitamins A and C help promote the growth of strong healthy hair. The essential nutrients found in vitamin C help repair damaged hair follicles. Just make sure you rinse thoroughly after.

16) Contains Anti-Aging Properties
Cranberry juice can help slow down the aging process by destroying free radicals. Free radicals are responsible for causing the formation of wrinkles on the skin. The super-powerful antioxidants found in cranberry juice promote healthy skin cells and get rid of any unwanted blemishes and redness.

17) Fights Common Infections
Are you suffering from a terrible cold? A glass of nature's wonder berries can help with that! Cranberry juice helps soothe a sore throat and combats infections. Cranberry juice inhibits the bacterial structures of the Haemophilus influenza, which causes painful ear and respiratory infections in children as well.

18) Can Be Used as a Natural Skin Toner
Cranberries are very acidic, so they are a useful treatment for oily skin. The cranberry juice mask mentioned earlier can help give your skin a lighter tone if used on a regular basis. It's important to use natural cranberry juice when preparing the mask.

19) Prevents Psoriasis and Alopecia
Nutritional deficiencies can lead to such scalp diseases as hair loss or psoriasis. The vitamin C found in the cranberry juice is used to treat a variety of hair disorders, including alopecia or male pattern baldness. A cup of cranberry juice may be poured over the scalp to prevent dandruff and psoriasis from occurring.

20) A Natural Hair Color
A natural cranberry tonic can be made to highlight your hair. Actress Nicole Kidman says that she keeps her thick red hair radiant by pouring a cup of cranberry juice over her head after shampooing. The directions for the natural hair color are as follows:

• Mix a cup of natural cranberry juice with 1/4 cup of water.

• Use the cranberry shampoo after washing your hair.

Some Unusual Benefits Of Apple Cider Vinegar

1. Clarifies Hair & Scalp

Hair looking dull, lifeless, or weighed down? Apple cider vinegar is packed with acetic acid that can eliminate product buildup, strengthen the hair shaft, and stimulate your scalp to boot!
To use it as a rinse, add 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar to 4 cups of water and stir. Pour the rinse over your hair after shampooing and let it soak in for a few seconds before rinsing with cold water and conditioning as usual.

2. Adds Shine

Apple cider vinegar is your secret weapon for shiny, lustrous hair. Add 1 tablespoon of ACV to 1 cup of water, then pour the mixture into a spray bottle.
Spritz this shine-boosting spray over wet hair after getting out of the shower.

3. Soothes Aching Feet

Use apple cider vinegar to make a simple foot soak that will soothe tired, aching feet! Combine equal parts ACV and warm water in a foot bath or large bowl and soak your feet in it for about 20 minutes.

4. Pore Cleansing Face Mask

In addition to offering benefits for your hair, apple cider vinegar can do wonders for your skin too! Mix 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and 2 teaspoons of bentonite clay with 1 tablespoon of raw honey in a small bowl.
Apply this pore cleansing mask mixture evenly to your face and leave it for 10-15 minutes to work its magic. Rinse it off with warm water afterward.

5. Tones Skin

Many people who suffer from psoriasis say that apple cider vinegar helps to reduce inflammation and redness. Using apple cider vinegar and a bit of water, you can make a simple skin toner to eliminate puffiness and redness anytime!
Mix 1 teaspoon of ACV with 1 cup of filtered water, and apply it to your skin with a cotton ball. No need to rinse!

6. Acne Treatment

Apple cider vinegar also contains malic acid, which can help fight acne and the bacteria that contribute to it. Apple cider vinegar can also help regulate oil production and balance skin’s pH, making breakouts less likely over time.
To take advantage of these acne-treating attributes, just use the toner described above in #5!

7. Minimizes Age Spots

Apple cider vinegar’s revitalizing effects can help lighten age spots over time. Just dab a small amount of ACV onto spots of discoloration before bed, then wash your face clean in the morning. (If it stings a bit, dilute the vinegar with water before applying.)

8. Promotes Oral Health

Mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and water in a small cup, then gargle it before brushing your teeth. This simple practice can help remove surface stains from teeth and kill bacteria in your mouth!

9. Prevents Ingrown Hairs

The same toner described in #5 in this list can be used as a post-shaving treatment. Just apply it to skin after shaving to help reduce redness and inflammation, as well as help prevent ingrown hairs from forming.

More tips
I've read that having 2 tsp of ACV mixed in a glass of warm water, drinking it before lunch and dinner, helps you to lose weight.

Also drinking ACV mixed with water, helps relieve acidity.

I use 2 tbsp each of ACV, honey and water with 1/4 tsp each of red chili pdr. and dry ginger pdr. mix it well, take 1 tsp 3 times a day to get relief from bad bouts of cough. Since, I'm COPD, all store bought cough syrup weren't effective, tried this combo, voila, get relief from bad bouts of cough. As when I have bad bouts of cough, due to fibromyalgia, my ribs ache a lot and I need to put pain patch to get relief.

Great Ways You Can Use Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar is often used for salad dressings, marinades, vinaigrettes, and chutneys, but that’s not all: It’s also known to prolong the feeling of satiety after eating, it has well-documented anti-glycemic effects, and quite a few other uses that everyone should know about.

1. Detox Tea
apple-cider-vinegar
2. Varicose Vein Remover
Rub apple cider vinegar onto your veins twice a day, and drink a teaspoon once a day.
3. All-Natural Toner
Equal parts of ACV and water, mix well, scrub your face with this mixture
4. Get Rid of Warts
What you need:
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Cotton wool
  • Medical tape
What you do:
1. Clean the area.
2. Fully soak the cotton wool with apple cider vinegar.
3. Place the soaked wool on the wart and cover with medical tape (or bandage).
4. Repeat daily until the wart dries out and falls off (should take up to a week).

Soak your toenail in a 1:2 solution of vinegar and water for 15 minutes a day.
6. Chemical-Free Flea and Tick Repellent
Make a 1:1 solution of water and organic apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle, and spray the dog once a week. If your dog doesn't like being sprayed, use a soaked washcloth instead.
You can also add a teaspoon of organic apple cider vinegar to the dog's water twice a week for similar results. Be sure to use organic ACV, as the more processed kind is not good for dogs.
7. Say "Bye Bye" to Moles
What you need:
  • Organic apple cider vinegar
  • Sterile needle (use rubbing alcohol or fire to sterilize it)
  • Cotton wool
What to do:
1. Clean the area.
2. Use the sterile needle to poke a few holes in the mole. (There are no nerves, so it won't hurt).
3. Apply an ACV-soaked piece of cotton to the mole for 20-30 minutes.
4. Repeat daily until the mole falls off. (Should be within a week).
8. Effective Fruit Fly Trap
What you need:
  • A jar
  • Raw apple cider vinegar

  • Liquid dish detergent
What to do:
1. Mix 2/3 cup of apple cider vinegar and about a tablespoon of dish detergent in a jar.
2. Create a cone out of the piece of paper and put it in the jar.
3. Leave the jar where the fruit flies are and let the mix work its magic.
9. Homemade Weed Killer
Mix ½ gallon (2 liters) of apple cider vinegar, ¼ cup salt, and ½ teaspoon of liquid dish detergent. Put in a spray bottle and spray any weed you want to get rid of.
10. Homemade Cough Remedy
What you need:
  • 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons of honey
  • 2 tablespoons of water
  • ¼ teaspoon of cayenne pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon of ground ginger
What to do:
Mix all the ingredients in a jar and shake well. Take a teaspoon for a child aged 2-9 years, and a tablespoon for ages 10 and up. I can vouch that this cough syrup works far better than the store bought one. I'm using it, as I'm a COPD patient.
11. Better Hair Care With Baking Soda and ACV
What you need:
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • Squeeze bottle
What to do:
Hair wash:
1. Mix 4-5 tablespoons of baking soda with 1 cup of water and pour into a squeeze bottle.
2. Wet your hair, then pour the mixture on it. Make sure to get it on all of your hair.
3. Let it sit for about a minute, then rinse thoroughly.
Conditioning:
1. Make a mixture of 1:4 ACV and water.
2. Squeeze any excess water from your hair.
3. Cover your hair with the mixture and rub it in as you would with regular conditioner.
4. Thoroughly rinse your hair.

12. Soothe and Heal a Sunburn
Apply straight to the burn, or you can dilute it with a bit of water if it stings too much. Use a towel or washcloth and keep it on the affected area for 20-30 minutes.
13. Heal Eczema
Mix ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar with 3 cups of water and lightly apply on the affected area. Caution – it may sting.
In my other posts, I've also mentioned that it is used to get rid of kidney stones, for weight loss, kindly see my other posts too, thanks.
