Toxic Positivity: Signs and Avoidance

Don't worry if you've never heard of Toxic positivity. This is a pretty new concept in the world (or at least a new term for it), and it came up following the "Great Life" illusion people post on social networks, along with the increasing awareness we have of mental well-being. In theory, high self-awareness and worrying about others are good things, but do we ever take it too far? Are our efforts to raise the spirits of a depressed person and calm anxious people actually doing more harm than good? Not everything can be solved with words like "happiness is a choice" or "think positive".

We often have the best intentions at heart when we say stuff like this, but in reality, they can encourage the person to ignore the problem and not to solve it or cope with it. So how does one recognize toxic positivity and how to avoid it? Here are four tips and signs that will help you get rid of it.

1. Ignoring the impact of negative emotions or trying to make them seem less significant

People using this method are trying to use their positivity to make others more positive by trying to take away the importance of a specific issue or problem. This is usually done with short sentences or proverbs and quotes that make light of the real feelings the other person is feeling, trying to make them seem unimportant.

In this way, your true emotions and the circumstances of your life are ignored when you hear things like "just think positive", or "be more active" - as if the problem is so trivial as to be fixed with platitudes and positivity. But that is not realistic when we're talking about true depression or any other mental issue.

We all struggle against negative emotions and anxiety, and at those moments, the last thing you need are empty platitudes. The thought that just being positive around you will make you better belittles the importance of what you are feeling.

Toxic positivity tells us our problems are not problems, and that you're the ones making them so. But instead of offering real help, your problems are, in effect, ignored. These people usually mean well, but may also be too lazy to try and invest real time and attention listening to your true problems without judgment.

2. Compare and Contrast
"You can't be sad, look how good your life is."
"You can't be depressed, there are so many people who'd love to have the life you have."
These kinds of sentences are perfect examples of toxic positivity that mask themselves as advice. This 'advice' fails to make a difference between objective reality and subjective reality. In a perfect world, we would all feel exactly the same as our exterior circumstances. If we had a good day - we'd be happy. If we had a bad day - we'd be sad. If we're rich - we'd be happy. If we're poor - we'd be sad.

This is a grand simplification of how emotions and wellbeing truly works. In reality - rich people still commit suicide and some poor people are the happiest people you'll ever meet. There is much more to human emotion than exterior circumstances. Some people have an unbalanced chemical system in their brains, and even when everything seems to be going well, they still feel terrible. They want to feel as good as they're supposed to, but it just isn't how they are truly feeling.

Most of them are too ashamed to admit it because they are seen as not appreciative of what they have. This kind of environmental attitude causes people to hide their true emotions, which leads them down a darker road still.

3. Negative Shaming
Negative shaming happens when positivity is held in such high regard that people will simply NOT ALLOW any kind of negativity around them. If you are the depressed person in the group, you may be asked to leave, or to 'stop bringing everyone down', instead of being offered sympathy and empathy. This kind of 'positive attitude' is actually hostile and ends up isolating the depressed person, causing them to feel alone and unable to be themselves. Once again, this sends the person on a darker road, where they cannot share their true emotions. These are the kinds of things that lead people to isolate themselves and could even result in deaths of despair: drugs, suicide and risky behaviors.

4. Hiding Emotions

As we've mentioned above, the result of the previous 3 types of toxic positivity is usually the same - the depressed person isolates their emotions, hides them and tries not to display them in front of the other person. This can either be because they don't want to hear empty words (#1), don't want to feel ashamed because their lives are supposed to be good in comparison with others (#2) or do not want to suffer negative results from other people who, ironically, don't want to be near negativity (#3) themselves.

These 3 all come from OTHER people. This one, however, comes from YOU. You are the ones who has, potentially, the most negative effect on what you are feeling. That is not to say it is your fault or that you can make yourself feel better, but you can certainly make yourself feel WORSE. It helps to be reminded that your emotions are not your fault, most of them are chemical reactions of the body. If you don't feel like you have friends with whom you can be honest about these feelings and receive honest support - it may be time to find better friends.

How to Avoid Toxic Positivity

As you see, toxic positivity is not that easy to detect because it often hides as an honest attempt of helping or advising you. It could very well be that the other person is not doing this to be mean to you or belittle you, but actually thinks they may be helping. That is because it is hard for them to imagine your real situation, something they have never experienced.

Still, the result is that your emotions are not being respected and you are made to feel even more alone. The best way to handle that is not to wait. Call people out it immediately, not sarcastically or with anger - but with honest feedback on how their advice makes you feel, and why it won't help. Explain to them how they CAN help you, offering support and love when you need it most and listening when you need to be listened to. Your true friends, those that really want to help you - will do that for you gladly.

8 Symptoms You Should Never Ignore

Unless we’re in extreme pain or one of our bones is sticking out, few of us want to admit that we need to go spend hours waiting in the emergency room, just so we can spend a load of money on health insurance bills. After all, it might be nothing, and we’d have wasted all that time and money for nothing.
However, this is not a wise move to make for your health. We fully understand why you would not want to make a trip to the ER, but while it’s easy to push your symptoms aside, there are some that you should never ignore. Below are 8 red flag signs that you need to see a doctor as soon as possible:
1. Spiked Fever
The only time it’s normal to have a spiked fever is when you have a cold or flu – the raised body temperature shows that your body is fighting something. However, if a fever suddenly spikes out of the blue – and spikes high – you should take yourself to the ER. According to doctors, any temperature higher than 105 degrees in an adult is a medical emergency. A consistent fever over 103 degrees indicates a serious infection that needs to be treated urgently.
2. Feeling Faint
If you stand up quickly, or haven’t had much to eat or drink, then you might feel lightheaded. But if it comes out of the blue and is so extreme that you feel like you might faint, you need to go to the ER. Not only can this indicate some larger problem, but you could injure yourself if you do fall over.
3. Feeling Breathless
Did you just climb a load of stairs or go for jog? If that’s the case, then it’s okay to feel a little out of breath. However, this is a totally different story if you get breathless out of nowhere and cannot seem to catch your breath. If you start to feel short of breath and your lungs and throat start to feel tight, you should head on down to the ER.
4. Splitting Headache
It’s so easy for us to consider a headache to be “normal.” You might take a pill, drink a glass of water, and sleep it off. However, you need to draw the line at some point. Should you have a headache for more than a day, or if you’re experiencing excruciating pain, seek medical help.
5. Upset Stomach
If you have been around someone who is ill or you ate something a little funky, having an upset stomach isn’t the end of the world. However, if diarrhea continues for more than five days, or you start becoming dehydrated, go straight to the ER.
6. Chest Pains
There are different types of chest pains. If you’re experiencing a squeezing feeling that turns into a tight and painful ache, seek medical attention immediately. This is especially important do if you’re experiencing these pains straight after exercising as this could be a sign of cardiac arrest.
7. Pins and Needles
If you’ve been sitting on your foot and you get pins and needles, that makes sense since you’ve been restricting the blood flow. However, if you get this feeling out of the blue, especially in your limbs, this could be a potential sign of a stroke and should be immediately examined.
8. Random bump
Everyone should know that an unrecognized lump anywhere on your body should be handled with care. Unexplained lumps can indicate all sorts of things. If it hurts, it could be an infection or a small fracture. If not, it could be cancerous. Either way, going to the ER will give you peace of mind.

Two or more headaches in a week warrant a doctor's visit

It has come to light that people take the effects of headache very lightly.

According to a study by a primary-care physician , people's first instinct is to simply pop a paracetamol, drink water, and carry on with the day.

However, the Dr. has urged people to be more wary of headaches as multiple headaches could be a sign of something far more serious than simply an exhausting or disturbing day.

The Dr. found that a shocking number of people tend to ignore their headaches, bear the pain and simply grin, despite knowing how debilitating it could be.

He urged people to pay closer attention as frequent headaches could indicate that an individual is suffering from conditions such as brain tumours or aneurysms.

The Dr. was quoted as saying, "You don't want people to overreact, but you also don't want them to under-react".

According to doctors, there are three common types of headaches- tension headaches, sinus headaches, and migraines.

Noting, how frequently a person tends to be struck down by a headache is another key. Frequency could also indicate the severity to seek medical advice.

The Dr. pointed that if a person has more than two headaches a week for longer than a fortnight, then it is of utmost importance to get checked by a doctor.

By analyzing and noting down the frequency of headaches, people might be able to pinpoint their triggers.

It could include things like specific food or drink, being on your period, an insufficient amount of sleep, insufficient water intake and such.

Also, pinpointing the exact point of origin of your headache could come in handy for the assessment.

The Dr. explained that tension headaches start at the back of your head and radiate up and over the crown.

Sinus headaches, according to him, usually affect the face around eyes. Addition of nausea and blind spots to a splitting headache attribute to migraines.

Other symptoms, such as nausea, numbness, and memory problems, which we often tend to ignore could point towards some serious underlying condition.

Six Ways In Which You Can Ruin Your Knees

1. Ignoring knee pain.

An occasional ache here and there is common.  "But knowing when you can and can't ignore pain is key,” says sports medicine specialist.
Metzl's rule of thumb: When the pain limits your ability to do what you normally do, you need to have it checked out.
"If your body is sending you signals, you need to listen to them.  If they persist, you need to have it checked out,” he says.
2. Being overweight.
Every pound of body weight yields five pounds of force on the knee, so even 10 extra pounds can put a considerable load on those joints.
Being overweight also increases your chances of osteoarthritis in the knee, a common and often disabling form of arthritis that wears away the knee's cushiony cartilage.   Excess pounds also cause existing arthritis to worsen more rapidly.  According to the CDC, two out of three obese adults suffer from knee osteoarthritis at some time in their life.
Although diet and exercise are critical for weight loss, it's a double-edged sword.
"If your knees hurt, it's harder to lose weight through exercise,” says Metzl.  So he recommends activities that go easy on the knee.
For example, opt for a stationary bike over running on the treadmill, and walk on a flat surface instead of hilly turf.  If you're a die-hard treadmill fan, then go for longer sessions of walking punched with brief intervals of brisk walking or running every three to five minutes.

3. Not following through with rehab and rest.

The rest and rehabilitation period after a knee injury is critical to avoiding future pain or re-injury.  Depending on the type of damage and treatment, recovery could last anywhere from a couple of weeks to several months.
"During the rehab period, you need someone to help you tell the difference between something that just hurts, and something that's going to do you harm,”.
He says that many of his young athlete patients are too eager to return to regular play as soon as they stop limping.  He advises patients to work with an orthopaedic surgeon, a sports medicine physician, a physical therapist, an athletic trainer, or some combination of these pros, in order to ensure proper focus is placed on gradually strengthening the knees.

4. Neglecting your ACL.

One of the most commonly injured ligaments in the knee, the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is responsible for about 150,000 injuries in the U.S. every year.
Women in particular have a two- to eight-times higher risk for ACL tears compared to men, mainly because the way women naturally jump, land, and turn puts greater strain on the ACL.
However, male and female athletes alike can be trained to "rewire” themselves and thus lower risks of knee injury.  That's done through neuromuscular training, which involves supervised practice in improving agility, leg strength, and jump-landing techniques for better knee joint stability.
These specialized techniques are effective in reducing risks of knee injury by almost one-half, according to a neuromuscular training studies.
"Given what we know in how useful it can be in reducing ACL tears, it's irresponsible of coaches and parents to not require athletes to undergo neuromuscular training,”.
He recommends that athletes of any age who play ACL risk-prone sports should seek help from an athletic trainer or other trained professional to help avoid this debilitating injury.

5. Overdoing it.

"You make gains in fitness when you work hard and then allow your body to recover.  You can't do a hard workout every day," Metzl says.
A sudden increase in intensity or duration of exercise can cause overuse injuries from repetitive strain.  Tendinitis and kneecap pain are common symptoms in the knee.
Pushing too hard is also related to over training syndrome, a physiological and psychological condition among athletes in which they exceed their ability to perform and recover from physical exertion, often leading to injury or lowered performance.
Be sure to include stretching exercises before and after working out.  And follow hard training days with easy ones so your body can recover.

6. Overlooking other muscles around the knees.

Weak muscles and lack of flexibility are primary causes of knee injuries.  When the muscles around the kneecap, hip, and pelvis are strong, it keeps the knee stable and balanced, providing support by absorbing some of the stress exerted on the joint.
Dr. stresses the importance of building the quadriceps and hamstring muscles, as well as proper strengthening of the body's core muscles, including the obliques, lower back muscles, and upper thigh.
His favourite tool to help accomplish this strengthening is a Swiss medicine ball. Other exercises to try are knee extensions, hamstring curls, leg presses, and flexibility exercises.
