Covid-19 or the Flu: How to Tell the Difference

As infection rates of the coronavirus continue to surge and lockdowns are gradually implemented pretty much everywhere around the world, it is important to be vigilant and aware of the virus symptoms. The tricky part is that Covid-19 shares quite a few symptoms with the flu and the common cold, which are both very likely to spread at this time of the year as well. But there are still some minor yet important differences, which are worth knowing and paying attention to. 

Both Covid-19 and the influenza are transmitted the same way, through respiratory droplets, and they can both be transmitted by a carrier before they show any symptoms. There are several overlapping symptoms like fever, tiredness and a dry throat. The body’s normal temperature usually shifts between 36-37°C / 98°F. Any body temperature that is above 38°C/ 100.4°F is classified as a fever!


So How Are They Different?

There are a few symptoms that are typical to the flu but rarely occur in cases of Covid-19, like muscle pain and headache. The incubation period for the flu is shorter, thus symptoms appear sooner. This table outlines in detail the slight differences in symptoms:

Level of Contagiousness: Covid-19 is found to be more contagious than the flu. To work out how fast a disease is likely to spread, epidemiologists use a measure called ‘basic reproduction number’, also known as the R naught or R0. The R0 for Covid-19 is 2.5 - meaning any sick person is likely to infect 2 or 2.5 other people. The R0 for the flu, on the other hand, is just 1.3, which makes the new coronavirus almost twice as contagious.

Mortality Rate: For both diseases, the severity of symptoms can vary between mild to severe. However, the fraction of people who develop severe symptoms that require intensive care is higher for Covid-19, and the mortality rate is higher as well. For the seasonal flu, it tends to be 0.1 percent, which means one in 1000 people dies of the disease.

At the moment, 14% of all closed Covid-19 cases have resulted in death. But it is important to note that the true and precise mortality rate will take some more time to fully understand and determine.
The Group Most Affected: Another major difference is the population most susceptible to infection. While children and pregnant women tend to become very sick with the flu, they don’t seem to be significantly affected by Covid-19 to date. Those who are most at risk of being infected with Covid-19 and developing complications are older age groups and people with chronic illnesses and weakened immune systems. Data shows people in their 60s have the highest rate of diagnosis, but health authorities stressed that it does not mean young adults should not be complacent about the virus. The possibility of getting a severe form of the disease in younger patients does exist, and the preventative measures required by the WHO and CDC apply to everyone.

Treatment and prevention: As influenza has been around for much longer, a vaccination against it has been developed. Because the strains mutate, every year doctors try to predict which ones will be most common and select the right vaccine components for that season.

There are also antiviral drugs for the flu, which are sometimes prescribed to help the body reduce symptoms.

Unfortunately, there is still no vaccination or drugs against Covid-19, though health experts and scientists are working towards developing them, and some clinical trials are already underway.

The only measure we can take against Covid-19 at the moment is doing our best to prevent it. The way to do that is:

    Avoiding crowds and gatherings of any size
    Standing at least 6ft (2 meters) apart from other people
    Maintaining good hygiene - washing hands frequently
    Avoiding touching the face
    Staying at home as much as possible, especially if feeling unwell.

Hormone released in exercise delay Alzheimer’s

Physical exercise can help counter the loss of memory caused by Alzheimer’s as well as delay the onset of the most common type of dementia.

Researchers  established a link between levels of irisin, a hormone produced by the body during exercise, and the development of the progressive disease.
The tests, carried out on rats with Alzheimer’s, showed low levels of irisin in the brains of Alzheimer’s sufferers, and a reversal in memory loss when irisin levels were boosted through physical exercise.

The study showed that the levels of this hormone are, in fact, decreased in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s, says a professor.

In addition, the team showed that by boosting the levels of the hormone, memory improves.

By showing that irisin is an important mediator of the beneficial effects of exercise, the findings indicate the hormone can be a novel agent capable of opposing synapse failure and memory impairment, says the study.

The research also reinforces the importance of physical activity in preventing memory loss and brain diseases, including Alzheimer’s, says the report.

Alzheimer’s is a degenerative disease that erodes memory, eventually impairing language, reasoning and other mental functions.

Removing old cells from joints can delay onset of osteoarthritis

Good news, a study has found that selective removal of old cells, senescent cells (SnCs) from joints can significantly delay the onset of osteoarthritis. The team presented a novel pharmacologic candidate that alleviates age-related degenerative joint conditions, such as osteoarthritis (OA) by selectively destroying SnCs.
 
Their findings suggested that the selective removal of old cells from joints could reduce the development of post-traumatic OA and allow new cartilage to grow and repair joints. This breakthrough research was done recently by some researchers.

Senescent cells (SnCs) accumulate with age in many vertebrate tissues and are present at sites of age-related pathlogy. Although these cells play an essential role in wound healing and injury repair, they may also promote cancer incidence in tissues. For instance, in articular joints, such as the knee and cartilage tissue, SnCs often are not cleared from the area after injury, thereby contributing to OA development.

To test the idea that SnCs might play a causative role in OA, they took both younger and older mice and cut their anterior cruciate ligaments (ACL) to mimic injury. They, then, administered injections of an experimental drug, named UBX0101 to selectively remove SnCs after anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) surgery.

Indeed, the research team reported that aged mice did not exhibit signs of cartilage regeneration after treatment with UBX0101 injections, The researchers noted that their findings provide new insights into therapies targeting SnCs for the treatment of trauma and age-related degenerative joint disease. The research appeared in a medical journal.

A new blood test can predict the onset & track progression of Huntington's disease

In a first, a blood test that can predict the onset and track progression of Huntington's disease has been developed.

The finding may help identify new treatments for the genetic brain disorder, which is fatal and currently incurable.

Huntington's disease is an inherited condition in which nerve cells in the brain break down over time.

The study showed that measuring the levels of neurofilament -- a protein released from damaged brain cells -- may help predict the onset of the disease as well as its progression.

"This is the first time a potential blood biomarker has been identified to track Huntington's disease so strongly," said Edward Wild from the University College London.

The results showed that the patients who were carriers of the genetic mutation of the disease had neurofilament concentrations that were 2.6 times that of the control participants.

Further, the level rose throughout the disease course from premanifest to stage 2 disease, the researchers said.

"Neurofilament has the potential to serve as a speedometer in Huntington's disease, since a single blood test reflects how quickly the brain is changing," Wild added.

For the study, published in the journal Lancet Neurology, the team measured neurofilament levels in blood samples from 366 volunteers who were followed for three years.

In the group who had no symptoms at the start of the study, the level of neurofilament predicted subsequent disease onset, as volunteers with high neurofilament levels in the blood at the start were more likely to develop symptoms in the following three years.

Scientists are presently in the process of testing a new generation of so-called 'gene silencing' drugs that may put brakes on the disease.

"Measuring neurofilament levels could help us figure out whether those brakes are working," Wild noted.

A team of researchers have identified a network of nine genes that play a key role in the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and these findings could help scientists develop new treatments to delay the onset of the disease in a study of a family of 5,000 people in Columbia, scientists identified genes that delayed the disease and others that accelerated it, and by how much. 

Arcos-Burgos at the John Curtin School of Medical Research said that if they could work out how to decelerate the disease, then they could have a profound impact. 

Mr.Burgos said that it would be more successful to delay the onset of the disease than to prevent it completely, adding that even if they delay the onset by on average one year, that would mean nine million fewer people will have the disease in 2050. 

Burgos and his team studied the variable age of onset of dementia in this family and with the cooperation of the family, the team were able to discount environmental factors and trace their genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s Disease back to a founder mutation in one individual who came to the region about 500 years ago. 

The team was able to isolate the nine genes involved in Alzheimer’s, some of which delay the onset by up to 17 years, while others advance its progress. 

The study is published in the Journal Molecular Psychiatry.

Turmeric could help treat diabetes

Curcumin, a substance in turmeric, combined with an omega-3 fat may potentially delay or prevent the onset of type-2 diabetes, according to researchers.

Health scientists from the University of Newcastle's Nutraceuticals Research Group, led by Professor Manohar Garg, are seeking 80 recruits for a new clinical study to find out whether the Indian spice combined with an omega-3 fat can delay the onset of type 2 diabetes or prevent it altogether.

"The root cause of type 2 diabetes is systemic inflammation, which impacts insulin secretion and function," said Garg. "We want to nip the inflammation in the bud," he said. "This study will use two bioactive compounds that we find in food – curcumin and omega-3 fat. Both are very important anti-inflammatory agents," Garg said.


Curcumin, derived from turmeric, is part of the ginger family and commonly used for food colouration. Its healing properties are well known in India.

"Turmeric has been used for centuries to promote healing of bruises, sprains, wounds and inflammation," he said. "Nowadays in India the level of curcumin (turmeric) intake has dropped considerably as people switch to Westernised fast foods, and it parallels with a significant rise in type 2 diabetes cases. In fact the disease is now an epidemic in India and may soon be the number one health burden," said Garg.

The randomised control trial will test both compounds, with the recruitment group being segregated into four. One will get curcumin only, the second will get omega-3 fat only, the third will receive both, and the fourth will serve as a control group.

The capsules contain 200 milligrammes of curcumin and one gramme of omega-3 fat respectively. People who are prone to develop diabetes because of impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glucose, and who are aged between 30 and 70, may be eligible.

"The anti-inflammatory mechanisms surrounding curcumin and omega-3 fats are different, so we want to test if they complement each other and have treatment synergies beyond their individual effects," Garg said."Our thinking is that the combination is safe, free of any side-effects and may prove to be as effective as drugs used for management of diabetes," he added.
