New Blood Test to Detect Over 50 Cancers With 93% Accuracy

The diagnostic tools doctors use to detect cancer are more efficient and effective than ever, but they can be quite invasive and require a lot of equipment. These are bigger drawbacks than may seem at first glance, as the invasiveness of colonoscopies, pap smears, and mammograms discourage patients from doing them, whereas the necessity for equipment can make these diagnostic tools inaccessible to many people. In addition, many cancers can only be detected once the first symptoms already occur, which is often too late.

Thus, the need for better diagnostic tools for different cancer types is still crucial and urgent. One new blood test developed by American and British researchers published in the journal Annals of Oncology promises to make cancer diagnosis much easier. The researchers claim that the test is capable of detecting over 50 cancer types with incredible accuracy, often even before the first symptoms develop.

How Does This Test Work?

As revolutionary as it may sound, this test will indeed be capable of detecting a very large percentage of cancers at a very early stage with new levels of accuracy. Even rare and particularly dangerous cancers that are typically very difficult to identify before the first symptoms show up, like cervical or lung cancer, will be distinguished by a single blood draw with this novel blood test.

But how is this even possible?

The combination of computational technologies and DNA testing is the key. The novel test is based on a previous finding that the DNA of cells affected by cancer is altered by chemicals of the methyl group, and different combinations of these chemicals and the location of the methylation on the DNA double helix could point to a specific type of cancer.

What many of you do not know is that this DNA altered by cancer isn’t just localized in the affected cells themselves, some of it is absorbed into the bloodstream. This type of DNA, also referred to as cell-free DNA or cfDNA, is exactly what the novel cancer test is isolating, so there is no need to do a biopsy and access the tumor itself. After isolating the methylation patterns of the cfDNA in the lab, the test results are fed into a computer, which goes through a series of complex computations and subsequently matches the methylation patterns to the type of cancer a person might have.

How Accurate Is This Test?
Although the study authors are still confirming their previous trial results in a larger population study, so far the results are truly impressive. After testing blood samples of over 4,000 people, some of whom had cancer, and some who didn’t, the results of the test were accurate in detecting cancer 93% of the time. The researchers tested more than 50 types of cancer in the study, and for these cancers, the test managed to detect where the cancer had originated in the body in 96% of cases.

The accuracy is unprecedented, and the researchers have estimated that less than 1% of patients would receive an inaccurate cancer diagnosis, much lower compared to many current cancer screenings. As the senior authors of the study explained to Medical News Today, the test provides the “ability to detect multiple deadly cancer types with a single test that has a very low false-positive rate, and the ability to identify where in the body the cancer is located with high accuracy to help healthcare providers to direct next steps for diagnosis and care.”

Ultimately, this test could become the new, easier screening tool for multiple cancers that can be implemented more than current cancer screenings and save countless lives every year. As of now, it’s unknown when the test will become available, but we are sure to keep you up to date with any further developments regarding this revolutionary test.

New Blood Test Screens for Cancers With 99.4% Accuracy

In the vast majority of cases, cancer is not the fatal diagnosis it once was, but the key to recovery is early detection, which is still a problem for those cancer types that are more difficult to diagnose at earlier stages. But even here, the world of medicine is constantly making significant progress, and an excellent example of this is a new blood test that is capable of detecting over 20 types of cancer, including the more difficult-to-diagnose varieties like cervical, pancreatic, colorectal and breast cancer, with a 99.4% accuracy.

What Is This Test?

The blood test is based on cutting-edge genetic research that attempts to detect the genetic changes that happen to their DNA when a person is suffering from cancer. More specifically, the test looks for abnormal methylation in the DNA, which is a process when the DNA is altered by compounds known as methyl groups. The presence of these genetic abnormalities can point to different cancers, which is exactly what this new blood screening is trying to pinpoint.
The test was developed by Harvard University scientists at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and it has recently undergone a series of trials suggesting the test is effective at diagnosing many different cancers. Out of the 3,586 blood samples collected from both cancer patients and healthy controls alike, the test identified cancer patients correctly with amazing 99.4% precision. Cancer Detection Blood Test stages of cancer chart
Furthermore, the scientists checked how well the test approximates the origin of the cancer, and it turns out that the test gets that right as well with 89% precision. But one of the greatest goals of the study was to show that the blood test is capable of detecting 14 high-risk cancers that account for 63% of cancer deaths, such as esophagus, breast, lung, gastric, ovary, pancreatic cancer, and others.
These cancers were detected correctly with 76% accuracy. More specifically, within this high-risk cancer group, the test accurately detected Stage I cancer 32% of the time, stage II - 76%, Stage III - 85%, and Stage IV - 93%. This is a great success, as many of these high mortality cancers are typically found in more advanced and difficult-to-treat stages.
Overall, this one blood test successfully detected ⅓ of patients with stage one cancer and ¾ of those suffering from stage two cancer, so it has an excellent potential of really improving current diagnostic practices and prevent many deaths. The researchers have recently presented the results of this trial in September 2019, at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Congress, and hopefully, this revolutionary technique will soon become a successful diagnostic tool for physicians worldwide.

Researchers discover new blood test which can detect multiple types of cancer

Researchers have discovered a new kind of blood test in development which is capable of screening for a number of types of cancer.

Moreover, it has a high degree of accuracy, according to the results presented at the recently held seminar.

The test, developed uses next-generation sequencing technology to probe DNA for tiny chemical tags ( methylation) that influence whether genes are active or inactive.

When applied to nearly 3,600 blood samples, some from patients with cancer, some from people who had not been diagnosed with cancer at the time of the blood draw- the test successfully picked up a cancer signal from the cancer patient samples and correctly identified the tissue from where cancer began ( the tissue of origin).

The test's specificity- its ability to return a positive result only when cancer is actually present- was high, as was its ability to pinpoint the organ or tissue of origin researchers found.

The new test looks for DNA, which cancer cells shed into the blood stream when they die. In contrast to ' liquid biopsies', which detest genetic mutations or other cancer-related alterations in DNA, the technology focuses on modifications to DNA known as methyl groups.

Methyl groups are chemical units that can be attached to DNA, in a process called methylation, to control which genes are 'on' and which are ' off'.

Abnormal patterns of methylation turn out to be, in many cases, more indicative of cancer- and cancer type- than mutations are.

The new test zeroes in on portions of the genome where abnormal methylation patterns are found in cancer cells.

Our previous work indicated that methylation-based assays outperform traditional DNA-sequencing approaches to detecting multiple forms of cancer in blood samples, said the study's lead author.
In the study, investigators analysed cell-free DNA ( DNA that had once been confined to cells but had entered the bloodstream upon the cells' death) in 3,583 blood samples, including 1,530 from patients diagnosed with cancer and 2,053 from people without cancer.

The patients samples comprised more than 20 types of cancer,  including hormone receptor-negative breast, colorectal, esophageal, gallbladder, gastric, head and neck, lung, lymphoid leukemia, multiple myeloma, ovarian and pancreatic cancer.

The overall specificity was 99.4 %, meaning only 0.6% of the results incorrectly indicated that cancer was present.

The sensitivity of the assay for detecting pre-specified high mortality cancer ( the percent of blood samples from these patients that tested positive for cancer) was 76 %.

Within this group, the sensitivity was 32 % for patients with stage 1 cancer, 76 % for those with stage 2 , 85 % for stage 3 and 93 % for stage 4.

Sensitivity across all cancer types was 55%, with similar increases in detection by stage. For the 97 % of samples that returned a tissue of origin result, the test correctly identified the organ or tissue of origin in 89 % of cases.

New blood test can detect ovarian cancer up to two years faster

A new blood test can now detect signs of ovarian cancer up to two years earlier than the time taken for diagnosis of the disease at present, with scientists having identified key proteins’ markers associated with the deadly disease.

The scientists  have discovered that the presence of a biomarker panel — four proteins put together — indicates the possibility of Epithelial Ovarian Cancer (EOC).

The new blood test will identify this biomarker panel for detection of ovarian cancer up to two years faster.

Most ovarian cancers are EOC, which forms in the tissue covering the ovary. If EOC is diagnosed at stage I, there is 90 per cent chance of surviving for at least five more years, while it is 22 per cent if diagnosed at stage III or IV.

“The algorithm designed will screen the blood sample and flag any abnormal levels of the proteins associated with the cancer. The screening test identifies ovarian cancer up to two years before the current tests allow,” says a statement from the lead researcher.

Seven-year study

For the research, the scientists had collected blood samples from 80 women — 49 with EOC and 31 with no family history of EOC and no diagnosis of cancer — over a period of seven years.

“Around half of ovarian cancer cases are picked up at a late stage, when treatment is less likely to be successful. Developing simple tests like these that could help detect the disease sooner is essential,” the statement quoted by a researcher.

Third most common cancer among Indian women

Ovarian cancer is reportedly the third most commonly detected cancer among Indian women and the seventh most common cancer in the world.

Gene variants BRCA1 and BRCA2 increase the risk of ovarian cancer.

According to a study published last year, the rate of ovarian cancer in India increased substantially by 28.6 per cent between 1990 and 2016.

In 2016, there were nearly 26,000 new cases of ovarian cancer, apart from 76,000 already prevalent cases. The number of new cases was highest in Kerala, followed by Delhi, Arunachal Pradesh and Punjab that year.

New blood test on horizon for paediatric liver disease

In a major relief to paediatric Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) patients, a new blood test could become clinical practice within 5 years, reducing the need for a liver biopsy in the patients.

Liver biopsy is currently the most accurate test for NAFLD and the only method routinely used in practice for assessing the presence of scarring or inflammation. However, a biopsy is invasive, resource intensive, costly, prone to sampling error and carries a small risk of significant complications.

Therefore, the availability of an accurate and non-invasive marker to replace the need for liver biopsy, both in routine practice and in a clinical trial setting is a major breakthrough for children, parents and healthcare professionals.

This research is the 1st major finding to be reported from  researchers.

It is early but the results of the research are promising and could help shift the way we understand and manage paediatric NAFLD - saving resources, times and stress for children and their parents. The new multi-centre registry provides us with an opportunity to tackle these challenges, said the lead author of the study.

The EU-PNAFLD registry will facilitate recruitment into interventional clinical trial as well as imaging, biomarker, and translational studies, plus allow greater understanding of the long-term natural history of NAFLD. The ultimate aim is to understand the condition sufficiently to intervene and slow disease progression so we can reduce the number of patients requiring liver transplantation later in life.

The study looked at 67 children with NAFLD and found that different types of fats in the blood were associated with features of fatty liver on liver biopsy, allowing researchers to determine the presence of inflammation and scarring -also known as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and fibrosis.

NAFLD affects around 1 in 10 children and is the most common paediatric liver disorder. It can progress to advanced scarring ( cirrhosis), liver failure and liver cancer.

New Blood Test May Help Predict Pre-term Birth

Researchers are working on a blood test that could be able to detect risk of spontaneous pre-term delivery.
According to a study,  five micro particle proteins found in first-trimester blood samples may give clues about the risk of spontaneous pre-term birth.

"Our goal is to develop prognostic markers for patients to help make predictions and offer highly personalised care to woman from early stages of pregnancy," said co-author.

According to researchers, nearly 10 per cent births are taking place before 37-week gestation against the normal 40 weeks. Pre-term birth can result in several conditions, including pre-term labour, early rupture of the placental membrane or preeclampsia.

Mothers with history of pre-term deliveries face higher risks. But predicting spontaneous pre-term birth is challenging, particularly in the case of first-time mothers, the team said.

For the study, researchers studied blood samples, collected toward the end of the first trimester of pregnancy, from three established bio-banks.

The team compared samples from 87 women who delivered at or before 35 weeks with samples from 174 women who delivered at term and were of the same age and at the same week of pregnancy at the time giving blood.

They analysed multiple circulating micro particles associated proteins and found that a subset of these proteins could help predict risks, both for the first-time mothers as well as those who had previously given birth.

New blood test can diagnose TB 2 years in advance

Scientists have found a new blood test that can accurately predict the development of tuberculosis (TB) up to two years before its onset in high-risk patients.

Those living with someone with active TB are at highest risk for developing the disease, yet only about 5-20 per cent of people infected with tuberculosis actually develop TB, according to a study published recently.

The researchers developed and validated a blood test that measures the expression levels of four genes that can more accurately predict the development of TB in high-risk patients.

"We found that this prediction (up to two years before the onset of the disease) is possible through measurements of a combination of a four-gene signature in the blood," said a researcher.

This signature, known as 'RISK4,' is a combination of four genes associated with inflammatory responses.

"The individual components of this signature may not be sufficient to deliver an accurate diagnosis of prediction, but a combination of these markers improves its accuracy," said the researcher.

Focusing on people who lived with someone with active TB, the researchers enrolled 4,466 HIV-negative participants and took their blood samples.

"We are hoping that primary health clinics will be able to use such a test and the reagents would then be readily available in that format, similar to the tests that are currently used to diagnose TB," he said.

Tuberculosis, caused by infection with Myobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb), is the world's leading cause of death brought on by a single pathogen.

More than 10 million new cases of TB are diagnosed each year, and almost two million people die from the disease. Globally, 1.7 billion people are estimated to be infected with M.tb, according to the study.
