Human papillomavirus infection: Know its line of treatment

One of the most common sexually transmitted infections, human papillomavirus is a viral infection. It is spread through simple skin to skin contact. If you have this infection, you will experience or see the symptoms years later. When the signs do occur, they are genital warts, small bumps, plantar warts etc. Notably, most of the HPV infections are benign and not malignant. If you have higher number of sexual partners or you are involving in sex with someone who have had various intimate partners, your chances of getting HPV infection is higher than those who are not involved in such acts. Also, if your immune system is weak, have damages skin in certain areas, or have contact with warts, you can develop warts too. Researchers Observe Dementia Reversal In Mice

Dementia patients have renewed hope of being cured of their ailment following a successful study in which researchers managed to reverse dementia in mice.

 

The study, which was conducted recently, represents the very first time that tau pathology reversal was documented in an animal model.

Tauopathy is a term used to refer to a specific type of neurodegenerative disease, which results in the second-most significant lesion that develops in Alzheimer’s sufferers’ brains. Tauopathy presents itself when proteins get tangled after dissociating from microtubules and form aggregates of protein on the brain that are insoluble.

"We show that we can intervene after the disease is established and pharmacologically rescue mice that have tau-induced memory deficits," said senior researcher. 

 

The breakthrough came through the observation of leukotrienes, which are inflammatory molecules that play a significant role in dementia, with particular reference to its latter stages of development.
"At the onset of dementia, leukotrienes attempt to protect nerve cells, but over the long term, they cause damage," the researcher explained. "Having discovered this, we wanted to know whether blocking leukotrienes could reverse the damage, whether we could do something to fix memory and learning impairments in mice having already abundant tau pathology."
It must be said that testing this particular hypothesis was no mean feat – the team used mice that were specifically engineered with the tau pathology as they aged. The researchers waited until the animals were 12 months old, or 60 years old in human years before they treated them with zileuton, a leukotriene inhibitor.

 

The mice used in the study were administered zileuton treatment over the course of 16 weeks, then put through a variety of mazes to test their memory. Zileuton-treated mice were seen to fare much better than those that were administered none. As a result, researchers believe that zileuton treatment can actually reverse memory deficiencies in mice.

Further analysis determined that mice treated with zileuton experienced a 90% reduction in leukotrienes compared to the mice that were administered none. What’s more is that the treated mice had a 50% lower concentration of insoluble tau – known to damage brain synapses – than their untreated counterparts.
"The inflammation was completely gone from tau mice treated with the drug. The therapy shut down inflammatory processes in the brain, allowing the tau damage to be reversed," the researcher said.

"Leukotrienes are in the lungs and the brain, but we now know that in addition to their functional role in asthma, they also have a functional role in dementia. This is an old drug for a new disease. The research could soon be translated to the clinic, to human patients with Alzheimer's disease,” he added.

'Artificial bones' generated from umbilical cord stem cells

Scientists have successfully developed 'artificial bones' from 

umbilical cord stem cells, paving way for repair of bones 

and replacement of lost cartilage in limbs. Scientists 

in  Spain, patented a new bio-material that facilitates 

generating bone tissue or artificial bones. The material 

consists of an activated carbon cloth support for cells that 

differentiate giving rise to a product that can promote bone 

growth.

Although the method has not yet been applied in living 

organisms, laboratory results are highly promising. In the 

future, they could help manufacture medicines for the 

repair of bone or osteochondrial, tumour or traumatic 

lesions and to replace lost cartilage in limbs, researchers 

said.

After obtaining artificial bones in the laboratory, the 

researchers' next step is to implant this bio-material in 

experimental animal models like rats or rabbits to see if it 

can regenerate bone in them.

The scientists have made this important scientific 

breakthrough after years of research in cell biology, radio-

biology and materials studies. No alternative materials are 

currently available on the market, nor have any been 

described in the literature, researchers said.

Precedents exist in the development of materials that fulfil 

the basic function of stimulating cell differentiation but a 

biologically complex material similar to bone tissue has 

never before been produced "ex vivo".

The method of stem cell differentiation uses a three-

dimensional support and facilitates obtaining cell types 

implicated in bone regeneration in cell culture conditions 

not requiring additional differentiation factors or factors 

that differ from those present in the cell culture serum.

Thanks to this invention, a bio-material consisting of stem 

cells supported on activated carbon cloth and capable of 

generating a product in which osteochondrial and 

mineralised extracellular organic matrix lineage cells exist, 

can be obtained, researchers said. The patent developed in 

Granada could have numerous applications in stem cell use 

in regenerative medicine, as well as in treating bone tissue 

and cartilage lesion problems.

Sex 'superbug' feared to be 'more infectious than AIDS'

Health officials are warning that two cases of a so-called 'sex superbug' have been confirmed in Hawaii.

Hawaii News Now reports that the 'sex superbug' is a resistant strain of gonorrhea.

The 'sex superbug' called H041 was first discovered in Japan in 2011. It spread to Hawaii, and has now surfaced in California and Norway.

Doctors are warning that an antibiotic-resistant strain of gonorrhoea, now considered a superbug, has the potential to be as deadly as the AIDS virus.

 

Gonorrhea is the second most commonly reported sexually transmitted infection in North America.  

This might be a lot worse than AIDS in the short run because the bacteria is more aggressive and will affect more people quickly.

Getting gonorrhea from this strain might put someone into septic shock and death in a matter of days,’ said a Dr. ‘This is very dangerous.’ 

Although no deaths from HO41 have been reported as yet, experts say avoiding the disease completely is the best course of action.

People need to practice safe sex, like always. Anyone beginning a new relationship should get tested along with their partner.

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease that has been known since medieval times. Sometimes known as ‘the clap,’ the infection can result in painful sores and genital discharge, and is associated with ectopic pregnancies and sterility in both men and women.
