The Next Time You Put Sunscreen, Don’t Forget These Spots

Spending time outside in the sun is great for your mental and physical health. Health experts say that soaking in the sun outdoors doesn’t just get you a good dose of vitamin D, it also helps reduce stress and keeps you physically active.

As summer hits its peak, many of us will be heading out a little more to spend some time in the sun, albeit with precautions because of the pandemic.

Now, we don't need to remind you to apply sunscreen lotion on your body during the summer season to protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun. Sunscreens are great. They filter or screen the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays and prevent sunburn and even skin cancer. The sun’s UV rays are the major cause of skin cancer and doctors say that sunscreens are a terrific tool to decrease your risk of skin cancers and skin pre-cancers. The Skin Cancer Foundation states that daily use of SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 sunscreen can reduce your risk of developing certain types of skin cancers by about 40 percent, and lower your melanoma risk by 50 percent. They can also help prevent premature skin aging caused by the sun.

However, while you may be slathering your skin with sunscreen, are you sure you are protecting all the critical parts of your body? Usually, we tend to apply sunscreen lotion on our face, hands, arms, legs, and chest. But dermatologists say that there are some common portions on our bodies that many people forget to apply sunscreen to. Let’s take a look at some of them.

1. Ears
Research has shown that skin cancer can occur in any part of the ear. This includes the middle part (also known as the conchal bowl), which is reasonably protected from the sun. Precancerous abrasions too are commonly found in this area. So even if you are wearing a hat or a baseball cap while being out in the sun, your ears might be exposed. Make sure to thoroughly cover the top, back, and middle parts of the ears with sunscreen. This is particularly essential for people with shorter hair as their ears have higher chances of being exposed to the sun.

2. Eyelids
Dermatologists say that eyelids are possibly the most overlooked when it comes to sun protection. It’s estimated that almost 3% of all skin cancers develop here. You can, of course, protect your eyelids in summer by wearing sunglasses. But what if you forgot them? Or what if you fall asleep on the beach without them? That can be dangerous as your eyelids can get severely burned. Experts recommend getting an ophthalmologist-approved SPF 30 lotion and applying it gently on this delicate area.

3. The tops of your feet
Sunscreen, areas, tops of your feet

While the soles of our feet are protected against the sun’s ultraviolet light with a thick layer of dead skin cells, the top part tends to be highly exposed during the summer season as many of us prefer to wear sandals, flip flops, or skin-bearing footwear when out instead of shoes. And that’s one part that often gets neglected when we are putting on sunscreen. So if you don’t want to have a nasty red and painful sunburn on the top of your feet, or get some ugly sandal or shoe pattern marks there, always cover the area properly with sunscreen.

4. Scalp
Your hair does provide a bit of protection from UV rays, but you still need to be extra careful. Particularly if you have thinning hair or are bald. Getting a sunburn on your head can be quite painful and annoying as the scalp begins to peel and it looks like you have a horrible case of dandruff. It’s hence better to protect yourself by spraying some sunscreen on the top of your head whenever you plan on being outside for a long time. Sure, it might make your hair a little greasy and goopy, but at least you will have that extra layer of protection. You can wear a hat, of course, but not everyone is comfortable with that.

Dermatologists recommend a gel-based sunscreen to more effectively cover and protect this area.

5. Around the eyes and the lips
Sunscreen, areas, lip balm
Apart from protecting your eyelids with sunscreen, it’s equally important to apply the lotion around the eyes and lips. These are vulnerable areas and are often neglected while applying sunscreen as people usually focus on the cheeks, the nose, and the forehead. But this often leads to cases of fine and ugly lines around the eyes and the lips in many people after their day out in the sun.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the majority of lip cancers appear on the lower lip, and the leading risk factor for it is UV radiation from the sun. Lip balms with SPF protection should help. Or simply coat your lips finely with a good sunscreen.

6. The lower leg
The lower part of the leg doesn't sunburn frequently and that’s why it’s usually the last area that people put sunscreen on or just neglect it. However, doctors report that a very high rate of skin cancer occurs in the lower leg. This happens because it tends to get exposed with shorts and skirts. While rubbing sunscreen on your lower legs, be sure to also cover the back of your knees as that’s another tender spot that’s commonly forgotten.

7. Around the armpits
Another place that’s usually overlooked while wearing sunscreen is the armpits. The folds of skin on the shoulder and arm area surrounding the armpits are also often forgotten during sunscreen application. But getting a sunburn there would be a super painful experience as you wouldn’t be able to even move your hands around comfortably. Even if you do apply the lotion to your armpits and underarms, it can wear off in the summer because of sweating. So remember to keep applying sunscreen to these areas throughout the day.

Bottom Line:
Skin cancers can occur anywhere. Even in the areas that don’t get sun. So never forget to put a thick layer of sunscreen on all exposed skin whenever you head out on a hot summer day. If you are outside for a long time, then it’s important to reapply the lotion about every two hours. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. Also, make sure you check the sunscreen’s expiration date before using it.

Shaking Your Head to Remove Water from Ears Can Cause Brain Damage, Study Suggests

Shaking head is one of the most common methods people use to get rid of water in their ears, but it can also cause complications as researchers have found that trapped water in the ear canals can cause infection and brain damage.

Researchers  revealed that shaking the head to free trapped water can cause brain damage in small children.

"Our research mainly focuses on the acceleration required to get the water out of the ear canal," said a researcher and study author.

"The critical acceleration that we obtained experimentally on glass tubes and 3D printed ear canals was around the range of 10 times the force of gravity for infant ear sizes, which could cause damage to the brain," he said.

For adults, the acceleration was lower due to the larger diameter of the ear canals. They said the overall volume and position of the water in the canal changes the acceleration needed to remove it.
"From our experiments and theoretical model, we figured out that surface tension of the fluid is one of the crucial factors promoting the water to get stuck in ear canals," said the researcher.

Luckily, the researchers said there is a solution that does not involve any head shaking.

"Presumably, putting a few drops of a liquid with lower surface tension than water, like alcohol or vinegar, in the ear would reduce the surface tension force allowing the water to flow out," he said.

Candida Auris: A fungus that's killing the world quietly

A deadly, drug-resistant fungus is infecting patients in hospitals and nursing homes around the world. The fungus seems to have emerged in several locations at once, not from a single source. The germ, a fungus called Candida auris, preys on people with weakened immune systems, and it is quietly spreading across the globe.

Risk of Candida Auris

Typically, Candida auris infections occur after a patient has been in a healthcare facility for several weeks, according to a report. The most commonly reported infections have been in wounds, bloodstreams, and ears. Doctors have found the fungus in people's urine and respiratory tracts, but it is unclear whether the fungus just hangs out in those places without causing trouble. For now, if your immune system is strong, your chances of getting a life-threatening Candida auris infection are very low. Risk goes up if you have a chronic disease like diabetes mellitus or have had recent surgery, recent antibiotic treatment, or a central venous catheter.

Unbeatable

An epidemiologist, said she now saw C. auris as 'the top' threat among resistant infections. "It’s pretty much unbeatable and difficult to identify," she said.
Nearly half of patients who contract C. auris die within 90 days, according to the C.D.C. Yet the world’s experts have not nailed down where it came from in the first place.

What are the symptoms
The symptoms — fever, aches and fatigue — are seemingly ordinary, but when a person gets infected, particularly someone already unhealthy, such commonplace symptoms can be fatal.
The earliest known case in the United States involved a woman who arrived at a hospital on May 6, 2013, seeking care for respiratory failure. She was 61 and from the United Arab Emirates, and she died a week later, after testing positive for the fungus.

Where did it come from?

The first time doctors encountered C. auris was in the ear of a woman in Japan in 2009 (auris is Latin for ear). It seemed innocuous at the time, a cousin of common, easily treated fungal infections.
Three years later, it appeared in an unusual test result in the lab of  a microbiologist in Netherlands, who was analysing a bloodstream infection in 18 patients from four hospitals in India. Soon, new clusters of C. auris seemed to emerge with each passing month in different parts of the world.

The C.D.C. investigators theorized that C. auris started in Asia and spread across the globe. But when the agency compared the entire genome of auris samples from India and Pakistan, Venezuela, South Africa and Japan, it found that its origin was not a single place, and there was not a single auris strain.

Drug resistant fungus

Simply put, fungi, just like bacteria, are evolving defenses to survive modern medicines.
For decades, public health experts have warned that the overuse of antibiotics was reducing the effectiveness of drugs that have lengthened life spans by curing bacterial infections once commonly fatal. But lately, there has been an explosion of resistant fungi as well, adding a new and frightening dimension to a phenomenon that is undermining a pillar of modern medicine.

Cleaning your ears with earbuds may be really dangerous!

Our ENT surgeon already advised us not to use cotton buds , hair pins or any object to clean the ears. By doing so, we can by mistake cause some minor injury to our ear canal, leading to infections. But the story below can be an extreme case, but just want one to take precaution.

Whenever you feel your ears are dirty or slightly blocked, do you pick up a cotton swab and start digging into them to clean them? It is okay if you do because most people do the same and have been taught to do it since childhood. However, these innocent looking cotton swabs may actually be more dangerous than they let on.

According to a report published, a man in the UK has sworn to never touch an earbud again when he developed a life-threatening infection due to it. The publication reports that the tip of the cotton swab got stuck in the man's ear while cleaning it, something he did not even realise and led to the development of an infection in his skull.

The 31-year-old man was rushed to the hospital emergency room when he had a seizure and collapsed. In ten days that finally led to the seizure, the man had complained of pain in his left ear and a discharge that was coming out of it. He also experienced severe headaches, vomits, and even started to forget people's names.

The man previously had several treatments on his left ear due to infections and therefore did not take the problem much seriously, thinking it could be one of those. However, when the doctors scanned his brain and ear, they found inflammation with pus in the bones of his skull close to the left ear canal. The infection that had probably started in the ear canal had spread to his skull.

The doctors had to perform minor surgery to treat the problem and that is when they found the tip of the cotton swab covered in ear wax and debris and concluded that this could have aggravated the problem and even led to the spread of the infection.

PAY HEED TO THE WARNING SOUNDS FROM DIFFERENT PARTS OF OUR BODIES !

Often, at unanticipated moments, our body can make all kinds of weird and abnormal sounds. All these sounds, and others, just appear out of nowhere. However, these sounds can also be our body's way of signaling to us that something is wrong. To understand what these sounds are, read below to know in detail and when to contact the Dr.

1. Popping or cracking sounds from the knees and ankles.

These sounds can suddenly appear as we stretch our legs or fold them in a sharp movement in preparation for walking or sitting. There are 3 different reasons for these, and they're usually natural: The tendons may latch on to the joints during movement, the explosion of small 'air' bubbles caught inside the liquid between the joints or a small deviation of the joints from their location. At times, stretching the joints helps, as it helps to grease the worn out knee, ankle joints.
As we get older, these sounds are more frequent, unless these sounds are accompanied by pain, don't worry. If pain follows the sound, with swelling in the joints, then it is time to see your Dr.

2. Growling and gurgling sounds from the stomach

"My stomach is growling, it must be time to eat" - this will be the first thought jumping into our head when our stomach starts making weird noises. Usually these sounds are caused between meals when the digestive system goes through a series of intense cramps, often loud ones, which are getting rid of the unwanted materials accumulated in the stomach, making room for new food.
But not always the sounds mean hunger, it can be signs that the digestive system is having problem in digesting certain foods. Only when you're hungry, when you hear those sounds, rush to the pantry to have a quick bite.
Certain foods and drinks- carbonated drinks, some gas producing foods, processed carbs and dairy products may also lead us to an embarrassing situation by these sounds, especially when we're meeting officials or strangers.
When such sounds come along with bloating sensation, stomach aches and watery sound when you press the stomach, it is better to see the Dr., as at times, it may be over-contracting of the bowels or some obstruction.

3. Buzzing, ringing and humming in the ears

Sometimes, without being ready for it, a high and lasting beep or buzzing will appear in our ears. After a few seconds or minutes it will just disappear. This sound, which may be alarming, is called tinnitus.
We hear it when the brain identifies electrical signals as sounds. At times, our outer ear is damaged due to exposure to loud sounds, or lack of sleep, pressure tension and or an overdose of caffeine.
A change in lifestyle, like having good sleep at night, using ear plugs to reduce loud noises, and reducing caffeine intake helps. When the sound is rare, don't worry.
It is time to see your ENT Dr., when you feel the tinnitus for a long time, at a loud volume and in one ear, this could be a symptom of an infection or more significant damage to the hearing system. If needed, hearing aids or surgery may help.

 4. Cracking or clicking sounds from the shoulder
While we lift, turn or move our arm forward, we may hear a clicking noise from the shoulder. When this sound comes without pain, it shouldn't bother you. It comes as a result of rubbing between the swiveling muscle and the shoulder joint, and it most appears naturally as part of getting older.
Repetitive straining of the shoulder either by throwing for sports persons,  or lifting heavy objects, can cause inflammation at times tear to the tendon or the cartilage, resulting in pain. Then it is better to consult the Dr.

5. Clicking or other sounds from the jaw

Between our jaws lies a disc made from fibers of bone tissue. This disk slides between the jaws and helps them open smoothly. Sometimes, the fibers of the disc may change their shape, especially if they have been stretch too much. In such a case, the disc might get a concave shape that will cause disruption when we open our mouth. The lower jaw will move on its concave parts, deviate from its natural track and will not sit exactly under the upper jaw. This will cause the click and noises you hear. If this happens rarely, have no tension about it. One thing, always remember, never to open our mouth too wide, such that our jaw joints are stretched.
If the sounds are loud and you're not able to close your mouth, and also in pain, then you may have over-extended your  disc fibres. if this happens, see your dentist at once.

6. Beeping or cracking noise while turning your upper body

When a sharp turning motion occurs in the upper body, there may come out a beeping noise. Don't panic, your body isn't falling apart - this is a normal phenomenon that occurs when air leaves the body - or when the air in the lungs or the stomach passes through narrow air passageways.Don't panic, you may continue your exercise but if you hear beeps and have problem breathing, then you may be suffering from other problems, like asthma, then it is best to avoid those exercises.

7. A clicking or cracking from the elbow

Besides the wearing out of the elbow, which may cause these sounds, there are various disorders and syndromes that may cause an elbow to thicken and become stiff, and so ever increase the noises and sounds.
When moving your elbows, the sounds are accompanied by pain, or you feel that elbow is getting ' locked', it could mean an inflammation of the cartilage or the nerves, so best to see your Dr. at once.
 8. A loud thundering during sleep
Similar to tinnitus, this is an internal beeping created by the brain and perceived as if by the ears. There is another phenomenon, much scarier, which occurs in the brain and is called "exploded head syndrome". This happens during deep sleep, when you suddenly hear a very strong thundering noise, which causes you to wake up in a panic. People have described this phenomenon as a pistol shot, an explosion, a firework going off or even a very loud clapping. This may be scary, but it isn't harmful and we still don't know why it happens.
One theory is, as the body gets ready for sleep, the brainstem is responsible for shutting down the various brain systems, such as the hearing, visual and motor nerves. When something in this process goes wrong, all the systems shut at once, which causes the sudden noise in our head. This phenomenon isn't common, but it happens more to people of ages 50 and up than to younger folks. Many claim this is mainly caused by stress, tension and a lack of sleep hours.
 9. Beeping while coughing
When our airways are blocked -either due to infection, allergy or by breathlessness - the air inside them gets compacted, and so when we breath out hard, such as during a cough, this sound is created. In any case, this sound must be checked because in most cases it is abnormal and unnatural. If you suffer this kind of cough for more than 4 weeks (for instance, after a bad cold) and it shows no signs of improving, you may suffer from one of the aforementioned conditions which may cause pneumonia or asthma.
10. Hearing your heartbeat in your ears
If during the day, or close to sleeping time, you've felt the beating or your heart right inside your ears, you may need to cut down on your caffeine intake or go on a vacation to relax. This phenomenon of hearing your heartbeat in your ears occurs when the heart rhythm or blood pressure grow stronger or faster - and these lead to the blood flow being stronger and louder. Drinking alcohol or caffeine, consuming sweets or have an anxious state of mind - may raise the heart beat and blood pressure.

If this happens often, it may be a sign that you are suffering from problems in blood flow - one of the risk factors for a heart condition. In other cases it may be a sign for pressure in the spine fluid, which can lead to very serious conditions or even blindness.
