Vehicular emission weakens bones, speeds up ageing

Living in polluted cities is harmful for health. Earlier several studies have shown air pollution causes a range of medical issues such as lung cancer, stroke, heart diseases, asthma, dementia, depression et al. Now, a new study has warned that inhalation of toxic airborne particles emitted by diesel and petrol vehicles can weaken bones and speed up the ageing process.

Researchers came to this disturbing conclusion after studying the health of nearly 4,000 residents from 28 villages just outside the city of Hyderabad, in southern India.

The researchers, whose study is published in the JAMA Network Open journal observed that those who inhaled more toxic airborne particles had less bone mass in their spines and hips. Household air pollution did not have a clear association with bone mass.

The bone mass loss due to the oxidative stress and inflammation was caused by the toxic particulate matters, said the study led by Otavio T Ranzani, from Barcelona Institute for Global Health, Barcelona, Spain. Osteoporosis is a health condition that weakens bones, making them fragile and more likely to break.

The researchers took measurements of PM2.5 and black carbon in the atmosphere in each village. Total 28 villages were studied. PM2.5 is the finest type of particulate matter, while black carbon is a larger toxin. Both come mainly from petrol and diesel vehicle exhausts. Analysis revealed average PM2.5 exposure was 33 micrograms per meter cubed (ug/m3) — far above the maximum 10ug/m3 levels recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO), said the researchers Carles Milà from National Institute of Nutrition, Indian Council of Medical Research, Hyderabad and Bharati Kulkarni from Department of Non-communicable Disease Epidemiology, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London.

The researchers had cross-referenced pollution levels with X-rays measuring bone mass in participant’s lower back and hip. Results showed that exposure to air pollution were associated with lower levels of bone mass. For every 3ug/m3 increase in fine particulate matter, there was a decrease of -0.57g of bone mass in the spine and -0.13g in the hip, said the study titled ‘Association of Ambient and Household Air Pollution With Bone Mineral Content Among Adults in Peri-urban South India’.

An increase of 1ug/m3 of carbon saw bone density shrink by -1.13g in the spine and -0.35g in the hip, said Ranzani adding that “this study contributes to the limited and inconclusive literature on air pollution and bone health.”

According to the WHO, air pollution causes an estimated seven million premature deaths a year worldwide — one third of deaths from stroke, lung cancer and heart disease.

The WHO also points out that every day around 93 per cent of the world’s children under the age of 15 years (1.8 billion children) breathe air that is so polluted it puts their health and development at serious risk. Tragically, many of them die: WHO estimates that in 2016, 600,000 children died from acute lower respiratory infections caused by polluted air.

A recent report by the global health agency notes that when pregnant women are exposed to polluted air, they are more likely to give birth prematurely, and have small, low birth-weight children. “Air pollution also impacts neuro-development and cognitive ability and can trigger asthma, and childhood cancer. Children who have been exposed to high levels of air pollution may be at greater risk for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease later in life,” said the report.

More Cancer Cases Amongst Women With Sleep Apnea

Women with severe sleep apnea appear to be at an elevated risk of getting cancer, a study shows. No causal relationship is demonstrated, but the link between nocturnal hypoxia in women and higher cancer risk is still clear.

"It's reasonable to assume that sleep apnea is a risk factor for cancer, or that both conditions have common risk factors, such as overweight. On the other hand, it is less likely that cancer leads to sleep apnea," notes the author.

The research,  is based on analyses of registry data, collected in the European database ESADA, on a total of some 20,000 adult patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). About 2 percent of them also had a cancer diagnosis.

As expected, advanced age was associated with elevated cancer risk, but adjusting the data for age, gender, body mass index (BMI), smoking, and alcohol consumption nevertheless showed a possible link between intermittent hypoxia at night and higher cancer prevalence. The connection applied mainly to women, and was weaker in men.

"Our results indicate a cancer risk that's elevated two- to three-fold among women with pronounced sleep apnea. It's impossible to say for sure what causes underlie the association between sleep apnea and cancer, but the indication means we need to study it in more depth," the author says.

"The condition of sleep apnea is well known to the general public and associated with snoring, daytime fatigue, and elevated risk of cardiovascular disease, especially in men. Our research paves the way for a new view -- that sleep apnea may possibly be connected with increased cancer risk, especially in women," he says.

Previous studies have shown that, more often than others, people with sleep apnea have a cancer diagnosis in their medical history. Research in this area is expanding, while the gender aspects have hardly been explored.

"Above all, the focus has been on the connection with one form of cancer: malignant melanoma. Cancer of the breast or womb may now become a new area. There may be a combined effect of female sex hormones and stress activation, induced by nocturnal hypoxia in sleep apnea, that can trigger cancer development or a weakening of the body's immune system."

Candida Auris: A fungus that's killing the world quietly

A deadly, drug-resistant fungus is infecting patients in hospitals and nursing homes around the world. The fungus seems to have emerged in several locations at once, not from a single source. The germ, a fungus called Candida auris, preys on people with weakened immune systems, and it is quietly spreading across the globe.

Risk of Candida Auris

Typically, Candida auris infections occur after a patient has been in a healthcare facility for several weeks, according to a report. The most commonly reported infections have been in wounds, bloodstreams, and ears. Doctors have found the fungus in people's urine and respiratory tracts, but it is unclear whether the fungus just hangs out in those places without causing trouble. For now, if your immune system is strong, your chances of getting a life-threatening Candida auris infection are very low. Risk goes up if you have a chronic disease like diabetes mellitus or have had recent surgery, recent antibiotic treatment, or a central venous catheter.

Unbeatable

An epidemiologist, said she now saw C. auris as 'the top' threat among resistant infections. "It’s pretty much unbeatable and difficult to identify," she said.
Nearly half of patients who contract C. auris die within 90 days, according to the C.D.C. Yet the world’s experts have not nailed down where it came from in the first place.

What are the symptoms
The symptoms — fever, aches and fatigue — are seemingly ordinary, but when a person gets infected, particularly someone already unhealthy, such commonplace symptoms can be fatal.
The earliest known case in the United States involved a woman who arrived at a hospital on May 6, 2013, seeking care for respiratory failure. She was 61 and from the United Arab Emirates, and she died a week later, after testing positive for the fungus.

Where did it come from?

The first time doctors encountered C. auris was in the ear of a woman in Japan in 2009 (auris is Latin for ear). It seemed innocuous at the time, a cousin of common, easily treated fungal infections.
Three years later, it appeared in an unusual test result in the lab of  a microbiologist in Netherlands, who was analysing a bloodstream infection in 18 patients from four hospitals in India. Soon, new clusters of C. auris seemed to emerge with each passing month in different parts of the world.

The C.D.C. investigators theorized that C. auris started in Asia and spread across the globe. But when the agency compared the entire genome of auris samples from India and Pakistan, Venezuela, South Africa and Japan, it found that its origin was not a single place, and there was not a single auris strain.

Drug resistant fungus

Simply put, fungi, just like bacteria, are evolving defenses to survive modern medicines.
For decades, public health experts have warned that the overuse of antibiotics was reducing the effectiveness of drugs that have lengthened life spans by curing bacterial infections once commonly fatal. But lately, there has been an explosion of resistant fungi as well, adding a new and frightening dimension to a phenomenon that is undermining a pillar of modern medicine.

Food Additive in Frozen Meat, Crackers Worsens Flu

A common food additive found in many products, including frozen meat, crackers and fried foods, could weaken the human immune system against flu, which accounts for 290,000-650,000 deaths globally every year, say researchers.
Besides increasing the severity of flu symptoms, the study found exposure to the compound — tert-butylhydroquinone (tBHQ) — could reduce effectiveness of flu vaccine through its effects on T cells, a vital component of the immune system.

During the study, mice fed tBHQ-spiked diet were slower to activate both helper T cells and killer T cells, causing slower clearance of the virus.

"Our studies showed mice on a tBHQ diet had a weakened immune response to influenza (flu) infection," said a researcher.

"In our mouse model, tBHQ suppressed function of helper and killer T cells. It led to more severe symptoms during a subsequent influenza infection," he said.

When the mice were re-infected with a different but related strain of influenza, those on the tBHQ diet had a longer illness and lost more weight. This suggests that tBHQ impaired the "memory response" that typically primes the immune system to fight a second infection, he said.

tBHQ is an additive used to prevent spoilage, with a maximum allowed concentration of 200 parts per million in food products.

Since tBHQ is not always listed on ingredient labels, the best way to limit tBHQ exposure is to be conscious about food choices. A low-fat diet and less consumption of processed snacks will help reduce tBHQ consumption, he suggested.

Annual flu shot significantly reduces the length and severity of the illness and prevents influenza infection.

Stress, Sadness Really Can Break Your Heart

Both doctors and patients have been worried for long, if stress can break one's heart. Sadly, but true, as recently it was confirmed by researchers. It is a rare condition and extreme stress can literally break your heart. Such stress can be caused, not only by a death of a loved one, but health problems, job loss and other major stressors have been linked to the condition.

The syndrome known as cardiomyopathy, mainly affects women. As the medical literature on broken heart syndrome are few, more new cases are springing up each day, with additional information about how it happens and the risks associated with it.

Recently, a 63 year old woman, who is a metastatic breast cancer patients was reported to have broken heart syndrome.

Over the years, researchers have found those patients undergoing cancer treatment, fir the criteria for broken heart syndrome. Researchers say, when cancer patients complain of chest pain, they'ld look into the other problem too.

When a patient’s heart “breaks,” the main pumping chamber, the left ventricle, weakens, leading to pain and shortness of breath. The condition is reversible and temporary but can lead to complications similar to those after a heart attack. Researchers feel it's caused by a flood of adrenaline ( hormone), which is produced during a stressful situation which stuns the heart.

A 63 year old lady was diagnosed with broken heart syndrome after the death of her pet dog. The dog's death was just one of the challenges, another her husband was to retire shortly. Some property deal wasn't happening the way, she wanted it. Her son was suffering from sever back problem and her son-in-law lost his job, to make the matters worse.

More than 6,200 cases of broken heart syndrome were reported in 2012, up from about 300 in 2006, says a Dr.. Most patients are women. The increase, he says, is likely because more people know about the condition.

It isn't always the death of a pet, health concerns may be the reason for broken heart syndrome. It may be any problem that can give a lot of tension to the person.

Severe pain can trigger the syndrome. So can an asthma attack, a fierce argument, a surprise party, or even public speaking.Symptoms mimic a heart attack -- most often, chest pains and shortness of breath. Nausea, vomiting, and palpitations can also happen. But only testing can show the diagnosis, says the Dr.

Patients usually get the same medications used to treat congestive heart failure to support and strengthen the heart. Death is uncommon in people who don't have complications, with less than a 3% fatality rate.

What Are the Risk?

The news is not as good for people who get complications, which affect about 1 in 10 cases. One example is cardiogenic shock, which happens when the heart can't pump enough blood to the body. According to researchers, the number of people who die due to other complications are more and as each patient is different, each patient needs to be evaluated and monitored closely and monitored closely over the years.

Prevention Is Always Better Than Cure

Stopping stress, or managing it, before the overwhelming stage is, of course, the best advice. Though it is difficult, one can learn it. One needs to follow the doctor's advise closely, have a hobby to keep themselves busy and more important a good social circle,as interactions with others helps a lot, knowing how each one is coping with their problems.
