Dengue Fever Prevention Tips: Safeguard Your Family With Simple preventive measures

Dengue fever prevention steps can help you deal with the spread. You can follow some simple precautions to protect yourself during the spread. Read on to know some simple tips which you must follow.

Every year dengue outbreak results in a huge number of deaths all over India. Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection which spreads quickly. Implementation of prevention steps can help control its spread up to an extent. Every year during the time of the outbreak, you must follow some precautions to protect yourself and your family from dengue fever. Dengue fever starts with some simple symptoms which people usually ignore at first. So, it is always better to prevent the disease than treating it. The preventive measures for dengue mainly include steps to stop mosquito breeding and ways to prevent mosquito bites.

Simple prevention steps for dengue fever

1. Prevent mosquito bites

Mosquitoes are present everywhere. You must protect yourself from mosquito bites as much as possible. Wear full sleeved clothes and try to cover all your body parts. While sleeping, you can use a mosquito net to ensure a good night’s sleep without mosquito bites. You can also apply mosquito repellent creams before stepping out.

2. Keep the indoors safe

Your house can also promote breeding of mosquitoes which can make your very own house unsafe. There are various factors which can contribute to indoor breeding of mosquitoes. Cleaning your house is the first and the most basic step advised to stop dengue spread. Stagnant water is the basic ground for mosquito breeding. So, do not forget to clean pots or container where water is likely to collect. Also, try not to store water to use later.

3. Keep a check on your doors and windows

Open doors and windows can directly invite mosquitoes to your house. Keep the doors and windows closed when not in use. If you have a broken window or a door, get it repaired immediately before it allows the mosquitoes to enter your house.

4. Know the symptoms

Early detection and treatment can help you fight the condition in a better way. It will prevent the situation and you can stop it from worsening. You must understand the early symptoms well so that you can treat it as early as possible.

Dengue fever symptoms
High fever, sharp headache, vomiting, pain behind the eyes, pain in muscles and joints and body rashes are some of the common symptoms.

5. Protect your children from mosquitoes

Children spend maximum time outdoors which increases their interaction with mosquitoes. From school to play time, time spent outdoors can increase the chances of getting dengue fever. Make your child wear full sleeved clothes and also use mosquito repellent. Do not allow them to spend time outside as much as possible. Try to involve your kids in indoor games.

What Is Dengue Fever?

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne virus affecting more than 390 million people each year. While the disease is generally mild, it can be deadly.
Recent research shows dengue is between 100 and 800 years old. It likely originated in Africa or Southeast Asia and was then carried to other parts of the world through travel and trade.
In recent years, dengue has spread to over 100 countries. Now, travelers to popular destinations like Brazil and India could contract the disease.
The virus is also known as ‘breakbone fever’ due to its symptoms.

What Are The Symptoms of Dengue?

Unlike other diseases, dengue has different symptoms depending on the stage it is in. According to the Centers for Disease Control, dengue’s most common symptoms are:

Key Facts

  • 1 in 4: About one in four people infected with dengue will get sick.
  • For people who get sick with dengue, symptoms can be mild or severe.
  • Severe dengue can be life-threatening within a few hours and often requires hospitalization.

Symptoms

  • Mild symptoms of dengue can be confused with other illnesses that cause fever, aches and pains, or a rash.
Graphic of human body showing most common symptom of dengue is fever with any of the following: eye pain, headache, muscle pain, rash, bone pain, nausea/vomiting, joint pain
The most common symptom of dengue is fever with any of the following:
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Rash
  • Aches and pains (eye pain, typically behind the eyes, muscle, joint, or bone pain)
  • Any warning sign
Symptoms of dengue typically last 2–7 days. Most people will recover after about a week.

Treatment

  • There is no specific medication to treat dengue.
  • Treat the symptoms of dengue and see your healthcare provider.

If you think you have dengue

  • See a healthcare provider if you develop a fever or have symptoms of dengue. Tell him or her about your travel.
  • Rest as much as possible.
  • Take acetaminophen (also known as paracetamol outside of the United States) to control fever and relieve pain.
    • Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen!
  • Drink plenty of fluids such as water or drinks with added electrolytes to stay hydrated.
  • For mild symptoms, care for a sick infant, child, or family member at home.
Symptoms of dengue can become severe within a few hours. Severe dengue is a medical emergency.

Severe dengue

  • About 1 in 20 people who get sick with dengue will develop severe dengue.
  • Severe dengue is a more serious form of disease that can result in shock, internal bleeding, and even death.
  • You are more likely to develop severe dengue if you have had a dengue infection before.
  • Infants and pregnant women are at increased risk for developing severe dengue.

Symptoms of severe dengue

Warning signs of severe dengue

Candida Auris: A fungus that's killing the world quietly

A deadly, drug-resistant fungus is infecting patients in hospitals and nursing homes around the world. The fungus seems to have emerged in several locations at once, not from a single source. The germ, a fungus called Candida auris, preys on people with weakened immune systems, and it is quietly spreading across the globe.

Risk of Candida Auris

Typically, Candida auris infections occur after a patient has been in a healthcare facility for several weeks, according to a report. The most commonly reported infections have been in wounds, bloodstreams, and ears. Doctors have found the fungus in people's urine and respiratory tracts, but it is unclear whether the fungus just hangs out in those places without causing trouble. For now, if your immune system is strong, your chances of getting a life-threatening Candida auris infection are very low. Risk goes up if you have a chronic disease like diabetes mellitus or have had recent surgery, recent antibiotic treatment, or a central venous catheter.

Unbeatable

An epidemiologist, said she now saw C. auris as 'the top' threat among resistant infections. "It’s pretty much unbeatable and difficult to identify," she said.
Nearly half of patients who contract C. auris die within 90 days, according to the C.D.C. Yet the world’s experts have not nailed down where it came from in the first place.

What are the symptoms
The symptoms — fever, aches and fatigue — are seemingly ordinary, but when a person gets infected, particularly someone already unhealthy, such commonplace symptoms can be fatal.
The earliest known case in the United States involved a woman who arrived at a hospital on May 6, 2013, seeking care for respiratory failure. She was 61 and from the United Arab Emirates, and she died a week later, after testing positive for the fungus.

Where did it come from?

The first time doctors encountered C. auris was in the ear of a woman in Japan in 2009 (auris is Latin for ear). It seemed innocuous at the time, a cousin of common, easily treated fungal infections.
Three years later, it appeared in an unusual test result in the lab of  a microbiologist in Netherlands, who was analysing a bloodstream infection in 18 patients from four hospitals in India. Soon, new clusters of C. auris seemed to emerge with each passing month in different parts of the world.

The C.D.C. investigators theorized that C. auris started in Asia and spread across the globe. But when the agency compared the entire genome of auris samples from India and Pakistan, Venezuela, South Africa and Japan, it found that its origin was not a single place, and there was not a single auris strain.

Drug resistant fungus

Simply put, fungi, just like bacteria, are evolving defenses to survive modern medicines.
For decades, public health experts have warned that the overuse of antibiotics was reducing the effectiveness of drugs that have lengthened life spans by curing bacterial infections once commonly fatal. But lately, there has been an explosion of resistant fungi as well, adding a new and frightening dimension to a phenomenon that is undermining a pillar of modern medicine.

Laughter Is The Best Medicine

Who doesn't like to see a smiling face. It is said that if you smile, then another person smiles and soon there will be miles and miles of smile just because you smiled. It is said that when we smile, we use more facial muscles and one doesn't get wrinkles easily ! Isn't that a simple way to keep wrinkles away and feel young !

When we laugh, we forget all our aches and sorrows. One must be like a child who can easily laugh at the simplest of things, like you see a beautiful bird or pretty flower or see a child's pranks.Laughter is very important for living and is a vital part of healthy living. It helps in relieving tension, reducing  stress, making you relax, and increases your happiness. Here are some ways following which you can bring more laughter in your life.

Laugh tries to bring back old memories, helps to connect with our friends and dear ones. As when we are with them, we recollect old funny instances and can share a hearty laugh.

When you wish to read a book, choose something which has some comedy or something hilarious than reading crime stories.  In the same way, when you watch TV, try to watch a comedy show or movie, where you can laugh your heart out. Isn't laughing better than seeing those serials, where a mother-in-law is always shown as the most cruel lady in the world !

Your best moments can be spending time with children, as the modern kids come up with something so hilarious. Like, our grandson tells his mother, when she is angry with him, " mother your face doesn't look nice like that". So, instead of shouting at him, she starts laughing. Children start laughing at such simple things, like I taught our grandsons, some old games we used to play. They picked the words so fast, now when they see me in Whatsapp, tell me let us play those games !

Try playing some funny games even if you're an adult- like musical chair with some good music playing. There, you start tapping your feet to the music's beat and start shaking your legs or body ! Then when others get out, you laugh like a kid as you're not out ! Try recollecting those old games you played as a child, which sadly is forgotten these days, thanks to modern technology ! We used to play with 5 small round stones.  One has to roll the stones, try to pick one, which may be very close to another, then you've to throw the stone up and pick another together !

Laughter is one of the easiest thing in life. Try to laugh at the slightest thing, then you'll realise that you are not stressed, feel a lot lighter, happy and healthy too.

VARIOUS USES OF EPSOM SALT

Epsom Salt is the little-known mineral that can fix just about anything. Its chemical name is magnesium sulfate, and this natural remedy offers many health benefits.

Aches and Pains
1. Physical stress: Soak in a warm tub and add Epsom salts. When the salt is dissolved in the water, it is readily absorbed through the skin.  The magnesium ions can help with stress, as they promote serotonin production and lessen adrenaline impact. Magnesium also helps with the energy cell production, reducing restlessness and anxiety.

2. Pain and cramping: A long soak can also offer relief for pained muscles and inflamed joints. The therapeutic salt bath also works at soothing abdominal cramps, tension headaches, and tired feet.

3. Constipation: When ingested, Epsom salts also moonlight as saline laxatives. You can drink a cup of warm water with two tablespoons of salt dissolved in it to sooth constipation. However, it is not recommended that you use this remedy more than once per day and it's best to consult your doctor if symptoms persist.
Medical Purposes
4. Clean arteries: Epsom salts boosts the health of your arteries by decreasing inflammation and protecting your arteries' elasticity. This can help improve your circulation and ward off cardiovascular illness, with less risk of clots, plaque buildup, and arterial wall damage. To reap the benefits, soak in a bath of Epsom salts three to four times a week.

5. Blood sugar regulator: Both the magnesium and sulfate in Epsom salts help the body produce and use insulin better. With regular oral or transdermal Epsom salt intake, your blood sugar can be better regulated, resulting in improved daily energy levels and a lowered risk for diabetes.

6. Nerve function: Epsom salts facilitate many enzymatic functions. Their positive effects on the body include regulating fluid retention in cells and using calcium to transmit chemical signals in the nervous system.
First Aid
8. Splinters: Loosen a splinter by soaking the inflicted body part in warm water with Epsom salts. The mineral acts as an anti-inflammatory around the wound and will soften the splinter, allowing for easy removal.

9. Sprains and bruises: Adding two cups of the salt to a warm bath can help alleviate inflammation and pain caused by sprains and bruises. Soak in the tub and the pain will soon be lessened.

Beauty Routine
10. Exfoliate the skin: Take a handful of the salt and rub it gently over damp skin, to remove dead skin cells. Your skin will be left looking healthier and feeling soft. This method is suitable for your hands, feet and any other skin areas that need exfoliating.

11. Face cleanser: Add a teaspoon of Epsom salts to your regular cleanser or make your own clarifying treatment with this recipe:
1. Chop a ripe tomato finely and mix it with a pureed egg white.
2. Add to this half a teaspoon of vitamin B5 powder, 1 teaspoon aloe vera gel, 1 teaspoon of Epsom salts and a few drops of thyme essential oil.
3. Apply the mixture to your face and leave it on for 15 minutes.
4. Rinse it off with lukewarm water.

12. Loosen blackheads: You can use the salts to remove oil and dead skin cells from your pores. Exfoliate to remove any dead skin from around the blackheads. In half a cup of hot water, mix a teaspoon of Epsom salts with four drops of iodine, stirring until the salts are completely dissolved. Let the mixture cool down a bit and then massage it onto the blackheads. Let the treatment dry completely and then wash your face with warm water, patting dry with a cloth

13. Hair product buildup: Remove any excess hairspray or other styling products from your hair by mixing 1 cup of Epsom salt and 1 cup lemon juice into a gallon of water (3.8 liters). Let this solution sit for 24 hours before you start using it. Pour the concoction over your hair. Leave it in for 20 minutes and then wash and condition your hair after.

Around the House
14. Household hand wash: As an alternative to store-bought hand cleaners, mix Epsom salts with baby oil for soft and clean hands. Store in bottles and stash them next to the sinks in your home.

15. Gardening helper: You can use Epsom salts to help your garden grow. You can use it to fertilize plants and grass, facilitate plants nutrient absorption, prevent leaf curling, remove insects or stop a slug infestation.

16. Clean pots and pans: To treat really dirty dishes pour some Epsom salt into the water as it helps grime come off easier. The salt's abrasive texture helps loosen the food without leaving your pots and pans damaged.

17. Tile and grout cleaner: For an effective tile and grout dirt remover, mix equal parts Epsom salts and liquid dish detergent together. Scrub dirty or stained surfaces with this, allowing the mix to soak in for 2 minutes. The grime is loosened effortlessly. Rinse clean after.

18. Remove detergent buildup: Unwanted gunk builds up on the inside of your washing machine over time. Remove detergent buildup with Epsom salts to protect your washer and see it running efficiently. Run an empty cycle with hot water, a quart of white vinegar and a cup of Epsom salt. After a minute, stop the cycle and let the solution soak for an hour.
