Top 5 irreversible health conditions that STIs can give you

Sexually transmitted infections are usually manageable, but care should be taken to get proper and timely treatment. If ignored, they can result in life-threatening medical conditions.
Sexually transmitted infections are very common and are usually the result of unsafe sex. You may get these infections if you have unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex with an infected person. Another name for these infections is sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or venereal diseases (VD). Sometimes, these infections may also be transmitted through shared needles and via breastfeeding. A newborn may get them from an infected mother. Sometimes, a person suffering from some of these diseases may exhibit no symptoms. However, the silent symptoms make these sexually transmitted infections more complex and difficult to treat. If left untreated, they can cause irreversible damage to your body  and may even cause death. Here is a low-down on the irrevbersible health diseases you may end up with if sexually transmitted infections are not addressed on time.

Chlamydia

This is quite common. It affects both men and women. Chlamydia is dangerous because you may go for months without exhibiting any symptoms. Symptoms are usually an abnormal vaginal discharge and a burning sensation when urinating in women.

Men may notice a discharge from their penis, experience a burning sensation while urinating and pain and swelling in one or both testicles. Repeat infection is very common. Condoms, if properly used, may offer protection. You doctor may recommend antibiotics for treatment of this disease.

Health effects
: Repeat infection happens a lot in this disease. But your doctor can easily cure it with antibiotic medication. But if left untreated, it can cause permanent infertility in both men and women, put you at increased risk of contracting HIV. It also increases the risk of urethritis in men.

Other risks are pelvic Inflammatory disease and miscarriage and/or pre-term labour in women. If a mother has this disease then her baby may suffer from premature delivery, conjunctivitis, lung infections, pneumonia and ear infections.

Gonorrhea

This disease can be transmitted by sexual contact with an infected person through the penis, vagina, anus, mouth or eye. It affects the reproductive tract as well as the mucous membranes of the mouth, throat, eyes, and rectum. Though antibiotics can treat and cure gonorrhoea, many strains of this disease are now becoming antibiotic-resistant. If you practise unsafe sex, you must go in for regular screening.

Health effects:
If left untreated, this sexually transmitted disease can lead to scarring of the Fallopian tubes. It can cause ectopic pregnancies or miscarriage and infertility in women. Inflammation of the prostate, scarring of the urethra and infertility in men are common side-effects of this diseases. Babies born to mothers with this disease may suffer from blindness, serious joint infections and deadly blood infections.

Herpes

This is very common. This infection can lie dormant for years without exhibiting any symptoms. There is no cure for this disease though doctors may recommend antiviral drugs to shorten outbreaks and decrease infectiousness. They may also prescribe medication to relieve symptoms of redness, itchiness and tingling.

Health effects:
This disease is not life-threatening, but it is not curable either. But if you leave it untreated, outbreaks may become severe and you may suffer from open sores. This can put you at risk of other infections. Some herpes viruses, like HSV-1 and HSV-2, can cause meningitis and encephalitis. Even babies may be susceptible to these conditions if they contract herpes from their mother during childbirth.

Syphilis

This sexually transmitted diseases makes its presence felt via a painless sore on the genitals. In later stages it can manifest as a skin rash. This may disappear after some time with or without treatment. In fact, a person may not exhibit any symptoms for many years after this. In this late stage, say after maybe 20 years of getting infected, it can cause irreversible life-threatening complications. It can damage the brain, nerves, eyes or heart. Doctors use penicillin to treat this condition.

Health effects: If left untreated, this disease can manifest as soft, spongy balls of inflammation all over the body and bones. It can cause large sores on the skin and inside the body. This causes internal bleeding, enlargement of the liver and/or spleen, deformations, dementia, aneurysm, loss of motor functions, seizures and even death.

Chancroid

This condition is easily curable if treated properly. This bacterial infection causes open sores on or around the genitals of men and women. It is more prevalent in developing nations and among the poorer sections of people. Commercial sex workers are also more prone to this disease. This infection is also transmitted via skin-to-skin contact with an infected person. Your doctor will prescribe an antibiotic to treat this condition. In severe cases, it may require surgery.

Health effects: Left untreated, this disease may cause permanent scarring on the genitals of men and lead to serious complications and infections in women including infertility. It may also increase your risk of other STDs.

Hepatitis B

You may get this disease if you come in contact with infected semen, blood and other bodily fluids. You may get it if you have unprotected sex or use an unsterilised syringe. Transfusion with infected blood is also another way that you may get infected. Babies may get it from infected mothers. This can cause severe liver damage, and this can eventually lead to cancer. Symptoms are usually absent and, hence, a person may unknowingly pass it on to an unsuspecting partner.

Health effects: If left untreated, this condition can cause chronic liver disease and liver failure. It can lead to liver cancer and even death. Vaccines can prevent this disease. Usually, hepatitis B vaccinations come in three doses administered over several months for total immunity and protection from the virus.

The Link Between the Herpes Virus and Alzheimer's

More than 30 million people in the world are currently suffering from Alzheimer's disease, and to date, there is still no cure for it, only treatments that help reduce its symptoms. However, scientists are now working on different ways to cure the disease, and as a result of various experiments and observations, they get to know more about it, including the factors that may predict it even before its familiar symptoms appear.

In a recent study, evidence was found that the herpes virus was closely linked to Alzheimer's disease and that a drug that treated the virus could also help treat the devastating nerve disease. Because of the great importance of the issue and its impact on the health of adults today and ourselves in the future, it is recommended that you continue reading to learn more about the relationship between herpes and Alzheimer's.

What is the herpes virus?

Herpes is a whole family of viruses. Herpes simplex is manifested in the form of blisters in the skin, lips, eyelids, or genitals. Herpes simplex is also divided into 2 types, with herpes simplex 1 being the most common type and causing blisters on the lips, while herpes simplex 2 is considered to be a sexually transmitted disease.
Herpes simplex is a very contagious disease, and it passes through skin to skin contact or contact with objects that are infected from shared use, such as lipstick. When infected, the hereditary material is stored in the nervous system and tends to erupt with its familiar symptoms when the body is under stress, during transitional seasons, during illnesses accompanied by fever, and during periods of hormonal changes in the body.

What is the relationship between herpes and Alzheimer's?

As noted, the herpes virus attacks the nervous system and remains dormant until it erupts. In 1991, a study found that in many elderly people the virus was also found in the brain and in 1997 it was found that there was a link between its presence in the brain and the risk of Alzheimer's in people with a gene called APOE4, which is known to increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
According to the experts' hypothesis, the presence of the virus in the brain and its recurrent eruption cause cumulative damage, because the chances of suffering from Alzheimer's according to the observations are 12 times higher for APOE4 carriers who also suffer from herpes simplex 1, compared to people who do not have both cases together.

However, another study found that people suffering from the herpes virus suffer from increased production of amyloid beta protein and a very high amount of tau protein, which also endanger the brain and body in Alzheimer's disease.

Researchers believe that when the body gets older and the immune system weakens, the herpes virus can penetrate the brain through the nervous system, where it creates a dormant infection that is activated in stressful situations or when the brain suffers from other infections. Repeated outbreaks of the virus cause cumulative damage to the infected cells of the brain, leading eventually to Alzheimer's in people who have inherited the disease. People with a family history of Alzheimer's disease, who are also carriers of the herpes virus, may be particularly likely to suffer from Alzheimer's disease, even in their youth. It is therefore important to know the warning signs of Alzheimer's so that it can be identified in time and treated appropriately.

The significance of the findings regarding innovative treatment for Alzheimer's disease

Although all these findings sound very worrisome, they are also somewhat encouraging, because recent research indicates that Alzheimer's disease can be treated, or at least delayed, with treatment for the herpes virus. Fortunately, research has already been done on the subject, and it shows promising results - anti-herpes drug treatment has indeed helped to prevent Alzheimer's disease in the subjects. More research is underway, but Alzheimer's disease may be avoided in the near future with a simple herpes virus vaccine.

There are lots of reasons why Candida may manifest and Sugar is right up there. Excessive alcohol and caffeine consumption, lack of fresh fruit and veg and a leaky gut are some of the cited causes.
It manifests in your body as thrush. If you have a white coated tongue, headaches or brain fog, these are common signs.

Candida Albicans is a fungus that grows inside your gut. Normally, it is kept under control there by the healthy bacteria that lives in there , but some times the balance in your gut changes and the Candida can start to spread. A Candida overgrowth releases all kinds of toxic byproducts into your system and causes a wide variety of unpleasant symptoms.

Symptoms of Candida overgrowth-
1) recurrent yeast infections
2) Fatigue
3) Brain fog
4) Headaches
5) Digestive problems
6) Weakened immune system
7) Oral thrush
8) Recurring genital and urinary tract infections
9) Chronic sinus infections
10) Nail and fungus infections

Causes of Candida overgrowth
1) High sugar consumption- Candida cells feed on sugar. Sugary soft drinks and desserts gives your Candida just what it needs to expand throughout your gut.

2) Antibiotics- Antibiotics destroy the good bacteria that live in your gut and prevent Candida colonies from expanding.

3) Stress- It raises your blood sugar levels and damages your immune system by weakening your adrenal glands.

4) The contraceptive pill- The main ingredient in the pill is estrogen, which is known to promote the growth of yeast cells.

TREATMENT
The best way to treat Candidiasis is prevent recurring infections is to address the underlying cause.
The food you eat plays an important role in maintaining the balance of “good” and “bad” bacteria in your gut.
Refined sugars, carbs and high-lactose dairy products can encourage Candida and other “bad” microorganisms to grow .
Eating too many of these foods may promote infection if you have a suppressed immune system.
On the other hand, certain foods have specifically been shown to encourage “good” bacteria to grow and inhibit the growth of Candida.
The following foods have been shown to help fight Candida infections:
  • Garlic: Garlic contains an anti-fungal substance called allicin, which has been shown to act against Candida yeasts in animal and test-tube studies .
  • Coconut oil: Coconut oil is high in lauric acid, which has been shown to fight Candida infections in multiple test-tube studies .
  • Curcumin: Test-tube studies indicate that curcumin may kill Candida yeasts, or at least reduce their growth .
  • Xylitol: In one test-tube study, xylitol helped fight Candida, decreasing its ability to stick to a surface and cause infection .
  • Aloe vera: Aloe vera gel may inhibit the growth of Candida in the mouth and prevent infections .
  • Pomegranate: A test-tube study indicated that the plant compounds in pomegranate are beneficial against Candida yeasts .
  • Kombucha: Kombucha tea is rich in tea polyphenols and acetic acid, both of which have been shown to kill Candida in test-tube studies.
  • Probiotics: Probiotics like Lactobacillus  may reduce Candida growth and protect against infections .
Unfortunately, dietary changes may not always do the trick, in which case antifungal drugs are the most common form of treatment.
Candida is typically not life-threatening, but if left untreated, it can spread and eventually reach the bloodstream.
Once the fungus is circulating throughout the body, it can affect vital organs like the brain and heart and cause more serious complications, including death .
Summary: Limiting your intake of refined sugars and carbs may help prevent Candida overgrowth. In the case of an infection, certain foods, probiotics and antifungal drugs can help.

Candida is the most common cause of fungal infections in humans.
Several key symptoms can help you determine whether you have an overgrowth of Candida.
The most common signs of infection include oral thrush, recurring genital yeast infections, digestive issues and fungal infections of the skin and nails.
It’s important to treat candidiasis early to prevent it from spreading and causing more serious complications.

Two Instances a Rash Can Be More Serious

While we may believe that we know our body, dismissing strange bumps on our skin as a passing nuisance isn't a good idea. Rashes that seem strange and are caused by bacteria, viruses, or something you've ingested could be putting your health in jeopardy. But, when are rashes a cause for concern? Below we explain two possible causes for your rash. You may recognize some of these from personal experience, or you may recognize clues to something that has been ailing you. And be sure to scroll down and watch the video at the end to discover more information.

1. Shingles
skin rashes
Shingles are caused by the same herpes virus that causes chickenpox. If you have had chickenpox, there's a good chance you could develop shingles in your life too. It's a painful and viral condition that can appear when the chickenpox virus is no longer dormant.
In fact, more than half of the cases associated with shingles develop in adults over the age of 60. However, anyone can get this rash. A shingles outbreak requires medical intervention. In fact, complications can occur if the rash is close to the eye area. In which case, it is essential that you seek medical care to avoid any major issues.
2. Drug reaction rashes
skin rashes
There are times when a weird rash appears on your skin from a bug bite or food intolerance. But, it may also be due to something you are taking. In fact, Over the Counter (OTC) medicines and supplements can cause reactions, however, one of the most common sources of skin blunders is antibiotics. A rash of this sort typically begins after a few days of being on prescription. They are generally confined to a small area, or they may spread to cover larger portions of the body. Redness, swelling, or blistering may also be present. If this is the case, it is essential that you discontinue the medication immediately and visit your doctor.

In addition to noticing a rash, this is accompanied by difficult breathing, blisters on the skin or in the mouth, and/or swelling, seek emergency care. In addition, watch out for fever or pain. Drug-related rashes can also resemble pimples or scales and show up anywhere on the body, including the genitals. Nevertheless, if you suspect you have a drug-induced rash, it is important to keep track of what you're taking so that doctors can pinpoint the cause.

Why can skin cancers occur in parts of your body not exposed to the sun?

Between the toes, on the soles of the feet, even around the genitals ... skin cancers can appear on body parts that rarely or never see the sun. What's going on?
It's true the sun's ultraviolet light has the power to damage our genes and this is far and away the major cause of skin cancers, says Cancer Council Australia CEO Professor Ian Olver.
But if there's any downside to the success of skin cancer awareness campaigns, it's perhaps the misperception that the sun is the only cause of skin cancer. It's not.

The cancer trigger

Like all cancers, skin cancers are the result of changed or damaged genes that lead to cells being able to grow and invade other tissues, Olver says.
Left unchecked, this can be deadly as key tissues that perform vital body functions may ultimately get "taken over" by the invading cells and become unable to do their job.
But no cancer we know of is triggered by just one genetic change. There's usually a sequence of changes required and these may occur over long periods of time. So as Olver puts it, "you might need four or five 'hits' to [ultimately] cause cancer".
Sunlight on your skin could be responsible for more than one of those "hits" over time; in some people, sun might trigger most of them, he says.
"But we know it's not the sole factor at play because we do find cancers in non-sun-exposed areas [of the body]."
While such skin cancers are rare – no-one's sure exactly how rare – if you notice one, you shouldn't ignore it.
"We don't want people [who find a spot] to think, just because it's on the soles of their feet or behind their ears, 'it can't be melanoma'. It can be."
In fact a skin cancer in a hidden part of the body is actually more likely to be a melanoma, which is the most dangerous type of skin cancer. But non-melanoma skin cancers – basal cell and squamous cell cancers – can sometimes occur in non-sun-exposed areas too. Non-melanoma cancers are less deadly because they are slower to spread, but they nonetheless still require prompt treatment.

The role of genes

So if it's not sun that's triggered a skin cancer, what is it?
"The strongest 'non-sun' factor is a bad gene you've inherited," Olver says.
About 10 per cent of melanomas occur in people with a family history of melanoma. In these people, the odds a skin cancer will be in a hidden body part are higher than for others because of the "bad genes" they have inherited.
"If you've got a cancer-causing gene, you've already got some or most of the changes needed [to trigger a cancer] because you've inherited them," he says.
But melanomas can occur in hidden parts of the body even where there isn't any obvious family history.
It's possible a small proportion of skin cancers unrelated to sun might also arise because of factors like viruses, chemicals and environmental pollutants. But more research is needed to confirm this.
The bottom line is, whether it's a sun-exposed body part or not, you need to be aware of changes that might be a cancer, Olver says.
While skin checks by doctors are important, don't ignore things you notice yourself at other times.
"You need to get to know what your skin looks like and if you think anything's changing – getting darker, changing in pigmentation, size, shape, itching, or bleeding – then report it immediately."
