Home Remedies for Varicose Veins

It’s estimated that varicose veins will affect 20 percent of all adults at some point in their lives. The twisted, enlarged veins can frequently cause pain, itching, and discomfort. Medical procedures are now available to treat varicose veins, but if you want to avoid costly procedures, these home remedies might help.

Physical activity is a great first step in home treatment for varicose veins. The more you move, the better your blood circulates. The idea is to help the blood that gathers in the damaged veins move back to the heart.

Low-impact exercise that improves blood flow can help reverse the unhealthy qualities of varicose veins. Swimming, walking, cycling, yoga, and stretching are all beneficial as they circulate the blood and exercise the calf muscles without the danger of physical injury. Moderate exercise can also help with high blood pressure, one of the risk factors for varicose vein formation.

Some foods can help improve vein health. These include:

Foods with fiber

Dietary fiber helps with healthy bowel function. It’s especially important to eat fiber if you tend to have constipation. The physical effort used to pass stool can create a strong internal abdominal pressure, which can aggravate the damaged vein valves.
Foods high in dietary fiber that you can add to your diet include:
  • whole-grain foods
  • wheat
  • oats
  • nuts
  • flax seed
  • peas
  • beans
  • figs
  • plums
  • avocados
  • tomatoes
  • broccoli
  • carrots
  • artichokes
  • cauliflower
  • onions
  • sweet potatoes

Foods with potassium

Potassium deficiency can cause water retention. This increases the volume of blood in your body and creates extra pressure on the vein valves.
Foods high in potassium to add to your diet include:
  • yogurt
  • almonds
  • pistachios
  • salmon
  • tuna
  • chicken
  • white beans
  • lentils
  • dates
  • oranges
  • winter squash
  • potatoes
  • leafy vegetables
  • beet greens

Foods with flavonoids

Flavonoids may help treat cardiovascular problems. They can help improve blood circulation, reduce arterial blood pressure, and relax blood vessels.
Foods high in bioflavonoids include:
  • onions
  • garlic
  • bell peppers
  • spinach
  • broccoli
  • cocoa
  • grapes
  • citrus fruits
  • blueberries
  • strawberries
  • cherries
  • apples

Some herbal medicines can help ease the symptoms of vein conditions. These herbal remedies come as oral dietary supplements or topical phlebotonics. One study found that rutosides, Centella asiatica, and grape seed extract may have beneficial effects on chronic venous insufficiency symptoms such as swelling, cramping, or restless legs.

Rutosides

Also known as rutin, this bioflavonoid can be found in a variety of plants, such as:
  • citrus fruits
  • buckwheat
  • apples
  • St. John’s wort
  • Gingko biloba
Rutin is considered an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic supplement. It also has vascular benefits. It can strengthen weak blood vessels and capillaries that are often a precursor to varicose veins. Rutin has been used as a treatment for spider veins and varicose veins, as well as for swelling in the calves and ankles. As a dietary supplement, rutin typically comes in tablets or capsules.

Centella asiatica

Also called Gotu kola, this perennial plant is native to Asia. Pre-clinical research shows that Centella asiatica is effective at strengthening weakened veins. This helps treat venous insufficiency. The herb is usually taken in the form of tablets, capsules, and liquid extracts. It can also be applied topically as ointment or cream. This herb may interact with medications or other herbs. More studies are needed on its safety.

Grape seed extract

Grapes, grape leaves, and grape sap have been used in alternative medicine for centuries. Research suggests that grape seed extract can help treat the symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency. It can also reduce swelling. The studies are not conclusive and more research is necessary.
Grape seed contains vitamin E, flavonoids, and other compounds. As a dietary supplement, it is available in tablets, capsules, and liquid extracts. Grape seed extract can interact with blood thinners and increase the risk of bleeding. Do not take it if you are on these medications.

Home remedies and a healthy lifestyle can help relieve the symptoms of varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. However, the research on most alternative treatments and herbal remedies is still ongoing. Official sources to back the efficiency of these treatments are scarce.

If you really dislike the appearance of varicose veins, medical treatments can reduce their appearance. If your varicose veins are no longer just a cosmetic issue and have become a health concern, talk to your doctor.

Food with avocado extract could prevent bacterial illness

A recent study has found that extracts from avocado seeds can potentially be used as a natural additive incorporated into ready-to-eat foods to control microbes that cause Listeria. The study has been published in the Journal of Food Science.

Listeria is a food borne bacterial illness that can be very serious for pregnant women and people with impaired immune systems. Food products formulated without synthetic additives can be harmful for health therefore, food scientists are looking for ways to replace synthetic additives with natural ones.

Researchers from Tecnologico de Monterrey in Mexico compared enriched acetogenin extract (EAE) from avocado seeds with two name-brand synthetic anti-microbials. They found that the EAE presented similar listeria-properties and chemical profiles to the synthetic antimicrobials. The EAE was effective at 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit) and at a refrigeration temperature of 4 degrees Celsius (39.2 degrees Fahrenheit).

While humans already consume actetogenins from avocado pulp that are above antilisterial levels, bioavailability and safety of the extracts from avocado seeds need further assessment. Avocado seeds are a waste product of the food industry, and these results offer a value-added, sustainable opportunity for manufacturers.

The Oil-Removing Face Mask

This mask works double-duty— Epsom salt extracts dirt and oil from pores, while papaya and yoghurt calm cleaned skin.

In a bowl, mash papaya with a fork; blend in yoghurt and set aside.
Dissolve Epsom salts in a large pot of water, then drop in tea bag. Bring to a boil; remove from heat. Sit with face over pot for 3 minutes, head covered with a towel (like a tent) to seal in steam. Spread papaya mask over face. Leave on 10 minutes; rinse.

Peach extract could help restrict breast cancer metastasis

Researchers have shown that treatment with peach extract inhibit breast cancer metastasis.
Texas A and M AgriLife Research Research scientists say that the mixture of phenolic compounds present in the peach extract are responsible for the inhibition of metastasis.
Dr. Luis Cisneros-Zevallos, a food scientist for AgriLife Research in College Station, said that cancer cells were implanted under the skin of mice with an aggressive type of breast cancer cells, the MDA-MB-435, and what we saw was an inhibition of a marker gene in the lungs after a few weeks indicating an inhibition of metastasis when the mice were consuming the peach extract.
He said that furthermore, after determining the dose necessary to see the effects in mice, it was calculated that for humans it would be equivalent to consuming two to three peaches per day.
The study was conducted using the peach variety Rich Lady. However, according to Cisneros-Zevallos, most peach fruit share similar polyphenolic compounds but might differ in content. The study also determined that the underlying mechanism by which peach polyphenols are inhibiting metastasis would be by targeting and modulating the gene expression of metalloproteinases.

The study has been published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry.

Grape seed extract can kill cancer cells: Scientists

A component in grape seed extract has been shown to kill cancerous prostate cells, while leaving healthy cells unharmed, Indian-origin scientists have found.
The new study describes the laboratory synthesis of the most active component of grape seed extract, B2G2, and shows this synthesised compound induces the cell death known as apoptosis in prostate cancer cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed.
“We’ve shown similar anti-cancer activity in the past with grape seed extract (GSE), but now we know B2G2 is its most biologically active ingredient which can be synthesised in quantities that will allow us to study the detailed death mechanism in cancer cells,” said Alpna Tyagi, of the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
The group has spent more than a decade demonstrating the anti-cancer activity of GSE in controlled, laboratory conditions.
For example, previous studies have shown the GSE effectiveness against cancer cells and have also shown its mechanism of action.
“But until recently, we didn’t know which constituent of GSE created this effect. This naturally occurring compound, GSE, is a complex mixture of polyphenols and also so far it has been unclear about the biologically active constituents of GSE against cancer cells,” said Tyagi, who works in the lab of CU Cancer Center investigator, Chapla Agarwal.
Eventually the group pinpointed B2G2 as the most active compound, but, “it’s expensive and it takes a long time to isolate B2G2 from grape seed extract,” Tyagi said.
So instead of purifying B2G2 from GSE, the group decided to synthesise it in the lab.
The study reported the success of this effort, including the ability to synthesise gram-quantity of B2G2 reasonably quickly and inexpensively.
The group showed anti-cancer activity of synthesised B2G2 similar in mechanism and degree to overall GSE effectiveness.
“Our goal all along has been a clinical trial of the biologically active compounds from GSE against human cancer. But it’s difficult to earn FDA approval for a trial in which we don’t know the mechanisms and possible effects of all active components.”

Extract from oldest tree may cure dementia

Extract from ginkgo biloba, one of the oldest living tree species, effectively and safely treats memory loss and cognitive impairments in patients with senile dementia, a new study suggests.

The researchers observed the effects of EGb761 on proliferation of neural stem cells in the sub-ventricular zone and dentate gyrus of rats with vascular dementia.

Researchers found that the ginkgo biloba extract EGb761 promoted and prolonged the proliferation of neural stem cells in the sub-ventricular zone and dentate gyrus of rats with vascular dementia.

The cells continued to proliferate at 4 months.

EGb761 also significantly improved learning and memory in rats with vascular dementia.

The study provides a new idea and approach to further explore the induced proliferation of neural stem cells in situ in the treatment of vascular dementia.
