Probiotics and prebiotics: Nurturing a healthy gut ecosystem

Trillions of body microbes form a crucial microbiome. Imbalance from aggressors causes issues like IBS, acne, obesity, vaginosis, and yeast infections. Probiotics promote gut and vaginal health, by re-establishing the native microbiota of the body, we can remedy them. In this regard, probiotics and prebiotics can promote gut microbiota, influencing our overall health and well-being.

Our body lists trillions of microbes, which, though microscopic, play a key role in our overall health and well-being. They form a microbiome that often loses balance when overexposed to several aggressors, including antibiotics, alcohol, oily fatty food, spicy food, and even contaminated food or water.

Interestingly, even a brief change in location for a short business trip across cities can disrupt the gut microbiome’s balance.

Such imbalances is often linked to drastic changes in the composition of food, water, and spices consumed during the trip.

Microbial imbalances triggered by aggressors are not necessarily immediate, but the disturbances can become noticeable as irritable bowel syndrome, acne, gastric ulcers, obesity, vaginosis, and yeast infections. However, by re-establishing the native microbiota of the body, we can remedy them. In this regard, probiotics and prebiotics can promote gut microbiota, influencing our overall health and well-being.

Exploring the scope of probiotics and prebiotics

Probiotics are live organisms consisting of good bacteria and some yeasts that can improve our well-being. Probiotics, found in fermented food such as buttermilk, yogurt, kombucha and kimchi, plays a crucial role in digestion, facilitating nutrient absorption, alleviating symptoms like irritable bowel syndrome and diarrhea and supporting immune function. Moreover, research states that probiotics may help manage concerns like indigestion, eczema, allergies and obesity.

Another major concern that probiotics help tackle is UTIs and related symptoms that bother most women who travel frequently for work or leisure. Dirty public toilets and even seemingly clean restrooms om hotels and restaurants are often infested with bacteria and viruses, which disturb the balance of the vaginal environment, causing UTIs. Probiotics promotes vaginal healthy by helping treat infections and providing relief from their symptoms. For instance, the vaginal microbiota, which mainly comprises Lactobacillus species, are vital in preventing infections and maintaining a balanced vaginal environment. Lactobacillus species, are vital in preventing infections and maintaining a balanced vaginal environment. Typically, by introducing probiotics that belong to the favourable vaginal microbiota, Lactobacillus strains, women can retain their natural balance and reverse conditions like yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis.

Besides food, individuals can take supplements to administer probiotics into their bodies. Today, one can get probiotics capsules featuring strains such as Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG,  L.Crispatus, L.Gasseri, L. Johnsonii, L. Acidophillus,  or L. Reuteri, to promote gut and vaginal health.

Alternatively, prebiotics are non-digestable fibers found in bananas, oats, onions, legumes, and whole grains. When consumed, the prebiotics present in the food pass through the upper gastrointestinal tract and stimulate the activity of good bacteria, facilitating a balanced microbiota.

The symbiotic connection between probiotics and prebiotics and their favourable impact.

A balanced combination of probiotics and prebiotics creates a symbiotic relationship that balances the gut microbiome, which helps in these ways-

A healthy gut ecosystem effectively facilitates smooth digestion and absorption of essential nutrients from consumed food. By aiding digestion, it relieves symptoms of gastrointestinal issues, especially diarrhea.

A balanced gut microbiota can also safeguard against harmful microorganisms and prevent the onset of overactions that rigger inflammation or autoimmune illnesses. By conditioning the body’s immune response, both prebiotics and probiotics strengthen the human immune system, making one less susceptible to rampant infections.

According to ongoing research, the gut environment can also impact one’s mood, overall behaviour, and cognitive function, making them crucial for mental well-being.

In addition, it can help address concerns like UTIs and provide relief from discomfort. This way, it safeguards the wellness of urinary and gut health.

The synergy between probiotics and prebiotics is key to nurturing a healthy gut ecosystem and supporting vaginal health. One can facilitate a harmonious balance by consciously adding food and dietary supplements rich in probiotics and prebiotics into the dietary regime.

Why you shouldn't let your Vitamin D levels drop!

There are some people we aren’t allowed to forget about, who we take for granted, who are important for our existence, who we welcome with open arms and who’s periodic absence funnily enough we accept as a norm. Vitamin D is one such “people”!!

In the customary yearly medical checks Vitamin D has found a consequential place and hence the evaluation is most always done. Lower than the reference results are tolerated as if it were meant to be and the just sufficient “marks” are met with a definite measure of victory!

Supplementation is mobilized for a short period and then it is supposed that the Vitamin D that is so susceptible to drop will consent to it’s presence in adequate amounts for the rest of the year or even until the next test reveals another story.
The way Vitamin D and it’s supplementation is viewed in India needs to change. A few sachets in the year will do nothing to assist the critical role Vitamin D plays to maintain life processes and optimal health.

Let’s Start at the Start. Why is Vitamin D deficiency susceptible to drop.

Sunlight is the major source of vitamin D. As a cult, especially in urban pockets, life is more exciting indoors. In fact, life happens indoors. But lets also not fool ourselves, even if we were to spend some time as a rule in the sun daily, I suspect no marked change in the levels. The pollution and smog cover is so high, it is reported that the UV index has dropped not allowing for enough infiltration of rays for our skin to produce adequate amounts of Vitamin D.

And thus vitamin D deficiency has become a new age disease.

Why isn’t Vitamin D deficiency just a nutritional deficiency?
It isn’t. It’s a malady, a syndrome by sheer recognition of it’s importance in the prevention of a host of disease and body conditions. It is critical in more ways than we can think of

  • In the heath of bones and absorption of calcium.
  • For reduced risk of diabetes by better regulation of insulin.
  • In the health of infants, especially for the prevention of asthma & eczema.
  • For a healthy pregnancy – those with adequate amounts of Vitamin D have reduced risk to preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and bacterial vaginosis. Maintaining the right levels of vitamin D during pregnancy also has been associated with reduced the risk of food allergies in the child until age 2!!
  • Immunity – Vitamin D plays a significant role in the body’s immunity levels. In the prevention of infection and as well as in auto immune disorders.
  • Prevention of cancer – Vitamin D’s role in prevention and slowing progression of cancer is being well researched.
  • It’s role in preventing Alzheimer’s, hypertension, cardio vascular disease and autism is being fervently researched but is yet to be proven. What information we have today definitely points to the possibility of a strong association
So what’s the solution?
  • The right supplementation schedules. Sit with your medical practitioner/nutritionist and determine not just a periodic but a yearly supplementation program along with a timely method of validation.
This may involve 2-3 months of high dose supplementation and a maintenance schedule for the rest of the year. The maintenance schedule is mostly ignored but is important for us to maintain sufficient Vitamin D levels always. Like we need air always, we need Vitamin D always!
  • Sufficient levels aren’t the criteria, optimal levels are. You probably need 50-60% more than the adequate levels on the blood reference range.
  • But just supplementation through artificial methods isn’t enough. Expose yourself to the sun without a sunscreen and minimum clothing for at least 20-30minutes in the day.
  • Making sure you are taking enough magnesium rich foods like spinach, whole wheat grains, nuts, black beans, dark chocolate, yoghurt and edamame. Magnesium helps the utilization of Vitamin D in the body.
  • Stay within your BMI, obesity exposes one to consistently poor Vitamin D levels.
  • Fish, liver, beef, egg yolks, fortified cereals and cheese can also though minimally contribute towards your Vitamin D reservoir!
  • Omega 3 (cod liver oil) supplementation is another strong source of Vitamin D, 1 tbsp providing 1360 IU
There’s no problem without a solution and a problem that is everyone’s doesn’t cease to be a problem! It has to be combated. Such is the story of Vitamin D. It’s deficiency is an epidemic, and is treated almost as normal as everyone suffers from it. But that is not an excuse to not treat the condition actively. Step up to your health, step up to to Vitamin D.

Good bacteria that protects against HIV identified

Can bacteria keep the deadly Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) at bay? Experts from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston believe so. In an article written in the PLOS ONE journal, they have said that they have identified some good bacteria'' that could protect women from HIV infection and other sexually transmitted infections.
A press release put out online by the university said they had identified the good bacteria after growing vaginal skin cells outside the body and studying the way they interacted with "good and bad" bacteria.
"The health of the human vagina depends on a symbiotic/mutually beneficial relationship with "good" bacteria that live on its surface feeding on products produced by vaginal skin cells. These good bacteria, in turn, create a physical and chemical barrier to bad bacteria and viruses including HIV,'' said the release.
The research team, led by Richard Pyles, said they discovered that certain bacterial communities alter the way HIV infects and replicates. In their current studies, a bacterial community associated with a symptomatic condition called bacterial vaginosis substantially reduced the antiviral activity of one of the leading anti-HIV medicines. Conversely, vaginal surfaces occupied by healthy bacteria and treated with the antiviral produced significantly less HIV than those vaginal surfaces without bacteria treated with the same antiviral.

Condoms are actually great for the vagina

Apart from preventing unwanted pregnancies and spread of sexually transmitted diseases, condoms may help good bacteria in the vagina flourish, a new study has found.

Sexually active women in the study who used condoms had larger colonies of beneficial microbes in their vaginas compared with women who used other forms of birth control, the researchers at found.

The scientists focused on lactobacillus, a group of bacteria that dominates the natural flora of the vagina for many women.

The microbes, which produce lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide, help the vagina maintain an average pH of 4.5, comparable to the acidity of beer or tomato juice, it was reported.

This "acidic buffer system," as the researchers called it, is thought to block harmful bacteria from taking up residence and causing infections.

Though there may not be a "normal" microbiome for a healthy vagina, the presence of lactobacillus is thought to help prevent bacterial vaginosis, which is an imbalance of vaginal bacteria that causes itching, unusual discharge and unpleasant odour.

Beneficial bacteria have even been linked to a decreased risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
