ENT experts reveal why we should NEVER use earphones in the rain

A rainy afternoon feels incomplete without our favourite playlist humming in the background.  But, as soothing as this ritual feels, doctors caution that pairing rain with earphones could be a recipe for painful ear infections.

According to Dr. Meena Agarwal, ENT consultant, the risk of ear infections goes up almost 4 times during the monsoon when earphones are in regular use. The Dr. explained, “ During the monsoon, the most common ear infection of otitis externa, or otomycosis, which is a fungal infection. It usually happens when moisture gets trapped in the ear canal, allowing bacteria or fungi to grow”.

Why earphones and moisture make a risky combination

Rainy weather means more humidity in the air. The ear canal, already a delicate space, becomes more prone to dampness. No, when earphones, especially,  in-ear buds, are plugged in, the airflow is blocked. This creates the perfect warm and moist environment where germs thrive, turning a simple habit into a health hazard.

Over-the-ear headphones fare slightly better, as Dr. Agarwal notes, but they too carry risks if used for long stretches in damp conditions.

The material of earphones matters more than expected

Not all earphones are created equal. Low-quality ones, which are generally made from cheap plastics, can leach toxins into the ear canal. Tiny cracks in these earphones may also harbour germs, making matters worse. Hygiene becomes crucial here, earphones that aren’t cleaned regularly become breeding grounds for bacteria and fungi, directly putting ear health in danger.

Symptoms that shouldn’t be ignored

The tricky part about ear infections is that they don’t always shout their presence right away. It may begin with a simple itch or a feeling of fullness in the ear. Soon, this could progress to pain, discharge or even temporary hearing loss.

“These are warning signs”, Dr. Agarwal explains. If left untreated, the infection could worsen and even affect hearing in the long run. That makes early detection and timely treatment absolutely critical.

Simple signs to stay safe this monsoon

Prevention remains the easiest cure. Limiting the use of in-ear buds during the monsoon, keeping ears dry, and cleaning earphones regularly can go a long way in reducing risk. Dr. Agarwal also suggests using earbud dehydrators and avoiding the sharing of earphones altogether, as this can transfer bacteria or fungi.

If symptoms arise, timely consultation with a doctor ensures infections don’t escalate into more serious problems. The good news is that with quick treatment, including anti-fungal or antibiotic drops, recovery is usually smooth and complete.

Early Signs Of Breast Cancer That Women Should Not Ignore

A family history of breast cancer increases the risk.

The incidence of breast cancer is increasing among younger women, so women need to opt for screening and early detection of the cancer on time.

Breast cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the breast grow uncontrollably and form a tumour. While older age is a significant risk factor, breast cancer can also affect women in their 20s, 30s and 40s. Young women may find it particularly difficult to detect breast cancer early because early detection recommendations are lower and they know less about their risk factors. Watch for the following early signs of breast cancer to seek timely medical intervention.

A noticeable lump or thickened area in the breast or armpit is often the first sign of breast cancer. The lump may feel different from the surrounding tissue and may persist for a long time.

Unexplained changes in breast size, shape or symmetry should be observed. These include swelling, shrinkage or asymmetry that are not related to the menstrual cycle. While breast pain is rarely a symptom of breast cancer, any new, persistent pain or discomfort in the breast or nipple should be evaluated by a doctor.

Redness, dimpling, wrinkling or flaky skin on the breast (similar to orange peel skin) may indicate underlying problems and should be evaluated promptly.

Changes in the appearance of the nipple, such as inversion (turning inward), retraction or discharge (not breast milk), should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

A personal or family history of breast cancer, particularly with mutations in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes, increases the risk. Previous radiation treatment to the chest or breasts, for example for Hodgkin’s lymphoma, increases the chance of developing breast cancer later in life. Early menstruation (before age 12) or late menopause (after age 55), hormone replacement therapy and taking oral contraceptives can affect breast cancer risk. Obesity, excessive alcohol consumption and a sedentary lifestyle can contribute to an increased risk of breast cancer.

What puts you at higher risk of Breast cancer

When there is abnormal growth in the cells of the breast it leads to breast cancer. Early detection and treatment can help in controlling cancer. Not just women, men can also suffer frim breast cancer, but the chances are very rare. Breast cancer cases are on a rise from the past few years. A breast lump is the first noticeable symptom of breast cancer. Symptoms other than lump include- pain around the breast and the armpit, change in skin over the breast, redness around the breast, discharge from nipples which may contain blood, change in the shape of the breast or scaling of the skin around the breast. There are certain factors which can put an individual at a higher risk of breast cancer. Some of them are modifiable whereas others are non-modifiable.

Risk factors-
1) Age- Age, a non-modifiable factor which can't be changed. As you age, the risk of breast cancer increases. Most women diagnosed with breast cancer at above the age of 45. With age, women should get themselves checked for breast cancer at least once.

2) Family history- It is another non-modifiable which can increase the risk of breast cancer. If someone in your family had ahistory of breast cancer, you must get yourself checked at a young age itself. Sometimes family history may play a role whereas in some cases it won't affect.

3) Weight- You body weight can also affect your risk of developing breast cancer. Being overweight especially after menopause can increase the risk of developing breast cancer. But is a modifiable factor which can be controlled. If you're overweight, you need to lose weight to reduce your risk of cancer.

4) Early menstruation- If your first menstruation cycle comes before the age of 12, then you're a risk of breast cancer. Early drinkerrs, women who consume up to 2-5 drinks a day are at a much higher risk. This is another modifiable risk factor which can be controlled.

Breast cancer prevention steps

Being a woman itself outs you at a higher risk of developing breast cancer. You can follow some steps to prevent your risk of developing breast cancer. Some preventable steps include-
1) check your doctor for a screening of mammography at least once.
2) try self-examination and check for the presence of a lump or any change in the appearance of your breast.
3) Limit your alcohol intake.
4) Manage a healthy weight.
5) Exercise on a regular basis.

Air pollution: How to protect your eyes from smog and toxic pollutants

Air pollution can cause serious health problems, including breathing difficulties, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. It can affect your eyes, which are sensitive and prone to irritations from allergies, chemicals, and pollutants in the air. As the pollution levels increase, many people experience problems like dry eyes or allergic conjunctivitis, burning sensation, itchy and sore eyes, sensitivity to air and sun and mild blurring of vision, etc.

Air pollution and eye care

Here are a few precautions you can take to help minimise the risk of eye infections from smog and other air pollutants.
  • Avoid exposure to harmful pollutants and stay indoors, especially in the early hours of the morning when the pollution levels are at their peak - this is the golden rule.
  • If you have to step out, make sure you wear protective eyeglasses and shades which will help minimise your exposure to the pollution causing agents.
  • Wash your eyes thoroughly with clean, running water every morning, after reaching home from school/college/work and before going off to sleep.
  • Wash your hands often and avoid rubbing your eyes even if particulates enter them.
  • Use lubricating eye drops prescribed by eye specialists.
  • Do not wear contact lens and eye makeup if your eyes are itchy or feeling sore.
  • Apply a cool compress to help reduce inflammation.
  • Do not use screen devices, such as mobile phones and laptops, for long hours. Make sure that you get adequate periods of rest to avoid eye fatigue, dry eyes, and computer vision syndrome.
  • Eat a healthy diet consisting of foods rich in omega 3s and antioxidants, such as fish, green leafy vegetables, carrots, spinach, almonds, walnuts, and berries - these are extremely good for the eyes.
  • Install a high-quality air filter or air purifier system at home to help protect your eyes and overall health from pollutants.
  • Avoid using decongestant eye formulation without medical supervision.
  • See an ophthalmologist if you have red eyes, discharge, constant foreign body sensation or allergic symptoms.
Take a pledge today to contain pollution, after all, every small effort matters and everyone needs to do their own part urgently in this matter!
