How long-term earbud use damages hearing and impacts mental health; expert advises the 60/60 rule

Earbuds are now part of our daily lives. We use them for everything from work calls to gym sessions. They are convenient for all ages, but using them for too long or at too loud a volume can damage your health. Often, you won't realise there is a problem until the damage is permanent.

Dr Mayur Ingale, Head of ENT at DPU Super Speciality Hospital, warns that constant loud audio causes “wear and tear” on the inner ear. “The impact is not always immediate,” says Dr Ingale. “Small daily decisions to listen at high volume or wear earbuds for hours at a stretch and without pause can build up over months or years and result in chronic problems with the ears.”

Impact on hearing health

The biggest danger associated with earbuds is noise-induced hearing loss. The moment we reach 85 decibels, the hair cells inside the cochlea start to get damaged. Because they sit deep in the ear canal, earbuds play sound directly into your ears and at a higher volume.

The problems associated with listening to loud music or conversations for extended periods are varied.

  • Tinnitus: A constant ringing or buzzing in the ears.
  • Muffled Hearing: Difficulty following conversations in noisy rooms.
  • Permanent Loss: Partial or total hearing loss over several years.

Audiologists advise protecting against these long-term effects by keeping the volume at a moderate level and limiting the duration of listening.

Ear hygiene and infection risks

Earbuds do more than just play music; they trap heat and moisture in your ear. This creates an ideal environment for bacteria and fungi to thrive. This can lead to “swimmer’s ear” or other painful infections.

Unhygienic earbuds can also add more dirt, along with bacteria and viruses, to the ear canal. The risk is even higher when one end of the earbuds is shared, allowing bacteria to be swapped among users. Regular cleaning of earbuds and refraining from sharing them are also important factors that can protect the ear canal from infection.

Physical discomfort and irritation

If your earbuds don't fit well, they can cause physical discomfort and even damage. Hard plastic tips or "ill-fitting" buds can lead to soreness, unpleasant pressure, or even small scratches in the ear canal. If you have sensitive skin, consider switching to soft silicone tips or over-the-ear headphones.

Impact on psychological and physical welfare

The impact of earbuds goes beyond your ears. Constant sensory input can lead to overstimulation, making it harder to concentrate at work or school. Using them late at night can also cause insomnia by keeping your brain too active.

How to use earbuds safely – The 60/60 rule

  • Keep your volume below 60% and limit your listening time to 60 minutes at a time.
  • Keep your earbuds clean and don’t share them
  • Opt for earbuds that fit you well and allow air to circulate.
  • Keep an eye on your surroundings, especially in public areas or while travelling.

ENT experts reveal why we should NEVER use earphones in the rain

A rainy afternoon feels incomplete without our favourite playlist humming in the background.  But, as soothing as this ritual feels, doctors caution that pairing rain with earphones could be a recipe for painful ear infections.

According to Dr. Meena Agarwal, ENT consultant, the risk of ear infections goes up almost 4 times during the monsoon when earphones are in regular use. The Dr. explained, “ During the monsoon, the most common ear infection of otitis externa, or otomycosis, which is a fungal infection. It usually happens when moisture gets trapped in the ear canal, allowing bacteria or fungi to grow”.

Why earphones and moisture make a risky combination

Rainy weather means more humidity in the air. The ear canal, already a delicate space, becomes more prone to dampness. No, when earphones, especially,  in-ear buds, are plugged in, the airflow is blocked. This creates the perfect warm and moist environment where germs thrive, turning a simple habit into a health hazard.

Over-the-ear headphones fare slightly better, as Dr. Agarwal notes, but they too carry risks if used for long stretches in damp conditions.

The material of earphones matters more than expected

Not all earphones are created equal. Low-quality ones, which are generally made from cheap plastics, can leach toxins into the ear canal. Tiny cracks in these earphones may also harbour germs, making matters worse. Hygiene becomes crucial here, earphones that aren’t cleaned regularly become breeding grounds for bacteria and fungi, directly putting ear health in danger.

Symptoms that shouldn’t be ignored

The tricky part about ear infections is that they don’t always shout their presence right away. It may begin with a simple itch or a feeling of fullness in the ear. Soon, this could progress to pain, discharge or even temporary hearing loss.

“These are warning signs”, Dr. Agarwal explains. If left untreated, the infection could worsen and even affect hearing in the long run. That makes early detection and timely treatment absolutely critical.

Simple signs to stay safe this monsoon

Prevention remains the easiest cure. Limiting the use of in-ear buds during the monsoon, keeping ears dry, and cleaning earphones regularly can go a long way in reducing risk. Dr. Agarwal also suggests using earbud dehydrators and avoiding the sharing of earphones altogether, as this can transfer bacteria or fungi.

If symptoms arise, timely consultation with a doctor ensures infections don’t escalate into more serious problems. The good news is that with quick treatment, including anti-fungal or antibiotic drops, recovery is usually smooth and complete.
