What is the reason for wearing a facemask inside your house?

The COVID-19 situation in India continues to remain grim as the country recorded more than 3 lakh coronavirus infections for the fifth day in a row. India on Monday (April 26, 2021) recorded, yet again, the highest single-day spike with 3,52,991 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the total active cases to 28,13,658.

Following these figures and after reviewing the situation, the government on Monday said it is time for the citizens to start wearing masks inside their homes as well, and refrain from inviting guests.

While addressing a press conference in Delhi, NITI Aayog member (Health) Dr V K Paul said, “if there is a COVID-positive person inside the house, he or she must wear the mask so as to prevent other family members from getting infected.”

“Rather, I’ll say that the time has come that we start wearing masks even otherwise inside our homes. We used to talk about wearing it outside homes, but the way the infection has spread, it will be better if we wear facemask inside our homes if we are sitting with someone,” he said.

Why did Dr V K Paul make this recommendation?

This statement by NITI Aayog member (Health) Dr V K Paul comes days after a study published in ‘The Lancet journal’ which said there is consistent, strong evidence to prove that the SARS-CoV-2 virus, behind the COVID-19 pandemic, is predominantly transmitted through the air. Paul added that people should also avoid stepping out of their houses unnecessarily and not invite guests at home.

Additionally, it is a known fact that COVID-19 spreads majorly from person to person through respiratory droplets. Many people, who are COVID-19 positive, are asymptomatic and they can continue to spread infection unknowingly, which is one of the reasons why it is observed that, in the second wave, the entire family tested positive even when the majority of them stayed inside.

Why did the Centre make this recommendation in the second wave of COVID-19?

It has been observed that in the second wave of the coronavirus, India’s vulnerable population are exhibiting severe symptoms. The hospitalisation and death toll in the current wave is overwhelming for the country’s healthcare facilities.

The usage of face mask will not only protect the person who is wearing it but also the ones around him/her. Hence, many can say that the recommendation is aimed at not only breaking the COVID-19 transmission chain, but also protecting the individuals who are at higher risk.

What studies did the Centre cite while making this recommendation?

The government, while addressing the press, cited data collected by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Service. The data suggested that there is negligible risk of transmission between two individuals if both are wearing masks and are keeping 6 feet distance between them.

As per the data, the risk is low (1.5%) when both individuals are wearing face mask, medium (5%) when only the infected individual is wearing a face mask, high (30%) if only the uninfected individual is wearing a face mask, and highest (90%) when both the individuals are not wearing a face mask.

Air pollution: How to protect your eyes from smog and toxic pollutants

Air pollution can cause serious health problems, including breathing difficulties, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. It can affect your eyes, which are sensitive and prone to irritations from allergies, chemicals, and pollutants in the air. As the pollution levels increase, many people experience problems like dry eyes or allergic conjunctivitis, burning sensation, itchy and sore eyes, sensitivity to air and sun and mild blurring of vision, etc.

Air pollution and eye care

Here are a few precautions you can take to help minimise the risk of eye infections from smog and other air pollutants.
  • Avoid exposure to harmful pollutants and stay indoors, especially in the early hours of the morning when the pollution levels are at their peak - this is the golden rule.
  • If you have to step out, make sure you wear protective eyeglasses and shades which will help minimise your exposure to the pollution causing agents.
  • Wash your eyes thoroughly with clean, running water every morning, after reaching home from school/college/work and before going off to sleep.
  • Wash your hands often and avoid rubbing your eyes even if particulates enter them.
  • Use lubricating eye drops prescribed by eye specialists.
  • Do not wear contact lens and eye makeup if your eyes are itchy or feeling sore.
  • Apply a cool compress to help reduce inflammation.
  • Do not use screen devices, such as mobile phones and laptops, for long hours. Make sure that you get adequate periods of rest to avoid eye fatigue, dry eyes, and computer vision syndrome.
  • Eat a healthy diet consisting of foods rich in omega 3s and antioxidants, such as fish, green leafy vegetables, carrots, spinach, almonds, walnuts, and berries - these are extremely good for the eyes.
  • Install a high-quality air filter or air purifier system at home to help protect your eyes and overall health from pollutants.
  • Avoid using decongestant eye formulation without medical supervision.
  • See an ophthalmologist if you have red eyes, discharge, constant foreign body sensation or allergic symptoms.
Take a pledge today to contain pollution, after all, every small effort matters and everyone needs to do their own part urgently in this matter!

New Study Shows Why You Shouldn't Wear a Tie

Ties serve little functional purpose, in fact, many, including many actors, have described the suit and tie as an 'anachronism'. But few would think that such an item of clothing could actually damage your health. Scientists have recently described the act of wearing a tie as 'socially desirable strangulation' - as a study investigated how ties affect blood flow to the brain, and the results weren't good.

In fact, results showed that wearing a tie results in a significant dip in blood flow to the brain. In the study, 15 men wearing ties and 15 men without were scanned using MRI to measure the blood flow to the head. Researchers found that the brains of people who wore ties were, on average, receiving 7.5% less 'cerebral blood flow' than the brains of those subjects within the control group. The scientists attributed the lower blood flow to the narrowing of the carotid arteries, which carry blood away from the heart due to the pressure of the tie.

While a 7.5% reduction in blood flow may not seem substantial enough to cause noticeable health problems, people who suffer from other health issues do need to be cautious. This includes people who have high blood pressure, or if you are a pensioner or a smoker, as you could end up suffering from headaches, dizziness, and nausea if you wear a tie for too long.

Studies have also shown that ties may raise the risk of glaucoma, cataracts and other injuries. In fact, they investigated the effects of ties on the head. According to research, wearing a tie can restrict the blood flow through the jugular vein as well as through the carotid arteries.

Consequently, the restriction can end up causing a backup of blood along the system to the eye, raising eye pressure. This means that a raised intraocular eye pressure is considered a risk factor for glaucoma and cataracts. Thus, according to the study, it could possibly increase the risk of worsening existing glaucoma.

Furthermore, you can even increase your risk of Musculoskeletal trauma just by wearing a tie. According to research, those who wear ties often find their range of motion 'significantly decreased' when wearing a tight necktie, compared to without it. This may lead to certain muscles causing tension to accumulate in the upper trapezius and raising the risk of injuries.

But, what may be more worrying than spraining a muscle in the office is the fact that wearing a tie in a health-focused workplace could be putting others at potentially severe risk. In fact, a study showed that among 42 male surgical clinicians at the New York Hospital, nearly half had managed to accrue infection-causing pathogens on their ties.

According to researchers, who carried out the study, they said that "Hospital-acquired infections account for a large proportion of high rates of morbidity, mortality, and costs. We estimated there are approximately 440,000 of these infections annually among US adult inpatients and that their annual costs are $9.8 billion." Therefore ties harboring pathogens could be making a serious contribution to an increasingly concerning healthcare issue. Perhaps it's high time we do away with ties altogether.

Diabetes Symptoms to Never Ignore

One of the keys to leading a healthy life with diabetes is to keep your glucose levels, or blood sugar, in check. As your main source of energy, glucose plays a big role in keeping your body working like it should. If you have either type of diabetes, you need to be aware of symptoms that may mean your glucose is out of balance.
If your blood sugar is too low:

Symptom: Acting Drunk or Losing Consciousness

Your brain can be affected if your sugar level drops too low.
Low glucose can cause you to stagger, slur words, or even pass out.
What to do: It's smart to wear a medical bracelet or necklace that lets people know you have diabetes.
If your blood sugar gets too low, taking in about 15 to 20 grams of a simple carb may help. Some examples are a half a cup of orange juice, 2 tablespoons of raisins, or a tablespoon of sugar.  Glucose tablets and gel tubes are also available. Some people keep an injectable hormone called glucagon on hand and tell their friends how to give them the shot in case they faint or can’t swallow. Ask your doctor if keeping glucagon on hand is right for you.
If you still don't feel like yourself after drinking juice or getting a glucagon shot, call 911. If your blood sugar returns to your target range, eat a meal or snack to prevent it from dropping again.
Always let your doctor know if you had an episode of low blood sugar. Your treatment plan may have to be adjusted.
If your blood sugar is too high:

Symptom: Excessive Urination

It's normal to release as much as 84 ounces of urine a day -- that's about 2 liters. Since you probably don’t measure your urine output at home, you may have to figure out whether you're making too much of it.

What to do: “Waking at night to urinate and urinating larger amounts than usual can mean something is wrong,” says David Michael Erani, MD. He is an endocrinologist at Joslin Diabetes Centre in Boston and an instructor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. People with an over-active bladder or men with an enlarged prostate may urinate frequently as well. But as long as the actual amount has not increased, it doesn't necessarily mean you have uncontrolled glucose.

Symptom: Excessive thirst

Being thirstier than usual can be brought on by warm weather, salty foods, or an increase in your workout routine. But your thirst can also be brought on by too much urination.
What to do: Continue to drink when you're thirsty. If you're dehydrated, though, you may need medical care.
Thirst may mean “your body is signalling you to drink more,” says Fernando Ovalle, MD. He is director of the Diabetes & Endocrine Clinical Research Unit at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. Urinating and drinking more than a gallon a day is a signal that something is wrong.
