Water dethroned: these 5 drinks hydrate even better, according to science

Water: vital, yes — but not unbeatable

Let’s get one thing straight: no one is denying how essential water is. Nearly all living things depend on it to function and survive — it’s the foundation of life itself. Still, when we look at the facts, is it really the drink that hydrates us best?

It seems obvious that the answer would be yes. If you’re thirsty, drink water — problem solved, right? Not so fast. Chemically speaking, the story is a little more complex. The formula H₂O refers to distilled water, not the kind we actually drink. Tap and bottled waters contain trace minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium — which, as it turns out, make a big difference.

Our bodies are accustomed to mineral water, but drinking distilled water over time can upset our balance of electrolytes — the charged minerals that regulate chemical reactions, nerve function, and fluid balance. That’s why the drinks that hydrate best are those rich in electrolytes.

You might think first of an oral rehydration solution — those powdered mixes often given to babies after a bout of gastroenteritis. They’re designed to replace lost water, salts, and nutrients, helping the body recover its balance quickly.

The top five most hydrating drinks

With an endless array of beverages — from fruit juices to sports drinks to sodas — it’s hard to tell which ones actually hydrate best. Since hydration power isn’t listed on labels, researchers at the University of St. Andrews decided to test it scientifically.

They evaluated how quickly different drinks hydrate the body and how long the effect lasts. The key discovery? Drinks that contain small amounts of lactose, protein, or fat help the body retain fluids longer — because these components slow down how fast water exits the system.

The results were surprising. Skim milk ranked first, with a Beverage Hydration Index (BHI) of 99%, tying with oral rehydration solutions and whole milk. Orange juice came next, with a BHI of 95%, just edging out water itself.

Here’s the ranking:

  1. Skimmed milk
  2. Oral rehydration solution (for children, athletes, or seniors)
  3. Whole milk
  4. Orange juice
  5. Water

Yes, plain water only comes fifth — though researchers caution that the hydration differences are minor. This doesn’t mean you should start swapping water for milk every day. But for groups like older adults, infants, or people who struggle to drink large amounts of liquid, these alternatives might provide better hydration support.

In short: water is still life’s essential liquid — but when it comes to sheer hydration, science says it might not always be number one.

6 Rehydrating Drinks to Help You Recover After Exercising

The way you fuel and replenish your body after exercising really matters. This way, you will reap the maximum benefit of your workout. According to nutrition experts, the two nutrients the body needs the most after physical exertion are protein and carbohydrates. Post-workout drinks are the easiest and quickest way to attain them.

The good news is that you really don’t have to stick to plain water. For optimal hydration and recovery after a workout, here are six recommended drinks that work just as well as water. Some of the options may even surprise you.

1. Chocolate Milk

Best Drinks To Help You Recover After Exercise chocolate milk
Good news to all the chocolate lovers out there. Not only is chocolate milk delicious, but it also ranks as the best post-workout beverage, according to nutritionists. Just one glass of low-fat chocolate milk provides about 8 grams of protein. It’s also packed with carbohydrates and many other important nutrients and electrolytes that are commonly lost through sweating, such as calcium, potassium, sodium, and magnesium.

Electrolytes are chemicals that conduct electricity when mixed with water. They regulate nerve and muscle function, hydrate the body, balance blood acidity and blood pressure, and help rebuild damaged tissues. Losing too many electrolytes through sweating can cause fatigue and muscle cramps. Chocolate milk can help with that. One study from 2011 found it to be more effective than water at combating exercise-induced dehydration in children.

2. Coconut Water
Coconut water is known for its many health benefits, all thanks to its high levels of antioxidants and other beneficial nutrients. So it comes as no surprise that coconut water is a great post-workout drink. Besides being refreshing, coconut water also contains electrolytes like magnesium and potassium. One study found it as beneficial as sports drinks and water for post-workout recovery.

The drawback of coconut water is that it’s low in carbs, proteins, and sodium. The study also noted that drinking high amounts of coconut water or coconut water concentrate could cause bloating and an upset stomach. The best way to incorporate coconut in your post-workout routine is to add it into a smoothie or shake instead of drinking it by itself.

3. Orange Juice

Orange juice is usually associated with breakfast, but it can be a great post-workout drink, no matter what time of the day you decide to break a sweat. While some people may avoid orange juice due to its acidity, a study published in the Journal of Nutrition and Health Sciences concluded that orange juice satisfies thirst without causing stomach distress after a workout.

In addition to immunity-boosting vitamin C, 100 percent orange juice also provides you with potassium and other electrolytes. The natural sugars found in orange juice help replenish energy and minerals, leading to faster recovery.

4. Beetroot Juice

Beetroot juice is rich in potassium, vitamin C, magnesium, iron, and sodium. A small study also showed that drinking beetroot juice boosts physical performance. It does so by increasing the levels of nitric oxide (NO), which serves multiple functions related to increased blood flow and improved muscle contraction.

It is generally recommended to drink 7 to 10 ounces of beetroot juice immediately after a taxing activity. Since beetroot juice doesn’t contain the sufficient amount of protein you need after a workout, it would be wise to add it into a shake rather than drink it plain.

5. Cherry juice
Best Drinks To Help You Recover After Exercise cherry juice
Antioxidant-rich cherry juice is an excellent choice for a post-workout drink. It is known to reduce inflammation and benefits muscle functioning. This claim is backed by a study, which found cherry juice to decrease muscle damage. Cherry juice was also found to significantly prevent strength loss compared to a placebo.

However, registered dietitian Amy Gorin notes that cherry juice lacks the proper amount of carbs you need after a workout. And while it can be beneficial for both endurance athletes and everyday workouts, it’s important to find an unsweetened version of the drink.

6. Tea
You probably already know that a relaxing cup of tea goes a long way. Research shows that both green and black tea help in fat oxidation during aerobic exercise and post-workout recovery. Fat oxidation is the process where fats are broken into smaller molecules that get stored and used for energy. Much like cherry juice, the high levels of antioxidants found in tea have been shown to reduce muscle soreness and speed up muscle recovery.

What about coffee?
It may sound surprising, but drinking coffee after a workout has some benefits. For example, coffee has been found to decrease muscle pain by blocking the activity of a chemical called adenosine, which is released as part of the inflammatory response to injury or exertion.

That being said, it’s the least helpful option on this list. That’s because coffee tends to be a bit dehydrating, which is the opposite of what you need for a post-workout beverage. However, consuming caffeine as a pre-workout drink may improve your performance.

And what about post-workout happy hour?

Happy hour after a workout session may not be such a bad idea! Like sports drinks, beer contains carbs and electrolytes. According to several studies, it also doesn't have negative effects on hydration. Light beer with added sodium, in particular, has been shown to replace fluid loss after high-intensity cycling.

Home Remedies For Mouth Ulcers

There are several drugs and medications available in the market that can provide temporary relief from the condition. It is important to consult a doctor for the correct diagnosis and treatment of oral ulcers. Simple home remedies may help in addition to the prescribed treatment. Here is a list of home remedies which are popular for mouth ulcers.

1. Honey

Honey has many beneficial properties. However, you may be unaware of the fact that it can also be effective for mouth ulcers. Apply honey on the ulcers and let it remain. Since the ulcers are inside the mouth, you can accidentally ingest the applied honey along with your saliva. However, it is essential that you keep applying honey to the ulcer spots after every few hours.

Honey has antimicrobial properties and can aid in repairing any open wound quickly. Aside from reducing the ulcer, the honey also protects the area from infections.

2. Baking Soda Paste

Take equal amounts of baking soda and water. Mix them to create a thick paste. Apply this paste to the mouth ulcer and let it dry out. Once the mixture has dried, rinse your mouth with water and gargle as well. This should be done three times a day.

Baking soda is actually a chemical compound named sodium bicarbonate. This compound is used in many home-cleaning solutions. It also acts as one of the best mouth ulcer cures, as it can reduce the pain significantly. The baking soda neutralizes the acid formed by the ulcer, which eventually treats the condition.

3. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is used in a wide variety of activities across most of India. However, very few people are aware of its healing properties when it comes to mouth ulcers. Simply apply a bit of coconut oil to the surface of the ulcer and let it stay on. You can also apply it while going to sleep at night. Similar to honey, coconut oil includes antimicrobial properties that help to reduce ulcers naturally. The same compound also acts as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic treatment for your mouth ulcers. Applying the oil can reduce the pain caused due to mouth ulcers.

4. Saltwater

Mix a tablespoon of salt in a glass of lukewarm water. Now gargle thoroughly using this liquid. Once you are done, you can gargle with plain water to remove the salty taste from your mouth. Using this procedure, you can soothe some of the pain and discomfort that you experience during the mouth ulcer. The antiseptic properties of salt are well known.

5. Toothpaste

Who knew that simple toothpaste can help against mouth ulcers as well? However, any good toothpaste contains antimicrobial properties that can reduce the swelling and pain of mouth ulcers.

Apply the toothpaste using a Q-tip. Ensure that you cover the entire ulcer region with toothpaste. Leave the paste on for a few minutes before rinsing it off. You can keep applying the toothpaste each day until you see the whiteness disappear from the ulcer. However, applying toothpaste to the ulcer can be quite painful. This pain can be offset by applying aloe vera gel on the spot.

6. Orange Juice

Orange is a great source of Vitamin C, which can prevent and aid mouth ulcers. However, consuming a whole orange may be difficult when you are suffering from these ulcers. A great remedy for mouth ulcers is to drink two glasses of freshly squeezed orange juice every day.

Research has shown that Vitamin C deficiency can lead to mouth ulcers. Apart from this, Vitamin C is known to boost the immunity of a person, allowing their body to fight against all kinds of infections and diseases.

7. Clove Oil

Clove is an essential part of one of the most used spice mixes in India, Garam Masala. Clove oil is extracted from the flower bud. This extract is used in a wide range of natural remedies, including toothache and mouth ulcers. In case of mouth ulcers, take a small piece of cotton and apply the oil directly to the ulcer. Wait till the ulcer tissue absorbs the oil.

Remember to rinse your mouth with warm water prior to the application of the clove oil. This will clean up the surface of the ulcer region. Clove contains eugenol and antimicrobial properties that help deal with all oral issues. The pain and inflammation are also treated by the application of this oil.

8. Coconut Milk

Use coconut milk to gargle when you are suffering from mouth ulcers. This is one of the best remedies for mouth ulcer. When repeated three to four times each day, you are likely to feel a soothing effect and also reduced pain emanating from your ulcers.

9.Turmeric Powder

Turmeric is an antiseptic, which is used in almost all Indian dishes. Along with fighting infections, turmeric is also effective in battling against the inflammation and pain from mouth ulcers. The product has antimicrobial properties as well.

Take a bit of turmeric powder and some water. Mix to form a thick paste. Apply this paste on the ulcers every morning and evening. Leave it on for a few minutes and then rinse it off properly. You should start noticing the difference immediately.

10. Garlic

Garlic is another common item in every Indian kitchen. While it is commonly used to flavour curries and dals, garlic can also act as a great remedy for mouth ulcers. The Allisin compound present in garlic makes it antimicrobial, which helps against a range of infections.

To use garlic, cut a clove in half and dab it on the ulcer spot for a minute or two. After this is done, rinse your mouth properly to remove the raw garlic odour from your breath. You can repeat this twice or even thrice each day.

11. Cabbage Juice:

Boil a raw cabbage and puree it once after it is sufficiently boiled. Drink this juice three to four times each day to receive the needed benefits. Cabbage possesses anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce the pain in your mouth, allowing you to consume solid foods easily, even though you may be suffering from severe mouth ulcers.

12. Apple Cider Vinegar

Next time you are at the grocer’s, pick up a bottle of apple cider vinegar. Take a tablespoon of this and mix it with half a cup of warm water. Take this solution inside your mouth and rinse with it. Keep repeating for a minute or two. Once this is done, rinse your mouth thoroughly with plain water. You can keep repeating this every morning and evening, till the time that the ulcer heals.

Apple cider vinegar has anti-bacterial properties that will kill the germs which caused the ulcer in the first place. It will also speed up your recovery.

These are some of the home remedies that will likely improve mouth ulcers. However, there are several kinds of mouth ulcers, each with a different cause and treatment. Some mouth ulcers where bleeding occurs may be more severe than normal ulcers. Try out these hacks and see whether you receive any benefits from them. If you do not notice any improvement, you should visit the doctor immediately.

It is important to understand that oral ulcer cure depends on the type and cause of the ulcer. A doctor can best advise you on this. Above mentioned remedies are popular but lack scientific evidence and may not be effective for everyone.
