10 Alternative Uses for Yogurt

A cup of yogurt each morning is a great way to start the day and reap its health benefits. But this versatile dairy product has a number of other uses too, some of which extend beyond eating and drinking it. In fact, yogurt can be used as an excellent skin and hair care product, primarily due to its mild astringent qualities and its high quantities of zinc and lactic acid - making it a great, natural, hydration treatment. Best of all, it's cheap!
Let's take a look at 10 surprising uses for yogurt, you most likely never considered:

1. Use yogurt to lower your cholesterol

People with borderline to moderate-high cholesterol levels, may benefit from eating yogurt with probiotic Lactobacillus Acidophilus, alongside a combination of the bacterium Enterococcus Faecium and Streptococcus Thermophilus. This type of yogurt is thought to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol. However, it does not raise HDL (good) cholesterol.
2. Use yogurt to enhance your immune system
Yogurt contains active cultures that enhance the body's immune system. It increases the production of gamma interferons, which play a key role in fighting allergies and viral infections. Studies conducted on yogurt also found that it can help prevent gastrointestinal infections.
3. Use yogurt to naturally whiten your teeth

Teeth whitening treatments are rather expensive, but why spend money when you can prepare a natural remedy with yogurt at home? Just rub some yogurt onto your teeth daily for a couple of weeks for sparkly white teeth. Yogurt is believed to work because of the phosphorus and calcium it contains.
4. Use yogurt to relieve sunburn
Yogurt is a fantastic source of zinc, which helps sooth the burning and itchiness of sunburn. To relieve the symptoms, apply a thick layer of plain, cool yogurt directly to your burn and rinse off with cold water after 20 minutes.
5. Use yogurt to relieve symptoms associated with diarrhea

Yogurt helps restore bacteria in the intestine, and can be used after taking antibiotics or to treat antibiotic-related diarrhea and acute diarrhea in children. In fact, a yogurt formula may be given as a replacement for milk formula in infants and young children to relieve persistent diarrhea.

6. Use yogurt as a replacement for cheese
The consistency of yogurt cheese is similar to cream cheese, but is lower in fat and contains healthy bacteria. Yogurt cheese can be used as a spread on bagels, toast and crackers and may be used as an alternative to cream cheese in cheesecake recipes.

Preparing yogurt cheese is pretty simple. Empty a pint of yogurt into a large, fine-meshed strainer to catch the liquid that drains from the yogurt. The texture will vary depending on how long it drains. Then cover and refrigerate for eight to 24 hours. This will make about one cup of yogurt cheese.
7. Use yogurt as a natural body scrub

Yogurt can be used as a scrub for your hands, feet or the whole body. Simply mix with oats or dried citrus peel. Massage the blend into your skin gently in a circular motion and rinse off with lukewarm water. Your skin should feel smooth and hydrated.
8. Use yogurt as a hair conditioner The properties found in yogurt make it an ideal remedy for smoothing the skin, but it's also great for your scalp and hair. Yogurt helps bring out your hair's natural shine making it soft and silky. It can be used as a hair mask instead of your conditioner. Just take some plain yogurt and rub it all over your hair, then rinse with lukewarm water. Yogurt will also help soothe an inflamed scalp, reduce hair loss and will help banish split ends.

9. Use yogurt to relieve canker sores
Canker sores, white and yellow sores which usually form on your gums, inside your mouth and on your lips can be very painful to bear. Using yogurt will help reduce the pain and heal the sores. You may choose to include it in your diet or apply it directly to the affected area.
10. Use yogurt to fight acne and prevent premature aging The natural antibacterial and anti-fungal properties found in yogurt can be used to get rid of pimples. Apply the yogurt to acne prone areas and let it sit for 30 minutes, then wash off with lukewarm water. The lactic acid found in yogurt helps dissolve dead skin and can be used to prevent wrinkles and fine lines as we age.

Sunscreen promote vasodilation of blood vessels

Sunscreen protects the skin's blood vessel function from harmful ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure by protecting dilation of the blood vessels. Perspiration on the skin may also provide protection to the skin's blood vessels from sun damage, a recent study has suggested.

UVR from the sun has been well documented as a contributing factors to skin cancer and premature skin ageing. UVR has also been found to reduce nitric oxide-associated dilation of skin blood vessels ( vasodilation) by reducing the amount of nitric oxide available in the skin. Nitric oxide is a compound essential for blood vessel health.

Vasodilation of the skin's blood vessels plays an important role in regulating body temperature and responding to heat stress, both locally in the skin and throughout the body.

Researchers studied the effect of UVR exposure with sunscreen or sweat on nitric oxide's ability to promote vasodilation of skin blood vessels. Healthy young adults with light-to-medium skin tone were exposed to UVR on one arm while the other arm served as a control and did not receive UVR treatment.

The dosage of UVR was roughly equivalent of spending an hour outside on a sunny day, but without the reddening of sunburn. Three sites on the UVR exposed arm of each participant were randomly assigned one of three treatments:
· One site received UVR only,
· A second site received UVR with a chemical sunscreen on the skin, and
A third site received UVR with simulated sweat on the skin.

The UVR-only site was found to have less nitric oxide-associated vasodilation than in the control arm. However, the sunscreen- and sweat-treated sites did not show these reductions in nitric oxide-associated vasodilation.

"Further, when sunscreen was applied prior to UVR, UVR exposure actually augmented [nitric oxide-associated vasodilation compared to [the control arm], or when sweat was on the skin. The presence of sunscreen or sweat on the skin may play a protective role against this effect [of UVR]," the research team wrote.

"For those who spend a lot of time working, exercising or participating in other various activities outdoors, using sunscreen may protect not only against skin cancer but also against reductions in skin vascular function," wrote the first author of the study.

Garlic Not Just Good For Heart, Also For Insomnia !

Some love garlic, many just hate it. Sad that those who are averse to it, don't know its real worth ! Yes, not only does it taste good with food, it helps to relieve gas, lowers cholesterol. Thus, it is good for heart, some say it also keeps your blood sugar levels low. So, try consuming little daily.

Let’s look at the overall health benefits of garlic. It is actually relatively high in calories, with 100 per 100 grams. Garlic features complex carbohydrates and proteins, plus vital minerals and vitamins like vitamin B, sodium, potassium, and magnesium.

It also contains quite a bit of allicin, a sulfur compound that gives garlic its notable smell. This is why garlic is so good for treating infections and can kill certain viruses better than antibiotics.

Furthermore, garlic contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that improve the function of pretty much all of the body’s systems.

Eating garlic on a regular basis supports cardiovascular health by improving blood flow. It can reduce bad cholesterol levels and regulate blood pressure. It has been recommended for metabolic disorders and respiratory problems. Garlic is even thought to prevent premature aging by inhibiting free radical activity, and thereby holding off the development of wrinkles and fine lines.

Now, for all those who are suffering from insomnia, this is going to come as a surprise, instead of swallowing pills to sleep, keep some garlic pearls under your pillow. Allicin, the sulphur compound in garlic has calming effect that helps you to have a sound sleep. Those who have a heavy head due to cold, also find relief from garlic placed under the pillow ! By keeping garlic under the pillow one gets less sick, as allicin is thought to block two groups of enzymes responsible for the ability of infectious microbes to invade and survive in your body.

Garlic is rich in potassium and magnesium- two minerals which play a vital role in your quality of sleep. Magnesium supports deep, restorative sleep by helping to maintain healthy levels of GABA, which is a neurotransmitter that reduces the activity of neurons in the brain and central nervous system, which in turn increases relaxation and reduces stress. Potassium is thought to increase your sleep efficiency and reduce episodes of waking after you drift off. If you get enough of these nutrients in your daily diet, you might not need to take garlic before bed.

For those who are COPD or suffering from bad bouts of cough, I'll strongly recommend that you finely chop or crush 2 -3 pearls of garlic, in 200 ml of milk with 1/2 tsp of turmeric pdr, let it simmer for 20 minutes on low flame, stir from time to time. Then add a tsp of sugar, drink as hot as possible before going to bed. Within 2 days, you'll find a lot of relief in your cough, also the phlegm reduces. I drink this on most nights, recently I recommended this to my friend who even after taking the doctor's meds for more than a week, was still suffering from bad bouts of cough. Within 2 days, her cough is better, now after 4 days, she is a lot better.

Caution for those who have pets, kindly note that garlic is harmful to your pets, so don;t leave it under the bed in your absence,
