There is a great Russian folk medicine: In case of food poisoning, drink vodka with salt. If you don't drink alcohol, drink a few glasses of well-salted water, and then try to vomit it out. (This is NOT an alternative to medical treatment!)

* In case of a cold, drink a bit of vodka with salt.

* If your blood pressure is down, quickly drink a very salty glass of lime water.

* A good way to increase the amount of stomach acids for digestion: 5-30 minutes after eating, put 1-2 grams of sea- or cooking-salt at the edge of your tongue. After the salt melts, swallow the salty saliva in your mouth. Such a small amount of salt won't harm you but will cause an extra release of stomach acids.

* Salt is a great disinfectant - If you clean wounds with salt water soaked materials, they won't become inflamed.

* Granulomas of the tooth will be gone after 2 weeks of being cleaned with salt water.
For a tooth ache - Wash your mouth with salt water after every meal and before going to sleep.

* For pneumonia and strong coughing, place a wash cloth soaked in salt water on the back of the person, on the area of the infection.

* Adenomas can be treated by holding down a cotton wash cloth folded to four layers and soaked in salt water for 2 weeks.

* Salt helps in treating acne and boils. Place a little salt on a bandage and put it on the infected area for an hour. You can repeat the process a few times a day.

* When you have bruises, put a compress of salt and vinegar on it . It is also a useful way to treat headaches.

* To treat varicose veins, use a compress of salt water on the problematic vein, and on that, an elastic bandage. If you do this regularly, morning and evening, the veins will slowly return to normal.

* To treat foot fungus, soak your feet for 5-10 minutes in a mixture of 2 tablespoons of salt for every 0.5 liters of hot water. You can add some ground garlic to the mix. Repeat until fully healed.

* After getting stung by a bee, smear a bit of wet salt on the stung area, it will calm down the pain and the swelling.

* If you want smooth, healthy skin, rub your body with a salt stone before showering. In addition to a cosmetic treatment, you will also gain a medical benefit while ions of salt penetrate the skin and energize the body.

* A salt massage also helps to treat low blood pressure, chronic digestive problems, diabetes, and regular colds. That said there are also NEGATIVE side effects: Open wounds on the skin, rash or Eczema are possible.

Not just a loose throw rug or poor eyesight, even bloodstream, respiratory and urinary infections can cause falls, especially in older people, says a study.

The findings also suggest that while these falls may be more common in the elderly, they shouldn't be overlooked in younger people - 20 percent of patients in the study were younger than 65.

"Over the years I have been struck by the fact that some of the more serious infections I treated were in people who came to the hospital because they fell," said principle investigator of the study Farrin Manian from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, US.

"Even though many of the patients had vague early signs of an infection, such as weakness, or lethargy, it was the fall that brought them in," Manian noted.

People can fall down because the infection may cause low blood pressure - and therefore lightheadedness and dizziness - or because it adds to confusion in older patients with dementia, according to the researchers.

They analysed 161 patients who went to the emergency room because they fell and were subsequently diagnosed with a coexisting infection.

Of those, 71 (44.1 percent) had a urinary tract infection, 64 (39.8 percent) had a bloodstream infection, 37 (23.0 percent) had a respiratory infection and nine (5.6 percent) had an infection of the heart valve.

The findings suggest that family members, care givers and healthcare providers shouldn't rush to judgement about the cause of a fall, particularly in an older person, and should consider whether the person was ill or not feeling well before the incident happened to ensure the patient is diagnosed appropriately and can receive timely treatment.

The study was presented at IDWeek 2015 conference in San Diego, California in the US.

Low blood pressure before surgery could be deadly

Patients with low blood pressure before an operation are at an increased risk of death during or after the surgery than those with preoperative high blood pressure, say researchers, including Indian-origin scientists.

"While high blood pressure control is important for long-term health, high blood pressure itself does not impose a significant risk of postoperative death," said the study by Puja Myles and Sudhir Venkatesan from the University of Nottingham in Britain and colleagues.

They used data from 252,278 patients from the United Kingdom Clinical Practice Research Datalink to perform their analysis.
A number of models of varying complexities were used to account for 29 perioperative risk factors including age, gender, race, comorbidities, medications, and surgical risk score.

Peri-operative generally refers to the three phases of surgery: preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative.

After risk factor adjustment, the effect of high blood pressure was not found to be associated with increased odds of post-surgery mortality.

However, preoperative low blood pressure was associated with statistically significant increases in the odds of perioperative mortality.

For patients with a systolic (the top number) blood pressure of below 100 mmHg, the likelihood of death increased by 40 percent.
For those with a diastolic (the bottom number) BP of under 40 mmHg, the likelihood of death increased by 2.5 times.

While the risk from low blood pressure was present in patients with low systolic or low diastolic pressure, values below 100/40 were of greatest risk.

Hence the likelihood of death further increased as either or both systolic or diastolic blood pressure decreased further.

"Preoperative low blood pressure is under-recognised as a risk factor for perioperative mortality. Future studies will need to identify how this risk can be modified to improve patient outcomes," the researchers noted.

The study was presented at Euroanaesthesia 2015, the European Anaesthesiology Congress, in Berlin, Germany.
