Salty Medicine

According to Russian folklore, drinking vodka mixed with salt is great for curing a nasty bout of food poisoning. 

If you don't drink alcohol, drink a few glasses of well-salted water, and then try to regurgitate it (This is NOT an alternative to medical treatment!). 

 In case of a cold, drink a bit of vodka with salt. 

If your blood pressure is down, quickly drink a very salty glass of water.

A good way to increase the amount of stomach acids for digestion: 5-30 minutes after eating, put 1-2 grams of sea or cooking salt on the tip of your tongue. After the salt melts, swallow the salty saliva in your mouth. Such a small amount of salt won't harm you, but will cause an extra release of stomach acids. 

Salt is a great disinfectant - If you clean wounds with salt water soaked materials, they won't become inflamed. 

Granulomas of the tooth will be gone after two weeks of being cleaned with salt water. 

For a tooth ache - rinse your mouth with salt water after every meal and before going to sleep. 

For pneumonia and strong coughing, place a wash cloth soaked in salt water on the back of the person, on the area of the infection.

Adenomas can be treated by holding down a cotton wash cloth folded to four layers and soaked in salt water for two weeks. 

Salt helps in treating acne and boils. Place a little salt on a bandage and put it on the infected area for an hour. You can repeat the process a few times a day. 

When you have bruises, put a compress of salt and vinegar on it. 

It is also a useful way to treat headaches

To treat varicose veins, use a compress of salt water on the problematic vein, and on that, an elastic bandage. If you do this regularly, morning and evening, the veins will slowly return to normal. 

To treat foot fungus, soak your feet for 5-10 minutes in a mixture of two tablespoons of salt for every 0.5 liters of hot water. You can add some ground garlic to the mix. Repeat until fully healed. 

After getting stung by a bee, smear a bit of wet salt on the stung area - it will calm down the pain and the swelling. 

If you want smooth, healthy skin, rub your body with a salt stone before showering. 

In addition to a cosmetic treatment, you will also gain a medical benefit while ions of salt penetrate the skin and energize the body. 

A salt massage also helps to treat low blood pressure, chronic digestive problems, diabetes, and regular colds. That said, there are also possible NEGATIVE side effects, namely open wounds on the skin, rashes or bouts of eczema.

Indian scientists claim to have found 100% cure for tuberculosis

Infecting about nine million people worldwide every year, Tuberculosis is a deadly disease. Out of the nine million people infected from the disease, 32 per cent are from India. Many people don’t even realise that they have the infection as it remains dormant for years before becoming infectious.

What causes Tuberculosis?
The tuberculosis bacterium is hunted by the white blood cells called macrophages. A macrophage is an important part of our immune system. The term literally means big eaters. A macrophage is an amoeba-like organism and it’s work is to clean the body of microscopic invaders and debris. The macrophage has the innate ability to consume all the invaders including fungi, viruses, bacteria and parasites. But instead of killing the bacteria, it forms a sac-like body called granuloma around it, which keeps the bacteria dormant for as long as it’s present.

But this sac can get ruptured when your immunity is lowered due to weakness or any other illness like HIV. TB is a leading killer among people who are infected with HIV.

The new cure for tuberculosis
A team of scientists found how tuberculosis is released from the sacs granuloma formed by the macrophages around them. The granuloma keeps the TB bacteria under control. The topic has been researched and studied for years with no positive result.

ResultsScientists found that these TB bacteria secrete a protein called MPT63, which might be the reason behind the sac break. When there is acidity, these protein structures change their formation and suddenly become toxic to the host cells (macrophages). This ends up killing the cell and releasing the bacteria.

The Head of Structural Biology and Bioinformatics Division said, “Our team would now try to validate these findings in field strains of TB bacillus and see whether they can be used to develop new therapeutic interventions”.

Now with this discovery, scientists will begin looking for methods to negate the effect of the MPT63 protein. Keeping the TB locked-in permanently and saving millions of patients every year.

New Tuberculosis drug may shorten treatment time for patients

A new experimental antibiotic for tuberculosis (TB) may be more effective than isoniazid, a decades-old drug which is currently one of the standard treatments for the disease, a study claims. In mouse models, the drug showed a much lower tendency to develop resistance, according to the study.

The drug remains in the tissues where the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria reside for longer, killing them more effectively."The goal of TB drug development programmes is to develop universal treatment regimens that will shorten and simplify TB treatment in patients, which typically takes at least six months, and sometimes more than a year," said a researcher.

The new drug, called AN12855, has several advantages over isoniazid, which requires conversion to its active form by a Mycobacterial enzyme, KatG, in order to kill the pathogen. This creates a couple of problems. First, in some M tuberculosis, KatG is nonfunctional. That does not make M tuberculosis any less pathogenic, but it prevents the drug from working. That creates an easy avenue for the development of drug resistance, researchers said

Under selection pressure from isoniazid, the tuberculosis bacteria with nonfunctional KatG -- those that do not activate the drug -- are the ones that reproduce. Under these circumstances, drug resistance may develop. A hallmark of human tuberculosis is the presence of "heterogeneous pulmonary disease."

This includes a host defence involving confinement of invading bacteria within small cyst-like bodies called granulomas, that lack vasculature and often prevent the drug from reaching the pathogen. Most mouse TB models used for clinical evaluation of new drugs fail to produce this advanced lung pathology. Thus, they give little insight into how drugs might behave in the presence of advanced lung disease that is typical of human tuberculosis.

In the study, the researchers used a new TB mouse model that develops these M tuberculosis-containing granulomas to compare isoniazid and AN12855."We discovered that the drugs differed dramatically with respect to their abilities to kill the pathogen in highly diseased tissues. AN12855 proved more effective, without selecting for appreciable drug resistance," he said .

The superior efficacy is not surprising: AN12855 was superior in gaining entry and being retained in the granulomas, where M tuberculosis is found in highest numbers, he said."Whether this translates into improvements in the treatment of human disease will be the subject of future studies," he said.

"Our studies also further validate the use of a new TB mouse efficacy model (dubbed C3HeB/FeJ) as a research tool to study the impact of heightened human-like disease states on the activity and distribution of TB antibiotics that are in various stages of development," he said. That could accelerate the development of better TB treatments, researchers said.

Leprosy: Types, Diagnosis, Treatment

There around four million patients of leprosy world-wide with 750,000 new cases being detected every year. 

Though the incidents are decreasing in India through the efforts of the National Leprosy Eradication programme, and India had achieved elimination of leprosy as a public health problem in 2005, it has the largest number of leprosy patients in the world and pockets of high endemicity report thousands of new cases every year.

Leprosy is a chronic granulomatous disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium Leprae. It mainly affects skin, nerves, eyes and respiratory system.

Visible disabilities and sequele are associated with historical social stigma. It is also called as Hansen's disease. As this bacteria is extremely slow growing, it is difficult to isolate in vitro cultures.
"In 2015, a total of 127,326 new cases were detected accounting for 60% of the global total of new cases, compared with 125,785 new cases in 2014. 

Because of social stigma, many cases present late to the hospitals. The disease is completely curable if diagnosed early, late presentations are associated with complications. If left untreated, leprosy can cause progressive and permanent damage to the skin, nerves, limbs, and eyes.

Types:
Leprosy can be classified on the basis of clinical manifestations and skin smear results. In the classification based on skin smears, patients showing negative smears at all sites are grouped as paucibacillary leprosy, while those showing positive smears at any site are grouped as having multibacillary leprosy.

Diagnosis:
Skin biopsy, nasal smears, or both are used to assess for acid-fast bacilli using Fite stain. PCR and recombinant DNA technology have allowed for the development of gene probes with M leprae-specific sequences.

Treatment:
WHO has introduced multidrug therapy for the treatment involving Rifampicin, Dapsone and Clofazimine. New drugs that are approved for treatment are Quinolones like Pefloxacin and Ofloxacin, Minocyclin and Clarithromycin. Free MDT was initially funded by a Foundation, and since 2000 it is donated through an agreement with a company which recently committed to extend its donation to 2020, steroids have been used to treat nerve damage associated with leprosy but the studies have shown no additional benefit.
