New hope for skin cancer in the form of arthritis drug

Drugs that are used to cure different ailments have often been found to contain cancer-treating elements.

In another such development, new research has shown that combining the treatment for the most deadly form of skin cancer with a common anti-rheumatic drug could provide more effective results.
Many times, chemotherapy drugs don't reach the cancer cells because of which patients don't respond well to the treatment.

The findings showed that using "leflunomide" – an immunosuppressive drug approved for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis – in combination with another melanoma drug, selumetinib almost completely stopped the growth of a melanoma tumour in mice.

"By combining therapies, it's possible to attack the disease from several angles, which makes it harder for the melanoma to develop resistance to any of the drugs," said a scientist.

"Our research has shown that there could also be further benefits – by joining these two drugs together you may be able to enhance their effects, getting a treatment that is more than the sum of its parts," the scientist said.

Although only five percent of skin cancer cases involve melanoma, it causes the majority of deaths from the disease. If caught early, melanoma is very treatable, but once the cancer has metastasised or spread, then treatment becomes more difficult.

The research,  tested leflunomide's effect against melanoma with selumetinib.

When the team tested leflunomide in the lab, it was found to work on melanoma cells irrespective of the genetic signature of the cancer.

This means that leflunomide has the potential to be used in all melanoma cases, not just for tumours harbouring BRAF mutations, the researchers said.

However, when leflunomide was tested on melanoma cells jointly with selumetinib, the scientists found it was more effective than either drug on its own.

In mice, the two drugs together almost completely halted the growth of the tumour over a 12 day period, which far outstripped the effect of either drug used in isolation, the researchers said.

NATURAL OILS CAN HELP FOR PAIN----

Essential oils are natural extracts from the core of a plant. They are produced as a by-product of photosynthesis (a process that converts light energy into chemical energy). Each extracted aromatic essence has its own unique chemical constituent, and each has its own specific therapeutic properties. When used correctly, the oils work to balance, harmonize and promote health of the body, mind and spirit. They work on a physiological, psychological and spiritual level, enhancing your innate healing process.
The oils work on the mind and body in two ways:
1. Through inhalation: Essential oils are volatile substances. When inhaled, the scent works its way up the nose, where thousands of receptors identify with its fragrant smell. At this point, the scent is processed by the limbic system in the brain (where emotional and psychological responses are processed) triggering a range of responses, from relaxing to stimulating.
2. Through skin absorption: Essential oils (usually blended with a base oil - more details below) can be rubbed onto the affected area. Upon application, the oils work their way through all the layers of the skin, and into the bloodstream.
So, the next time you're in need of a little pain relief, opt for any of these 12 essential oils to help ease your aches and pains quickly.

Disclaimer: Natural remedies should always be handled with care, and essential oils are no exception to the rule. Top tips
      • Combinations tend to work better, though their smell can at times be a little overpowering. When combining oils together, be sure to get the right dosage. As a rule of thumb, bear in mind that you need to dilute 12 drops essential oil to 1fl. oz (30ml) carrier oil. Therefore, if combining two oils, add 6 drops of one oil and 6 of another. If using three essential oils, add four drops of each, and so forth.
      • Get as much out of the oils as you possibly can by applying a hot compress to the affected area after the dilution has been massaged into your skin. The heat and moisture from the compress will help the oils penetrate your skin and enter the body.
      • Use the oils two to four times a day, depending on the intensity of your pain. If using four times a day is not enough, seek medical advice.
      • When purchasing essential oils, look out for oils that are all-natural and pesticide free.
