We often stain plastic objects, then attempt to remove the stains by rubbing them with water and soap. That's the hard way. The easiest solution to this is found in your fridge. Grab some butter, rub it generously onto the ink-stained plastic, and let it soak. After 20-40 minutes, wipe off the butter and there you go - your plastic looks like new. 


3. Untangle Jewelry

Instead of letting it get to you, remember our friend butter. Rub a small quantity of butter onto the entwined area and using a fork, work out the entanglement.

Respiratory disorders in children can now be detected via smartphone

The diagnosis of childhood respiratory disorders can now be readily done with an automated cough analysis technology incorporated in a smartphone app, according to a recent study. This system delivers high diagnostic accuracy ( between 81-97%) in detecting respiratory disorders, including pneumonia, RAD, croup, bronchitis, upper and lower respiratory tract disorders.

In children, respiratory disorders are the 2nd most common reason for admission to the emergency department and is a major disease burden worldwide. The differential diagnosis of respiratory disorders can be challenging even for experienced clinicians with access to diagnostic support services.


Diagnostic delays and errors can result in an increased risk of morbidity, antibiotic stewardship and mortality.


Researchers compared diagnoses made by the algorithm to those from a clinical adjudication panel ( who had access to all medical records and diagnostic support service results) in order to determine positive and negative percent agreement for a number of respiratory conditions.


It can be difficult to differentiate between respiratory disorders in children, even for experienced doctors.This study demonstrates how new technology, mathematical concepts, machine learning and clinical medicine can be successfully combined to produce completely new diagnostic tests utilising the expertise of several disciplines, said a Dr.


To develop the app, the authors used similar technology to that used in speech recognition, which they trained to recognise features of coughs which are characteristic of 5 different respiratory diseases. The researchers then used the app to categorise the coughs of 585 children between ages 29 days to 12 years who were being cared for at 2 hospitals.


The accuracy of the automated cough analyser was determined by comparing its diagnosis to a diagnosis reached by a panel of pediatricians after they had reviewed results of imaging, laboratory findings, hospital charts and conducted all available clinical investigations.


The authors note that the technology developed for this study is able to provide a diagnosis without the need for a clinical examination by a doctor in person, addressing a major limiting feature of existing telehealth consultations, which are used to provide clinical services remotely. removing the need for a clinical examination may allow targeted treatments to begin sooner.


The Dr. said, as the tool does not rely on clinical investigations, it can be used by health care providers of all levels of training and expertise. However, we would advise that where possible the tool should be used in conjunction with a clinician to maximise the clinical accuracy.

MRI can be used to diagnose heart disease

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) can be used to measure how the heart uses oxygen for both healthy patients and those with heart disease, a study has found.

Reduced blood flow to the heart muscle is the leading cause of death in the Western world, said researchers. Currently, the diagnostic tests available to measure blood flow to the heart require injection of radioactive chemicals or contrast agents that change the MRI signal and detect the presence of disease.


There are small but finite patients associated risks and it is not recommended for a variety of patients including those with poor kidney function. This new method, cardiac functional MRI ( cMRI), does not require needles or chemicals being injected into the body, said a researcher. It eliminates the existing risks and can be used on all patients, he said. Our discovery shows that we can use MRI to study heart muscle activity, he said.  have been successful in using a pre-clinical model and now we are preparing to show this can be used to accurately detect heart disease in patients,he said.


Repeat exposure to carbon-di-oxide is used to test how well the heart's blood vessels are working to deliver oxygen to the muscle. A breathing machine changes the concentration of carbon0di-oxide in the blood. This change should result in a change in blood flow to the heart, but does not happen when disease is present. The cMRI method reliably detects whether these changes are present. Other researchers have explored oxygenation-sensitive MRI but initial results contained a high level of noise with blurry images, Project leader, believed that the noise was actually variation in the heart's processing of oxygen.


He engineered a way to average this variation and through testing, the team discovered that the noise is actually a new way to study how the heart works. We've opened the door to a new era and totally novel way of doing cardiac stress testing to identify patients with ischemic heart disease, the researcher said.This approach overcomes the limitations of all in the current diagnostics-- there would no longer be a need for injections or physical stress testing like running or treadmills, he said.


Using MRI will not only be safer, than present methods, but also provide more detailed information and much earlier on in the disease process, he said. Following initial testing through clinical trials, he said the technique may be used with patients clinically within a few years. In addition to studying coronary artery disease, the method could be used in other cases where heart blood flow is affected such as the effects of a heart attack or damages to the heart during cancer treatment. Due to its minimal risk, the new tool could be safely used with the same patient multiple times to better select the right treatment and find out early on if it is working.

1. Stopped ears

Drip a few drops of warm baby oil into the stopped ear. Lay on your side or make sure the ear is in horizontal position, and gently drip. Let it stay like this for a few minutes and then reverse your head and let it dribble out, cleaning the ear with a paper towel.

2. Cracked heels

To treat dry and cracked heels, rub a little baby oil before bed time. Cover your legs with socks to keep the bed sheets and blankets from getting dirty.

3. Removing a stubborn ring

To remove a ring from your finger that just won't budge, use baby oil as a lubricant. Smear a generous amount on your finger and gently start turning the ring, until it slides off.

4. Removing bandages and Band-Aids 

If you have sensitive skin, reduce the discomfort by smearing a coat of baby oil on the sticky parts of the bandage. Start peeling the bandage gently, until it is removed.

5. Removing paint

If you've used paint and got dirty, spill some baby oil and rub, then wash with soap and water for full removal of the stain.

Chia seeds, tiny but highly beneficial



Chia seeds were a staple of the Mexican civilizations- Aztecs & Mayans. It seems that they’re aware of their health benefits & included them as key components in their diets. These seeds owe their benefits to their high content of precursors of Omega 3 fats. The content edges out even flaxseeds & fish oil. The oval-shaped, nutty flavored seeds are packed with huge amounts of beneficial fats ( Omega-3), which are valuable in the present day diets, which are deficient in these.

Low levels of Omega-3 fats are associated with several inflammatory conditions such as allergies, heart disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, depression, pre-menstrual syndrome, certain types of cancer, compromised immunity & brain function. These fats get converted to prostaglandins-hormone like substances which help balance the immune system, decrease inflammation, decrease blood pressure & decrease the tendency to form blood clots.

Other beneficial constituents of chia seeds are- phytoestrogens ( ligans), high dietary fiber, & modest levels of proteins containing all 8 essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals & certain anti-oxidants. These seeds area good source of soluble & insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber helps lower cholesterol & blood glucose levels, thus lowers risk of diabetes & heart disease, while the insoluble fiber helps prevent constipation & may reduce the risk of colon cancer.

How to use chia seeds
Start with 1 teaspoon daily & slowly increase to 2 tsp in 7-10 days. These seeds need not be ground, can be eaten raw as whole seeds, ground or as sprouts. Once the seeds are ground, store in air tight containers in the fridge or freezer.

RADIOTHERAPY (RADIATION THERAPY) -what it is, types, uses, side effects


What is radiotherapy?
Radiation therapy (also called radiotherapy or X-ray therapy) uses high powered x-rays or radioactive seeds to kill cancer cells. The aim of radiotherapy is to cure cancer, where possible, whilst maintaining acceptable function and cosmesis. Radiotherapy can be used alone or with chemotherapy or surgery. Where cure is not possible, the aim is the relief of symptoms (palliation) of cancer, thereby improving the person's well-being.
Action of radiotherapy
Radiotherapy works by destroying cells, either directly or by interfering with cell reproduction using high-energy X-rays, electron beams or radioactive isotopes. When a radiated cell attempts to divide and reproduce itself, it fails to do so and dies in the attempt. Normal cells are able to repair the effects of radiotherapy better than are malignant and other abnormal cells. Thus, normal cells are able to recover from exposure to radiation and maintain integrity and viability better than malignant cells.

If the dose and delivery of radiotherapy are well chosen and the disease is localised to the region of treatment, the cancer dies, whereas the normal tissues survive and the patient is made well again. If fewer than all the cancer cells are killed, improvement may only be short lived and the cancer may regrow. Since normal tissues are less able to withstand the effects of further radiotherapy, repeated treatments at a later date are seldom beneficial.

Types of radiation therapy include:


  • External beam radiation is the most common form. This method carefully aims high powered x-rays directly at the tumour from outside of the body.
  • Internal beam radiation uses radioactive seeds that are placed directly into or near the tumour. Internal beam radiation is also called interstitial radiation or brachytherapy. 
  • Radiation during surgery (intraoperative radiation) , which involves external beam radiation focused directly at the area that needs radiation during an operation. 
  • Systemic radiation, which involves a radioactive substance that can be injected into a vein. The substance travels throughout the body, delivering radiation.
 Uses of radiotherapy 
Radiotherapy is the principal treatment for various skin cancers; cancers of the mouth, nasal cavity, pharynx and larynx; brain tumours and many gynaecological, lung cancers, and prostate cancers. Radiotherapy plays a leading role in conjunction with surgery and/or chemotherapy in breast cancer, bowel cancer, bladder cancer, Hodgkin's disease, leukaemia and lymphomas, thyroid cancer, childhood cancers, gynaecological and testis tumours, as well as many other cancers and certain benign conditions.

Radiation therapy can have many side effects. These side effects depend on the part of the body receiving radiation, the dose of radiation, and how often the therapy is given. The side effects include:

  • Hair loss 
  • Pain 
  • Red, burning skin 
  • Shedding of the outer layer of skin (desquamation) 
  • Increased skin colouring (hyperpigmentation)
  • Death of skin tissue (atrophy) 
  • Itching
  • Fatigue and malaise
