New robotic device to help patients with spinal cord injury

Researchers from Columbia University in the US have invented a robotic device that can be used to assist and train people with Spinal Cord Injuries (SCIs). The team consisting of an Indian, said the device delivers forces on the torso when the user performs upper body movements beyond the postural stability limits while sitting. The device can help the patient to sit more stably, an advance which may aid the recovery of patients with SCI.

The robotic device— the Trunk-Support Trainer, or TruST—is a motorised-cable driven belt placed on the torso of people with SCI to determine their control limits of posture, and workspace area while sitting.

The study, published on Monday in the journal Spinal Cord Series and Cases, is the first to measure and define the sitting workspace of patients with SCI based on their active trunk control.

"We designed TruST for people with SCIs who are typically wheelchair users," said study co-author Sunil Agrawal from Columbia University.

"We found that TruST not only prevents patients from falling, but also maximizes trunk movements beyond patients' postural control, or balance limits," he added.

Five subjects participated in a pilot study examining TruST with the Postural Star-Sitting Test.

In this customised postural test, the participants were required to follow a ball with their head and move their trunk as far as possible, without using their hands.

The users repeated the test in eight directions, following which the researchers used the results to compute the sitting workspace of each individual.

TruST was customised for each subject, the researchers said, so that they could apply personalised assistive force fields on the torso while the participants performed the same movements again.

With the new robotic device, the subjects could reach further during the trunk excursions in all eight directions.

According to the study, TruST significantly expanded the sitting workspace around their bodies, on an average of about 25 per cent more.

"The capacity of TruST to deliver continuous force-feedback personalised for the user's postural limits opens new frontiers to implement motor learning-based paradigms to retrain functional sitting in people with SCI. We think TruST is a very promising SCI rehab tool," said study co-author Victor Santamaria, a physical therapist at Columbia University.

Agrawal and his team are now exploring the use of TruST to improve the trunk control of adults and children with SCI.

"The robotic platform will be used to train participants with SCI by challenging them to move their trunk over a larger workspace, with TruST providing assist-as-needed force fields to safely bring the subjects back to their neutral sitting posture. This force field will be adjusted to the needs of the participants over time as they improve their workspace and posture control," Agrawal said.

Stem cell protein may help find blood cancer cure

Researchers have identified a stem cell protein that may play an important role in finding cure for blood cancer.
The study, done on mice, suggests a stem cell protein called Asrij is a novel regulator of wild type tumour suppressor p53 stability in hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs).

It could help design targeted therapies for myeloproliferative disease, a group of slow-growing blood cancers, according to researchers.

"We provide a new mouse model resembling myeloproliferative disease and identify a post-translational regulator of wild type p53 essential for maintaining HSC quiescence that could be a potential target for pharmacological intervention," the team said.

According to the study, inactivation of the tumour suppressor p53 is essential for unrestrained growth of cancers. But only 11 per cent of hematological malignancies have mutant p53.

Mechanisms that cause wild type p53 dysfunction and promote leukemia are inadequately deciphered, suggests the study.

The stem cell protein Asrij is mis-expressed in several human hematological malignancies and implicated in the p53 pathway and DNA damage response, the team said.

For the study, the team generated the first Asrij null (knockout, KO) in mice and showed they are viable and fertile with no gross abnormalities. However, by six months, they exhibited increased peripheral blood cell counts, splenomegaly and an expansion of bone marrow HSCs with higher myeloid output.

5 Keys to Eating Healthier and Feeling Better

Tips on quick and easy changes you can make to your eating habits right away that will set you on the path to feeling way, way better:

1. Eat 4 to 8 cups of fresh, leafy greens every single day.
This is the first secret to better health and a sexy glow! Greens encourage the growth, diversity and stability of healthy bacteria in the gut, which is the key to overall wellness. They’re also incredibly high in water content, which helps to ultra hydrate your cells and for longer periods of time. One of our mentors and microbiome specialists, says it best: “Greens are the least-consumed food in the standard American diet, and the most essential for inner and outer health. They come the closest of any food to meeting our ideal nutritional requirements. It probably wouldn’t surprise you to know that romaine lettuce has more fiber than sirloin, but you may not know that calorie for calorie, it has double the protein, ten times the amount of iron, and a hundred times more calcium. If you asked me to recommend the one thing that would have the biggest impact on the health of your gut and skin, it would be to eat as many leafy green vegetables as you can. If you do nothing else, commit to eating leafy greens every day for the next ten days and I promise you, amazing things will start to happen inside and out.”

2. Take a daily probiotic and take your gut health seriously.

Research shows that your microbiome—the trillions of healthy bacteria in and your body, weighing up to 6 pounds!—controls everything from your immunity to your skin to your weight to your digestion to your moods. A probiotic is a great way to add healthy bacterial strains to your gut microbiome. Pair it with a plant-rich diet that encourages the right bacteria to grow, and you will find you have more energy, a clearer complexion, less inflammation and fewer autoimmune symptoms.

3. Eat as many colors as possible.

Fruits, veggies and other plant foods get their colors from the phytochemicals and antioxidants they contain. By eating a diverse diet rich in colorful plant foods, you can be sure you’re getting the full range of nutrients your body needs.

4. Eat your water.

Hydration doesn’t just mean drinking water; it means eating water-rich foods like romaine lettuce, melon, tomatoes, cucumbers and zucchini. The water in these plant foods is bound up in their fibrous structure, providing deep, sustained hydration for your cells and plumping them up for smooth, bright, ageless skin. Focusing on water-rich foods completely changed our skin!

5. Know that your thoughts become things.

The first step in the manifestation process is giving your dreams form by thinking them, writing them down, and speaking them, so be conscious of what you are thinking as you start your day, sit down for your breakfast, and look in the mirror! All of the purest plants in the world will not create a body you love if you are stuck in a cycle of negativity, hate, and criticism. What do you want to create? A loving relationship? A successful career? A sexy body? Start to turn those dreams into things by saying to yourself that they already are: I am in a loving, passionate, secure and mutually supportive relationship that enriches my life every day. I have a career that is fulfilling, stimulating and rewarding, and I am proud of my achievements and successes at work. My body is beautiful, strong and sexy! I love and appreciate my body for all the ways it supports me every day.

Health benefits of barley

Barley is a simple grain readily available but very few of us know its many health and beauty benefits. Relatively low in calories, high in bran and fiber, the humble grain is packed with vitamins and nutrients. Here go some benefits of the wonder grain:

Helps you lose weight
Barley which is low in calories as compared to other grains, helps to reduce weight because of several kinds of essential amino acids and also because of its fiber content. Barley modulates your blood sugar levels, thus avoiding the sugar peaks and drops usually associated with the fat storage process.

Helps stabilize blood pressure
A study that compared different grain combinations; showed that adults who increased their intake of barley experienced a reduction in blood pressure.

Reduces symptoms of arthritis
Barley has copper, which may be helpful in reducing the symptoms of arthritis. It is said that copper disarms free radicals, thus helping cell regeneration.

Helps to prevent Osteoporosis
Barley contains manganese, phosphorus and copper, which are good for healthy bones. Barley juice is very high in calcium, making your bones stronger.

Healthy teeth
Barley is rich in phosphorus, calcium, and Vitamin C which are great for healthy bones and teeth.
