Social netwroks essential for adults' well-being

Healthy social relationships and connections have found to be beneficial and a booster for adults, irrespective of the number of friends and how large their circle is.

Stereotypes of aging tend to paint older adults in many cultures as sad and lonely. But the research shows that older adults' smaller networks didn't undermine social satisfaction and well-being. In fact, older adults tend to report better well-being than younger adults, said the lead author of the study.

Researchers analyzed data from 2 online surveys , a nationally representative survey of adults recruited through a variety of approaches ( e.g. random digital dialing and address-based sampling).
Study participants assessed the number of people from different social networks ( e.g., friends, family, neighbours) and peripheral others ( e.g., coworkers, school or childhood relations, people who provide a service) with whom they had " regular contact in the past 6 months".

Contact included face-to-face, by phone or email or on the internet. Participants also rated feelings of well-being over the prior 30 days.

Researchers found older adults had smaller social networks than younger adults, but the number of close friends was unrelated to age.

Younger adults had large social networks consisting of mostly peripheral others, perhaps because online social media networking sites have facilitated the maintenance of increasingly large and impersonal social networks, according to the authors.

Only the reported number of close friends was associated with social satisfaction and well-being across the adult life-span. The relationship between the number of close friends and well-being held, even after accounting for the number of family members, neighbours and peripheral others, which was not additionally associated with well-being.

The relationship of the reported number of close friends with greater social satisfaction and well-being did not vary with age, suggesting the importance of close friendships across the lifespan.

This is consistent with observed patterns among Facebook users who reported greater well-being if they perceived more actual friends on their online social networks, according to the researcher.
Loneliness has less to do with the number of friends you've, and more to do with how you feel about your friends, she said.

It's often the younger adults who admit to having negative perceptions of their friends. Loneliness occurs in people of all ages. If you feel lonely, it may be more helpful to make a positive connection with a friend than to try and seek out new people to meet, the researcher added.

Doing household chores don't influence child's self-control development.

While assigning household chores to kids is considered an essential component in their development, it is found that this might not help better their self-control, which in turn can predict future job outcomes.

Self-control is a coveted personality trait that allows people to suppress inappropriate impulses, focus their attention and perform an action when there is strong tendency to avoid it, according to the findings published recently.

For the study, researchers examined data from a 10-year longitudinal study of Mexican-origin youth assessed at ages 10,12,14, 16 and 19 in which self-control was reported by the children separately.
The team examined whether household chores and self-control co-developed from ages 10-16.

We found no evidence of co-developmental associations between chores and effortful or self-control, with 4 out of 4 of our hypotheses receiving no empirical support, said a Prof. of psychology.

These null effects were surprising given the strong lay conceptions and theoretical basis for our predictions. Maybe chores don't matter for personality development, but they still predict future chore behaviour, added the Prof.-

Previous research indicated that doing more homework was related to an increase in conscientiousness, a personality trait similar to self-control, prompting Damian to question whether household chores would have a similar effect in personality development.

Despite recent advances in understanding the origin of self-control, no known research  existed investigating the co-development of chores and self-control.

Researchers also explored a matter unrelated to household chores-whether initial levels of self-control at age 10, along with improved levels from age 10-16, predicted better work outcomes in young adulthood.

In this case, the answer was yes. Both initial levels of self-control and increases in self-control predicted positive future job outcomes.

We found that children who had higher self-control at age 10 had less job stress and better job fir 9 years later. Additionally, children whose self-control showed positive changes from age 10-16 ( regardless of their initial self-control level at age 10) had higher job satisfaction and job autonomy 9 years later, said the Prof.

The results suggest that improving one's level of self-control, regardless of where you start, will help you later in life and that's important to know. It's an argument for striving to improve over time, he opined.

Blue light exposure speeds up aging process!

Imagining a day without taking a look at your phones or laptop seems impossible today but being in front of screens for a long time has been found to affect our aging process!

Continued and prolonged exposure to blue light, which emanates from your phone, computer, and household fixtures, might affect the longevity or accelerate the aging process, even when the screen isn't directly shining in your eyes.

This study, suggests that the blue wavelengths produced by light-emitting diodes damage cells in the brain as well as retinas.

It involved a widely used organism, Drosophila melanogaster, the common fruit fly, an important model organism because of the cellular and developmental mechanisms, it shares with other animals and humans.

Researchers examined how flies responded to daily 12-hour exposure to blue LED light -- similar to the prevalent blue wavelength in devices like phones and tablets -- and found that the light accelerated aging.

The flies exposed to blue light showed damage to their retinal cells and brain neurons and had impaired locomotion -- the flies' ability to climb the walls of their enclosures, a common behavior, was diminished.

Some of the flies in the experiment were mutants that do not develop eyes, and even those eyeless flies displayed brain damage and locomotion impairments, suggesting flies didn't have to see the light to be harmed by it.

"The fact that the light was accelerating aging in the flies was very surprising to us at first. We'd measured the expression of some genes in old flies, and found that stress-response, protective genes were expressed if flies were kept in the light. We hypothesised that light was regulating those genes. Then we started asking, what is it in the light that is harmful to them, and we looked at the spectrum of light," said the lead researcher.

"It was very clear cut that although light without blue slightly shortened their lifespan, just blue light alone shortened their lifespan very dramatically," added the researcher.

Natural light is crucial for the body's circadian rhythm -- the 24-hour cycle of physiological processes such as brain wave activity, hormone production and cell regeneration that are important factors in feeding and sleeping patterns, the researcher noted.

"But there is evidence suggesting that increased exposure to artificial light is a risk factor for sleep and circadian disorders," she added.

The researcher went on to explain that with the prevalent use of LED lighting and device displays, humans are subjected to increasing amounts of light in the blue spectrum since commonly used LEDs emit a high fraction of blue light.

In the meantime, there are a few things people can do to help themselves that don't involve sitting for hours in darkness, the researchers say. Eyeglasses with amber lenses will filter out the blue light and protect your retinas. And phones, laptops and other devices can be set to block blue emissions.

"In the future, there may be phones that auto-adjust their display based on the length of usage the phone perceives," said the lead author.

Stem cell protein may help find blood cancer cure

Researchers have identified a stem cell protein that may play an important role in finding cure for blood cancer.
The study, done on mice, suggests a stem cell protein called Asrij is a novel regulator of wild type tumour suppressor p53 stability in hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs).

It could help design targeted therapies for myeloproliferative disease, a group of slow-growing blood cancers, according to researchers.

"We provide a new mouse model resembling myeloproliferative disease and identify a post-translational regulator of wild type p53 essential for maintaining HSC quiescence that could be a potential target for pharmacological intervention," the team said.

According to the study, inactivation of the tumour suppressor p53 is essential for unrestrained growth of cancers. But only 11 per cent of hematological malignancies have mutant p53.

Mechanisms that cause wild type p53 dysfunction and promote leukemia are inadequately deciphered, suggests the study.

The stem cell protein Asrij is mis-expressed in several human hematological malignancies and implicated in the p53 pathway and DNA damage response, the team said.

For the study, the team generated the first Asrij null (knockout, KO) in mice and showed they are viable and fertile with no gross abnormalities. However, by six months, they exhibited increased peripheral blood cell counts, splenomegaly and an expansion of bone marrow HSCs with higher myeloid output.

What women eat during pregnancy can modulate risk of ADHD in children

According to a new study, the risk of children  developing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms can be modulated by  mother’s diet during  while they are pregnant. The study,  had examined samples of umbilical cord plasma to calculate the levels of omega-6 and omega-3 which tend to reach the foetus. According to statistics, a higher omega-6: omega-3 ratio can be linked  to a higher risk of the ADHD symptoms at the age of 7.

Omega-6 and omega-3 can be termed as the  long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids which have  a crucial role in the function and architecture of the central nervous system, mainly in the later stages of gestation.

These two fatty acids compete for incorporation into cell membranes and are primarily obtained through diet. Since omega-6 and omega-3 have opposing physiological functions, the former promotes systemic pro-inflammatory states, while the latter promotes anti-inflammatory states, a balanced intake of these two fatty acids is important. Previous research had shown that children with ADHD symptoms have a higher omega-6: omega-3 ratio.

The authors studied data from 600 children living in four Spanish regions (Asturias, Basque Country, Catalonia, and Valencia) who are participating in the INMA Project. They analysed umbilical cord plasma samples and data from questionnaires completed by the children`s mothers. The ADHD symptoms were assessed using two standard questionnaires: the first completed by the children`s teachers at the age of four years, and the second by their parents at the age of seven years.

The results showed that, at the age of seven years, the number of ADHD symptoms increased by 13 per cent per each unit increase in the omega-6: omega-3 ratio in umbilical cord plasma. The study analysed the number of symptoms in the children who met the diagnostic criteria for the ADHD (minimum six symptoms) and also in the children with a smaller number of ADHD symptoms. The ratio of the two fatty acids was associated with the number of the ADHD symptoms present but not with the diagnosis of the disorder, and only in the assessment carried out at seven years of age.

The authors suggest that the assessment carried out at four years of age may have been affected by a measurement error because the ADHD symptoms reported at early ages may be caused by a neurodevelopmental delay falling within the normal range.”Our findings are in line with previous studies that established a relationship between the omega-6: omega-3 ratio in mothers and various early neurodevelopmental outcomes,” commented a researcher and lead author of the study.

“Although the association was not clinically significant, our findings are important at the level of the population as a whole,” noted the author.”If a large proportion of the population is exposed to a high omega-6: omega-3 ratio, the distribution for the ADHD symptom scores would likely move to the right and the prevalence of extreme values would increase, leading to a negative impact on the community`s health costs and productivity,” he added.

“This study adds more evidence to the growing body of research on the importance of maternal diet during pregnancy,” commented the co-author of the study.”The nutrient supply during the earliest stages of life is essential in that it programs the structure and function of the organs, and this programming, in turn, has an impact on health at every stage of life. As the brain takes a long time to develop, it is particularly vulnerable to misprogramming. Alterations of this sort could, therefore, lead to neurodevelopmental disorders.”
