What To Eat and Drink When You Are Dehydrated

One of the most unpleasant things about the summer is the increased risk of dehydration. But it’s not just the heat that can make you dehydrated - it can also happen as a result of overexertion, taking certain medications, or digestive issues. You might feel faint, tired, dizzy, and thirsty. Other symptoms of dehydration are a dry mouth or trouble focusing.

Fortunately, drinking water is not the only way to replenish your body when you’re dehydrated. There are several fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and other foods and drinks that can be just as helpful. Here are 10 hydrating foods to incorporate into your diet in the summer.

1. Watermelon and other types of melons
10 Foods and Drinks to Have When Dehydrated watermelon and cantaloupe
Fruits and vegetables, in general, have a high water content, which makes them a great hydrating snack. This is especially true for watermelons, honeydew melons, and cantaloupes. A single cup of diced watermelon, for instance, is nearly 92% water, which is about 4.7 oz (139 ml) water. An equal serving of honeydew melon or cantaloupe consists of about 90% water.

If your dehydration was brought on by heat, let the melon cool down in the fridge before eating it. You can also freeze melon and eat it or suck on it if you’re experiencing nausea. This method will introduce liquids to your system very gently, without upsetting your stomach.

2. Cucumber
In addition to containing 95% water, cucumbers are rich in anti-inflammatory compounds, vitamins, and minerals. Not only do cucumbers promote hydration, but they also have anti-aging properties, according to preliminary research.

Another upside of cucumbers is that they are readily available everywhere all year round. They don’t have to be plain either.

3. Milk
A glass of milk is a good option for rehydrating the body because it contains lots of helpful electrolytes. Electrolytes are minerals that help hydrate the body and keep your heart beating in a regular rhythm. They are lost through sweating. Therefore, it’s essential to constantly renew them through drinking water and other liquids.

One experiment in 72 adult men found that both whole milk and skim milk were more hydrating than water 3-4 hours after consumption. This is because milk contains nutrients water doesn’t: protein, calcium, and potassium. These compounds help your body slow down the rate at which it absorbs fluids. The natural sodium found in milk also helps the body hang onto the fluids for a longer period of time.

4. Cottage Cheese

Many nutritionists recommend cottage cheese because it makes you feel full quickly. This is thanks to its high water content - cottage cheese is 80% water. Similarly to milk, cottage cheese is a good source of calcium and protein. So it both hydrates the body and helps it absorb fluids more efficiently.

5. Gazpacho
10 Foods and Drinks to Have When Dehydrated gazpacho
Gazpacho is a raw tomato and vegetable soup popular in Spain and Portugal, particularly during the summer. Gazpacho is a very hydrating food thanks to its main ingredient - tomatoes. A one-cup serving of tomatoes consists of 94% water, and it will also provide you with 10% of the required daily value of potassium. Getting enough potassium is important for various reasons, including managing blood pressure and warding off heart disease.

To make gazpacho, follow this simple recipe:

Ingredients:
2 cups tomato juice

4 medium tomatoes, peeled and finely chopped

1/2 cup chopped, seeded, and peeled cucumber

1/3 cup finely chopped onions

1/4 cup olive oil

1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

1 teaspoon sugar

1 garlic clove, minced

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper.

Instructions:
Pulse the tomatoes until they form a puree. Add the cucumber, onions, garlic, vinegar, and half a teaspoon of salt. Process continuously until the ingredients are liquefied. A food processor will make gazpacho with more texture; a blender or immersion blender will make the gazpacho smoother. Cover and refrigerate until chilled for at least 4 hours.

6. Tzatziki
This Greek dip is made with yogurt and cucumber, both of which are packed with water. Yogurt alone contains 85% water and has a lot of the same benefits milk and cottage cheese do. It can be eaten as a refreshing condiment for roast veggies or simply as a dip for carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes, and other vegetables.

Salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste.

7. Coconut Water

Coconut water is a great drink to have when you’re dehydrated because it provides much-needed water as well as electrolytes and carbs. This also makes it a great drink to have post-workout.

8. Radish

Beat heat with summer coolants and less food

Rising temperatures are causing dehydration. Just water is not helping people. People are also opting for juices, sodas, sugar-sweetened drinks and other beverages to quench their thirst.

Packaged fruit juices and carbonated drinks are harmful in summer, as they have high amounts of artificial sugars. They soon leave a person thirstier. Very cold water too does not help quench thirst. It makes one feel like having more and more water.

Nutritionist Janaki Devi advises coolant fruits to deal with summers. Fruits like watermelons, muskmelons, oranges, pears, blackberries and raspberries are the right choice, as they help the body stay hydrated. In addition, coconut water, buttermilk, lassi and basil seeds in water are also of help.

Summers often make eating in afternoons a challenge. For that reason, the nutritionist says foods that are very spicy, fried, or junk like burgers, salty snacks and sauces must be avoided.

Dr. Mohammed S. Ahmed, senior general physician, says, "During summers, it is important that people opt for smaller meals. This helps body digest food easily. With temperature variations between day and evenings, human body will be able to adjust if food intake is healthy and minimal, Dr. Ahmed pointed out.

Rising temperatures are also leading to body drying up with skin cracking, particularly feet and lips. Keeping body hydrated and using moisturisers and sunscreens are helpful.

Easy & Healthy Flavored Water Recipes

Nothing beats drinking water; it’s nature’s clear and refreshing gift to our body (which happens to be comprised of over 60% water). Several years ago, “flavored water” started appearing in shops as a healthier alternative to juice, but these beverages are not as healthy as manufacturers would like you to think. Almost every flavored water bottle contains 6 teaspoons of sugar and roughly the same amount of calories you’ll find in a bottle of Coke.

However, if you would still like to enjoy the refreshing taste of flavored water, you can easily make it at home.

Preparing Flavored Water

Making flavored water is much easier than you’d think. While some of these recipes have unique preparation steps, the principal is the same: Cut the ingredients to about an inch in size, put them in a pitcher or a jar with water and leave them in the fridge overnight. If you want to speed things up a bit, use a fork to make holes in the ingredients to get their flavors out. The fruit-to-water ratio should be about one cup of fruit per liter (34oz). You can add a little sugar or honey if you want, and use soda water if you’re in a fizzy mood.

Now that you know the basics, here are 9 great recipes that are not only delicious but also have fantastic health benefits.

1. Pineapple and mint – Calms the digestive system

The dominant flavor here is the pineapple, so there’s no need to add more than a handful of mint leaves. Pineapple is rich in vitamins A and C, as well as an enzyme called bromelain, which has antibacterial properties that are essential to the digestive system. The mint boosts the pineapple’s digestive benefits by being beneficial for indigestion, nausea, vomiting and even diarrhea.

2. Cherries and lime – Improve the quality of sleep

This delicious beverage will make you forget any cravings you had for sugary drinks. It can be easily prepared if you turn the cherries into a pulp in the water (remember to pit them) and put it in the fridge for 10 minutes. This drink is fantastic for hot summer nights when you can’t seem to fall asleep. The reason is that cherries increase the body’s production of melatonin – the sleep hormone.

3. Watermelon and rosemary – Better blood flow

This delicious combination will probably become your #1 choice this summer. You only need one sprig of rosemary to upgrade the refreshing properties of the watermelon. Rosemary is known to have memory-boosting properties, as well as antibacterial properties, and can improve the health of your hair,  or even provide some protection against Alzheimer’s. The watermelon contains vitamins A and C, as well as potassium and citrulline – an amino acid that helps regulate blood pressure.

4. Orange, pineapple and ginger – Treat dehydration

Half a cup of pineapple, half an orange, and one tablespoon of ginger powder – this is all you need to make this great drink this summer. It is particularly effective in cases of dehydration, as it’s full of nutrients and electrolytes. The ginger and orange help stop nausea, as well as treating headaches. Furthermore, the ginger is beneficial to the cardiovascular system, which helps cool the body down.

5. Celery, lime, and grapes – suppress hunger pangs

OK, so celery is not a fruit, but it doesn’t make this beverage any less delicious. Add 3 celery stalks to ever liter of water (34oz), squeezed lime, and 2 cups of cut grapes. The celery reduces the feeling of hunger in addition to preventing kidney stones, gout, diabetes and heart and lung disease.

6. Rose water and mint – Stress relief

This drink is not only tasty but also looks fantastic if you add some fresh rose petals to it. Use a ¼ teaspoon of rosewater and 2 mint sprigs per 2 cups of water. The scent of the rose water alone is great at stress relief, which is why it’s often used in spas. This drink is packed with antioxidants and contains vitamins A, C, D and E.

7. Pear, ginger, vanilla and cinnamon – Prevent calcium deficiency

Pears are rich in boron – an element that helps prevent calcium deficiency in our bones. Additionally, it can lower a fever, levels of cholesterol, blood pressure and even allergy symptoms. In addition, the scent of vanilla is a known mood enhancer, cinnamon’s scent helps cognitive functions, and ginger is beneficial for women suffering from PMS.

8. Melon and cucumber – headache prevention

If you’re suffering from headaches this summer, this drink will make your life much easier. The melon is rich in potassium and healthy sugars while the cucumber adds vitamin B and electrolytes. This drink is especially helpful after drinking alcohol.

9. Orange, chia and cinnamon – joint pain relief

To a liter of water (34oz), add 2 cut oranges, 2 cinnamon sticks, 2 tablespoons of chia seeds and top it off with a teaspoon of organic maple syrup. Chia seeds are a superfood, making them spectacularly healthy. They are beneficial for weight loss, relieving joint pains and protecting the body from diabetes and heart diseases.
