10 Ways to Build Mental Strength So You Can Navigate Any Challenge Life Throws at You

Navigating life’s true challenges doesn’t require being “tough.” It requires awareness, finesse, and knowing your own mind. We got experts to answer the questions we hear most about building mental strength. Use their strategies to level up your grit game.

Can you get physically stronger without leaving your mental comfort zone?

“The body can only adapt if it faces something new, and new challenges won’t always be comfortable,” says Ebenezer Samuel, a fitness director. So basically, no. Your mind will adapt to the discomfort, too, and you’ll boost both your mental and physical strength.

The secret: Start small. “Every week, add one to whatever goal you’re chasing,” says Samuel, “whether that means doing one more pushup rep every set, adding one more minute to your morning run, or holding a plank for one more second.”

I hate failing. Is there any way to stop obsessing about what went wrong?

Start thinking like Michael Jordan. He’s considered himself a failure: By his count, he’s missed more than 9,000 shots. “Twenty-six times, I’ve been trusted to take the game- winning shot and missed,” he’s said. “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life.”

How did he move on? He moved forward. “Making a mistake is just a source of feedback informing you that you are off course,” says Lisa Stephen, a career, personal, and sports performance coach. “Use that data to focus on what to do next. Then forget the mistake. You can visualize yourself flushing it down the toilet or releasing it in a balloon. The point is to leave the mistake behind and build on what you’ve learned. You cannot perform at your best by focusing on your worst.”

Can I let go of negativity without writing a gratitude list?

Yes, by doing something for someone else. “An active approach to purging jealousy and negativity is to practice acts of kindness,” says psychiatrist Tracey Marks, by giving compliments and positive feedback to others. If you’re feeling especially generous, pay it forward at a coffee shop or drive-through. There’s some evidence that acts of generosity are linked to activity in brain regions responsible for happiness.

Still, if giving makes you frustrated (like, what about my needs?), try gratitude without the list, Dr. Marks says. Just spend a moment every morning thinking about what you’re grateful for.

My workload is ridiculous. How do I avoid burnout without dropping down the office pecking order?

Learning to deploy the word ‘no’ comes naturally to some of us but slowly to others. Many people don’t use it because they fear that they’ll lose opportunities or be seen as unwilling by employers or clients. In reality, the opposite can be true.

“My experience has been that when I say no, my value increases,” says Elizabeth Day. “When you respect yourself, others respect you more, too.” At any rate, “I can’t handle any other project” is an easier conversation to have than “I can’t handle this job anymore.”

I’m a hopeless procrastinator. How do I work up more get-up-and-go?

Let go of the concept of creative inspiration or having to be “in the zone” to do what needs to be done. There will never be a right time to get the work done, and if you’re waiting for the mood to strike, you’ll be waiting a long while.

James Clear, advocates committing to a schedule rather than to a deadline. If life gets in the way of what you need to do, cut down the size of the task—spend ten minutes on it instead of the 30 you’d intended—but always stick to the schedule. Just don’t give yourself the option to skip it.

I’m struggling with the loss of a loved one, but I need to be strong for my family. What can I do?

Being “strong” doesn’t mean holding back emotions and tears. “The way to show strength is not to be afraid to reveal your hurt,” says Dr. Marks. “When everyone is hurting, the people who depend on you will look to you as a model for how to handle themselves.” If you’re holding everything back, you may be telegraphing that grief is shameful. To be strong, show how you feel.

Reading the news often upsets and angers me. How do I reset?

That’s understandable; the news causes stress because of the sense of hopelessness and feelings of injustice it can evoke. To process difficult news, try creating boundaries around how you’re getting it and find people to have meaningful conversations about it with, recommends psychiatrist Gregory Scott Brown, M.D. Since distressing news can put your natural fight-or-flight response into overdrive, do something to cool it off, like meditation or at least watching an enjoyable non-news, nondramatic show.

Another solution: Trade passive news consumption for active discussion. Taking the Black Lives Matter movement as an example, Eugene Ellis, the founder and director of the Black, African, and Asian Therapy Network, points to the mental-health benefits of talking with others. This can also help you know what actions to take. “It’s an antidote to the feelings of powerlessness that many of us experience. When you start to engage, you discover that below the hopelessness is connection. And when you find connection, it’s easier to know what to do.”

I’m doing an ultramarathon. Is it true it’s mind over muscle?

“Ultras are probably 90% mental and 10% physical,” says Michael Wardian, a professional endurance runner who’s one of only three people to complete the Leadville 100-mile/Pikes Peak marathon combo (and  an intense race mentally and physically).

To get through an ultra or any endurance feat, “you need to have a big why. Not just running for social media but for your kids or to prove something to yourself,” he says. Also helpful: Rely on “chunking”—setting small goals like reaching the next mailbox or aid station. You don’t always have to be running to build your mental strength. “Get used to doing stuff that makes you uncomfortable,” he says. Set your alarm for 4:00 a.m.—or just do the dang dishes.

I don’t have the patience for meditation. Can I lower my stress another way?

“Yoga is an excellent way to de-stress, and it’s good for the person who can’t sit long enough to meditate,” says Dr. Marks. It also brings you stress-reduction benefits from two directions: As with meditation, you focus on breathing, which can help relax the body. “And by stretching tight muscles, you relieve tension,” she explains. You don’t have to be flexible to do yoga, and these days there are tons of virtual options for practicing it. Two of our favorites are Alo Moves and Apple Fitness +. Both offer a wide range of classes, from hour-long stress busters to ten-minute yoga snacks. (A side note: Meditation really is worth persevering with, so keep at it. Try an app like Calm, Headspace, or Ten Percent Happier to make it less boring.)

Mantras To Remove Negative Energy – Vedic Meditation Mantras

Mantras are tools to clear your thoughts and remove negative energy to help you focus or concentrate. By chanting the mantra, one can tap into the source of the power to manifest. Mantras can be chanted vocally, sub-vocally (whispering) or silently in the mind.

It is recommended to start aloud and then proceed with the more silent variations. Silent repetition does have an effect; when the frequency of any sound is high enough, it extends beyond the human range of hearing and eventually achieves stillness, which is beyond sound itself.

It has been demonstrated in a double-blind study that ultrasound probes applied to the skull can improve subjective mood, and it has been evidenced that even imagining performing musical exercises rewires and strengthens nerve connections.

Vedic Meditation Mantras

Mantras come from two sources – Vedas and Tantras. Most of the mantras that are found in the Purānas come from Tantrika sources. The power of the mantras depends on nature, quality and spiritual attainment of the person who chants them. The word “mantra” comes from mananāt trāyate iti mantra. The mantra is a sonic device to protect the mind from random thinking. In other words, the mantra is a centering device which helps us to focus on something specific.

This is How You Can Cope With the Negativity in Your Life

"If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change the way you think about it."
You may interact with negative people daily, be they friends, family members, a partner, or a colleague. You love them, you care about them, you can't just cut them out of your life, but they are negative and their negativity is eating away at you. What can you do?
The best way of dealing with life's challenges is to take a good look at ourselves and take responsibility for what we think, feel and do.
1. Give up the need to complain
Make sure you are taking responsibility for your feelings and mood. Don't go complaining that other people's negativity is affecting you, because it will only create more negativity. Take responsibility for your thoughts and feelings and see what you can do to make yourself feel better and change the existing situation.
"Whoever has limited knowledge of human nature and seeks happiness by changing everything but his own attitude, will waste his life in futile efforts."
- Samuel Johnson
2. Similarity Attracts
Good brings about good, bad brings about bad, and whether we want to or not, we pull into our lives events, situations and people that reflect our internal state. Ask yourself: "How am I feeling? Am I happy, excited, thankful and calm? Or am I anxious, frustrated and judgmental?"
You may find that you radiate misery to the environment and that part of the negative energy surrounding you is in fact a reflection of yourself.
3. Don't believe everything you think
This is definitely one of the hardest things to learn. Look closely at the negative people in your life. What is it about them that gets you going? What affects you so much? Is what they are doing really that bad or is your brain playing games with you?
Remember, the brain is configured to look for trouble, and it focuses on other's negative qualities. It'll be very hard to get it to see the positive side of things, but it doesn't mean there isn't one.
4. Focus
Ask yourself: "Am I ready to find the good in these people? Am I able to see their good qualities?" Let the answers come naturally, and make sure you are being honest with yourself.
If you feel like you're insistent and won't change the way you are looking at people and situations, don't give yourself a hard time. This takes time and patience, and when you are ready, you'll take this step. Remember, we all have good in us.
"It's so hard when I NEED to do it and so easy when I WANT to do it."
- Annie Gottlier

5. Don't make their problems YOUR problems
For their sake and yours, make sure you are not adopting their problems and becoming negative about them yourself. If you want to cure negativity, sliding down right along with the negative person won't help, it will just make it worse by validating their thought and behavioral patterns. Rather, focus on solutions, not problems. Offer that and nothing else.
6. Taking ownership
Instead of being a victim and judge, you need to take full responsibility for your thoughts and feelings, and take a different approach.
"Everything that annoys us in others can lead us to a better understanding of ourselves."
- Carl Jung.

Don't waste your time obsessing and thinking: "They are ruining my energy, making me miserable, their negative energy is infecting my own..." Instead, say to yourself: "How can I use this to my advantage? Is there something I'm doing wrong? How can I improve the situation and increase my positive energy to be stronger than their negative energy? What do I learn from all of this?"
7. Come with your own positive energy
Focusing on negative energy cannot create positive energy, and the other way around is also true. Focus on making yourself happy, enough that you have great positive energy, and you will see the negativity cringing away from it.
Remember, energy is contagious!
How to put up positive energy? Focus on the things you like about the negative people, focus on things you love about yourselves, life, and the world around you. Think of loved ones, of things that make you happy. That way, you will increase the positive energy exponentially.
If you incur negative energy by thinking about bad things, the opposite is also true, and you'll be able to hopefully 'wake up' your fellow workers. You can't focus on both of them at the same time, so choose one - happiness or misery.
8. Be part of the change you'd like to see
The world is no more than a reflection of who we are, deep inside. Try to go for a feeling of well-being, to live a positive life, a merry life, one that has love, trust, and the pursuit of happiness. We cannot change others, but only ourselves. This is the only way to change the world.
Think of it this way: When you are happy, the world seems happy, and the sky is open and blue. When you are sad, the world seems sad as well, and the sky is grey and uncaring, leaving you alone to deal with your pain.
Flow with life events, don't resist them, live in harmony and be the change you wish to see in the world.
"Never underestimate your power to change yourself. Never overestimate your power to change others."
- Wayne W. Dyer

9. Awareness and acceptance
Work on understanding life's inevitable duality - accept the negative with the good. Don't harp on people's negativity, don't judge or fight them. Let them be, look and accept. Remember, your world is no more real than a reflection of who you are, deep inside. Don't try to bring everyone into your own world, accept theirs as no less real than yours, and their point of view as no less valid.
The hardest part of acceptance is accepting that, sometimes, some people cannot be changed. Their negativity is something they will defend to the last drop. Not because it gives them pleasure, but because they think it is a natural part of themselves.
Even though it's never too late to try and change that point of view, some never will. It's up to you to either accept their negativity and react accordingly, or take your distance from them. This is especially hard when it is someone we love.
"Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darkness of others."
- Carl Jung

10. Move forward
Dealing with negativity and trying your best to dispel it can be exhausting, and at some point, you have to move on with your life in a positive way. Find a path that allows you to go on with your life without the negativity of others, but also, without the regret that leaving a loved one or friend behind may cause you.
Make your feelings known to them, make them understand they are hard to be around, and slowly decrease your contact. If they want you to stay in their lives, they will be forced to at least pretend to be less negative, and pretending is the first step to actually becoming less negative. The more we act a certain way, the more we believe in it.
