Vitamin K: Sources & Benefits

Vitamins are essential micro-nutrients which the body requires, though in small amounts, for optimal health. These chemicals play crucial roles, for instance, vitamin K is essential for optimal blood clotting process. It also has multiple other benefits. 
Vitamin K is an important factor in bone health and wound healing. Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin that makes proteins for healthy bones and normal blood clotting. According to the doctors, vitamin K helps produce four of the 13 proteins needed for blood clotting.  
  1. Vitamin K is actually a group and has K1, K2, and K3. The functions and benefits accordingly will depend on the actual chemical being referred to.
  2. These are fat soluble vitamins and therefore absorption is better when something fatty is eaten along with it
  3. Vitamin K1 or phyloquilline reaches the liver and is essential for blood clotting. Reduced levels of vitamin K can lead to uncontrolled bleeding, but this is very rare in adults. Newborns can have this problem, and therefore, it is common to give them a one shot of vitamin K injection.
  4. Vitamin K2 is produced by gut bacteria and reaches blood vessel walls and bones. It prevents hardening and calcification of arteries, which is the main cause of heart disease.
  5. It helps in improving calcium and other mineral concentration in the bones and makes the matrix strong. It can be used in osteoporosis to reverse and control bone loss. It can also be used to heal fractured bones.
  6. It slows the growth of cancer cells and can be used to stabilise cancer. It has been shown to improve multiple forms including hepatocellular, prostate, colon, and oral cancers.
  7. It is beneficial in controlling Alzheimer’s disease and improve memory loss in ageing people
  8. It improves insulin action and therefore, prolongs onset of type 2 diabetes
  9. It has been shown to have antioxidant properties (as most other vitamins) and also helps in reducing toxin buildup
  10. It is good for skin health and can help control bruising and  dermatitis.

Vitamin K is found naturally in many foods and the daily dose required for an adult is about 120 to 150 mcg/day. Therefore supplementation is usually not required.
  1. Leafy green vegetables including spinach, okra ( lady finger), cabbage, beans, broccoli and asparagus.
  2. Fermented foods like yoghurt
  3. Soybean in all forms including cooking medium. Japanese diet uses boiled, fermented soybean called natto, which contains a tremendous amount of vitamin K
  4. Nuts, such as cashews, almonds, walnuts, are a good source
  5. Strawberries, grapes, prunes, and apples
  6. Seafood such as salmon and shrimp contain good amount to control heart attack and stroke.
  7. Meat (duck, beef, chicken, and lamb)
Supplements are to be avoided, especially by pregnant and/or nursing mothers and people with a history of stroke, heart disease, heart attack and blood clotting problems.

Compound In Broccoli Slows Cancer Cell Growth

 A compound found in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables has been found to slow the growth of breast cancer cells, especially at early stages.

While sulforaphane has long shown evidence of value in cancer prevention, researchers at Oregon State University (OSU) and the Oregon Health and Science University suggested in a new study that it may play a role in slowing cancer growth as well, Xinhua reported.

The findings were the result of the first clinical studies to look at the effect of sulforaphane on breast tissues of women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Emily Ho, a professor at the OSU College of Public Health and Human Sciences, said: "Our original goal was to determine if sulforaphane supplements would be well tolerated and might alter some of the epigenetic mechanisms involved in cancer."

In a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial, 54 women with abnormal mammograms were given either a placebo or supplements that provided sulforaphane. The amount of sulforaphane they received would equate to about one cup of broccoli sprouts per day, if eaten as a food.

"We were surprised to see a decrease in markers of cell growth, which means these compounds may help slow cancer cell growth," said Ms Ho.

"This is very encouraging. Dietary approaches have traditionally been thought to be limited to cancer prevention, but this demonstrated it could help slow the growth of existing tumours," she said.

Previous studies have found that women with a high intake of cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage or kale, have a decreased risk of breast cancer. In particular, sulforaphane appears to inhibit histone deacetylases, or HDACs, which in turn enhances the expression of tumour suppressor genes that are often silenced in cancer cells.

In the new study published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research, the intake of sulforaphane did reduce HDAC activity, as well as cancer cell growth.

As co-author of the study, Ho said it is possible that sulforaphane may be added to traditional approaches to cancer therapy, whether to prevent cancer, slow its progression, treat it or stop its recurrence.

Researchers said additional studies are needed to evaluate dose responses, work with larger populations, and examine the responses of other relevant molecular targets to either foods or supplements containing sulforaphane.

'Eating less may slow down breast cancer'

Calorie restriction could be a non-toxic way of slowing down spread of breast cancer, a study said.

The triple negative subtype of breast cancer - one of the most aggressive forms - is less likely to spread, or metastasise, to new sites in the body when mice were fed a restricted diet.

"Calorie restriction promotes epigenetic changes in the breast tissue that keep the extracellular matrix strong," said Nicole Simone, an associate professor at Thomas Jefferson University in the US.

"A strong matrix creates a sort of cage around the tumour, making it more difficult for cancer cells to escape and spread to new sites in the body," Simone noted.

When mouse models of triple negative cancer were fed 30 percent less than what they ate when given free access to food, the cancer cells decreased their production of microRNAs 17 and 20 (miR 17/20).

This group of miRs is often increased in triple negative cancers that metastasis.

Breast cancer patients are often treated with hormonal therapy to block tumour growth, and steroids to counteract the side effects of chemotherapy.

However, both treatments can cause a patient to have altered metabolism which can lead to weight gain.

Recent studies have shown that too much weight makes standard treatments for breast cancer less effective, and those who gain weight during treatment have worse cancer outcomes.

"That is why it is important to look at metabolism when treating women with cancer," Simone added.

If calorie restriction is as effective in women as it is in animal models, then it would likely change the expression patterns of a large set of genes, hitting multiple targets at once without toxicity.

The study appeared in the journal Breast Cancer Research and Treatment.

New drug for inherited cancer identified

 Scientists have identified a new drug that can potentially treat an inherited form of cancer that has no cure.
 The new study showed the drug candidate - known as FRAX97 - slowed the proliferation and progression of tumour cells in animal models of Neurofibromatosis type 2.
This inherited type of cancer, caused by mutations in the anti-tumour gene NF2, leads to tumours of the auditory nerve that connects the inner ear to the brain.
 The new compound, originally developed to treat neuro-degenerative disease, targets a protein family known as p21-activated kinases or PAKs.
 These kinases (enzymes that add a phosphate group to other proteins and change their function) play a critical role in the development of Neurofibromatosis type 2. PAK1 has also been implicated in the growth of breast and lung cancers.
 "Our study shows that if we inhibit these kinases we can counter the formation of tumours in this brain disease," said an  associate professor who led the study.
 In the new study, researchers showed that the inhibitor slows down progression of Neurofibromatosis type 2 in animal models and reduces more than 80 per cent of PAK1 activity.
They noted a key challenge in developing drug candidates is finding potential agents that are both potent and highly selective for their targets - limiting its action to the desired arena and reducing unwanted side effects.
 "This inhibitor turned out to be both potent and highly selective," he said.
 "The real question is why. We were able to show that it works through a unique mechanism," he said.
 While the binding site on PAK1 is quite large, it also contains a smaller pocket, a kind of back-room that juts off the larger site.
 The inhibitor not only takes up space in the larger site, but enters the back pocket as well. That extra binding gives the inhibitor its strong selectivity.
