Meditation Techniques and Neurological Effects

Perhaps your life has become too tough to handle. You may be feeling run-down, stressed and anxious and cannot wait to find some time to wind down and relax. Your mind could be preoccupied, thinking about financial worries, deadlines, work, kids and health issues. Consequently, you have found it impossible to switch off.

One of the solutions you may have come across is meditation, the benefits of which include reduced stress levels and better sleep. However, the benefits do not just end there. Tuning inwards can actually make lasting physical changes, and not just in the way you feel. Meditation can literally change your brain. Let's take a look:
meditation
An overview:
The brain on meditation The brain is divided into various segments, each having its own role. The frontal lobe (located at the front end of the brain), helps us plan, reason, emote and be aware of ourselves. MRI scans have shown that during meditation, the frontal lobe slows down and tunes off.

Meditation can also have an impact on the thalamus. This area of the brain coordinates our senses and channels them from different parts of the body to the brain. During meditation, this processing slows down.

The reticular formation is also affected during meditation. It is responsible for keeping the brain alert, based on the stimuli it receives.

7 ways meditation affects the brain

1. Meditation promotes new connections in the brain
Meditation stimulates the growth of new brain cells, promoting more gray matter (the part of the brain whereby neurons connect to one another and which is activated in the process of learning new skills). As we age, we naturally begin to lose some of the mass of the grey matter. However, meditation can help slow this process down.

2. Meditation improves your memory
Due to the effects that meditation has on gray matter, it has also been found to affect the hippocampus, the area of the brain that focuses on memory, helping us learn and internalize new skills and information. Furthermore, research conducted by Osher Research Center and Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, illustrated that people practicing mindful meditation have the ability to adjust their brain waves, tuning out distractions. Consequently, this increases productivity and boosts memory.

3. Meditation helps control emotions
Meditation affects the pre-frontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for regulating emotions, by increasing the amount of gray matter in this area. As a result, meditation enables us to deal better with our emotions and feelings.

4. Meditation diminishes stress
Meditation affects the amygdala center - most commonly associated with fear and stress. When we feel stressed, this part of the brain becomes activated, triggering the fight or flight response. Meditation can reduce the activity of the amygdala, enabling us to control our anxiety and stress levels that come about for no apparent reason. Furthermore, a study conducted to discover the benefits of meditation in 2012, analyzed three groups to test which of the three can handle stress better. The first group practiced mindful meditation; the second focused on body relaxation training and the third were given no training whatsoever. A multi-tasking, stress-inducing test portrayed that those who meditated showed less stress than the group that didn't.

5. Meditation promotes a relaxed state of mind
In its aroused state, your brain releases alpha waves, keeping you alert and hyped up. However, MRI scans have shown that during meditation, your brain predominantly releases theta waves - associated with a relaxed state of mind.

6. Meditation reduces anxiety
In an upsetting situation, the prefrontal cortex causes you to feel anxious. This response can be controlled with regular meditation. Meditating enables a lesser reaction in the prefrontal cortex, reducing pangs of anxiety, enabling you to evaluate the situation in a rational way.

7. Meditation increases resilience
Researchers at Wisconsin Madison University analyzed MRI images of Tibetan monks and discovered that meditation and resilience have a deep-rooted connection.

Picking the right meditation for you
Meditation can be practiced in a variety of ways. Methods vary in the same way that people vary in their attitudes, character, and nature. Therefore, picking the right method of meditation for you comes down to fitting the right method of meditation to your nature, as opposed to trying to fit your character to a certain technique. Doing so will only cause you to feel frustrated after some time. However, when you find the right meditation for you, you will feel a certain ease and comfort in your practice, and you will flourish.

4 ways beginners can meditate

1. Breathing: Following the breath is a great way to start your meditation practice, before moving on to more in-depth meditations. Focusing on the breath brings about a restful and calm nature. Here are three breathing techniques you could try.

2. Gazing: This method of meditation uses our sense of sight to silence the mind. You can practice it anywhere, focusing your mind on something specific. In the yoga tradition, trataka is often practiced. This form of meditation focuses on gazing at a still candle flame in the dark. Practicing this method of meditation enables your mind to become focused.

3. Visualization: In this meditation, your eyes are closed. It requires the use of your inner eyes or your mind's eye. While there are many forms of visualization meditation, it often focuses on connecting with and visualizing an object, such as your heart - serving as an object of meditation. Alternatively, you may also visualize a calm space, such as a beach, creating your surroundings in your mind's eye.

4. Chanting mantras: Mantras are believed to be a powerful sound or vibration that can be used to enter a deep state of meditation. Repeating mantras can help the mind become calm and more focused.

Sage: The Herb With Bountiful Health Benefits

Sage, commonly known as garden sage and scientifically referred to as Salvia officinalis, is a popular herb with many culinary uses. It belongs to the mint family, which includes herbs such as oregano, rosemary, basil, and thyme.

Sage has a strong aroma and a distinctive earthy flavor. Its potent scent and taste make it an excellent choice for seasoning and garnishing dishes that require a zesty kick. Despite being used in small amounts, sage contains various essential minerals and nutrients that offer several health benefits.

1. Packed with several nutrients

Sage: The Herb With Bountiful Health Benefits
Sage is packed with an abundance of vital nutrients, such as vitamins A, E, B1, B6, C, and K, along with a variety of minerals like calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, zinc, niacin, thiamine, and folate. Moreover, it boasts a plethora of antioxidants, flavonoids, and active compounds such as cineole, borneol, and thujone, that are essential for making sage oil—a potent remedy for various ailments, particularly neural issues. This aromatic herb also contains caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, rosmarinic acid, ellagic acid, and rutin, all of which contribute to its numerous health benefits.

2. Great for your oral health
In 2015, researchers confirmed the effectiveness of sage-based mouthwash in eliminating Streptococcus mutans bacteria, which are notorious for their role in tooth cavities. Similarly, a 2021 study looked into the use of sage-based mouthwash in late-stage cancer patients and found a significant reduction in dental plaque among those who used sage. Interestingly, the group that used regular saline mouthwash also saw a decrease in plaque. Furthermore, a test-tube research found that sage extract successfully removed oral germs while inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans, a fungus associated with cavities.

3. Improves memory and brain health
Sage has long been regarded as a time-tested remedy for improving brain function. Its high antioxidant content has been related to improved memory, attention, concentration, calmness, and alertness. Several studies have shown the beneficial effects of regular sage consumption on memory, thinking, problem-solving, and overall cognitive ability. It is therefore considered a powerful cognitive enhancer with significant benefits when treating diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and other psychoses.

4. Lowers " bad" LDL cholesterol
Elevated levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol raise the risk of heart disease, which affects more than 40% of people worldwide. High blood cholesterol increases the risk of heart disease, the leading cause of death, and stroke, the fifth leading cause of death. Sage has been shown to be effective in lowering "bad" LDL cholesterol levels, which build up in artery walls and could cause cardiovascular disease in the future. Research has also found that drinking sage tea twice a day reduced "bad" LDL cholesterol and total blood cholesterol levels while increasing "good" HDL cholesterol levels in just two weeks. Several other human studies confirmed similar findings, highlighting the potential benefits of sage extract.

5. Manage diabetes
Common sage leaves have been traditionally used as a remedy for managing diabetes. Evidence from human and animal research shows that sage's active components are particularly beneficial in diabetes treatment since they reduce sugar release into the system while also increasing insulin levels. Furthermore, it effectively converts carbohydrates into energy while alleviating symptoms like frequent urination and thirst. Studies have shown that drinking sage leaf infusion regularly reduces blood sugar levels.

6. It’s great for sore throats
The European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy (ESCOP) suggests sage leaf as a remedy for reducing inflammation and treating infections in the mouth and throat. Sage has other oral health benefits, such as helping control gingivitis, sore throats, and gastritis. In clinical trials, sage throat spray was found to greatly reduce the discomfort of acute sore throats.

How to add Sage to your diet
Sage can be found in a variety of forms and is versatile in the kitchen. Fresh sage leaves have a strong, fragrant flavor and are most effective when used in moderation in culinary preparations. Here are a few ways to include fresh sage in your culinary routine:

Use it as a garnish for soups.

Mix chopped sage leaves into the stuffing for roast dishes.

Enhance the flavor of tomato sauce by adding chopped sage leaves during cooking.

Boost the taste of roast dishes by mixing finely chopped sage leaves into the stuffing mixture.

Experiment with sage in breakfast dishes by adding chopped leaves to omelets or scrambled eggs.

Combine finely chopped sage leaves with softened butter to create savory sage butter. Spread it on bread, melt it over vegetables, or use it to baste meats for an infusion of rich, herby flavor.

10 Proven Health Benefits of Blueberries

Blueberries are sweet, nutritious and wildly popular.

Often labeled a superfood, they are low in calories and incredibly good for you.

They’re so tasty and convenient that many people consider them their favorite fruit.

Here are 10 proven health benefits of blueberries.

blueberry, blueberries, antioxidants, blueberry benefits, cholesterol

1. Blueberries Are Low in Calories But High in Nutrients

The blueberry bush (Vaccinium sect. Cyanococcus) is a flowering shrub that produces berries with a bluish, purple hue — also known as blueberries.

It is closely related to similar shrubs, such as those that produce cranberries and huckleberries.

Blueberries are small — around 0.2–0.6 inches (5–16 millimeters) in diameter — and feature a flared crown at the end.

They are green in color when they first appear, then deepen to purple and blue as they ripen.

The two most common types are:

  • Highbush blueberries: The most common cultivated variety in the US.
  • Lowbush or “wild” blueberries: Typically smaller and richer in some antioxidants.

Blueberries are among the most nutrient dense berries. A 1-cup (148-gram) serving of blueberries contains:

  • Fiber: 4 grams
  • Vitamin C: 24% of the RDI
  • Vitamin K: 36% of the RDI
  • Manganese: 25% of the RDI
  • Small amounts of various other nutrients

They are also about 85% water, and an entire cup contains only 84 calories, with 15 grams of  carbohydrates.

Calorie for calorie, this makes them an excellent source of several important nutrients.

Antioxidants protect your body from free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage your cells and contribute to aging and diseases, such as cancer .

Blueberries are believed to have one of the highest antioxidant levels of all common fruits and vegetables .

The main antioxidant compounds in blueberries belong to a family of polyphenols antioxidants called flavonoids.

One group of flavonoids in particular — anthocyanins — is thought to be responsible for much of these berries’ beneficial health effects

Blueberries have been shown to directly increase antioxidant levels in your body (

Oxidative DNA damage is an unavoidable part of everyday life. It is said to occur tens of thousands of times per day in every cell in your body .

DNA damage is part of the reason we grow older. It also plays an important role in the development of diseases like cancer .

Because blueberries are high in antioxidants, they can neutralize some of the free radicals that damage your DNA.

In one study, 168 people drank 34 ounces (1 liter) of a mixed blueberry and  apple juice daily. After four weeks, oxidative DNA damage due to free radicals was reduced by 20% .

These findings agree with smaller studies that use either fresh or powdered blueberries.

Oxidative damage is not limited to your cells and DNA.

It is also problematic when your “bad” LDL cholesterol is oxidized.

In fact, oxidation of “bad” LDL cholesterol is a crucial step in the heart disease process.

The antioxidants in blueberries are strongly linked to reduced levels of oxidized LDL. This makes blueberries very good for your heart.

A daily 2-ounce (50-gram) serving of blueberries lowered LDL oxidation by 27% over eight weeks in obese people who were obese.

Another study determined that eating 2.5 ounces (75 grams) of blueberries with a main meal significantly reduced the oxidation of “bad” LDL cholesterol.

Blueberries appear to have significant benefits for people with high blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for heart disease.

In an eight-week study, obese people who had had a high risk of heart disease noted a 4–6% reduction in blood pressure after consuming 2 ounces (50 grams) of blueberries per day.

Other studies have observed similar effects — especially for postmenopausal women.

While eating blueberries may lower blood pressure and oxidized LDL cholesterol, it’s important to keep in mind that these are risk factors — not actual diseases.

It would be much more informative to know whether blueberries help prevent hard endpoints like heart attacks, which are the world’s leading cause of death .

A study in 93,600 nurses found that those with the highest intake of anthocyanins — the main antioxidants in blueberries — were at a 32% lower risk of heart attacks compared to those with the lowest intake.

Because this was an observational study, it cannot prove that the anthocyanins alone caused the reduction in risk.

More studies are needed before any claims can be made.

Oxidative stress can accelerate your brain’s aging process, negatively affecting brain function.

According to animal studies, the antioxidants in blueberries may affect areas of your brain that are essential for intelligence .

They appear to benefit aging neurons, leading to improvements in cell signaling.

Human studies have also yielded promising results.

In one of these studies, nine older adults with mild cognitive impairment consumed blueberry juice every day. After 12 weeks, they experienced improvements in several markers of brain function.

A six-year study in over 16,000 older individuals found that blueberries and strawberries were linked to delays in mental aging by up to 2.5 years

Blueberries provide moderate amounts of sugar compared to other fruits.

One cup (148 grams) holds 15 grams of sugar, which is equivalent to a small apple or large orange.

However, the bioactive compounds in blueberries appear to outweigh any negative impact of the sugar when it comes to blood sugar control.

Research suggests that anthocyanins in blueberries have beneficial effects on insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism. These anti-diabetes effects occur with both blueberry juice and extract.

In a study in 32 obese people with insulin resistance,  two blueberry smoothies daily caused major improvements in insulin sensitivity.

Improved insulin sensitivity should lower the risk of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, which are currently two of the world’s biggest health problems.

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are a common problem for women.

It is widely known that cranberry juice can help prevent these types of infections.

Because blueberries are closely related to cranberries, they boast many of the same active substances as cranberry juice .

These substances are called anti-adhesives and help prevent bacteria like E. coli from binding to the wall of your bladder.

Blueberries have rarely been studied for their impact on UTIs, but they likely have similar effects as cranberries.

Strenuous exercise can lead to muscle soreness and fatigue.

This is driven partly by local inflammation and oxidative stress in your muscle tissue.

Blueberry supplements may lessen the damage that occurs at a molecular level, minimizing soreness and reduced muscle performance.

In a small study in 10 female athletes, blueberries accelerated muscle recovery after strenuous leg exercises.
