Blood vessels may turn into bone-like particles with age

Researchers have discovered that blood vessels within bone marrow may progressively turn into bones with advancing age.

The study suggested that ossified particles may contribute to  diseases such as vascular calcification, heart attack, stroke and inadequate blood supply to the limbs.


By examining seemingly unrelated images and linking the details of them together, the author was able to posit the presence of bone-like particles in the blood, she said.


In fact, some of the ossified particles are large enough to clog the smallest blood vessels in the vascular tree, she added.


Approximately 610,000 people die each year from a heart disease-related event, making it the leading cause of death for both men n women in the U.S.


Vascular calcification is a common characteristic and risk factor for morbidity and mortality, she said. These bone-like particles are potentially more dangerous because of their sharp edges.


Some of the ossified particles have sharp tips and edges that could damage the lining of blood vessels, she said. This damage could initiate events leading to atherosclerosis ( build-up of plaque), which can restrict blood flow over time.


The discovery of these bone-like particles could help physicians detect and treat potentially life-threatening conditions.

Magnesium levels have effect on Vitamin D

Magnesium levels may have an effect in metabolising Vitamin D, says a recent study.

Researchers found that Vitamin D can’t be metabolised without sufficient magnesium levels.

“People are taking Vitamin D supplements but don’t realise how it gets metabolised. Without magnesium, Vitamin D is not really useful or safe,” said a researcher.

Researchers have explained that the consumption of Vitamin D supplements can increase a person’s calcium and phosphate levels even if they remain Vitamin D deficient. People may suffer from vascular calcification if their magnesium levels aren’t high enough to prevent the complication.

Patients with the right amount of magnesium levels require less Vitamin D supplementation to achieve sufficient Vitamin D levels. Magnesium also reduces osteoporosis, which helps to mitigate the risk of bone fracture that can be attributed to low levels of Vitamin D.

Deficiency in either of these nutrients is reported to be associated with various disorders, including skeletal deformities, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic syndrome.

While the recommended daily allowance for magnesium is 420 mg for males and 320 mg for females, the standard diet in the United States contains only about 50 per cent of that amount. Almost half of the total population is estimated to be consuming a magnesium-deficient diet.

Researchers have stated that the magnesium consumption from natural foods has decreased in the past few decades, owing to industrialised agriculture and changes in dietary habits. Magnesium status is low in populations who consume processed foods that are high in refined grains, fat, phosphate, and sugar.

“By consuming an optimal amount of magnesium, one may be able to lower the risks of Vitamin D deficiency, and reduce the dependency on Vitamin D supplements,” he noted. Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the human body after calcium, potassium, and sodium.

Factors that affect Your Magnesium Levels
Magnesium is found in seaweed and green leafy vegetables like spinach and Swiss chard in high levels, and other rich sources of the mineral include avocados, beans, nuts, and seeds, like pumpkin, sunflower, and sesame seeds. Yet, most foods lack it along with other minerals, as, according to Dr. :
“Magnesium is farmed out of the soil much more than calcium… A hundred years ago, we would get maybe 500 milligrams of magnesium in an ordinary diet. Now we’re lucky to get 200 milligrams.”

New blood test detects deadly calcium deposits


A new test could identify individuals who are likely to develop 
potentially deadly calcium deposits in their tissues and blood vessels, a precursor to chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Heart disease is the number one killer of patients with CKD and vascular calcification is thought to play a major role in it. Such patients often have abnormally high blood calcium levels due to their compromised kidney function and the effects of commonly used medications.

Currently, physicians have no tools to determine an individual’s calcification risk, the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology reports.

Researchers who developed the pioneering new assay, have found that both the blood of mice deficient in a protein that inhibits calcification and the blood of CKD patients on dialysis had a reduced ability to inhibit calcification. Blood from healthy volunteers did not.

 This test may identify patients at risk for the development of calcification, may become an important tool for identifying and testing calcification inhibitors, and may provide the basis for treatment monitoring in patients who receive such inhibitors.
